ESPiN Classic...

Amidst all the March Madness this weekend did anyone notice the 2002 Texas Tech vs Texas clash on ESPiN Classic on Sunday afternoon...Kind of random by the WWL but I enjoyed it anyway.  I watched the whole thing.  Just what I needed since the Runnin' Raiders on not in the dance.  All home games should be played at night with all black uniforms in the "Raider Crater".  Tough to beat...Watching Mack pacing and fidgeting with his headset as Welker and Co dissected  the whorns was priceless...the Captain looked so green when being interviewed after the Tech win...why do you think ESPiN put that on during the basketball chaos?  The Red Raiders are always a draw, I guess...

that is correct, sir...

Simms threw a huge interception late in the fourth quarter that sealed it for our Raiders…the crowd was going ape…Simms just got cut recently, I think.. that is probably it for him…at least his dad wasn’t like CJ…how in the world did a New Jersey boy end up in Austin anyway?

Poor Chris Simms

talk about a guy caught between a rock and a hard spot….He is the giftted son of a darn good player who may have expressed too much influence in his son’s opportunities—I don’t know but I think it happens.

Well, he did not meet all the expectations and could not capitalize on all the doors opened for him…so what, there are plenty of guys who do more with ‘less’ and they are the ones to think about…I cannot see giving much energy to another well, he-didn’t-quite-have-it-did-he-kind of guy…one could almost sign that set of words /s/ Adam James.

How do you know his dad wasn't like CJ?

ut mysteriously benches the previous year’s Big 12 offensive player of the year in Applewhite to start Simms. Then Applewhite has to be brought in multiple games to bail Simms out. I always thought that was kind of odd. I think Mack just plays the game. Leach tried to do what was right. Look where that gets you!

don't know the story then...

but Phil Simms doesn’t seem to be the type and I never heard anything in the press…of course, I never paid much attention to tu anyway… C. Simms did kinda suck in the big games though…but he is much richer than his dad…I remember going to Cowboy games at Texas Stadium on MNF against the giants and yelling “get Sting”…

Truth, even though Simms dad isn't the total slime bag CJ is.

And I will never forget how well Applewhite handled being benched for a completely inferior Chris Simms. He was classy in the midst of a total sham.

Major will be HC somewhere eventually...

the guy was a winner…always seemed to rally the troops at nut cuttin time….the players really responded to him the second he set foot on the field…don’t we have someone similar to that on our roster?

Sticks...

Not only do the faithful respond but his teammates do, as well…he has what is commonly called “intangibles”…I can truly see him emerging as Big 12 player of the year…he has got what Major Applewhite had…it is called leadership…and he doesn’t throw off his back foot…

Is he ever really "here"?

He was on a work trip and took a little extra time off or something.

Of course, it’s also possible that he’s helping Tubs with insider information on all things Tech.

I can see him and the Tubster getting along splendidly. I bet they have tons in common. /sarc

if you really thought Simms was inferior to Applewhite

you never watched them play

Simms was physically the superior quarterback, but was never allowed to learn to fight through adversity under Brown and Davis. Every time he threw an interception, they’d pull him. When Applewhite threw an interception, they’d put him back on the field the next series, and let him fight through it; Simms was never given that opportunity. As a result, Simms had a fragile psyche while in college, which I think he overcame in the pros. Simms played with a ruptured spleen during a game, so he learned mental toughness. Applewhite wasn’t even tough enough to make it through one FL offseason; he didn’t even make it to training camp before he quit.

Applewhite has been the recipient of a lot of revisionist history, because everyone loves the backup QB. Simms became the starter because Applewhite kept getting injured; people forget that Applewhite kept blowing out his knees and was injury-prone, because that doesn’t fit the myth.

Not to stir up trouble,

But didn’t Applewhite take over for Simms against yall in the 90’s and cause the come from behind win…. with the “flu”?

I would appreciate it if you didn't immediately assume people didn't watch either of them play....

You could have started this thought with, “I think that Applewhite and Simms”, instead of stating that somebody doesn’t watch enough.

That’s like me saying that you obviously don’t understand the game of football because you part your hair on whatever side of your head. Follow me?

4 pics and lost them the holiday bowl,

and I think another 4 pic day to loose the Big 12 against Colorado. Could go on, but you go right ahead with the notion that he was given a “fragile psyche”, because we are convinced of your ability to see into the head of any football player and know what he is thinking and feeling.

Maybe you have one of those “men who stare at goats” programs at ATM too.

I watched the two play often enough to know that Applewhite was one of the greatest college QB's of all time

And Simms was a waste of a uniform. I was at the Big 12 title game in 2001 vs Colorado. Simms had 3 picks & a fumble before Applewhite was sent in to replace him. Applewhite threw a 70 yard TD on his second play. That happened over and over during their career overlap. Besides, you mention the backup QB syndrome. Applewhite was the starting QB. Simms was the backup. The only love Simms got as a backup was from Coach Brown. He was a local hero to none of the Longhorn faithful. Makes sense that an Aggie would prefer him though. “So long to the Orange & the Whi-hi-hite.”
