Recruiting on the High Plains :: OLB Terrell Hartsfield

I'll be honest, I was shocked when I woke up this morning with an email from RP.com, notifying me that Texas Tech has secured their 4th commitment of the 2011 class, from none other than Hargrave Military Academy, where Robert Prunty, current defensive ends and outside linebackers head coach, was the former head coach. Welcome to the fold Terrell.

Terrell Hartsfield
Position: OLB
DTN Profile
YouTube: Clip 1 : Clip 2
Rivals Profile N/A
Scout Profile
ESPN Profile 45
Ht: 6'4"
Wt: 215 lbs
Forty: 4.84
High School: Hargrave Military Academy (Chatham, VA)

As an aside, Hartsfield was actually in the 2010 class, but due to the fact that he's going to Hargrave (like a prep school) next year he'll then be in the 2011 class.

Links and a little bit of video after the jump.

Star-divide

The Player Speaks:  Scout.com's Scott Kennedy apparently broke this commitment for Texas Tech and Prunty is the reason why Hartsfield is committing to Texas Tech:

"I've known Coach Prunty," said Hartsfield, "and I trust him. He's going to be my position coach at Texas Tech, and that's why I committed to them."

Hartsfield also said that he wants to get to Lubbock in January and knows that he still has work to do:

"I know I have a lot of work to do to get there [in January], but I'm willing to do it."

Scouting Report:  It was tough to find any sort of scouting report on Hartsfield, but I did think there were two things that didn't belong, which was Hartsfield's 40 time and this mention in the above linked story:

At 6-4 and 215 pounds, Hartsfield also set his high school records in both the 110 meter hurdles (14.7) and the triple jump (43'11").

It's been a long time since I've looked at high school track times, but from what I recall, running in the 14 second range is pretty good, which makes me think that his 40 yard dash time may not be accurate.

From looking at the videos, the one thing (and I imagine we'll be saying this quite a bit) is that there's some pretty serious speed being attracted to Texas Tech.

Video:  I found two videos of Terrell.  The first is a short video of him blocking a punt and the second was a highlight reel of his high school team's win over a rival school.  You'll have to stick around to the very end of the video where you'll see Terrell jump in front of a pass on defense and run it back for a pick-six.

The 2011 Class:

Position Commitment
QB Michael Brewer (6-0/175)
RB -
WR Javares McRoy (5-9/165)
OL -
DL -
LB Devon Hocutt (6-0/260)
DB -

Terrell, welcome to Texas Tech and Git Your Guns Up!

OLB? more like a CB

he seems small (weight wise) for a OLB. Definetly a CB or safety. And he’s way faster than his 40 suggests.

What do you call a Serbian with an insatiable desire for sweets with only one nad (in his throat)?

Seems more like a 4.5 guy. Lotta people talking about his 47’ triple jump and 14.7 110m hurdle time.

and a 6’4", 220 lbs, we’re not talking about a small dude. He will be physically mature when he enters school here at the age of 20, but he that’s a frame that can carry 240 with a sub 4.6 speed.

Totally disagree

Has the frame and speed to be a game changer.

If he can bulk up and run a 4.6 at 240

that is SCARY o_o

I dont think

we have ever had that speed/size combo here at the LB position

at least, not in the Mike Leach era

by Thundarr on Mar 22, 2010 9:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, the speed concept is pretty confusing at times...

speed is relative…what speed are you speaking to. Have we ever heard Mike Leach, Ruffin McNeill, or anyone who coaches football talk about speed in terms of ‘well, we have a guy who runs a 4.5, so we are going to be pretty fast…we have speed?" The coaches talk about speed more abstractly (compared to the recruiting services). A guy who runs a 4.8 ( or a 4 whatever) may start fast and end even or he may build speed over the 40 yards, he may start fast get ’tired’ for a few steps and finish strong. I am kind of exagerating a bit to make the point….Criminey, a linebacker does not run 40 yards to make a play. His first three steps may be the quickest in football history but result in a 4.8 overall for 40 yards.

The play is over after about 3-4 seconds, maybe 5, for a linebacker trying to make impact in his normal zone of responsibility…if he got to the qb, what is the concern for the remainer of the forty yards ? For a linebacker, shuttle time may be more indicative of game speed.

Have any of you noticed

That ECU is going after, and being considered by, the same recruits in many instances as is Texas Tech? While the Raiders are starting to obtain some nice verbals, I have a feeling that if we keep a distant eye on East Carolina for the next couple of years, they could be doing some very similar things, using the same type athletes, as Tech is going to be doing, offensively and, maybe, defensively. I think it is something we DTNers might enjoy watching as we cheer on several of Tech’s former coaching staff, especially Ruffin McNeil. Now, don’t get me wrong. I don’t feel their athletes will be as good overall as tech’s, or that we should turn from our beloved Red Raiders to watch the Pirates, but they will definitely be of interest to many of us.

TTpilk Psalm 117:
1 ¶ O praise the LORD, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people.
2 For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the LORD endureth for ever. Praise ye the LORD.

Wouldn't one expect the coaches at ECU

to do what the coaches at TTU (or at any other school with a new staff) are doing? They have been talking to some of these guys since they were in the 9th grade…the coaches have to continue to work those relationships or start anew building relationships…the last option is a hard row to hoe given they would being playing catch up with every new face.
