Games won in 2010

The poll in DTN asked bloggers to vote on how many games do you think tech will win next year, so far there are 400 votes.

4% or 16 votes said undefeated…keep dreaming,

38% or 153 votes were 10-11 wins (which was my vote),

42% or 168 votes said 8-9 wins,

11% or 47 votes said 6-7 wins

3% or 15 votes are 5 wins or less.

My opinion

Sept. 4 SMU - WIN

Sept. 11 at New Mexico - WIN

Sept. 18 Texas* - WIN

Oct. 2 at Iowa State* - WIN

Oct. 9 vs. Baylor (at Cotton Bowl, Dallas)* - WIN

Oct. 16 Oklahoma State*- WIN

Oct. 23 at Colorado* - WIN

Oct. 30 at Texas A&M* - TOSS UP

Nov. 6 Missouri* - WIN

Nov. 13 at Oklahoma* - PROBABLY LOSE

Nov. 20 Weber State - WIN

Nov. 27 Houston - WIN

I would love for people to justify there votes, especially the ones that voted for either 6-7 wins or 5 wins or less!

Star-divide

Who was it that argued with me a couple of months ago about defensive fronts and which base defense we should have; he argued that we should have a 5-2 or a 6-2??? anyone remember?

Things that are also a bitch.....in no particular order.

Rosie O’Donnel, Speeding Tickets, Hangovers, Taking down Christmas Lights, turbulence, flat tires, dead battery in the truck or bike, suspect UT fans, fans that aren’t fans of TTU ( also, suspect), Unruly office chairs, running out of beer, Tim Griffin’s Big 12 Blog, Blatant Homerism with a false sense of reality, working nights for 2 weeks straight, laundry, doing the dishes, taking out the trash, falling down a flight of stairs in front of everybody, drowning, catching on fire, peeing your pants (TTUMAR), chitting your pants ( oldschoolraider), walking into the wrong bar and not realizing until it’s too late, clowns, carnies, running out of beer ( I think that’s worth mentioning twice)……..

This list could go on forever.

On most of your list. But I’ve never fallen down stairs, drowned, caught on fire, had the pants problems (don’t even want to know), or got a ticket for 20+ years (funny, but that’s about the same time I got a badge). And I’ve definitely never had my ass whipped by a chair.

I say Oklahoma and Colorado or Missouri. Not sure why these 2 north teams seem to get the best of us but maybe with Tuberville we can even find a way to win in Norman.

Funny

I don’t know why, but some of these responses made me laugh out loud. We haven’t even played the Super Bowl yet and there are college football 2010 predictions out. That is priceless! And I’m sure that Texas, Baylor, A&M and Oklahoma are quaking in their boots already. By the way, why in the world would anybody have to justify their predictions to you? Are you the prediction police? Goodness, its a long time til August enjoy Valentines day, mothers day, baseball season, the final four, summer, the Masters and the U.S. Open and maybe your family. Anyway, I enjoy your enthusiasm.

I have the same picks you do. Except I also think UT might be our toss-up game and not A&M. I justify that as the first big game for our new defense and Texas is worse, but they’re not dropping off the map completely.

With Respect to Past History

Missouri and Colorado are toss ups at best until we can consistently prove we can beat them. I can’t remember the last time we beat CU at Boulder and before I get crucified for being the DTN Doubting Thomas, just remember how pathetic CU was when the Buffs came to the Jones in 07 and issued a whippinng to Graham/Crabs & Company. It just seems this team and Mizzou have had our number.

I vote 7-5

My opinion

Sept. 4 SMU – WIN

Sept. 11 at New Mexico – WIN

Sept. 18 Texas* – Loss…depending on how the offense looks in games 1 & 2

Oct. 2 at Iowa State* – WIN

Oct. 9 vs. Baylor (at Cotton Bowl, Dallas)* – WIN

Oct. 16 Oklahoma State*- WIN

Oct. 23 at Colorado* – WIN

Oct. 30 at Texas A&M* – Loss…at A&M has been close, no Leach magic in 2nd half

Nov. 6 Missouri* – iffy

Nov. 13 at Oklahoma* – Big LOSE

Nov. 20 Weber State – WIN

Nov. 27 Houston – Iffy, depending on how the season has been to this point

A lot will be more clear after watching the first 2 games, and then seeing how we handle TX, who I believe will win the Big XII championship again, but with a couple losses!

by johnlaf13 on Feb 6, 2010 11:43 PM CST reply actions

Gotta go with big win season!

I agree mostly with your post, but just a few subtle changes…

We take the pain to TAMU in College Station this year
Mizzou will be tough to beat just because they tend to call our number, unexpectedly
OU would be a toss up, but I just don’t see them significantly better than ’09

I actually see ourselves becoming a better TEAM this year. For every game, everyone will be playing with all 8 cylinders cranking!

We were voted the most difficult stadium to play in by the players after 2008. Obviously a good football team has a lot to do with that, but I’m just sayin….

by logan5555 on Feb 7, 2010 3:35 PM CST up reply actions

My opinion I voted for 10 -11 wins

But there is a pretty solid reasoning behind my votes first going in being at the Jones is a plus 10 points for the Raiders. It’s easier on the team and support staff, the crowd noise is oppressive and the players have a little extra juice(emotion) playing in front of the home folks.
Sept. 4 SMU – WIN – raiders win this one because the Pony’s spread isn’t able to run the ball not 25 % of the time not at all. June Jones is a great coach but they aren’t going to outscore the Raider Senior and upper classmen heavy line up.
Sept. 11 at New Mexico – WIN – this could be trap game but again the Coach Locksley (sp ?) attack isn’t proficient enough to hold back the Raiders defensive assault. The Raider run game on the other hand is potent enough to force the issue. Matt Williams may have to win this one but I am betting not.
Sept. 18 Texas* – WIN – Just like this past year this monster emotional game for the Raiders. The UT offense has several good and serviceable backs but the O line is mostly under classmen and it’s not Colt under center. Gilbert (sp?) is a very fine QB but he’s going to need to play perfect in the Jones . We have better DBs or in my mind more experienced DB’s than they have wide outs. I’m not predicting anything like a blow out but it wouldn’t surprise me to see a very similar result to what happened to OU in the Jones in 2009. Coach Brown has a great stable but in game three our senior QB’s are better than anything he can put on the field offensively. It’s a push as to who has the better O line too. Our guys get the tilt just because – despite a New OC in raider land – they are more practiced at what they are going to do.
Oct. 2 at Iowa State* – WIN I agree enough said.
Oct. 9 vs. Baylor (at Cotton Bowl, Dallas)* – WIN – history and Art Briles blood pressure lead me to believe this is going to b very tough game. They have hung with Tech right down to the final offensive series 2 years in row. Briles knows how to defeat Leachs offense. Ah but this isn’t Leach’s o anymore – well yes and no. It’s a spread attack. With very heavy dose of blast blocking rushing over key stretches. That’s what will sink the bears we are going to win the TOP game. Robert griffin will be great but he can’t carry them. (just like Colt McCoy ) all the way. My thought is a tough match up with a knife in the chest drive in the 4th period. Again.
Oct. 16 Oklahoma State*- WIN – We are going to hate having Dan Holgerson teamed with M. Gundy. New Cowboys QB – but that guy Weed (sp) – the old baseball player looked really good against Colorado in 09 (queasy stomach ouch). OSU still has a new o line new linebacker corps and a New secondary. If the Raiders don’t turn it over in the Jones the raiders will win handily. The real chess match here is Coach Young versus Coach Willis both d coordinators have to get a great pass rush going. That being said I don’t see the Cowboys running it down the Raiders throats I give the Raider d linemen the tilt here .
Oct. 23 at Colorado* – WIN or bad loss – I am on record saying I cant tell what Coach Hawkins does here. These guys always seem to be able to run right at us and a couple years ago they beat up OU at home and kicked 3 x FG’s to beat them . They are really tough at home for Tech, aTm and Baylor. Is it a Texas plains versus high altitude thing? I think after beating OSU we may have a tough time being up for the Buffs. This one is very worrisome. It’s a trap game and the best potential for a bad loss of 2010. IMO.
Oct. 30 at Texas A&M* – TOSS UP (I agree) – this isn’t a hard one to predict, the Aggies are itching for home victory. The Raiders will have their hand full @ Kyle Field. 2 things are a must bottle up Jerrod Johnson and stuff up the new found aggie run game. They have new def coordinator the guy from the AF Academy. He may be able to ramp up what Joe Kines did. If Sticks is on then he and Torres, Lewis and Zou might set a couple of records.
Nov. 6 Missouri* – WIN – smarter folks than me say our Raiders just can’t avoid finding away to give these guys 4 – turnovers – every time we meet. But Coach Neal is more balanced run attack guy. So my scenario is like the Baylor game we creep up to 45 % run plays and their sophomore QB just can’t out throw the Tech secondary. Actually they can right up the red zone but the shortened field defense keeps making them kick FG’s. Tech wins.
Nov. 13 at Oklahoma* – PROBABLY LOSE – OU QB Landry Jones will be better. Stoops reloads the Sooner O line and its going to take the best game of the year to win in Norman. I need more time to try and breakout a plausible scenario which has the Raiders winning in the heart of Oklahoma. This might be the one game where like Nebraska we need a back breaker play from the Raider Defense to get on top. This game might in fact be shaping up to look lot like an SEC game its very well be 6 -3 @ the end of the 3rd period. Go figure.
Nov. 20 Weber State – WIN – This looks like a tune up and it might give all the 2nd and 3rd string folks 10 or 15 reps each. This is the only blow out I can stomach. I am not good at jinxing the Raiders and predicating huge numbers. Just not.
Nov. 27 Houston – WIN – If Case Keenum is till healthy then this is a brawl. They wil be ranked so will we. They need it to get to the MAC championship? We need it to stay relevant for the Holiday or Fiesta bowl..
Yep it’s a 10 win season and buy your Bowl tickets.

Okay, to unhijack this thread, I am gonna go for a more probable 9 win season, including our bowl game. Not saying we win 8 and then the bowl, for the record. Just nine total wins.

It’s going to be a challenge, as it almost always is with a new coach, to get the team all on the same page in one off season. There will be a few small bumps along the way in ’10. We have decent talent, but not many on defense who are awesome. That will matter.

But I’m still really excited to see us attack and be aggressive on defense. As we all know that also means we may have live with giving up a big play now and again. But I’d rather give up a big play attacking than give one up being vanilla.

Either way, I look forward to this new chapter in Tech football history.

by Tech92 on Feb 7, 2010 2:40 PM CST via mobile reply actions

So we've seen one 7-5 if I'm looking at this post correctly.

But even that was 7-3-2 (Win/Loss/Iffy), which is still putting us down for a possible 9 win season.

I’m curious to read the opinions of the 15 people who think we fall off the map and have a < 6 win season for the first time since 1992.

its probably beergut and company coming over to give their two cents. Just speculating, though.

by pcrawttu on Feb 7, 2010 8:43 PM CST up reply actions

10 to 11 wins

I am still upset with the way the last month or so has played out. However, I have moved on to the new regime and expect just as much from them as we got from the last regime. Maybe more. With an anticipated uptick of the defense and a continuation of high octane offensive output, the Raiders should provide us with the same excitement and results we have had as of late. We will probably have a loss against a ranked team, but maybe a loss against an unranked team (no predictions as to which team-just about anyone is capable). As for those expecting Tech to struggle, I have a very good feeling you will not see that happening for many years to come. Texas Tech has reached a plateau they are temporarily content with, but they want more. This could be another like 2008. However, whomever Tech plays in a bowl game (I predict a BCS bowl game) the Raiders will win. More success will follow. Believe!

by TTpilk645 on Feb 7, 2010 11:52 PM CST reply actions

I still think this 2010 team will be better than the 2009 team. A more solid QB provided SS is the guy and a much better running attack. Also, I can see Eric Ward as a huge contributor on the receiving team. Defensively I can see some early starts by players who may have redshirted under Leach’s watch. Tre Porter will probably be an immediate. The LB position will be focusing on better techniques in a new defensive package. DE has me concerned but I’m hoping Scott Smith makes his way into the rotation. If these guys play up to their potential we could be going into Norman undefeated. Lastly, I like having an offensive coordinator.

My opinion – - – - there will be growing pains…. lets be realistic…. you cant overhaul the defense and expect consistency in the first year…. I do think our defense will eventually be better than ruffin’s… just not in the first year…. Ruffin wasnt a scheming coach… He was an emotional coach…. I predict 8-4 or 9-3(depending on MZZOU) and tied with OKSTATE for 5th place in the Big 12. We have the head to head tiebreaker. If we beat MIZZOU we take 4th outright!!!
1. OU
2. Texas
3. Nebraska
4. Missouri
5. TTU

Sept. 4 SMU – WIN – closer than you think with a new defensive scheme and SMU being full of returning starters!!
35-21

Sept. 11 at New Mexico – WIN
41-17

Sept. 18 Texas* – WIN – being hopefull garrett gilbert plays scared!!
31-27

Oct. 2 at Iowa State* – WIN – afer bye week and avoiding hangover from texas game
35-21

Oct. 9 vs. Baylor (at Cotton Bowl, Dallas)* – WIN – close one if RG is healthy!!!
24-20

Oct. 16 Oklahoma State*- WIN – we get revenge and win @ home like usual
38-24

Oct. 23 at Colorado* – Loss – Until we can prove we can beat them…. I have witnessed both losses in Boulder and they were emabrrassing…. needless to say I wont be attending this game!!! CU and MIZZOU have our number for some reason!!!
31-21

Oct. 30 at Texas A&M* – Loss – Just because – we gave them confidence last year that will carry over to this year…. their only real loss is von miller….
38-34

Nov. 6 Missouri* – TOSS UP – We are at home… they didnt lose anyone from last years team… and I will have to say loss until I am proven wrong…. Just being realistic…. Hopefully tubs can get them up for this game!!! CU and MIZZOU have our number for some reason
27-21

Nov. 13 at Oklahoma* – Loss – late in the year at their place…. porbably closer than last time…
38-24

Nov. 20 Weber State – WIN – No comment
59-14

Nov. 27 Houston – WIN – I give us the edge because it is in lubbock….. they get keenum back….. lots of scoring….
45-31

by Guns~up! on Feb 8, 2010 4:53 PM CST reply actions

I think being realistic is dead on...

however, I think if we beat Texas what they says about our talent, and the momentum that would create will see us sailing through this weak schedule until we go to Norman. If we lose to UT, a few more losses are likely. If we win against UT, what we thought about our 2010 chances were true, Tubs was able to grab the baton cleanly, and we roll into Norman 9-0,………then all bets are off. I say 10-2. We loose to OK in Norman, the team gets low just like in 2008, and we trip up again against Houston.

I'll agree

Winning against UT at such an early stage in the season will reap huge rewards.

And losing…well…

This goes right along with my thoughts on being able to see the many possible outcomes for this team as we head into next season. So many factors to consider.

When do single game tickets go on sale? I know season tickets are already on sale but what about single game?

by TTU '04 on Feb 9, 2010 9:23 AM CST reply actions

Keep checking in with TexasTech.com

Last year they announced dates that tickets for certain games (or groups of games) would go on sale, although at least once they opened up sales earlier than scheduled. Usually it was somewhere around 4-8 weeks before the games.

For more info, I’d go to the site and click on Tickets/Football from the left hand menu. That ought to give you a box for asking your question on-line in a live chat with the ticket office.

I just have this gut feeling

that the Big XII is going to suffer again like it did this last year. I think the play has leveled out for at least the 2010 season as OU and UT are having to rebuild their offenses (even though both QB’s got playing time…I’m still not impressed with Jones at OU.)

This feels like the 2008 season where we have an open window to fly out of, but the question is if we will make the best of the opportunity. I think Coach Tubs will have a great handle on the games and that our rivals will be surprised what the “new” TTU looks like on the field.

Like what’s been said before, a lot of this will clear up at the Spring Game and in the first two preseason match ups.

Speaking to the schedule, I DO NOT like having non-conference games to close out the season. Say what you will, but it looks like the banana peel in the road waiting for us to slip up. And we all know the implications a “slip” non-conference or other will have on the BCS rankings. I just don’t want to have a blowout season and then get creamed by a Weber State in an upset.

Overall though, I defend the 9-10 win season this year.

That's not true at all

Bowls are not required to take any specific team from a particular conference – bowls simply have the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc pick of teams from a conference. Being second, third, or fourth in the conference doesn’t entitle a team to a specific bowl.

yes that is true

however, 99% of the time they pick in order

I also don't like having non-conference games to close out the season.

It leaves us out of control of our own destiny late in the season. If we’re in a fight with UT or OU for the South we won’t be able to do anything about it for two weeks.. we’ll just have to hope our challenger loses.

+1

And we’ll get zero buzz for beating Weber St, and not much more for C-USA UH.

Unless UH makes a case next year and has a high status in the polls.

Then it wouldn’t be so bad. Trying to be optomistic. Weber St. isn’t going to help us at all, unless they are providing free BBQ grills at the game, from Weber…….. Ahha.

I don't know how I feel about it yet....

But it seems to work for the SEC in BCS ranking, they all do it. If your going to lose, you don’t want to do it late. Compare that with the first version Tech put out of the schedule that had our last two games of the season as Texas at home, then away at Oklahoma. That would have most likely been a disaster.

Yeah but,

lest we forget, it’s the SEC. ESPN and the BCS are so far up their butts they smell like Craig James. I know they are good….but still winning against Weber and UH at the end of the season does nothing for us. It’s a “we have everything to lose, and nothing to gain” situation.

Unless,

we show stong early, sweep and have a good game against UH…then that gives us the Weber state game to play as an NFL preseason…ie. play 1st string 2 drives and then get next years starters some reps…if we’re in for the B12 championship game than Weber could give us some healing time and a good shot at B12 championship and MNC! OVERLY optimistic at this point I know but….
