Recruiting on the High Plains :: "Players are made when they get here."

Texas Tech Head Coach, Tommy Tuberville:  This class is very good. You won’t hear a lot of the experts say that ‘They didn’t rank in the Top 20 or the Top 10’. I coached at Miami for nine years. We won three national championships and we went to national championship games six times and we never had a Top 10 recruiting class. Players are made when they get here. You go back to and look at their athletic ability. They obviously are going to have to have some. It’s the determination and the attitude and how they grow and how they proper so to speak when they get on your campus. This group is a very good class and I think there’s going to be some areas that will be better than others just because of numbers. But, I’m excited about it and I know our coaches are and we’re looking forward to getting them here on campus.

Scouring the Interwebs

The LAJ has a partial transcript to Tuberville's press conference from yesterday.  This is a must read and there are so many things to pull from this, that the best thing that you can do is go read the whole thing.  The DT posted a couple of minutes of video of yesterday's press conference.

LAJ's Don Williams asks and answers 6 questions about the current class and among other things, Don gives some insight about having a relatively limited class next year (maybe only 13 scholarships available) and which players might not qualify and will be headed to the JUCO route:

Tuberville said he’d like to have more like 20 scholarships because of the depth of talent in Texas high schools next fall. It could work out that way because of the 25 new players, Tuberville said it’s likely only 18 to 20 will meet initial eligibility requirements.

Running back Delans Griffin, offensive lineman Aleon Calhoun and defensive end Lawrence Cayou are among those who might be detoured to a junior college. Tuberville said he believes every player he signs can earn a degree at Tech. But everywhere he’s coached, he said he’s placed signees in junior colleges with plans to re-sign them two years later.

"Each one of my coaches, they’ve got to find at least one great player that they can put in a juco,’’ Tuberville said. "You do that with seven, eight, nine of those a year, you can win a lot of games (down the road) like that.’’

FWST's Jimmy Burch writes that Tuberville didn't win any wars yesterday, but it was good enough:

Tom Luginbill, ESPN's national recruiting director, sympathizes deeply with first-year coaching staffs on National Signing Day.

Coaches with programs in transition mode, such as Texas Tech's Tommy Tuberville, always find themselves pulling double duty in the film room during a pivotal stretch of the recruiting calendar when peers have honed in on the final handful of prospects they seek to sign.

That makes it hard to match recruiting grades with established coaches such as Texas' Mack Brown and Oklahoma's Bob Stoops, who have been at their schools for at least a decade and -- again -- finished 1-2 in the league's annual talent haul, as judged Wednesday by recruiting analysts.

No surprise there. Programs with the longest-tenured coaches typically win recruiting wars in every conference.

And Burch talks with ESPN analyst Tom Luginbill about the message that Tuberville is trying to get out to recruits:

"I've had conversations with coach Tuberville [recently] and the No. 1 thing he's done is tried to make sure the message has gotten across that he's not trying to re-invent the wheel offensively," Luginbill said. "He views this challenge to be purely defensive. By improving that, he could elevate them to a level they could be a team to contend with in the Big 12."

Miscellaneous Links:  LAJ's Courtney Linehan writes that Tuberville did okay considering the time . . . LAJ's Don Williams writes that defensive line coach Charlie Sadler has officially retired and hired is Tarleton State's head coach Sam McElroy and there are a couple of snipets to highlight from this article, as Tuberville is putting a premium on coaches than can recruit:

"I can hire a lot of people that can put Xs and Os on the board,’’ Tuberville said. "We’re going to have recruiters here. Guys that enjoy recruiting, that No. 1 can evaluate, and that No. 2, can do a great job of representing Texas Tech and selling what we have here.

"There’s not one guy that I can say, ‘He’s a little bit weak in recruiting.’ That’s not going to happen with us. You have to have nine very good ones.’’

. . . and Tuberville announced where his staff will coach:

Other than offensive coordinator Neal Brown and defensive coordinator James Willis, Tech has not announced any of the new assistants. However, Tuberville outlined their assignments Wednesday in his national signing day news conference.

McElroy will coach nose tackles and defensive tackles, Willis will tutor inside linebackers, and Robert Prunty will oversee outside linebackers. Travaris Robinson will coach defensive backs with help from graduate assistant Duane Price, who was a safety and a cornerback during his Tech playing career.

Tuberville also confirmed his offensive staff assignments: Brown (quarterbacks), Chad Scott (running backs), Matt Moore (linemen), Sonny Cumbie (inside receivers) and Tommy Mainord (wide receivers). Cumbie was recently promoted from the offense’s graduate assistant, so that position is open.

"I’m going to be head special teams coach — and get ready,’’ Tuberville said with a chuckle.

Surprises

I had no idea that either DE Lawrence Cayou and ILB Cqulin Hubert were even on Texas Tech's radar.  Cayou had originally committed to SMU and Hubert was originally committed to Iowa St.  Here's their information:

Lawrence Cayou
Position: DE : YouTube: N/A : Rivals Profile: Scout Profile: ESPN Profile 40 Grade
Ht: 6'4" : Wt: 255 lbs : Forty: N/A : High School: McDonogh 35 (New Orleans, LA)

Cqulin Hubert
Position: OLB : YouTube: Clip 1 Clip 2 : Rivals Profile: Scout Profile: ESPN Profile 76 Grade
Ht: 6'1" : Wt: 215 lbs : Forty: 4.90 : High School: Eisenhower (Houston, TX)

We'll get into this a bit later, but these projects, like Cayou, Hubert, Whigham, Warren and Jones, are all projects that are built on either being really fast or being a projectable athlete.  I've read that Hubert ran a 5.16 in the 40 because he was injured, but his film says that he's faster than a 5.16 and a player like that doesn't work himself into the backfield like that if he runs that slow of a 40 time.  The ESPN profile had Hubert at a 4.90 and that wouldn't be too bad for an inside linebacker, but he still looks quicker than that.

I think it's also important to point out that Tuberville dropped DE Kedrick Dial (6-4/215) and he looks like he'll eventually become a solid 4-3 defensive end, probably topping out at around 240.  Meanwhile, Tuberville went out after Cayou, who already has the size to play as a 3-4 defensive end and with a little time in the weight room, he could be up to 270 by the time he's ready to play.  Cayou is projected to be more of a project than Dial, but truthfully, if Dial were going to stick at Texas Tech, he's have to play outside linebacker.

What's the Difference

I can say one thing for certain, that I believe (and this thought isn't original) that both recruiting services intentionally keep how they score classes and rank teams marked "TOP SECRET" in order to keep the buzz around the whole process. In fact, last year, a USC fan created a Google Spreadsheet where he apparently cracked the mythical Rivals.com code when there was an uproar as to why Alabama passed LSU at the last minute of the "recruiting national championship". Just for fun, here's the teams that finished in front of Texas Tech in the final recruiting rankings:

Team Commits Avg. Star Rivals Points
Texas 25 3.92 2,728.00
Oklahoma 29 3.55 2,213.00
Texas A&M 23 3.35 1,587.00
Missouri 23 3.30 1,446.00
Nebraska 21 3.24 1,407.00
Oklahoma St. 27 3.19 1,170.00
Baylor 23 3.09 1,025.00
Texas Tech 25 3.00 986.00

Nationally, Texas Tech finished with a 3.00 average star per player, which was better than the 38th ranked team in Mississippi St. and the 40th ranked team in BYU. Miami (Da U) finished with 28 commits, which is 3 over the 25 limit and that means that 3 players won't qualify or some player on their team won't have a scholarship starting in the fall. The Canes had an average star of 3.09, 6 4-star players and 18 3-star players. Rivals seems to reward teams that over sign on players and someone will have to explain why Miami finished with 361 more Rivals points yet only had 1 more 4-star player and 3 more 3-star players than Texas Tech. In the top Rivals top 10 recruiting classes, 5 teams over-signed on the 25 clas limit (Florida 28; Auburn 32, Alabama 26, Oklahoma 29 and LSU 29). I'm sure I'm missing something here, but that just doesn't seem that there should be some sort of reward for signing too many players.

Let's look at Baylor. The Bears finished with 2 less recruits, 1 less 4-star player, but had 2 more 3-star players and as a result finishes with a higher Rivals score score. Does 1 4-star player outweigh 2 3-star players? I have no idea, but apparently Rivals does.

Something similar could be said about Oklahoma St. The Cowboys also signed 5 4-star players and 22 3-star players, but they also oversigned in their class by 2, which means that 2 of this group won't qualify. Should those guys be counted in the ranking points? The same could be said for Texas Tech as I'd imagine that not every player that's signed will qualify, but you get the point.

It's silly.

Yet, we cuss and discuss the rankings and thoughts, but the truth is that there's only so much that can or will make sense.

Down, but Slightly Down

So the offense had a slight decline over 2009 for reasons discussed 1,000 different places. Had Boone and a couple of the other offensive linemen signed then perhaps the average is a bit better, but overall, I think the offensive class is fairly solid. Obviously, you'd prefer that guys like Boone attend Texas Tech than some other school, but I'm not crying over his decision either.

I updated this spreadsheet from last year just to give you an idea as to where this class sits in respect to previous years, and DTN contributors LondonRaider and TTUMAR have given their two cents as well, but I don't think it's a stretch to say that this class is fairly on par with last year.  The only discrepancy is missing out on Boone, which I don't think is going to be an the worst thing ever.  Keep in mind that in last year's class, players like Aaron Fisher, E.J. Celestie, Derrick Mays and Eric Ward all were highly touted, especially Ward.  In fact, Ward is a couple of inches shorter than Boone, but runs a 4.4 rather than a 4.5 or 4.6.  Ward is a guy that's practically forgotten, but he shouldn't be.

I'd also like to add that Texas Tech has already essentially signed a 4-star WR in Javares McRoy for the 2011 class by securing the services of his brother RB/WR Benjamin McRoy this year.  Ben will greyshirt all of this year, which means that he's taking the path similar to Lyle Leong and he won't count against the 25 scholarship limit this year, but Ben and Javares will start at Texas Tech at the same time.  I know it's fashionable not to give too much credit to the current staff, but the fact that they were able to secure the McRoy brothers already puts the 2011 class on the right foot.

And it's been mentioned before, that this offense (and really you could say this about just about any offense) has been predicated on excellent play from the quarterback position, and Texas Tech signed the best one in the state of Texas.  Here's Tuberville on his future signal caller:

He brings a lot of athletic ability to the table and I think that he’s going to be an exceptional quarterback. Again, there’s a lot that out there that has to be determined on whether he can handle this kind of scenario. But, just visiting with him, he’s a very mature young man that I think is going to be a heck of a quarterback for us. He’s got some good older guys in front of him that he’ll be able to learn from. I like his release. I like the way he gets rid of the football. He’s very competitive which is a big attribute for a quarterback playing at the college level.

All About Speed and Athleticism

Only one year since 2002 did Leach recruit more players on defense.  For those of you who don't remember that 2006 class, Leach signed 34 players (yep, you read that correctly) and 19 of those 34 players were defensive players.  Still, this year's class is all about potential and speed.  Looking at the players that were no longer committed at Texas Tech, it seems as if Tuberville put a bigger emphasis on speed, speed, speed.  Here's Tubervile:

Also in this class, we looked for speed. And this entire team will be built on speed as long as I’m here. Speed will win games for us. I don’t look at the height. I don’t look at the weight. I look how fast they can run and how quick they are. If they can have a couple of those qualities, this football team will get better and better.

Of the players that Tuberville signed, including some of the surprise players mentioned above, Tuberville went for a defensive back that runs a 4.38 in Phillip Warren and another defensive back that may be one of the better athletes of the class in Lavaughn Whigham.  Tuberville put a premium on speed along the defensive line, signing smaller defensive tackles in Mike Jones, but Jones also has the ability to be incredibly quick along the line.

I think there's also something to the idea that when a team signs a class, it's a crap-shoot in more ways that one.  I've done this before, but the truth is that any given recruiting class you can take about half of those players and they won't have an effect on the program in any meaningful way.  But with more players to work with, the coaching staff will have an opportunity to hopefully mold some of these players into solid contributors.

The other thought is that Tuberville is definitely putting an emphasis on defense, in particular the defensive line.  Here's Tuberville on the defense:

There’s a reason for that. We need more defensive players. The one area we really need players was at the defensive linemen position and we signed eight. That will pay dividends for us. I’ve told people for years, they look at all these recruiting ratings and the great players-the four and five star players. However, you can throw it all out and grade the defensive linemen that you recruited.

Never has the offense to defense ratio been so lopsided.  Leach's biggest criticisms was that he was too loyal to those around him, which included holding onto DC Lyle Setencich too long and maybe promoting DC Ruffin McNeill from within the program rather than look outside the program.  There's nothing wrong with that and I believe that McNeill did a terrific job last year in grabbing a handful of players that are projected to be impact players, but the tables may be turned a bit, at least for this year, in that Tuberville obviously wanted to put an emphasis on the defensive side of the ball, maybe inject a bit of new blood into a unit that hasn't received proper attention under Leach until he allowed McNeill to do his thing.

Blackbeard thinks all in all this is a good class (third person thursday)

My only question is tt’s comment about sending recruits to JC. I would think that it would be important to get the guys here and redshirt or not, at leastt expose them to what it will take to come down the tunnel on Saturdays and to learn the tt “system”.
It’s a struggle to come up with the right words here, but is there a hint that academics are just a little bit secondary?

Not really

Junior college is for those players who do not academically qualify for Division 1. If they don’t qualify academically then they can’t have a scholarship or be part of the team, and that includes redshirting. They go to JUCO to get their academics up to qualify as well as to play football and develop during those 2 years.

Blackbeard is not criticizing

just asking about this as part of the tt system. Seems to me that there are a lot of these that might not ever qualify and therefore our effort would be wasted. just askin’

TF isn't sure

But he is guessing that there are two kinds of players who go to Juco to get their grades up – those that don’t qualify so they get no interest or offers, and those who don’t qualify but they still had a team making them offers. TF is assuming that giving them the offer gives them motivation to work on their grades knowing that a good team is out there waiting for them. It would also help build some loyalty against other teams who show up later and try to recruit them.

Take this 4-star DE Smith that we got. TF is assuming he didn’t have any offers out of HS, or if he did they dropped him like a hot rock when he didn’t qualify. Otherwise we’d have had more competition signing him.

Side note on Juco

So I used to run in to Sonny Dykes from time to time back when we were a couple of years out of school. At the time, he was coaching at Navarro JC.

What I never realized is the level of talent (specifically at Navarro JC at that time) some of these Juco’s have on the roster. He basically said most of these kids didn’t qualify so they would end up having unbelievable talent on their roster.

So if you have some time on your hands and you’re local to a good JC program, you might check out one of their games. You will likely be watching kids that will be notable players in the future at some D1 school.

Grew up in a JUCO town

There are some monsters there and had a blast attending the games on Saturdays. I took some classes out there at our JC while I was in HS and yes, there are some incredibly uneducated kids amonst the ranks, not neccessarily dumb, but incredibly failed by terrible schools systems they attended K-12. Eye opener for me to realize my little small town school taught me so much and these kids from huge cities were graduating HS on an 8th grade level at times.

for mentioning that it’s often times the school system that fails the student and not the other way around.

Ah - jeffinhouston misunderstood the blackbeard

Yes, I believe part of Tubs system is to target highly regarded players who may not qualify, recruit them, place them into JUCO (or Hargrave?), and keep in contact with them so that they come back to the program when they qualify

Isn't it basically what has been happening with a number of TTU's JC's ?

DE Dixon is the first example…one of failure in that he did not go on to graduation.

2 things

1. I too worry about the JC strategy. We also could lose them in 2 years, and are academics going to be ignored? 2. I like speed. We have always needed it on defense. I look at this class with an abundance of secondary recruits, and some over 6’, and wonder if some can bulk up, keep there speed, and move to Linebacker. That was the Jimmy Johnson strategy. I see the best defense taking shape in the Big 12 over next few years. Wreck Em!!!!

I just commented that we may have been doing this in the past w/JC's.

Perhaps there is an adder—and maybe it is also part of what has been happening in the past. Coach T spoke to placing certain players in JC. It could imply that the guys he places, having passed all his other initial evaluations; character, ability as a student, ability as a football player, is deemed worthy of the risk…and that he and staff work with the player and family in finding a quality JC program for him to develop…a la Hargrave or a JC equivalent.

The thing is that when I try to gather what Coach T is communicating, I cannot see where he is going with some of these thoughts as a comparison to where we were because Coach L did not speak to them…Coach L’s program is essentially my only baseline for knowledge about these kinds of college football issues.

HR is still confused about the JC strategy...

Not sure if it’s “bad”….
May even like it….
But if “Players are made when they get here,” wouldn’t it be better to sign ones that are really going to get here? Or get here earlier?

Sidenote: Please don’t mistake HR’s confusion for negativism… Sincerely a lttle confused on this one… Never really considered such a strategy before…

I would put "prep-schools" and JCs in the same category.

Both are destinations for atheletes with the skills to play D-1 football, but who do not have the grades to qualify. A perfect example would be to review the players who have come from Hargrave Military. If that startegy wasn’t used, and those players were not allowed to qualify for D-1 ball, we would have been out alot of the best college football had to offer in the last few years.

So the answer is these kids spend a semester or so at a prep-school or JC, get their grades above par, and then pick up with their college career on the D-1 level. Or they don;t get their grades up, and disappear into the abyss.

by TTUMAR on Feb 4, 2010 2:25 PM CST up reply actions

I would add......

that most of the kids are offered during or before their junior year. A D-1 recruiting staff has no control how the “student-athlete” performs in class his last year of high-school.

by TTUMAR on Feb 4, 2010 2:26 PM CST up reply actions

Indeed, but the most significant is the last semester of school.

There are a set of grades that can be reviewed before signing day that reflect the first semester of school.

It is the one’s who are signed, but look iffy that become targets for JC or prep school.

I suck at 3rd person

Seth – Great, great write up. Really good analysis here. The point that Coach T and staff were basically spending time evaluating the commits on film and reveiwing transcripts while other teams were way beyond that point is interesting. I think it is fair and is good perspective.

Great point about the talented guys we signed last year. Always seems to happen when NSD rolls around, everyone loses sight of the guys already on the team who maybe didn’t get playing time or maybe red-shirted. We’re solid offensively and are now bringing talent in on defense.

I’m optimistic about next year. Take good notes (and pic’s) at the dinner tonight. Have fun

Oldguy says it's up to the players and the coaches now

We’ll now get to see if these coaches can coach these players up to the Big 12 level of play. If they can, Tuberville will be hailed a genius. If not, it’ll be a long season of disappointment.

Oh- let’s not forget that the Board of Regents in the old ivory tower will be very interested as well.

Speed.....

This is a very general statement I know but the beef with Leach was that we needed a better defense….. the Admin. made the Pirate walk the plank, so we get the South Plains Drifter who loves defense and then recruits to it. And SPD gets blasted by some. Please anyone who thinks the auburn o will appear again just go back and find out the “culture” and why it didn’t work there. I beleive SPD is smart, he has the players, fan support, and one of the Pirate’s old players to run the “Air Raid”. Will it be the Pirate O? Not exactly but all our wants on defense from the past will take shape over the next few years. Rememer it appears TTech is @ least 10 deep @ WR and all are underclassmen. SPD just needs to get a top WR next year. Watch out for the Hargrave connection cause that could be big down the road!!!! Good class overall!!! Wreck’Em Tech

Top WR for next year

Already has one in Javares McRoy who is projected as one of the two top WRs in FL for 2010 season. He committed along with older brother Ben who signed in this class. Tub said Ben was good. Wait until you see Javares. These two kids must be motivated as they are looked after by a guardian.

Not likely

They are a package deal and they wanted to play together. If Ben changed his mind then he would have to sit out a year and lose that year of eligibility. No reason to think that would happen.

They loved their visit with Tech’s new coaching staff and the the feeling was mutual.

As long as we're talking package deals.

I’ll take those Sims cousins from Abilene High. I know they’re small, but they’re dynamic. I hope Texas overlooks them because that QB one has alot of McCluster in him.

Considering everything

With all the drama surrounding the program in late 2009 – early 2010, I thought the new staff did a great job of keeping all the key pieces and adding some nice speed to the class. I would have loved to seen us get Kitchens to the South Plains but I won’t lose any sleep over it.

Now, how many wins will Tubs get his first season?

2010 no like the hype

2010 would like a little more honesty in the star factor, and a little more transparency in the numbers. Things that don’t compute tend to hurt my head.

2010 feels like a 9 win year including the bowl game. All things considered, I would take that, including 2 wins over these three teams: OU, UT, ATM.

2010 also feels the need. The need for Speed. Highway 82 to the danger zone.

by Raider2010 on Feb 4, 2010 9:45 AM CST reply actions

I think we can win 10 or more games depending on how the offense meshes. We were very inconsistent offensively on O last year and still won 9 games. We were within striking distance in 3 of our 4 losses. UH, UT, OSU. I think better qb play and redzone efficiency and we come away with 2 of those.

Uh, if we 2 out of 3 from OU, UT, and ATM and then only have 8 regular season winds that would make no sense. You prediction is that we lose games to MU, CO, BU, or what?

by logan5555 on Feb 4, 2010 1:04 PM CST up reply actions

This is a little off the subject of the main thread, but here goes.
9 wins, 4 losses (bowl game included)
The undefeated bar is a little to high. Fewer wins than last year is a let down. I agree that a play here and there would have given us two more wins last year (houston and OSU). I never said I wouldn’t take a 10 or 11 win season.

My prediction based on nothing more than my oversized gut feeling. Here are the losses:
(SMU, OU, Houston, bowl) I think SMU is on the increase and the first game is going to be rough. OU away is a hard game to win. The last game with Houston stuck out. Houston is also a team on the rise and we tend to let lesser teams get to close at the end of the season (baylor 2 years ago).

I think we will beat Texas (who is going to have a worse season) and ATM.

Nice prediction. Maybe its because I’m an accountant but this prediction certainly doesn’t go along with probabilities for me. If we lose to SMU you will see a revolt. We are much less likely to loss to UT, A&M, or any other big 12 team. That being said, its your prediction and I respect it.

If we don’t win 10 next year, for me its a bust.

Am I the only one who picked up on Coach Tuberville's comments about another subtle change for the Offense?

Centers and guards will be shorter than in the past so they can be more athletic and quicker to bring a more physical aspect to the running game…or words to that effect.

That as a philosophy could have been in play during this OL recruiting season and part of why we did not retain some of the OL guys that we had on the commit list.

Add that to the expressed goal of wanting more people on the DL, the perception of better OL prospects next season, and you have a pretty neatly bundled story….

Isn't it great that Tub doesn't worry about what we fret about

Many of us focused on Boone and star ratings and wondered why certain recruits slipped away suggesting all sorts of negative reasons and neglect. Recruiting is like warfare where deception is important and quiet movement valuable in achieving what you want. We don’t know half about Boone that the staff does. Maybe they decided he didn’t fit. Tub said he can’t comment on unsigned recruits and really doesn’t care to let out what he thinks of some of them. When some a week or so back began to suggest that maybe some on the list were going away on their own due to change of mind, Tech’s change of mind or mutual, they were on the right track.

If you are not already, it is time to be a little more forgiving of the staff and get on board. After all, the third highest NFL draft pick ever from Tech (Dave Parks was a #1 and Donny Anderson a #7, but as a junior to get the rights to him after his senior year) was an no star kid who played QB in HS but became a superstar with one year of conversion. Signing recruits is the college equivalent of the draft. You never know who is going to make it. Ask Bart Starr. Look at Steven Sheffield.

by PacRaider on Feb 4, 2010 10:52 AM CST reply actions

Chris Level had a take on Boone...

(see FanPosts). Basically, he described him as having committed to TTU in August sight unseen because of the offense, but with the intention of visiting other schools. Once he saw the facilities at LSU, he was hooked. It obvously wasn’t the attraction of the LSU offense vs the TTU offense that lured him away.

by natkcole on Feb 4, 2010 12:07 PM CST up reply actions

Not only that

But after he did finally visit Tech he didn’t rally say much (if anything) about liking what was going on here. Instead he just said that he would be taking visits to other campuses.

Even if Leach was still the coach, I don’t think we get him.

LAJ Redraider.com has become a “whipping” with all the ignorance posted on fan comments, which is why I am now choosing to share my 2 cents with all of you dedicated Raider Fandom.
As former Tech student, born in Lubbock, who is now living in Fort Worth, married to a Horned Frog, and friends with Coach P, I can tell you that the job (coaching hires and recruiting) that Tuberville has been able to accomplish in his short window is pretty amazing. Recruiting classes are NOT an exact science, just as the NFL Draft is not. While it is true that a players athleticism is key, mental strength along with superior coaching is paramount. We (Tech) are lucky to have Tuberville. He is an excellent head coach and has knack for bringing out the best in his players. Not to mention his defensive prowess. All this talk about on other blogs about, “we’re not going to score 40+ points anymore!” is crap. I am/was a Leach and Ruff supporter, however I can’t tell you how many times my heart fell when we (Tech) would lose to inferior opponents. I can almost guarantee that Tuberville will not allow this to happen. Keep the faith my fellow Raiders and please be patient. After all, as my purple coaching friend always says about recruits, “There all paper tigers. They’ve always been paper tigers. It’s how they’re going to turn out here in five years.” GO…FIGHT…WIN!!!

SARR likes the extra mustard in Wrench's post.

It’s good to throw out a few 3rd person accolades for yourself. SARR is strong like bull!

The only concern about next years class though is the number of spots available. 13 maybe? We’ve already got one verbal. Total speculation but we’ll probably get a few more in the coming months, and will be tilted toward defense. Will we need to use a spot for a kicker?

If so, maybe we only sign 4 or 5 offensive players next year? Are we tracking a QB?

SARR (who is a total badass) is thinking way too far ahead, but hopes we recognize our offense in 2015.

offense is in for next year’s class. We’ve always had kids come here for our offense and with the pirate gone they just don’t know what our offense will look like.

2010 should be a10 win season

Lots of good input about many topics. I too am a recent new entry into DTN. What I was most impressed about Tubs press conference yesterday was his desire to add more speed to the defense. I think we all paniced when we saw A&M quarterback running out of the pocket and watch our linebackers reach for the oxygen mask trying to catch him. Sounds like DLine is going to be better and we will have more speed. Ruff had a good scheme, but Leach put more into offensive fire power, which I don’t disagree with. The catch here is if Tubs can keep the offensive fire power, and then hold defesne and create a few turnovers, then home victory over Texas and road victories over OU and A&M are not out of the question. And can we all at least agree what a healthy Shefield at the beginning of the season will mean to this tema. Sticks is a gammer. I am really excited about next year, and can’t wait for spring ball. Has to 10 win season, with possible BCS bid. Go Raiders.

Happy to share the "virgin" blog with you Btech...

I also agree with you that a 10 win season is VERY realistic next year. Although if we’re 9-4 again, I wouldn’t call that a disappointment either. Neal Brown will keep our offense balanced and James Willis will prevent our defense from being that leaky sieve that we’ve witnessed for the past 10 years. TU will give us fits as they always do, as will OU, OSU and a much improved – and try not to laugh too hard – Baylor (assuming Smith is at the QB helm). If we squeak out 2 wins from this group, the rest should work itself out.

ATM is not forgotten...

TTUMAR, I should’ve mentioned ATM as well in my group of land mine games (TU, OU, OSU & Baylor). I’m almost tempted to put Houston in this group as well, however we ALL know we should’ve beatin’ them in that wet, nasty, sweat bowl last year. Still, if we win 2 out of these, it will be a good first season for Coach Tommy T.
We probably should be thankful too that TCU was taken off the schedule…

Good.

Yes – we should beat ATM & OSU every year, however my hatred is more towards the obnoxious, it’s their God given right, whiny orangebloods. And speaking of OSU, why the hell couldn’t those idiots in Stillwater agree to play the annual game @ the Death Star here in Arlington? I really have to go see Baylor every year? Oh well…

the reason we play Baylor in the ghetto is

cause we got tired of them coming out here and we sure did not want to go to Waco.

Great job putting this blog together Seth!

Recruiting was somewhat down from last year but similar to what Tech has gotten over the past decade. Leach took these classes and put Tech in the top 25 consistently. Can Tuberville do the same? The goal(plan) for Tuberville is simple…and explains a lot of the reason why Tuberville wanted to be the head coach at Tech..maintain the Air Raid offense that Leach built and provided as a gift and improve the defense which is Tubbs specialty. The key is to keep the offense near the level we are accustom to and coach the qb up—-hear Brown!!

I’ll have y’all in touch with your feminine side in no time!

And my wish for this year is that Sheffield is our starting QB – I may even buy season tickets for the first time and make the trek to Lubbock to see that.

Sticks

I agree with you that Sheffield should start. He seemed to make decisions quicker, as we as being more mobile.
Either way, it is comforting to know that we will have a capable backup that has experience.

2010 prediction

SMU – W – it will be shaky at first, but our O will outscore their O

at New Mexico – W – new D pitches a shutout

TX – L – close, the new D rattles the kid..but they win late on a questionable call by Bible’s crew. Some things never change

at Iowa State – W – see NM

Baylor – W – Great QB comes back…but he’s not quite 100%…and that’s all they have

Okie State – W – close, but we pull it off and Gundy throws another tittie baby fit

at Colorado – W -TTU proves it can win in a snow storm

at Aggie – W – close in jackboot heaven, but aggie will be overconfident…because “it’s just TTU” and we ARE aTm!

Missou – W – everything clicks and it gets REAL ugly

at Okie – W – D scares the hell out of the QB. He wets his pants and jumps in the schooner. OU Regents offer Bradford DOUBLE what he’s making to come back under an assumed name

Weber State – W – see NM

Houston – W – payback

Deja Vu all over again. Raiders share the South title with TU and Okie. Once again, Mack gets out his kneepads and begs to get into the Championship game…because “we are Texas…and we always get our way”

by JBTX68 on Feb 4, 2010 8:51 PM CST reply actions

I think this could be the year we beat both UT and OU and then in past Tech fashion lose to someone like New Mexico and/or Weber State. I’m trying to be positive but I’ve been a Tech fan for a long time…hard to forget the blunders of the past…

by Austin, Tx on Feb 4, 2010 9:05 PM CST up reply actions

Watch out for OU to throw a running qb into the mix

He’s not gonna start any time soon, but they drafted a 6’6 kid that my spies on the inside say will be the Sooner vs of Vince Young, and he’s supposed to have some plays in the book next season.

by raider realist on Feb 4, 2010 9:19 PM CST up reply actions

no doubt!

I’m trying to be positive and pray that those days are behind us.

I agree that it’s possible to beat tu and ou. However, I still think that somehow, someway….Bible or another Austin based official will worm their way in and mess it up! All you have to do is look at cougar high’s “goal line stand” last year…..it’s called forward progress…not, how quick can I blow my whistle so I can be on TV!

We’ve ALL lived through those blunders! As recent as last year… cougar high and aggie…sweet Jesus!!

by jdeeTTU on Feb 4, 2010 11:00 PM CST via mobile reply actions

yes, he does have wheels and he know's how to use them.

And, from what I remember, he promised he would neved do the (one word) Tebow-jump-pass-crap-gawd-I-can’t-stand-that-shit, ever in the history of his football career. That makes me happy.
