A Quick Recruiting Review
If you just want the baby without the labor pains, here is your one liner: If you loved last years recruiting class, you will love this one as well.
For the rest of you, here is some data on just how good or bad the 2010 class really is. (For this analysis I used info provided by Rivals.com, and used the past four recruiting classes for comparison)
How did we rank among the other Big 12 Programs?
2007: 9th
2008: 10th
2009: 6th
2010: 7th
Bottom Line Our class ranked nearly the same as last years class within the conference, and substantialy better than 2007, and 2008 classes.
How did we rank vs. the rest of NCAA Div.1?
2007: 52nd
2008: 45th
2009: T33rd
2010: 41st
Bottom Line: We achieved our second highest national ranking in the last four years.
What is the "Star" distribution of our class?
Year 4 Stars 3 Stars 2 Stars or less
2007 1 17 8
2008 3 10 3
2009 5 15 5
2010 5 15 5
Bottom Line: We have steadily increased the number of 4 star recruits, maintained the number of 3 star recruits, and reduced the number of 2 or less star recruits. Of note is the identical record between 2009 and 2010.
How did we rank by position (using Rivals Rating)?
POS 2007 2008 2009 2010 2010 Rank
QB 5.2 5.7 5.6 5.8 1st
WR 5.6 X 5.8 5.7 T2nd
DB 5.6 5.5 5.7 5.8 1st
LB X X 5.7 5.6 2nd
DE 5.7 5.9 5.5 6 1st
DT 5.5 5.8 5.7 5.7 2nd
OL 5.8 5.7 5.8 5.6 4th
RB 5.6 5.8 5.8 5.8 T1st
----------------------------------------------------------------
Avg 5.58 5.72 5.71 5.75 1st
Bottom Line: When you break down the classes by position you see that the 2010 class has the highest rated player at each position more often than not. In addition when you look at the avg. totals for the past four years, 2010's Avg. Rivals rating of 5.75 is the highest in the last 4 years.
Net Net: 2010's is nearly identical to the 2009 class when you compare our rankings in the conference, the star distribution, and break it down by position. By position, the 2010 class is actually superior to any class in the last 4 years, including the 2009 class. What is interesting about that is the circumstances. The 2009 class came on the heels of the greatest season in Tech history, a top 5 BCS ranking, a national televised victory over UT, and on the heels of a contract extension for Leach. The 2010 class comes on the heels of an avgerage 9 win season, and the ugliest coaching change in the country. In the end, this class is at worst on par with previous classes, and that credit goes to Leach and his staff for putting it together. A hat tip to Tubs and his staff for keeping it together, and patching where neccesary. Was 2010 the best recruiting class in tech's history? When compared to just Tech classes, that arguement could be supported by the data. If compared to the rest of the country, it fell a little short. At the end of day, given where we have been, I'll take that.

I would not get too wrapped up in the STARS...........
per Scout, sweet baby james had 3 stars………….go figure………….

Once again guys look at the math........
Did you see Seth’s stats on the odds each STAR’s chances of being All-American…
5 STAR-1 in 15
4 STAR-1 in 54
3 STAR-1 in 147
2-STAR-1 in 358
So for Tech92 and others that say that a players rating does not count much, the numbers say you are wrong!!!!
(see my comment to your two or three other posts saying this)
All Americans…pfffft. We have not exactly churned them out in great numbers since ever.
...and we haven't exactly won the Big 12 south either...
..and that was with the Pirate(long live your inner Pirate!!)…
Now we have Tommy Ball???
Tech won the Big 12 South in 2008
The BCS computers selected Oklahoma to represent the South in the title game, but we were co-champions.

we didn't win anything.....
That is a called a contested championship. We have no uncontested south championships.

By that logic, Nobody won the South that year
And yet Nobody played in the national title game. Not bad for a Nobody. Or one of the three Nobodies.

No, no...by all means....
Set your sights on on a “push” for your measure of success. I’m just going to try and aim a little higher.

Aim all you want
But in 50 years of SWC/Big 12 football TTU has never had a solo title. So denigrating one of the 3 times in those 50 years we shared the title is pointless. We are what we are until we become something else. Dressing up like Pollyanna won’t move us up to the next level.

Really?
Try telling that to the team that WON that championship.
Tell them they didn’t win anything.

Not sure who you are talking about....Oklahoma?
"We have a running game at Tech......sometimes we throw short passes." -Mike Leach
Wait, are you saying Tech "rightfully" won the south that year?
"We have a running game at Tech......sometimes we throw short passes." -Mike Leach
Co-Champion
Identical records, round robin defeats among the tied teams. Tech rightfully won the Big 12 South title in 2008. UT rightfully won the Big 12 South Title in 2008. Oklahoma rightfully won the Big 12 South title in 2008.

The NCAA and the Big 12 would disagree with you...
and since we a play a game, by their rules, which are clearly spelled out prior to each season, this is just revisionist history. You never answered my question of how a tie in sports could be a win, but then again, it was rhetorical. It can’t.
"We have a running game at Tech......sometimes we throw short passes." -Mike Leach
So the fact that Oklahoma blew us out head to head...
means nothing? We will just sweep that little factoid under the rug. hey and purple ribbons for everyone! Everybody is a winner!

OK beat TTU who beat UT who beat OU who beat TTU who beat UT who beat OU

Nice signature.......did that cleverness come from the Notre Dame side of the family?

Mom & Dad went to St Mary’s & Notre Dame, so both sides were taught by South Bend priests and nuns. My experience with priests and nuns has been that cleveness is pretty far down on their scale of human virtues.
My sig is sincere. I fing hate ‘just sayin’". A reviewer in the Dallas Morning News used it yesterday. It’s everywhere.

My first job out of Tech was for a finance company in NY
There was this guy who started with me from ND, actually two of them, but anyway they were so pro-ND, and made so much fun of TTU. Luckily this was during the Ty Willingham years and they subsequently missed a bowl or two. Ever since I have hated ND Football. But secretly, that is probably the only private school I would be willing to pay for my boys to go to.
"We have a running game at Tech......sometimes we throw short passes." -Mike Leach
And your wrong....
Tech did not win the big 12 south, we tied with two other teams. In what sport. anywhere, does a tie go down as a win for any of the teams involved?
"We have a running game at Tech......sometimes we throw short passes." -Mike Leach
I'm honestly not concerned about having All-Americans.
I’d rather have players that will play their asses off.

I agree . . . but I don’t have a problem with All-Americans playing their collective asses off.

What you fail to account for...
is that for every 5 star that makes All American… there are 14 that did not.
For every 4 star that makes All American… there are 53 that do not.
For every 3 star that makes All American… there are 146 that do not.
Those are the numbers….. and while the chances for success might be higher for a 5 or 4 star recruit…. it still boils down to heart, desire, and the COACHES that prepare them.
Give me a bunch of 3 star recruits with heart, and you will see a team that is very dangerous.
Katy High School rarely has the 4 star recruits Northshore of Elsik have… but they kick their butt every year and have won 3 state championships this decade. It’s about the team.
River Boat Gamblers are ALL IN!
Coach Lee...
Thanks for pointing out the math!!!!
It is the Coaching....
Leach did the most with the “stars” he had. The school is still out for Tuberville.

This is good information. Thanks for the wrap up.

Any negatives that have come out of this Class have to be placed squarely @ the feet of the Admin. and all the positives of holding what the Pirate had done has to be placed @ the feet of the South Plains Drifter. Now next year we will see what the SPD can do on his own. Overall, a class that addresses certain positions and still brought some great players to TTech. Wreck’Em Tech
TTUMAR, Well done !
If one is going to look at rankings, this is a good perspective, nicely done !!!

Good analysis
I believe we signed a solid class. There is a lot of speed, several early hitters, and only a handful of grade risks. A lot of people are going to understandably be down about losing out on Boone, Kitchens, and Ferguson. I would be dishonest if I said that I wasn’t hopeful of inking at least one of them — especially on the defensive side (I have always thought Corker was better than Boone). At the same time, I am ecstatic that two stud defensive recruits struggled in their decision between Texas Tech and a recent national champion program (Florida for Kitchens; LSU for Ferguson) with NO visits and only a couple of weeks of recruiting. Give the staff a full year to work contacts, meet the mama’s, get the kids in here, put down the new turf, tear down the shed, and we will be on the receiving end of the Kitchens’ and Ferguson’s.
Thanks for your work TTUMAR
I am excited about this class – don’t care who gets credit – blah, blah, blah – going to reserve my judgement about Tubs recruiting or lack of recruiting ability until the 2011 class. Wreck em!!
All things considered - well done.
Listen, I’m pretty happy today. Tech deals with some fairly stark realities. I love Tech, but we’re wearing handcuffs. We are still in Lubbock. (Yeah, I love it and you love it – but let’s face it, unless you grew up out there, you probably had no idea that you would ever love it so much before you got there.) Our stadium can still only hope to sell out at 55,000 on a regular basis, and we still aren’t mentioned in the same breath with Texas, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Florida, USC, LSU, Georgia, Alabama, Penn State, Ohio State and any other Pedigree U. (our list of brethren contains schools like BYU, Cal, VT, Old Miss, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Wisconsin, Oregon, Arizona, Arizona State, etc etc – and that ain’t bad) If you don’t think those things matter in recruiting, God love ya man – I love your spirit. I am much more interested in how we compare to schools that suffer from something similar our particular handicaps. While there is room to improve – I think we did as well as we could have hoped for considering who we are and recent events. Can we win a national championship – yeah we can. Will all of the stars need to be aligned (ala BYU, VT, Colorado, etc) for it to happen? Absolutely. Texas and OU aren’t going anywhere. We could beat them 10 years in a row – they will still get the top recruits over us. Hell even A&M gets top recruits over us – and it isn’t because they have such great coaching. It’s location, stadium size and pedigree. (I know, I know… but they are considered be a top program “in waiting” regardless of actual performance) I just don’t think we should be all that disappointed when we keep getting solid recruiting classes every year. We done good, boys. Now let’s all drink a cold one and feel good for a change.
A solid assesment.

After all your work I hate to ask for one more stat ...
but I will anyway …
How did we rank in the Big 12 south? …. we continue to be mid range in the Big 12 … but if Baylor ranked out better this year, I’m guessing we were last in the south
Great job! Thanks for the breakdown
But my concern really isn’t much on the pre-determined caliber of new recruits. My major concern is reserved for our new coaches. I know they are used to getting many “high ranked” recruits and coaching them to victory, but what I would like to know is how well they coach up players that are not as “highly ranked”. I understand that my statements almost contradict one another, but the point is good coaches work with what we have in order to win. (For the record, what we have are GREAT players) We have never really had incredible recruits, so I just pray that our new staff has the talent to tap the potential each and every one of our players possesses…
Last in the south
tech83 rivals ranked us 8th in the Big 12 one behind Baylor. I have the same worries that you do. Granted we will not know the true outcome of this class for two more years, but as mentioned in my ealrier note you can look at all the signees from Texas, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M, and you will not see Tech listed gong after any of those kids. The reason is simple, we are Lubbock, our stadium only seats 55,000, and we could not even sell it out for Oklahama this year. As Dunka said, Leach got a lot out of these kids, even if he had to put them in a darl place every now and then. Lets hope that Tubs can coach them up.
Our stadium actually seats 61,000 and change, starting next year. 59,000 for the last part of last year. We couldn’t sell it out for OU b/c tickets were 95 and went on sale for the additional seats about 3 weeks before the game. If Tubs has an inkling of sense he will ask the prices to be lowered for the expansion sections and fill the sucker up. Lower the new seats to $35 for premium games and its full. Myers can’t run anything. Obviously.
This was a good class
Loaded up on defense. LOTS of speed. In the day and age of spread attacks, you got to keep up with those speedy receivers and backs. The offensive recruiting isnt exactly slim pickens either. We got a future stud in scotty young, the speedester ben mcroy, and maybe a crabtree type in corker. I CANT WAIT FOR THE SPRING GAME! WRECK’EM!

Is Robert Prunty in Lubbock?
Just a weird thought, but I don’t think that Robert Prunty from Hargrave was officially announced as a hire today, or did i miss it? Have we actually hired him?
Look, I'm not sitting in the UT coaches seat, but....
Looking at the total picture of the Tech coaching staff, the players returning and the new class,I’m a little uneasy.
Well Chuck, i think I can speak for all at DTN....
when I say we would be happy to address your “uneasyness”. Just tell us exactly what you are worried about?
Just trying to look at it from Mack's seat
I’m not uneasy about where we stand, but the Mack and Bob show will be in it up to their eyeballs. Sorry if I wasn’t so clear with my wording, too long on the west coast I guess.
Ha ha! You mean the Mack and Bob show is about to go down the “Tube” :)
