Recruiting on the High Plains :: LB Devon Hocutt

The Red Raiders received their second commitment of the 2011 recruiting class, LB Devon Hocutt, who is absolutely huge for a high school linebacker.

Here's what I've been able to find out about Devon this morning.

The Measurables:

Devon Hocutt
Position: LB
YouTube: N/A
Rivals Profile5.6
Scout Profile
ESPN Profile 74
Ht: 6'0"
Wt: 260 lbs
Forty: 4.80
High School: Ellison (Killeen, TX)

More about Devon after the jump.

Star-divide

The Player Speaks:  Killeen Daily Herald's Alex Byington spoke with Hocutt yesterday about his commitment to Texas Tech and he had this to say about why he chose the Red Raiders:

Hocutt said one of the biggest reasons for his quick commitment was the family atmosphere he felt while being recruited by new Red Raiders defensive coordinator James Willis, who joined Tuberville after spending a year coaching linebackers at Alabama.

He also liked that Tech's interest in him never wavered.

"What impressed me most was that as soon as they were interested in me, they sent me a faxed offer, and then today, I got another offer from them in the mail," Hocutt said. "And when I got that second offer from them, it seemed like they were very interested in me."

Also interesting is the fact that his best friend is David Cobb, a pretty special player in his own right, brother of current Red Raider Daniel Cobb and a running back for Ellison.

While he can't officially sign a letter of intent until National Signing Day next February, Hocutt acknowledged that he's looking forward to joining forces again with Cobb, who's the older brother of current Eagles tailback – and his best friend – David Cobb.

[Note by Seth C, 03/02/10 8:34 AM CST ] I forgot to add this regarding a possible position for Hocutt:

"The only thing is I don't know if I'll be playing offense or defense," Hocutt said. "They're looking at me at fullback, a stand-up end, a defensive tackle or at linebacker. Right now I'm just (regarded) as an athlete."

Scouting Report:  I'm a little wary about linking to this, but here's a bit of a scouting report on Hocutt from Coach Schuman's High School Football Recruiting Blog and Hocutt apparently attended one of the combine's there:

Devon is a straight beast, Physical and freakishly athletic for a guy who weighs 256. Great footwork, speed, and power for an MLB.

Snip.

Devon is also among the Best LB's for the class of 2011. Shoot, he would be listed as one of the best DL as well if he was a Defensive Lineman, but lets discuss him as an LB. Good speed, great athleticism for 256 and sideline to sideline capability, whats not to love. He can cover rb's very well and he can bump them right into the dirt. He has great power and ball skills, he has offers already from number big 12 schools and expect more to come. Tenacious, fierce and a straight baller. He makes plays in one on one's and on 7 on 7's in the camps and then on film...well get film on him he is a killer.

Video:  No free video at this time.

Devon, welcome to Texas Tech and Git Your Guns Up!

A 260 lbs Athlete

Awesome

"I find I'm so excited. I can barely sit still or hold a thought in my head. I think it's the excitment only a free man can feel, a free man at the start of a long journey whose conclusion is uncertain. I hope I can make it across the border. I hope to see my friend and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hope." Red-Shawshank Redemption

guy plays Tennis and competes in the high jump. At 260. Wow.

I can see him slimming down to 240 and being an absolute mauler of a linebacker.

Dropping 20 lbs may up his speed quite a bit, as well.

only drawback

Now that he has already committed to TTU rivals will undoubtedly rank him as 2 stars and never give him a second glance.

by jdeeTTU on Mar 2, 2010 8:52 AM CST via mobile reply actions

We might consider that a plus...

whatever rivals does will not affect what Hocutt will do at TTU.

I would like to simply keep him committed to TTU and get him in a uniform.

That's awesome

I can’t wait to see how this one works out.

Helmet

He needs to get a helmet that doesn’t cover his eyes. But it does make him look more intimidating.

I guess this is an example of simply finding a great athlete

then seeing where he will fit as he develops at the Div1 level.

He has a bit of an indimidating look about him.

I am kind of surprised that he slipped by the staff at the near by Big12 program…

One Scary Athlete

How would you like to be lined up on the other side of that look. He looks like he would eat you for dessert after he had his way with your offensive line.

260 lbs. and a 4.80 40 yard dash..........

If anybody was ever curious what it felt like to get hit by a train, this would be it. That’s pretty fast for that size.

Sounds like a linebacker should be. Welcome aboard Mr. Hocutt.

Christ

That kid’s a monster and has speed to boot.

Now imagine if he got down to the 235 range.

Monster

For sure, this guy will be an awesome college LB. Some say he could lose weight…..WHERE? LOOK AT HIM! He is solid muscle. He reminds me of Baylor ex Mike Singletary, but bigger.

His measurables...

are similar to what Ray Lewis is currently (6-1, 250 for Lewis), but I doubt he’s the beast that Lewis is in the NFL straight out of high school.

I bet he could lose a few pounds.

Another Year of Growth

May make him faster without losing weight. Now that would be scary.

Something that concerns me

Tech is currently the only school to offer him, and he of course took it (otherwise we wouldn’t be talking about him this morning).

Should others offer him (TCU, UT, OU, OSU, Michigan, and LSU are a few of the other teams in the running) would he stick with Tech?

by TheScarletandTheBlack on Mar 2, 2010 12:37 PM CST reply actions

If this concerns you.....never follow CFB recruiting.

This is an age old situation, and it doesn’t matter if you USC or USF, 18 year old kids change their minds on a dime, and the entire process is a roller coaster. If a better program offers this kid, and he doesn’t leave, that says alot about this kid and this staff. If the kid gets a better offer, and takes the better offer, he will be doing what 99.99% of us would do in his shoes. This all boils down to avoiding “blatant homerism”, and understanding we are the third or fourth best program in our conference. So if a kid chooses the 2 or 3 programs in front of us, that should be expected.

Our goal should not be to count on stealing recruits from the big boys, it should be to become a big boy, and challenge others to steal from us!

by TTUMAR on Mar 2, 2010 12:51 PM CST up reply actions

Oh but...

I do understand we are the third or fourth best program in our conference. Hence (God that word’s really too close to Hance, must use synonym) why I made the post saying it concerned me.

With that said, I’ve always been one to stick to my word. So, if it was me, I’d be sticking to Tech. However, not everyone’s like that. As you said it’s really going to come down to what kind of person he is.

As far as stealing recruits goes, I think we’re starting to get to the big boy level. This year it was Boone being stole by LSU (you can’t convince me he was staying at Tech even with Leach here, he never really said much about Tech even while Leach was the coach), and this kid looks like he would be a fit at some position at just about any program. This could be a challenge to keep him to ourselves.

by TheScarletandTheBlack on Mar 2, 2010 1:12 PM CST up reply actions

I hope we are close to BigBoy status...

but we are not there yet. How will we know when we are? One indication may be that when conference re-alignment is discussed, we fall into the category of those being wooed, not the category of those left behind. Just think, it all starts again in a few short months…….if we don’t win the first one we can’t win’em all!

Is Mizzou being wooed?

or they just begging to be chosen?

To be 18

Athletic, possibly good looking, and probably have girls around you all the time can definitely influence a person. Having not one of the 3 things I mentioned above, I definitely can’t relate to what these players go through.

Yup he's a local Killeen Kid

Lets keep our fingers crossed with regards to academically qualifying. A great find for the Willis LB crew. He leaves mayhem in his path.

Mark this up as the first big recruiting home-run for DC James Willis.....

and the first of many, many more to come. For anyone that was doubting whether or not Willis was an upgrade from Ruff, here is your justification. No disrespect to Ruff, he was a good recruiter, and its been documented many times that he was a father figure to a lot of recruits and players….but Willis raises our defensive recruiting to a whole other level.

Hocutt said one of the biggest reasons for his quick commitment was the family atmosphere he felt while being recruited by new Red Raiders defensive coordinator James Willis, who joined Tuberville after spending a year coaching linebackers at Alabama.

Add to the family atmosphere a flat out impressive resume…former standout linebacker, played in the NFL and just coached a national championship team that was led by the best defense in the country. What high school defensive player would not be swept off his feet?

What highschool defensive player would not be swept of his feet?

Um, maybe all the ones that have already committed to Texas for 2011? =)
I jest, I jest. Of course I agree Willis is an upgrade.

by TTUMAR on Mar 2, 2010 1:57 PM CST up reply actions

True about Texas....

But Willis did beat them in the national championship game….They are always going to beat us in the recruiting game….but then again, not all recruits live up to their hype.

I don’t think I’ve ever been this excited (maybe going into 2008 season) about TTU football just for the simple fact that I can see us improving dramatically….and continuallyfor years to come….on DEFENSE! What an amazing concept!

Perhaps Seth should have a series of articles/musings....

to get us acclimated to watching the defense again. What random film can he reference for this?

How come everyone is talking about him at LB?

Kid is still in HS and already built like a beast, another year of maturing and I’m sure he will put on more muscle weight (lets just hope he keeps his speed). Tubs wants DE’s to be fast, and has said he doesnt care too much about size. Imagine this guy puts on another 10 to 15 lbs and keeps that speed. Stand up DE fits him perfectly!

by RdrPwr on Mar 2, 2010 4:10 PM CST reply actions

Exactly

This kid looks more like a DE than a LB. Hell, he looks more like what most of our DT’s looked like coming out of HS….but he has speed.

by TheScarletandTheBlack on Mar 2, 2010 4:47 PM CST up reply actions

I agree

But the important thing is he is going to be a Red Raider and did someone say he is a beast.

I am beginning to wonder if we will see him playing HB some.

That might make mr opposing LB think a sec on a goal line short yardage play…
