TTUMAR INSPIRED ME TO MY FIRST FANPOST!!!

First a little about myself..... I hold two degrees from Texas Tech and Love my school..... I find myself being the forever optimist about every Red Raider team that competes.... From wool judging to womens volleyball.... Am I disappointed a lot... Heck yes.... But I dont know what I would do with some of my freetime if I didnt waste it being overly optomistic about my Red Raiders!!

I have been a observer of Seth's site for a long time but never had the nerve to sign up and contribute until the Mike Leach debacle forced my hand in doing so.... Am I sad and pissed he is gone..... HECK YES!!!!...... Am I glad we got Tubs to replace him....... HECK YES!!!!! All we can do is move on and remember that we still have student athletes out there competing and by refusing to give back to our school does nothing but hurt our alma mater for years to come.... And with the amounts of free money that TU and Old Timer AG get from the state that tech doesnt have access to, Texas Tech can't afford to take a hit from its own Alums!!!

I ask all of you to find another school that comes close to the strides Tech has taken educationally, athletically, facilities/building, and in overall reputation over the last 12 years....  If you havent been back to Lubbock in the last decade???? You will likely not recognize much of campus or Lubbock for that matter!!!....

Anywho... on to the discussion I hope to inspire.....  I have seen so many people trying to make fun of and knock Tubs "Red Raider Walk". I dont get it!!!! Why not try something new.... Are we that close minded??? I love trying new traditions.... But what happened to our old traditions???? I'll begin with the one I am most upset about!!! What happened to Raider Red's Shotguns???  They sound like cap-guns!!!!! They have become laughable... back in 2001-2003??? They got very quiet!!!! I have heard two reasons for this???

according to Saddle Tramps.....

1. When Dr David Smith was chancellor, he complained about them being to loud for people in the boxes and suties... If that is true, I am so pissed I cant even comment other than.... dont ruin the atmosphere for everyone else...if you dont like loud environments, dont go to a football game!!!

2. post 9-11 things changed and they dont pack the shells anymore... Tech PD does it.... Well that is fine and dandy.... but with increased oversight, and the police department packign the shells(knowing they arent putting slugs in them) cant they still have enough black powder to make my wife jump??? I couldnt even hear them the last time I was at a game.. the crowd muffled the guns.... Our freakin motto is.... Get your guns up!!!! We cant even do that right and make an impact!!! schools all over the country have guns and cannons and whatever... I would bet ours are in the top ten in notoriety and bottom ten in loudness/impact!!!!

another tradition that went by the wayside was the ROTC cannon.... it dissappeared.... apparently ROTC cadets thought it would be funny to overpack the "wad" in the shell and it shot accroww the stadium and hit the building on the other side of the stadium.... so rather than give them some accountability and oversight, They just said...lets put the cannon in a shed and forget all about it!!!! I dont understand it!!!!

back int he late 90s.... other teams hated when we scored because the cannon and guns were so loud in our "little high school stadium"  WHAT HAPPENED???? CAN WE MAKE THE GUNS LOUD AGAIN??? I WANT TO SEE SMOKE RINGS AGAIN????? CAN WE BRING THE CANNON BACK?????

WHY NO MORE STREAMER DROP WHEN TECH WINS BASKETBALL GAMES???? THEY DONT WIN AS MUCH SO YOU CANT TELL ME IT IS COST PROHIBITIVE(HAHA)!!!

Please discuss, lets make a difference!!! Should we all send emails to the admin, Dr Dean, Tubs???

I love loud guns. I also really enjoyed the cannon.

I don’t think you can call something your “tradition” if you are doing it because they did it at the last place your new coach was at. That’s a really loose usage of the word. It’s a fun/crowd pleasing activity that Tubs thinks is neat. I’m sure it’s great but it is not “our” tradition, it is Tubs tradition, until we put our unique mark on it in some way.

Basically, I’m suggesting we treat the Red Raider Walk like the running of the bulls since we’ve got the Matador thing going. And a massive outdoor tortilla fight.

We could always make the players all ride horses down the path........

and afterwards scrape up all the festering feces, and have it delivered to the Admin Building in a burning paper bag.

Hance: “What is it Gerald?”
Meyers:“Judas Priest Hance, it’s one of those flaming bags again !”
Hance: “It bet it’s from Leach, don’t put it out with your boot !”
Meyers: “Don’t tell me my business devil woman !” -—-stomping out the flames with his boot.

Running of the Raiders
I’m suggesting we treat the Red Raider Walk like the running of the bulls

The only way I will support the walk is if we put up ten foot high walls on both sides, dress the team in full pads, and have them run full steam after the administration a la Pamplona.

my thoughtful reply

First welcome to the fray. Since you can get “pissed” may I recommend the open basketball threads. Second as to th “walk”. Some of us have no problem with it but to name a new tradition before it happens seems more like grandstanding by JFKJ. As for the guns its simple we have become pussies. When did we last win a basketball game? Was paper even invented then? Good times

Tortillas

I never thought the tortilla throwing was a big deal, and should never have been regulated.
Tuberville should re-take this old tradition of tossing them up at the start of the game.
1. Good for business sales.
2. We were known for this in the early to mid 90’s.
3. Its awesome to see about 20K to 30K tortillas in the air at game kick-off.
4. Easy, easy for clean up……Why?: because they dry-up, harden, and are swept up just like all the other cups, paper chips trays, and miscellaneous trash.

+1,0000,00000,,0000 to tortillas. My favorite part of the games as a kid was watching them all fly. I’m sure some aggie said someone froze one and hit him with it. Well if you can keep a tortilla frozen in hot west texas until kickoff of the game thats sayin’ something. Tortillas still fly every game but its only a few. And they have these nazi guys in event staff suits with binoculars watching for them. Idiots.

One time, back when I was in my paint up days I brought two 100 packs of corn tortillas and threw them everywhere while in the line outside. Sure enough at kickoff at least 50 of them went flying. People love that stuff.

tortillas still might work

if the 18 yo drunk idiots wouldn’t throw ’em at the field

So it's ok if the 28 year old drunk idiots throw them?

And its not a tradition that can be stolen b/c it doesn’t really belong to anyone. Midnight Yell belongs to the aggies. Tortilla throwing to us. This walk crap is done by dozens of schools. Big deal. I like the idea and lets do it. It may become a tradition but you can’t steal it if its open source.

by logan5555 on Mar 19, 2010 4:45 PM CDT reply actions

I'm just being logical. . .

About the pre-game walk. Students in the SEC have ASSIGNED seats. . this person has to wait in line for several hours to get a good seat at a football game. I’m ALL about team spirit and think new traditions are just grand, but I don’t think it will work.

I’d love to bring the cannon back. . .anybody know what happened to it?

by taraebeth on Mar 19, 2010 5:08 PM CDT reply actions

let tubby walk

From the health center commuter lot on game day affter 6 hours of beer and see if HIS buzz wears off. And tarabeth I had not considered the students waiting in line for a seat. But I am certain hance myers and John Fitzgerald Katfish did

Good words Guns-up

if you believed them when you wrote them, do not back off one iota.

It is absolutely hilarious the reasons people find to not support something that could be fun for the Raider Nation. The walk, what ever one decides to call it—as if that really means anything, can be a really great time for anyone who choses to do it. Don’t classify it , don’t analize it, don’t worry if someone else has done it, if it looks like fun do it.

All your points on on the mark, a fan, a TTU kind of guy who loves to enjoy the sports programs sponsored by his/her alma mater, what fun ! Do It ! And if anyone objects in a blog, that is fine too, just do not let it get in the way of what you want to do.

we really need to do something to get that cannon back!

plus, I would like to hear a louder, longer Air Raid siren go off as well! the one they do now is fake, not loud and short.

how can we get this done?

My evolution on this walk

Both schools ctt came from did it, are you really that predictable?
Go ahead and try this thing, but don’t try to shoehorn too much and let it morph into something that is more unique. We can’t bitch at Osu about copycatting and let’s hope ctt is less predictable on the field.

Does Tubs know that all the students will already be in line at the gate?

First come first serve on student seating, so he might be disappointed by the turnout for his team walk.

Not Really

The walk takes place quite awhile before game time…the players are not in uniform or even taped at that point…plenty of time afterwards to down a few more, eat some more fajitas and get a seat.

students line up almost a week in advance to get a seat, let alone a couple of hours

Looks like that particular group of students are occupied.

Maybe there are others who would enjoy stopping by the walk on the way to the game…

Yep....Seen it. Point?

Dan Law to the stadium isn’t going to provide room for everyone in the stadium anyway…the students that want to be there will be able to…the Alum and fans that want to will be able to. I simply don’t see the problem.

Why not...

Just show up at the walk, cheer for the players on your team, be a fan and see what happens?
