What the heck is up with this?

I like to window shop online, and I like coming to Seth's place just to hang out and read what you guys post.

Star-divide

Here is the thing, I have been shopping some new camera gear at B&H. We are talking a serious investment so I have accelerated paying down the small amount of debt that I have before making this purchase.

Now all of sudden ever time I come to Double T Nation ever item I have looked at is flashed before my eyes in a B&H banner ad across the top of the page, or in that box on the right side of the page. I am all for free enterprise and SBnation paying it bills, but come on this is sadistic. Here I am trying to be a good steward of the family finances and Seth is whispering in my ear like the Devil to Faust. I am starting to think that Seth is really a Goldman Sachs Executive out to get us all into hock.

Seriously how does this work? How can they get that personal in the Ads? It really is amazing.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Double-T Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Double-T Nation's writers or editors.

Love B&H !!

BMAX, I noticed the same thing when I was shopping for some artwork for my wife. Art websites popped up everywhere, strange.

I buy all my Nikon photo gear from B&H and have to hide the bills from the wife. When she catches me with the new toys my defense is " you bought a new horse, I bought a new body or lens!!" What type of gear are you looking at?

I am a Canon guy, but........

Right now I a considering a brace of Eos 5D Mark II with a group of L lens to cover from 17mm to 200mm. I like the full frame frame sensor, big bright view finder, plus the fact that I have been looking at the world that way for years.

My other choice is an Olympus system. They have some incredible glass (70-200 F2. equivalent!!)
The trade off is the 4/3 sensor, mainly in exposure latitude and high ISO. I can live with the ISO issue but not so much the narrow latitude.

I have faced this issue before years ago but at that time is was the compact size and incredibly bright viewfinder of the OM-1 system verses the robust build and lenses of the Canon F-1 system. I went Canon, as I most likely will this time unless Olympus really improves that sensor. The differance between 4/3s and APS-C sensors is not that great but when you jump to a full 35mm sensor It really makes an impact.

But OLY really does make some fine glass…….

Oh how I long for the 5D MarkII

I got a hold of a review unit right before they came out.

It’s not something I NEED…it’s something I CRAVE.

If you’re already shooting Canon don’t you already have some Canon glass or are you wanting to upgrade your glass as well?

by Damien Franco on Mar 12, 2010 12:55 AM CST up reply actions

Yes I have Canon Lens

but I am planning to up grade. The 5D will make that necessary to get the most out of it.
To be honest I do not need high speed glass, other than a portrait lens, so that big sensor will be what gets my money.

Understand.

Best portrait lens IMO for a full frame sensor on Canon is Canon EF 85mm f1.2L II USM Lens if you’ve got the coin.

I’m a huge fan of the 85 prime for portraits.

by Damien Franco on Mar 12, 2010 6:01 PM CST up reply actions

I am with you on the 85

I have a FL 85 f1.8 that I bought at a Good Will store. 10$
A FD 85 f1.2 ssc that I got with an AE-1 attached at a Pawn Shop. 25$
A FD 85 f1.8 that I purchased new. 325$
They each have their own look.
Too bad none of these will work on a Digital Camera.
The EF 85 f1.2 is on my list.

85 vs 135

I assume y’all are talking about the 85 on the APS-sized sensors? 135mm was always the classic portrait lens on 35mm film cameras. While the mag. factor makes the 85 about the same as the 135 enlargement-wise, isn’t the perspective different than the 135?

My 85 is a tilt-shift macro Nikkor. Really fun to play with, but it doesn’t get much use.

by TechFirst on Mar 13, 2010 5:09 AM CST up reply actions

Actually...

I was referring to the 85 on a full frame and prefer a 50 on an APS-Sized sensor.

To get “technically” perfect perspective you have to take the diagonal measure of the film or sensor your camera uses and multiply it by two.

Without going into too much detail a medium format 8×10 “normal lens” would be 160mm which is why they make the 150mm lens for those cameras.

35mm film or full frame DSLRs would require a 105mm lens which is why they make the 100mm lenses.

There isn’t really a lens for APS sized cameras that fits that category. It would require a 60mm lens or something close to that.

I like to be a little closer when doing portraits so I can interact with the person so I’ve always opted for the 85mm on full frame/35mm or a 50mm on APS sized cameras. That’s my personal preference.

Yes, BTW, ads are getting THAT personal and refined.

About your gear:

While I am a fan of B&H I always price compare with Amazon before a purchase. Often times you’ll find that the gear is listed at the same price and you’ll end up getting free shipping from Amazon if you don’t mind waiting a few extra days.

Sometimes you’ll find that Amazon has cheaper prices to begin with and the free shipping is an added bonus.

90% of my photographic purchases come via Amazon not B&H but I always check both places.

by Damien Franco on Mar 11, 2010 1:36 AM CST reply actions

I've spent a small fortune on Nikon gear at B&H

Just not lately. A combination of age getting to my eyesight and frustration over the hours spent in Photoshop has dampened my photo passions in recent years (although hours spent in the darkroom weren’t much fun either).

MFAB 91 and bmaxw, what kind of gear are you using?

F100, D2H & D2Xs and numerous SB speed lights and lenses. Can they just make a programable body that you can download new software and upgrade the system so I don’t have to lose sleep over the latest & greatest processor, light sensitivity and MP count? Ofcourse not, how else could they get $3-5K out of you every couple of years. My cell phone has the same MP count as that D2H, amazing how fast the technology improves!!!

F5, F6, D1X, D1H, D2X, D2H

And more lights and gizmos than I can remember. Lenses from 20mm to 800mm. And a refrigerator half full of film.

I went for years trying to keep up with the latest and greatest, but finally gave up a few years ago. What’s really a pisser is that some of those digital bodies I paid $3-5K for are worth about $500 today. The first few years of digital would have been a good time to stick with film. At least the glass holds its value pretty well, although adding VR has cut the price in half on my 300 and 600 2.8 AF-S.

I will say that new body that shoots HD video with the SLR lenses has got my attention, but I’ll have to wait till they move up to 1080. I figure that’s coming since the price on this body has dropped considerably.

$$$$$$$$

TF, that is some serious money lying around. Are you a free lance PRO or former photo journalist? I say former since there are not many newspapers left.

I am not sure where I stand on the HD video abilities of a DSLR. I have a hard enough time with editing my still images and trying not getting to creative in post production. Now I have to worry about video and adding terrabytes of memory just to store it.

If I buy a D3S then the price will drop the next day, because that is when the D4 will hit the market. LOL I have to stop chasing technology and just wait till my current bodies go kaput.

by MFAB91 on Mar 11, 2010 2:58 PM CST up reply actions

Realistically you don't have to worry about editing video.

Here’s the deal with the video in DSLRs:

It’s a feature!

You don’t have to use it. I don’t. I concentrate on the still images because I wanted to be a photographer not a videographer.

That said…there are many photographers doing some really cool things with the video capabitlies in the newest gear. Guys like Vincent Laforet and Chase Jarvis are tearing it up in that arena.

If you’re using Lightroom for your editing Lightroom 3 has video editing now which is pretty awesome.

by Damien Franco on Mar 11, 2010 6:03 PM CST up reply actions

Editing is an issue for me, too

One thing that kinda burned me out a few years ago was all the time sitting at the computer. And I was only scratching the surface of Photoshop, more touch-up and sharpening than real alterations.

MFAB91, being a sports stringer for local newspapers was the closest I ever got to being a pro. Just a serious hobbyist (you know what they say about a fool and his money). I was more into nature photography and the competition is too fierce to try to make a living at that. I won a few contests and had a few pics published in magazines, but all of that together wouldn’t buy a good piece of glass.

What I’d really like to do is shoot some Tech games from the sidelines.

Nice.

I always ALWAYS suggest using either Lightroom or Elements for editing.

I get 97% of all my editing done in either of those programs without having to open up Photoshop anymore. Faster, cheaper, organizes your photographs (both of them do this BTW).

Here’s an aritcle I wrote on my photography tutorials website where a reader asked a question on which photo editing software to get for her husband at Christmas.

Thanks, Canon Man

I’ll read that. I’ve heard many times that Elements will do almost everything I use PS for.

I’m having the problem of picking a wide-angle. I currently shoot on an APS-C sensor, so my only option is the EF-S 10-22. In the next year or two, though, I’m going to upgrade to a FF (either the 5d mk II or the mk III if it’s out by then), and then I’ll need another wide-angle. I’m going to keep my XSi when I upgrade, mainly for telephoto.

All EF-S wides are L, so my options are:

  1. spend $800 now on a lens I won’t need later, and then spend about $1500 more on whatever wide L glass is available at the time;
  2. wait until I upgrade to FF to get a wide-angle, saving the $800 now;
  3. spend $800 on the EF-S and totally scrap the idea of going FF since I’ll have every effective focal length from 16-408.

Right now my only L is the 70-200 f/2.8 L non-IS. My favorite lens though is probably my 50 f/1.4. I really want to upgrade for several reasons, the primary one probably being to get a camera with dual D!GIC 4 processors. The 7D is more affordable and a great camera, but it doesn’t make sense since it’s also an APS-C.

After all is said and done, more is said than done.

by ayleein on Mar 12, 2010 12:16 PM CST reply actions

That's a tough delemna because you're looking for wide.

Usually the question of full frame vs APS-C is a matter of “what are you doing with the photographs?”

I know it’s all great and dandy to have the finest equipment but…

I still (STILL) get along fine (mostly) with my old Canon 30D. I have great glass that I’ve been collecting for that day that I do upgrade the body but because I don’t do weddings anymore it’s hard to justify getting a 5D MarkII. I like the 7D as an alternative and really the only compromise (once you’ve gotten used to adjusting lens mms) is getting your hands on a solid wide angle lens.

If you’re outdoors alot you’ll benefit from the tighter seals on the 5Ds but you have to ask yourself if it’s worth the added investment.

You can spend $800 dollars on the wide angle now…and get the 7D (which will also save you tons of money even without Geico!) and I still find it hard to justify the 5D MarkII pricetag unless your a fairly successful pro where it’s an investment in your business.

by ayleein on Mar 12, 2010 12:16 PM CST reply actions

Since most of my shooting was telephoto, I loved the ‘magnification factor’ of the smaller sensors. But since I also still shoot film, I never got a lens that wasn’t FF.

Without going into too much detail.

They’re using a tilt-shift lens which allows the camera to distort the viewing plane.

It’s an optical illusion where a very small depth of focus allows the foreground and the background to render out of focus.

This messes with your internal “sense of scale” and makes things appear to become minature as we’re used to seeing ultra short depth of field images found in macro photography or when our eyes are “focusing” on small objects.

by Damien Franco on Mar 13, 2010 5:57 PM CST up reply actions
