Double-T Nation Post Season Awards :: Need Defensive MVP Nominees

I wanted to open up the comments to you guys and gals before putting out the poll as to who you want to see as candidates for the DTN PSA Defensive MVP.

On my short list is LB Brian Duncan, CB Jamar Wall, DE Brandon Sharpe, DT Colby Whitlock, S Cody Davis and LB Marlon Williams. If I've forgotten someone, please let me know and add their name to the comment list (DE Daniel Howard, S Franklin Mitchem, etc.).

What I'd like to see everyone do nominate a player, and if people agree with that nomination, then "rec" that comment.  The player comment with the most "rec'd"comments will be added to the poll tomorrow for the official voting.

REC'd

Brandon created a bunch of good things as the season progressed and was easily the most feared of Tech defensive players. Wall would bea close second.

Hard choice

Marlon Williams and we will miss Sharpe and Wall next year

Colby Whitlock

Not the guy with the most stats and video, but the guy who has anchored a DL that impresses. Whitlock’s play inside frees the DE’s to do their stuff as speed rush DE’s.

The DL is the key to the defensive side of the game.

+1 for Whitlock

I would have trouble voting for any Tech corner in spite of a few good hits.

I just have trouble voting for Wall based on the fact that hw’s not that good.

Whitlock

Not as easy to notice as Sharpe, but he drew double teams all year to open the way for the rest (incl Sharpe)

Davis

I know his stats arent exactly what you look for when it comes to the safety position but the intangibles are worth my vote. After losing McBath and Charbonnet I was expecting a big drop off but when a freshman can come in and play like he did he has to be bound for greatness.

I will rec the Sharpe comment

But I don’t know what we’d have done without Howard.

Sharpe

Sharpe was a game changer. Defenses had to account for this guy and there were a couple of games where he flat out took over. It’s a shame he didn’t show up sooner!

Honorable mentions to Wall due to his ability to affect outcomes with his hitting (KU game/balance of OSU’s season!) and Duncan, for his steady play in the middle (just wish he was better at running down dual-threat QBs).

Daniel Howard because Sharp would have been double teamed every play without him on the field

BTW he didn’t get suspended for one snap and put the Nebraska game out of reach.

While we're at it, you guys and gals want to give some

nominations for the offensive MVP? Same methodology, just throw out a name and we’ll go from there. Short list: QB Steven Sheffield, RB Baron Batch, WR Detron Lewis, WR Alexander Torres, RT Brandon Carter and LT Lonnie Edwards.

I really loved Torres

But I had to rec Batch above. Torres stepped in great with the loss of MC and Elf. But if you look at all the things BB can do that the other backs just can’t (yet, or ever) especially chipping a DL and always being there for the 5th option dump off, finishing off runs hard, breaking 50 yard plays frequently. I just love him and he’s such a good kid.

Batch had a breakout season, and think the best has yet to come...

That said….I think the MVP should be a player that i could point to as THE reason we won in critical situations. Without Sticks Sheffield, we don’t win in Nebraska, and maybe not at home against New Mexico. Taking nothing away from Batch and the others, without Sticks we don’t go to a bowl in 2009. Sticks get my offensive MVP.

Again, I go to the LOS

There is a temptation on this offense to think in terms of most valuable position…clearly qb. But with the success of the team over all and three qb’s in play, that gets too complicated and doesn’t make sense overall.

The guy who came in and made a difference is Chris Olsen…his flexibility allowed a lot of in season experimentation and his spot on the OL allowed the left side to settle and stablize.

Torres was the most consistent offensive player. But without the running, catching and blocking of Batch, we would have been VERY one-dimensional. Close second for Batch and this year he may take over the offense as a back has not been able to do since Williams.

Sharpe and Torres

Close, for me at least, between Sharpe and Howard (he didn’t have alot of numbers but things would have been different without him) and Torres was just about the only receiver with any kind of consistency.

Batch was inconsistent (not always his fault) and Sheffield didn’t get enough snaps to be O-MVP.

Batch

The only player that was consistent all year long. Baron Batch MVP hands down

by zcole04 on Feb 8, 2010 1:50 PM CST reply actions   1 recs

Batch...consistent?

Not knocking him, I’m only stating facts.

In 6 (slightly less than half) of the games, he put up less than 50 yards. Also, his YPC fluctuated drastically over the season from 3 to almost 10. Yes, he ran hard everytime he got a touch and I don’t believe his problems have to do with him (same goes for Sticks). I think he’s a hell of a player and next year will show that. However, in my mind, he was not consistent enough to get O-MVP.

by TheScarletandTheBlack on Feb 8, 2010 2:25 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Hard to run

When you’re not getting the blocking or the touches. But he was always consistent at running hard, blocking for the QB, and as a receiver. All year long we were complaining about him not getting enough touches. Kinda hard now to say it was his fault he didn’t make enough yards.

Again

I’m not saying he’s not a good player. I actually believe he’s the most under-utilized player on the team, BUT he just doesn’t have the numbers (for the reasons already stated) to be the O-MVP in my opinion.

Next year when Brown gets him 20-25 touches a game on the ground and 7-10 in the air (what he should have been getting all along) then without a doubt he’ll be the MVP.

by TheScarletandTheBlack on Feb 8, 2010 4:17 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Batch...consistent?

When they gave him the ball, he produced. He averaged 5.68 yards every time he touched the ball. When Tech put the ball in his hands, they moved the chains and were successful, e.g. Houston (although Tech lost—not Batch’s fault), KU, OU, and Michigan State. Even his line against Nebraska looks impressive. He had a clutch score in that game and some key runs on a key drive.

That’s the real answer with regard to Batch. Even in games with ugly stat lines, he made key plays at key times. The definition of “clutch”. Sticks is the other guy with this aptitude—he just didn’t get face time in enough games to get my vote.

by Oklahoma Red Raider on Feb 8, 2010 3:53 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

My problem is having games at 3 YPC then having games close to 10 YPC. Granted most of this was probably due to line/QB issues, but I would still like to have seen him stay at or above 4.5 all year.

Sticks for OMVP

He gave me hope when a season on the edge could have quickly gone in the toilet. The Nebraska game was all about him and sold me.

Sheffield is interesting, his case.

He did all that was asked of him each time he played…

He started the season as back-up and ended the season as back-up…

He could be the first back-up qb to get a team MVP award.

Once he played

He wasn’t really the backup….

I saw that he did not start early and did not start late.

I thought it was funny…that a back up could be MVP.

And the Alamo Bowl crowd booed him as they handed him his MVP trophy

That may have been a first in the history of bowl games. The crowd was understandably grumpy about other things before the game ever started. I was surprised Sitx didn’t get the MVP. Who selects it anyway? Bob Davie?

Please stop ending every controversial comment with 'Just saying'. Drives me batty. Thank you.

Defense: Sharp; Offense: Sheffield

Let's see here.......

Defensive MVP would have to go to Sharpe / Howard. I honestly can’t single one of those guys out to win the award.

Offensive MVP – Batch, Sheffield, or Torres.

Was that decisive enough?

D-MVP-Colby Whitlock and O-MVP-Brandon Carter

Who was on the field when the games were won? Who was difficult if not impossible to replace when they were out?
Without Whitlock, Tech’s defense was knifed through by opposing teams’ running game. He was consistently double teamed by every Tech opponent.
Although Potts, Sheffield, and Batch had games when they “shined”, the constant on-the-field force when “wins” occurred was Carter. His graduation leaves the biggest shoes to replace on offense; and, I think we all learned as fans this year that replacing offensive linemen isn’t as easy as we would like to believe it should be (ask our battered QBs).

Daniel Howard

Yall can pick who you want, but Daniel Howard is my pick, he was forced to play virtually every snap, due to lack of personell. He was relentless and had more sacks then given credit for (11.5). The other teams consistantly ran away from his side because he was disciplined, stayed at home and did his job. B Sharpe should thank his lucky stars Daniel played the rush side, because they don’t make movies(The Blindside) about the strong side O tackle, so he had to take on the All-Americans every snap. He showed up for every practice(dressed accordingly Adam James) and was at every workout. He didn’t complain, whine about playing time, or ever lay down on his team. Led the defense in forced fumbles, fumbles returned for TD’s, blocked field goals, and led the D-line in solo tackles. He suited up for every game. DNP only one game(K-State rout). But most of all he HUSTLED and nobody can say they ever out worked him, Game or Practice. But the real reason he is my Defensive MVP is because He’s my son, so maybe I am a litlle biased, but wouldn’t you be? They are all MVP’s in my book.

by dbled53 on Feb 10, 2010 3:21 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

That's why...

I was split between Howard and Sharpe. You can argue that neither of them would have been the same without the other.

In the end, Sharpe did what he did in less snaps so I chose him.

by TheScarletandTheBlack on Feb 10, 2010 5:29 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Good Choice

You see why I am a little biased, Yep he had more snaps, and stayed on the field,w/o taking a rest break while going against their best tackle, and then play the stand up Joker LB when the scheme required that Defense. But you see I am a little biased, so if you notice I refer to him as my MVP, he always has been, and always will be my MVP.They are all MVP’s in my book.

I still think the only reason that Sharpe was able to produce

is because your son was wrecking shop on the other side.

Congrats Duane, your son did an outstanding job for his school. I’m sure he has an uber proud father.

KWash, I am proud, but I am just as proud of the Team. Take away a few misnomers and their in Dble digits in the win column. A lot better than most of our special guests anticipated, so w/ that said " They are all MVP’s"
