Will Texas Tech Football take the next step?
The 2009 football season and 2010 recruiting class have come to a dramatic end. Given the traffic here on DTN and elsewhere, it could be said that Tech fans have never been more engaged in what is going with the program than they are right this moment. Both positive and negative emotions have lead to a level of interest that is clogging message boards, and pushing our stadium to expansion limits. Nose bleed bleacher sections usually covered in bird feces are now brand new luxury boxes. $10,000 used to buy 4 semesters of tuition, now it buys 4 club seats for one season of football.
The Mike Leach era of Tech football is over. His legacy however, lives on in that none of the interest and progress mentioned above occurrs without his involvement. Without coach Leach there is no stadium expansion, there is no "Air Raid" or the top flight offense recruits it attracted. Without Leach there is no Michael Crabtree or Graham Harrell, and no moment in Nov. of 2008 where Tech fans accross the nation are brought to tears over the catch heard round the world. That night, wine drunk, and a Cohiba in hand, I stumbled out on my deck ....laid down on my back, and cried as I listened to what must have been hundreds of horns honking miles from the stadium, all accross Lubbock. Without Mike Leach there is no way a nationally recognized coach like Tommy Tuberville comes to Tech.
Now the debate rages accross Raidernation, "will coach Tuberville and this team make it to the next level"? Will we leave behind the yoke of mid-market also ran, for elite status. More than some of Raidernation are convinced our best chance at that kind of progress is now sipping bourbon-n-cokes in Key West. They are angry, hurt, and many have gone far enough as to refuse to support the team with their attendance, attention, and money. Most of this group of loyal but jaded Raider fans loves the team, will continue to watch, but remain emmensly skeptical.
So will the team answer our call? Will these recruits supplant their mediocre "Rivals Rating" and push the Masked Rider and his steed into BCS stadiums? The answer is NO. Atleast not alone. No, because this type of step is one of such huge proportion that it requires the heavy lifting of not just the team.........but also of it's fans. If any large contingent of it's fans withholds it's support, the entire machine fails. It's a self fullfilling prophecy you see. "We think we are doomed, so we cannot support". But without the support, we are doomed. Don't believe me, let's take a look at our competition:
The following is a list of every program who has won a National Championship since 1998, and how many different coaches they have had in that time:
School Coaching Changes
Tenn 3
LSU 3
FL 3
Ala 4
OK 2
TX 2
USC 3
OhSt 2
FLSt 2
Miami 3
----------------------------
TTU 3
This list represents our competition for elite status. The unicorn that has alluded our program since it's inception. Many of these schools have won mulitple NCs during this decade in spite of these coaching changes. One large common denominator among all of these schools is that through out it all, the fans endured, remained strong, and even grew their base of influence. Their stadiums are huge, many twice our size, with waiting lists for season tickets.
We are Texas Tech, we are Raider Nation. We are bigger than Spyke Dykes, Mike Leach, Tommy Tubberville, and his inevitable replacement. We are hungry. We have never been closer to our dream, but also never more fractured. We have been picked on, disrespected, and ignored not only by the nation, but by our own conference foes for decades. Now we are dangerous. Like the dog raised on a chain, we are done being poked with the stick that is mediocrity. We are ready. This turbulent time should not be allowed to divide us, or define us, but rather be the last straw that leads us to say "I'm angry as hell, and I am not going to take it anymore."
We have a choice. We can rightfully withold our monetary support for this team and protest the corrupt leadership who has surely embarrassed our great alma mater..........or we can support our squad in 2011 with such zeal and fervor that the "stooges" can't expand the stadium fast enough! We can bring about a level of fan support in 2011 the likes of which this school has never seen as we set records for attendance and noise! Let the "3 stooges" not be fired for the Leach debacle, but rather for incompetence due to underestimating capacity requirements at the Jones!
All eyes are on our program at this moment. If you doubt that take note that despite signing a medicore 41st best recruiting class, ESPN insisted on holding an interview with coach Tuberville. When was the last time the national press interviewed a Tech head coach on national signing day? Everyone is watching and waiting, many (especially in Austin & College Station) are looking for us to fail. Are we going to continue to let our support ebb and flow with the tides, or are we going to do what every other elite program has done in the last decade and cowboy up? The countdown has begun, the pieces are in place, the exact outcome is uncertain. But regardless, through our unprecedneted support, 2011 can be THE year of the Red Raider. From this moment forward, may our field never be rushed again. For no victory, regardless of size or implication, is unexpected. Wreck'em Tech.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Double-T Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Double-T Nation's writers or editors.

We don't storm the field because we can't believe we won. We storm the field because it's fun and we're fired up and been drinking a little too much. We believe we can win every game.
And as pumped up as we get over a big win, the opposite is true when we lose a game we should win like A&M. We feel pretty dejected. It would be cool if we could be more like Nebraska fans who applaud the other team after the game if they win in Lincoln.
I think many would argue...
Fans of the under dog storm the field after winning a game they wern’t supposed to. Have you ever seen the pre-game favorite storm the field? Did Oklahoma, a team ranked below us in 2008, storm the field after stomping us at home? But I digress……

Dang, after reading this,
I want to strike up the band for a little Red Raider fan-fare. I’m with you dude, we have as good of a chance right now to move forward as we do to move backward. Looks to me like we have a good group coming back that know how to win important games, hopefully they have learned to stay focused in the lesser games. We have a good class coming in and I think a decent coaching staff to teach and lead.
The fan base, as you point out, is certainly curious at this point and also have been “conditioned” to expect W’s instead of L’s.
I think the only thing you left out of the equation is the “belltower boys”. Yes, that group of knotheads, mental midgets, and all around jerkwads that alledgedly is our administration of our fine university. Get rid of Hance and Myers and I’m with ya.
Oh, I’ll continue to buy tickets and go to games, but I will kiss some very ugly things before I contribute a dime to anything other than the School of Business unless they are fired. Not dismissed or retired, FIRED.

“you know, um, Henry the Eighth had a grandmother,um, coincidentally, um, that loved football, and um, well….actually it was rugby, and true story….um, she in the 17th century she had, um, similar to what we are talking about here…um, she had a boy she who would always stand next to her, and um, she would kick him in the nuts when she, um, you know, when she got frustrated. And I am, you know, um, am pretty frustrated with our 60 minute effort today, and if we played, played rugby like, um well like Henry the Eighth, then we will be just fine.

The problems with the empty looking stadium last year were because we expanded the thing and the “stooges” though we should still ask $95 a ticket for the worst seats in the house. And we only had a few weeks to sell them. And we weren’t ranked. We still had more than capacity before the expansion. In a season where the stadium started out as 52K, we probably averaged 55K for the A&M debacle and OU game. Thats pretty good. To fill the new sections the boneheads in the tower need to lower the dang prices.
What if you could get season tickets in the new sections for $200? The whole thing would be full. What a deal. Revenue would probably end up being more than when we overcharge and don’t fill it up. And atmosphere would be killer. Call me a dreamer but I think if we lowered prices on the new section we could fill that thing up. 60K a game is a big step up from the 35K a game my freshman year in 2001.
Isn't there something going on with the economy or jobs or something, too?
I thought I saw that somewhere…
Another sign of brilliance. Worst economy since the 70’s, let’s charge $95 friggin bucks for a ticket in the end zone!
Our decision makers. We should get them outside more often.

administration family tree looks like a telephone pole
"There's going to be ups and downs but you have to enjoy the battle." Mike Leach
hence, the final part of the equation for "next stepping"
just sayin’
"There's going to be ups and downs but you have to enjoy the battle." Mike Leach
Its called Revenue Management or Pricing Optimization
Our administration sells tickets like its still the 1920s which is evident from things like selling $99 season ticket packages; and charging fans the same price to watch North Dakota State as Oklahoma.
Full capacity is often touted as a goal for sports teams, when in reality they should be going for revenue optimization. That should be the measurement by which they evaluate their success.
Price optimization is prevalent in the hotel and airline industries. The price you pay for a ticket is based on things like current capacity, peak days, lead time before usage and things like that. That’s why when you’re on a plane you end up sitting next to a guy who spent $100 for a seat while you spent $500. Its the same flight, your going to the same place, but the price difference reflects a number of consumer behaviors. All of this get modeled in complex algorithms and software. The models are fairly easy to construct because historical data provides you with insight on consumer behavior. The software for these things is also dynamic and can be fine tuned when there are sudden changes (which for a stadium hosting 6 games a year are probably unlikely).
When you employ this sort of approach you are more likely to fill up your stadium in any case.
These systems preserve the common sense elements of todays pricing approach like charging season ticket holders a certain price based on where they sit. But it also charges another price for a fan who buys a ticket one day before the game. If the game is expected to sell out, that fan will likely pay whatever it takes. If we’re playing Weber State, the price will probably be a lot lower.
Better to sell an empty seat for $1 than to earn nothing at all (I’m not sure that price would be low enough to entice fans to watch a Pat Knight coached team). But when eveyone starts to buy for a dollar, you can increase the price.
By not employing this method, Tech needlessly turns over the potential gains from price optimization models to ticket scalpers who know very well how much a desperate person is willing to buy a ticket for (which is what I did to see Tech-UT 2008 – and which to me was worth every penny). Why aren’t those gains kept by the University? Also, the guy who would be perfectly willing to pay $20 for a game instead winds up staying at home while that same seat goes unused because he wasn’t willing to pay $30.
It costs far far less to employ this software and squeeze out the most revenue from the existing stadium than to mindlessly keep expanding the stadium (I believe there are plans to spend $200 million or more to expand the stadium to 85,000 – why bother?).

I want Fall to be here
How many more months is it to the first football game? TTUMAR can you do us a favor and post this about every two months until the first game of fall. And also on Lubbockonline if you can. This is awesome. We need to fill up Jones and give hell to whoever dares walk in. I can’t wait for us to trample Texas in Jones this 2010.
Great post!
I think these are the general feelings from just about everybody. The spring game couldn’t get here soon enough. Fall will never get here at this point. Sarcasm noted? Great.
We really do need to support our team and our school. Those geriatric viagra popping blowhards in the bell tower can ________. I have no use for them. They have done nothing but made us look bad. They will get theirs. Karma is a bitch and she’s always busy.
I’m all for supporting the team. Heavy lifting required or not. We need to be there screaming and yelling, tearing the place down with excitement. I personally take the TCU beatdown as my own baby. I was in the student section clearing the place out acting borderline crazy. The group of friends I was with where acting the same way. The players caught on after half time. Everybody in the endzone saw us. Then, we beat the pants off TCU.
Get excited ladies. This is your team and your house. The administration has nothing to do with YOUR football team. That team belongs to the students, alumni, and the fans. Go to the Jones, scream your face off, scare the elderly, make babies cry, scare the opposing team and their fans, cheer for the Goin Band, and have a good time.
Thanks for the pep talk TTUMAR, God knows we need it.

TTUMAR, I wholeheartedly agree with you and have been preaching these words ever since overcoming the 7 stages of grief. We have to unite in the face of what has taken place and prove once and for all we will NEVER return to mediocrity or waning support… RAIDER NATION is here to stay!!! The worst thing we can do is turn our backs on our program now, every one of our foes would love to see that transpire.
Programs carry their coaching legends along with them forever and the same will be true for Mike Leach…May the pirate NEVER die at Tech!!!
Agreed....
We need more posts like this around here. I’m one of those souls turning the corner in my grief from Leach but it’s time to say fuck it and get back in line. Wreck ‘em! Has a couple of things to say. One, I don’t knock anyone wanting to storm the field after a big victory. I probably would not do that, but I think it only adds to the excitement. Two, If I did live in Lubbock and not the cesspool of the whole state, Austin, I would attend every game if anyway possible. Three, Despite the despicable acts committed by our administration, Texas Tech football will survive, even prosper, as long as the team stays focused and the fans stay loyal. Four, With the schedule Tech has this year, a BCS game could be in Tech’s future…this year…and several years afterward. Five, I will not allow Tuberville to accept credit for the hard work and recruiting done by Mike Leach and his staff, nor allow him to continue to insinuate the previous group of coaches were below average. No one anywhere will dispute the national attraction Tech now is resulted because of the efforts and unique offenses the previous head coach—AKA, Mike Leach—put out on the field. Texas Tech N-E-V-E-R had that kind of exposure—EVER! I have always been passionate about the Red Raiders, especially while dealing with the burnt orange puddle of fans here in Austin. BUT, I am even more passionate now because of where Mike Leach took the Red Raiders ans how he did it accomplish. I am hopeful the new coaches, egos and all, will be able to keep the mystique surrounding the program in the national spotlight for all the right reasons and bringus that elusive national championship.
