Recruiting on the High Plains :: 2010 Signing Day

Signing Day Arrives . . . Finally

The past few years, today seemed more like a marathon, but this year, with everything else that's happened, it's felt more like a sprint.  And considering that all I do is sit at a computer and type, I can't imagine what this staff has had to endure to keep as many players on the same page.  My last count, head coach Tommy Tuberville was unable to retain 5 commits:  RB Aaron Spikes; OL Denton Simek; DE Kedrick Dial; LB Fred Harvey; and OL Javious Townsend.  Tuberville had about 24 to 25 commits when he was hired at Texas Tech and he was able to retain (crossing fingers) the other 20 players.  That's not too bad, about an 80% retention rate, which I can live with.  There's also the thought that with some of these players, Tuberville may have stopped recruiting some of these players and with the others, they may have changed on their own.   That's a natural part of the process, especially when the head coach is making fairly significant changes on defense.

Breaking News

Just a reminder to everyone not to post any premium information.  I'll be busy for most of the day, but I'll be checking in and I'm just asking that we just not post premium material.  The news is going to be pretty fast and furious today and if anyone breaks any news, I'd really appreciate it if you could always provide a link to where you're getting the information.  Here's a few resources you might use:

Texas Tech official site -- 2010 Signing Day Central which also includes a link to a press conference that is supposed to start at 3:00 p.m and it sounds like it's going to be fee to watch.
Twitter search for Texas Tech -- Don't laugh, you'd be amazed how much news is broken by folks by Twitter, but I'd just warn you that you may want to link to actual traditional media folks rather than Bill in Muleshoe (no offense Bill).
LAJ's Don Williams - Raider Rants blog - Williams hasn't updated his blog since before Tuberville was hired.
LAJ's Adam Zuvanich - Zuvie's Views blog - Zuvie updates his blog relatively frequently.
Channel 11's Sportstacular Pete Christy's Twitter - Not afraid to post what ever information he is hearing.
RRS.com's Chris Level's Twitter - although he hasn't posted much information in quite some time.

Feel free to post any other links or websites in the comments, but this should be a start.

[Note by Seth C, 02/03/10 6:38 AM CST ]  I wanted to link to the SB Nation National Signing Day story stream, which will have all of your nationwide stories.

In the News

More on Warren and Whigham:  LAJ's Don Williams has some up quotes from relatively recent commits, Florida DB Phillip Warren and DB Lavaughn Whigham, and what they bring to the table (they both attend Miami's Southridge HS).  Here's their high school coach on Warren:

“Phillip Warren is a great man-to-man cover corner,’’ Burrows said. “He was a workout warrior for us — the strongest kid, pound for pound on the team, and one of the fastest kids as well. He was a great man-press cornerback that was very good in run support as well. We did a lot of things with him.’’

And on Whigham:

“I think he’s going to have great success,’’ Burrows said. “He has long arms and a good vertical leap. (At cornerback), he was basically a rangy wide receiver that can tackle. A lot of opponents knew that if they did throw the ball to him, he was going to pick it off — not just break it up, but pick it off.’’

Radley is Connected:  An interesting piece from ESPN's Ramona Shelburne, who is writing an article about UCLA commit Malcolm Jones, but ends up talking with one of the "on the fence" guys, RB Lucky Radley, who is apparently very connected to a number of the California players:

One of the most well-connected and socially active football players in Southern California is running back Lucky Radley (Woodland Hills, Calif./Taft), who is set to announce his decision at a news conference at the school at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

"Everyone recruits each other," Radley said. "It's much bigger than people realize.

"We all call each other, text each other, post on Facebook. Things like, 'Come on, come be a Bruin with me' or 'Fight on, Let's go Trojans.' When you're unannounced like me, you get a lot more people calling you. It's been nuts. You should see my Facebook page."

Because he is still unannounced -- he's deciding between Michigan, North Carolina, Utah and Texas Tech -- Radley's been on the receiving end of a lot of these phone calls and recruiting pitches.

But because he's probably one of the most savvy teenagers I've ever talked to -- seriously, the kid's going to be an agent someday -- he also has been a fact finder.

Frankly, Radley probably knows more about where the big-name recruits in Southern California are going to commit Wednesday than most of the professional recruiting analysts.

Coaching Change Messes:  The Chron's Sam Kahn, Jr. writes about how the coaching change at Texas Tech initially caused some issues for commits OL James Polk and DE Dartwan Bush, both Houston area players:

When Bush learned of Leach's fate at Tech, he, like Polk, was shocked. Unlike Polk, he committed to the Raiders late in the process — doing so after taking an official visit in late December. But the coach who recruited him, Tech offensive line coach Matt Moore, was retained and contacted Bush in the immediate aftermath to inform him of the situation.

Soon thereafter, Bush got in contact with new coach Tommy Tuberville and new defensive coordinator James Willis to talk things over and decided Lubbock still would be his destination.

FoxSports with Randy Rogers:  FoxSports Southwest's Brian Smith did a Q&A with recruiting guru Randy Rogers who comments about a bunch of players, but he had this to say about Texas Tech commit QB Scotty Young:

Talk about quarterback Scotty Young (Denton, TX/Ryan) a little. Is he a good fit for Texas Tech’s offensive system?

Well, I thought he was a great fit for what I’ll call the “Pirate” offense. I thought he was the perfect guy for Mike Leach. Obviously, I don’t think you’re going to see Tommy Tuberville throw the ball all over the park like Mike Leach did. That’s not been his history.

But having said that, I still think Scotty Young is the best quarterback prospect coming, particularly if you want to spread, because he can make all the throws. He’s got good size, and he doesn’t take a lot of hits. He’ll throw the ball away and go back to the huddle. For as many balls as he’s thrown, his body hasn’t taken a lot of hits, and for the number of touchdowns he’s thrown, he’s got great touch deep. He’s got terrific anticipation of receivers moving. I just think he’s really good.

On the Fence

There are handful of players that are on the fence about whether or not they'll be choosing Texas Tech today.  There's probably a lot more than this, but this list is what I've gathered over the past week or so and actually located quite a bit of their information over the weekend.  I'm not sure what my expectations are in regards to any of these players

Hey Seth, just to add to the drama,

We aren’t held captive by a bunch of narcissistic 18 year olds….a few of my white blood cells die every time I see a kid with 3 hats in front of him and he dramatically puts one on.

Boone will regret.....

Unless you are from LA why would a top Wide receiver go to lsu? They run the football, and living in MS I have been hearing since the bowl game that unless Miles gets to the sec champ game then there will probably be a new coach in Baton Rouge. I hope Boone really likes purple and gold cause in a year or so that is all he could be left with. TTech will be fine @ wide receiver, I hope we get the 4 star that was @ Hargrave!!!!! Wreck’Em Tech

Bourbon for sure.

I have a funny story about Bourbon Street last year with my boss. And a story that ties into that one from a month before.

Why because we didn’t get Boone? I’m actually kinda glad we didn’t get him, seemed like he had a terrible attitude and would cause problems in the locker room.

Scotty Young is shown as signed on scout.com

According to scout.com (not rivals.com), of our 23 potential commitments 20 have signed.

If all 23 sign, then our recruiting score will be 2.78.

Our worst possible recruiting score at this stage would be 2.71.

Whatever happens now, this class will be ranked number of six among the past 9 recruiting class (per scout.com scoring method), and below our previous 8 year average of 2.83.

Congratulations to all the new Red Raiders – best of luck

Given Tubs problems with recruiting at Auburn,

it’s not surprising he did not improve our recruiting stats, much less make us competitive with OU and Texas. Guess this comes down to coaching. Still expecting to wreck the big guys!

Tubbs had a tough enough task to keep the class entact

We shouldn’t judge him based on the outcome of this recruiting class. I think he did a good job considering the obvious challenge.

I’m not willing to say more than that at this stage, but nothing to say less either.

If he tries to ‘sell’ me on his performance, then we might have some issues. . .

RRS has a DE from La. listed under commited but not signed. If you look at his individual page, it shows he committed today. No stars, offered by SMU. Who knows.

Said they decided not to take another RB this year, and to hold the scholarships to take two next year. Appearently next year’s crop is suppose to be one of the best ever including………..Barry Sanders Jr………….who we have already offered.

This probably means no Lucky Radley

Heard the same on radio in Austin this morning

They were discussing UT deciding NOT to pursue Seastrunk from Temple. Apparently there are at least 4 RB’s rated 4 or 5 star recruits in state including the kid from Abilene High.

So I don’t necessarily understand not pursuing someone like Radley, but there will be plenty to choose from in next years class.

I agree with you about defensive speed, however I just saw that we lost Fergusen(another goes to LSU). Basically I just wish we had picked up some more highly sought after recruits. It's open for a couple months

Just like Prior did to Ohio State a couple years ago. But, as a practical matter, since classes fill up as of today most kids can’t take the chance of waiting very long before committing. Their offer will be rescinded otherwise.

Depends on you I guess

Because Baylor is ranked way below us, as our half of the big XII in scouts.com ranking. So, it really depends on how much you want to value these rankings or waste your time over them. Also, on the rivals ranking, can you explain why BYU (2.78) and Mississippi State (2.77) are ranked above us (2.84)? So, I would say that you relax. We have a solid recruiting class and will be fine.

by jef on Feb 3, 2010 1:04 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Stars mean nothing and this isn’t the first time in recent history that Baylor’s finished ahead of us. Also, A&M routinely finishes in the top 15 in the nation in recruiting. How’s that worked out for them?

Updated tally based on current scout.com (not rivals.com) data

Our overall score dropped to 2.64 based on current 22 commits.
(2 4-stars, 11 3-stars, 8 2-stars, 1 1-star)

If Brandon Smith (3-star) and Rumph (4-star) sign our score goes to 2.71.

Our averge score is 2.83 over the past 9 years. A 2.64 would make this class 8th out of the past 9 classes – not too great. 2.71 bumps that number to number six out of nine classes.

What brought the score down was unexpectedly signing the Cayou kid who scout.com has listed as a 1 star.

That guy in your avatar wasn’t rated so highly by scout or rivals and yet he led the NFL in receptions this year. Stop whining and realize that these recruiting services are just paper. Paper doesn’t win championships the players do.

Look at how many top 25 classes A&M has had and done nothing with. UT had the top class in the country several years in the 2000’s and only have one national championship come out of it. Baylor is still Baylor and their players will still have to qualify to play.

by ST04 on Feb 3, 2010 1:09 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

That guy in my avatar spent most of this season on the IR and I doubt a Patriots RB is ever going to lead the NFL in receptions………that’s Sammy Morris.

I said it “migh not mean much” that we were outrecruited by Baylor. But it did add that “it can’t be good.” Is it? Maybe it’s meaningless or a good thing to you, but if I would have told you this was going to happen 6 months ago you would have thought I was crazy.

Not whining, I’m just not as fired up with the bottom line in terms of recruiting as you and yeah, it kinds bums me out. So what.

Lots of good WR & RB’s are going to be seniors in the State of Texas next year too. That is why I’m not worried about Boone. Corker is a good WR and we can stock up next year just like we did 2 years ago. I like the defensive players we got this year and expect alot of them to be way underrated.

by TheScarletandTheBlack on Feb 3, 2010 1:18 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

While we're on that topic...

Why is it that high profile receivers are choosing LSU and Bama (Julio Jones) over Tech when Tech gives them offers?

You choose NC’s and large stadiums over a chance to truely show your skill set and a much higher draft position. Just doesn’t seem like a smart career move to me.

by TheScarletandTheBlack on Feb 3, 2010 1:24 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Jones is from Alabama, but other than that I don’t know why he went there. He will help his draft stock because he showcases his ability to block on the outside in the running game. All NFL receivers should be able to do this and Hienz Ward(sp?) is the best at it. Boone probably just liked the draw of LSU’s stadium and fan base. I don’t get it either since they only averaged 155yards passing per game last year, and don’t seem to have a QB that knows how to throw anything but a 5 yard out.

There is no certainty about what kind of offense we are going to run or how we are going to run it. Tub’s last go around with a spread offense wasn’t pretty.

I still don’t see how this class sucks. It’s par for the course for Tech. And considering we had a late major coaching change, like, replacing everyone, I would have to consider the class just fine. The gem of the crop didn’t waver (S. Young). This is a QB offense, not a WR offense. We’ve had garbage receivers in years past and still had crazy numbers.

I could care less what Baylor got on their grade…or UT or OU or aTm. They are irrelevant to me at this point. Besides, there’s always next year. Always.

Quick question, what were the rankings of Tech’s last four or five classes. Not in the Big XII, but overall. Using Scouts or Rivals is fine. I’m just curious.

I have a feeling a ranking in the 30s is fairly normal. I have another feeling that other schools in the Big XII are stepping up their game a bit. So is all this just proportional to what we normally do, even if we still had the Messiah?

by Tech92 on Feb 3, 2010 1:39 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

No matter what you wish to be called you’re still not gonna convince me that Leach’s offense, without a great D, would have ever won a champioship.

I’ve been a huge Leach supporter since day 1 (I still am and I hope he gets every cent TTU owes to him) and agree that his offense was one of a kind. However, I also know that offense alone will not win a damn thing. All anyone had to do to beat us was shut down or at least contain our one-sided offense then post 28 points on our usually sub-par D and, bam, we lost.

2006 – 25 – this 25th ranking is based on total points and that year Tech signed 34 recruits. If you go back to that list only a couple were 4 recruits with 4 stars (including Crabtree), 4 recruits rated 5.7 (high 3) and there were 8 recruits with 2 star recruits that year.

In summary 2006 ranking really had little meaning to us. I think a key thing to watch is the # of 4 star recruits each year, as well as the # of 5.7 3s, and the # of 2 stars (meaning looking at the bottom of the class for quality).
                   4 Star 5.7 3 Star 2 star
2010 – 5 4 5 (counting Cayou and Warren as 2s)
2009 – 5 5 5
2008 – 3 2 3 (very small class)
2007 – 1 3 8
2006 – 4 4 8

This shows me that 2009 and 2010 reflect better ratings at the bottom of our class.
The 5 recruits this year below 3 stars were all brought in late in the game by Tuberville’s group. As of Leach’s firing, we did not have any players on rivals below 3 stars.
Let’s hope these 5 that the new coaches picked up late in the game are all diamonds in the rough.

I have the issue of Texas Football when he was signed. You would all be surprised.

I agree, I think they did that to cover their asses.

Let’s see…

A&M always does better at recruiting than Tech.

Keep your chin up, is all I’m saying. I don’t discount how you feel about all this mess (Leach v. Tech), and I agree things could be better. But we could have ended up with Lane Kiffin. So things could be worse, too.

A tough row to hoe means that things are hard…in for a challenge…it’s an old farming expression. If there’s a lot of weeds in a row, it’s tough to hoe (when it was done by hand).
