Here's why our class was not better....
The obvious reasons aside.....timing was poor. As a coach who came in without a job, we didn't reap the benefits of any signees following Tuberville from his previous job- Like Lane Kiffin had some of his Tennessee class follow him to USC. And, some of the assistants came from smaller schools, like Troy or from really bigger quatlity schools, like Alabama. I'm not saying I am unhappy with the class, I just know some of the reasons it wasn't better. Not any of the guys who were hired's fault.....I'd feel great about this class if Myers and Hance were fired! What do you think

I can't
begin to tell you how great I would feel about the Red Raiders if Myers and Hance were no longer associated with Texas Tech University.
I'm dealing with it.
I have followed the Red Raiders since my freshman year of 1970, never to see Tech win a football championship out right. Always hoping, always cheering, always longing for the Red Raiders to get over the hump and win the conference championship. I think Leach was building that conference championship team and 2010 was shaping up to be the year. And I do think the Red Raiders will field one of their best teams this year.
My crystal ball is often cloudy, but I see the Red Raiders being nothing but mediocre again. You know, that’s just the way it is and I blame the administration. Always will.
Class is a Bust Because
I really was putting a lot on Boone. I watched a lot of film on him, and I know he has not played one down in college football, but he looked really strong. I am not a big Scotty Young fan. I don’t think he has the arm strength for the Big 12. But I do not do this for a lving. I am just more concerned that Tubs is going to try and make this a defensive team, and our offense is going after clock management. Leach understood that for Tech to recruit and win, they have to score 50 points a game. Just look at the Big 12 schools who have all the talented 5 and 4 star recruits. Heck, go look at all Oklahoma, Texas, and Texas A&M kids, none of these kids were even recruited by Tech. Leach knows we can’t get them, so he build a pipeline that was 10 years in the making. Looks like a C+ class on defensive side, and that means we are going to at best be top four in Big 12 defense. We have to score points. I make about three to four games a year, I live out of town. I will still support Tech. Go Raiders.
You don’t do this for a living and yet you can judge this class as C+? And you have all the doom and gloom predictions for Tech, inspite of the fact that this is how an average Leach class has looked like in the past ten years, and in each of those years we have performed exceedingly well. You are making no sense.
by jef on Feb 3, 2010 2:56 PM CST up reply actions
I think it makes sense.
With Leach here it would be just the same old class recruit score but that was okay because of the system Leach was able to implement.
Without Leach at the helm, I believe, Btech feels that we won’t be able to out smart the higher caliber schools.
Just my opinion. It’s worth what it’s worth.

Oldschool has a point
A full season or two may be a little much for opinions.
Maybe full assessment would be a better way to describe it? In other words, give them a season or two before making a full assessment on how they will do over the long term??
I think the best years are ahead, but I’m gonna have opinions. No doubt about it.

agreed
I’m fully capable of giving Tubs a pass for a couple of years as long as Tech doesn’t have a real meltdown in performance.
After all, he has to get his system kinks worked out and his classmen in the fold, but I do have doubts and fears about the direction we’re headed.
I guess it’s just that I’m not fully convinced that this direction is going to lead to success.

I think it's far from a bust
We landed some great talent defensively. Boone wasn’t going to make or break Tech. He was a great recruit but he’s one of many receivers. We aren’t in bad shape at all at that position. His speed isn’t the best either. For me Scotty Young and Corker will be great offensively and along with Delans Griffin make for a nice offensive class where we needed additions. We are in pretty good shape offensively already and we can pick up better recruits next year without all the drama. Our defense in this class is outstanding. The DB’s and LB’s have size and speed. The defensive end position will be a force with Smith coming on board not to mention the Richards. IMO I grade this class a solid B.
"You've got to find your inner pirate" - Mike Leach
Count me in
I’m with you ‘92. I’m not one who memorizes recruiting classes, but this has to be one of our better defensive classes in a long time in terms of overall.
He made a good point in that we really needed to sign a heavy defensive class given all of the offensive players returning. This is pretty logical if you consider the recruiting focus over the past several years. Always seemed a little offensive heavy (but not totally).
Anyway, I’m excited to see how we coach up these kids. It’s a solid start for the new staff IMO.

Admittedly it could have been “offensive heavy” b/c that’s generally where my focus has been in past years. Always leaned toward seeing what receiver or other skill position player we signed to light up the scoreboard.

Tubs Press Conference
Just finished listening to Tubs press conference. I thought he did a really good job. He seems to be really pleased with kids and asked us not to give too much credit to star rating system. Sounds like they signed the kids they wanted. Very impressed with press conference. Go Raiders.
"Credit to the STAR system" says....
Did you see Seth’s stats on the odds each STAR’s chances of being All-American…
5 STAR-1 in 15
4 STAR-1 in 54
3 STAR-1 in 147
2-STAR-1 in 358
So for Tech92 and others that say that a players rating does not count much, the numbers say you are wrong!!!!
CHARTS, I want Charts.
"There's going to be ups and downs but you have to enjoy the battle." Mike Leach
Side note
I read Seth’s stat post and it was interesting.
One thing occurred to me though. Part of getting the votes for All-American has to do with having the name recognition. Don’t get me wrong, the majority of AA’s earn the right by their play on the field as opposed to All-Conference selections (see: Trent Williams, Adam Ulatoski).
But coming in as a highly publicized recruit certainly helps get your name out there to the voters. That compared to a 3 star or 2 star kid who maybe has to play that much better just to get the publicity to be considered for All-American.
Again, just a thought…

Our class was not better because
Tubs was never a great recruiter to start with. This is simple folks, if he is going to take Tech to the next level as promised, it will have to be on the shoulders of his coaching skills and not his ability to bring us better players. History doesn’t lie.
This is not a news flash, info is out there...

You can’t expect someone to come in and in two weeks make a huge impact to recruiting. The fact that we maintained the majority of our class and didn’t get picked apart by other schools in the area is about as good as I was expecting. However I will have higher expectations next year since Tuberville is supposed to be this big name that is supposed to bring us fresh stars from the SEC.
then why are other coaches having success with less time?

Tennesse did pretty damn good
I think most agree that Tommy did a nice job. Not terrible, but not earth shattering either. What that dude in Tennessee did is pretty close to earth shattering. He walked into a town on the verge of riots, with a losing record at Lousiana Tech on his resume, with SEC (and USC) sharks circling, and in less than three weeks from the time he interviewed for the job brought in a ton of new recruits. The day Kiffin left I think Tennessee lost 4 or 5 blue chips. This guy replaced virtually all of them.
I think Tommy did ok and I like some of the speed he found. But it would have been cool to see something a little closer to earth shattering. Does that make me a bad fan?

What you are not saying......
is that this happened at Tenn. Although this won’t always be the case, there is a big difference between Tech and Tenn. For highschool kids growing up in SEC highschools, Tenn is a household, perenneal powerhouse turning out players like P. Manning. Did you watch the Blind Side? We do not yet have that type of money, recruiting, or history here at Tech, even among kids in our own state. Comparing what Tuberville did here and what Tenn did is apples and oranges.
And no, the fact that you post here often, and are passionate about you point of view.....
says just the opposite. You my friend are a great Red Raider fan. Just misguided sometimes due to the chemical imbalance created by the abnormal amount of refried beans you ingest in a typical year. Stay away from those River Walk eateries and you will be ship shape in no time.
The only time we go to the River Walk
is when friends from Lubbock come down. More Boerne, Luckenbach, Fredericksburg and Floores outings in our household.
So your saying it’s not the coach prestige, it’s the school prestige that tilts the scale? And if the roles were reversed, and Tommy was at Tennessee, he would have done better than Dooley given his name recognition?

See how this logic works? It’s like “Ditka” was for Chicago fans.
by raider realist on Feb 4, 2010 2:09 PM CST up reply actions
I think the logic goes the other way....
A monkey could recruit for Tenn or USC given their abilty to recruit at a marquee level for decades. A&M is the perfect example. They are still enjoying top 25 recruiting classes based on success achieved over a decade ago and faciltiies. Even leach could not get us a top 20 class. Bottom line, the Tenn legacy kept that class together.
I want to believe that Tubs will get us to the next level.
Just keep finding a dark underbelly to this guys recruiting history. Several people here have mentioned that they don’t care to learn anything more about his past, and so I’m done directing people to what I think are some pretty insightful discussions on recruiting and where it fits in terms of evaluation programs and coaches. I don’t think were any better for ignoring it, just sense the mood around here is moving in the direction of “be on board or don’t bother contributing.”
by raider realist on Feb 4, 2010 2:34 PM CST up reply actions
I think it is likely...
Tubs is not a top 5 recruiter, and has had his fair share of recruiting mishaps in the past. But not to blow anyones mind, Leach & Co. where poor recruiters in terms of measureables. What he did do was coach up what he got. So in Tubs we get an “above average” recruiting staff, and whether he can coach-up is yet to be determined.
That’s the unicorn isn’t it. Can we take what leach taught us about offense, combine it with a solid defense, and be majic in the living room.

I think we all just want to focus on the future rather than look at his past behavior or methods. Fact is we have him as our coach and we would rather have faith in what he says he will bring to our program. The mood around here more than likely stems from a horrible decision to fire a great coach that brought us success. The hiring of Tuberville gives us a reason to be upbeat about the future and hopefully he delivers. If he doesn’t you can bet we all won’t be singing his praises for very long. For now I just think we have a great hire and look forward to what Tech can possible do in the future. I think contributing for or against is great and you may not always be on the popular side of things but it’s what makes this place a one of the best blog sites. Somewhat of a democracy.

No issue with going against the grain.
By all means, type away if that is what you think. I’m not one who feels the need to change someone’s mind on a particular topic. Really have no problem with a good debate.
Personally, I’m not overly interested in what happened at AUB. I read the article. I tend to think there were more factors in play with that situation than were discussed in that blog post. It’s documented that either the BOR or high-end boosters worked to fly in Patrino for an interview behind-the-scenes. So there were some issues there that played in to Coach T resigning. Just think there is more to the story than below average recruiting.

Are you trying to say that next year he won't do better than this year?
I say give him a whole year to recruit and judge him on that.
by TheScarletandTheBlack on Feb 4, 2010 6:06 PM CST up reply actions
I have no problem with that.
In fact, I give Tubs another two years before I start judging him on recruiting. He’s got to iron out how the team is going to play going forward with his own guys and his own coaches schemes etc.
Next year’s recruits grade will be based partially on the success of this year’s team (Still Leach’s team) and Tubs’ ability to recruit in Texas at Texas Tech.
It won’t really be until after that that we really see Tubs’ “team” and recruiting and players and schemes etc.
I was refering to the “logic” of…
A monkey could recruit for Tenn or USC given their abilty to recruit at a marquee level for decades.
thereby suggusting that because TTU has always struggled at recruiting then Tubs would “logically” not be able to recruit for Tech.

So yes, Tech has struggled, and until we see differently, Tubs should struggle. If he doesn’t even better. Should Post at all or just wait for you to tell me what I said?
"We have a running game at Tech......sometimes we throw short passes." -Mike Leach

You say:
TTU has struggled to recruit = Tubs “logically” will NOT BE ABLE TO RECRUIT.
Shouldn’t that say:
TTU has struggled to recruit = Tubs should struggle too
Who is suggesting that Tech’s recruiting STRUGGLES, mean Tubs will fail? Is struggle and fail the same? Just asking

You said;

…and because you used the word “logic” to formulate your opinion I was only asking if that same “logic” meant that Tech would never get better recruiting for it’s sub-marquee status.

Let's ease up on the criticism of the class today
As I am sure most of you know, I am not a big Tubs fan – but let’s not jump to conclusions about this recruiting class. We should be discussing this recruiting class two years down the road. It is unfair to the coaches, and most important, the players coming in. These kids are excited to be coming to our school. Let’s not prejudge them based on “stars”. Let’s also not judge the football staff until next recruiting class. They did the best they could have done under the circumstances.
So.........how's the weather?
How’s your Mom-n-them? What are we supposed to talk about?
Remember- We are a bunch of grown men (and a few ladies) sitting in front of a computer or smart phone feverishly typing and arguing about high school athletes. While doing so we try to be funny, concise, and not have too many typos. This scenario is precisely what our Founding Fathers had in mind when they signed the Declaration of Independence.
It is our duty as Americans to jump to conclusions, speculate, and wonder if a kid from Arkansas will make our Saturdays more enjoyable. It’s also fun to try and piss each other off…

He is going to be looking for those players being a little bit shorter so they can be quicker and more athletic and support a more physical rushing game.

Recruiting is finished, nothing we can do will bring us those players we want so badly. I think that, with all things considered, we did a damn fine job of getting a good class in this year. To lose everycoach involved with recruiting at the end of December and still come up with this with an early February signing date and still come up with a class to match those of past seasons is a huge deal! If ifs and buts were nuts……..
Yes !
Every star analysis that I have seen, which compares this class to last year’s—the one off of the best football season in the past ten years—results in essentially the same quality class.
The class is not completely defined yet, and will not be until the enrollments are completed.
Then we start the 4-5 year process of evaluating the class.

Totally Agree. 1000%
No hand wringing here. I’m excited about the players we signed.
The bottomline is none of the recruiting rankings ever won a single freaking game, EVER. The recruits contribute to wins and some classes more than others. But this is all speculation b/c none of these kids has played a single down of college ball.
So these services pass out grades, but the reality is some of the kids that signed that contribute to the grade NEVER make it to that campus.
Think of it this way. Let’s say I presented you with a 5 star menu for a steak dinner with all the sides and dessert. And everyone is talking about it and saying holy crap that sounds awesome. But then, I drop the cheesecake on the floor and forget the dressing for the salad and run out of butter for the bread. Well, it’s no longer a 5 star dinner is it?
Same with recruiting. Big grade and score. But we you get kids who don’t actually get to campus, then that is no longer such a great class.

If you drop the cheesecake, you better have another !!!
Goes for the butter also.

I will feel much better when Hance and Meyers are gone. The situation is what it now is. Tubbs is here. We’ll see what he can do. I wish the best for all the former coaches especially the captain. With all of the firings and hirings, the two actual problems remain at Tech, probably thinking everything is going to blow over. For me to move forward the cancer must be removed. Leach needs to take them for everything he can.
Recruiting
Who recruited Adam “dark shed” James to TT?
AJ
Didn’t he come for baseball, and not football?
"But there's one thing about quitters you have to guard against - they are contagious. If one boy goes, the chances are he'll take somebody with him, and you don't want that. So when they would start acting that way, I used to pack them up and get them out, or embarrass them, or do something to turn them around."

Earl Campbell Blown Up by Eric Felton
The earlier reference to Earl Campbell made me remember going to Austin to watch Texas Tech play in 1977 (sophomore year). Eric Felton knocked Earl out cold. They revived Earl on the sidelines with smelling salts and he came back in and ran 60 yards for a touchdown on the first play back. Earl was a human highlight film, but Eric Felton was a Man and one Helluva an athlete (the best I ever played anything against—intramural basketball in this instance). Terrific basketball player. I believe Felton was an eleven year NFL veteran and started six or seven years for the Saints and several years for the Giants. I’d wager Felton’s in better shape today than poor Earl. Earl is absolutely crippled up and a wreck from his playing days.
And dont forget there are several of these who won't qualify.
Plus we’ll have adams scholarship back soon….
