Post Game Thoughts :: Baylor Bears 86, Texas Tech Red Raiders 68

Result :: Loss : 68-86 : SB Nation Box Score
Record :: 16-13, 4-11
Big 12 Standings :: 9th (tied with Oklahoma)
Up Next :: 03.06.2010 : @ Colorado (14-15, 5-10)

The Result :: The Same As It Ever Was: I caught a majority of the game, missed the last few minutes and missed the first few minutes. In any event, from what I saw, it's the same thing that I've been saying for three weeks: Baylor is a more athletically gifted team with more shot-makers and athletes than Texas Tech. Baylor shot better and out-rebounded the Red Raiders. Yes, that's right, yet another game where Texas Tech was out-rebounded by 16 boards. That's just ridiculous.

The Storylines ::

The Same Group: I've said this before, but I'll say it again. What you saw last night, sans PF Darko Cohadarevic and SG Nick Okorie, is the same thing you're going to see next year. I'm one of the more optimistic fans out there, but even I'm getting a bit depressed about the fact that this unit isn't going to change much, if at all, when basketball season starts up next year. There are significant problems with this team, starting up front, where this team has virtually no athletic ability to match up with bigger, longer and stronger opponents. Darko was and is this team's best post defender, and despite C Robert Lewandowski game last night, I'm not hopeful that this team is going to be able to compete on a night-in-and-night-out basis with the rest of the Big 12. And please keep in mind that this group won 3 conference games last year, while this year, they've won 4 thus far. The expectations won't be very high next year.

More storylines, graphs and video recap of last night's loss after the jump.

Star-divide

Excellent Start: As mentioned above, I didn't get to see the start, but I did note that the Red Raiders were up by 11 early in the game. From that point forward, the Bears never looked back. Tweety Carter was a very efficient 7 of 12 from the floor, including 3 of 6 from 3-point range and this somewhat goes back to the issue above, that this is the same group, which includes John Roberson's defense on the opposing point guards. Carter is a senior so Roberson won't have this same nightmare, but Carter was bigger and stronger, got to the rim and finished some tough shots to lead this team. Roberson on the other hand, was 2 of 8 from teh field, including 2 of 6 from 3-point land, both of those 3-pointers early and 9 points. That's not going to do it.

Better Classes: Right now, Rivals.com ranks Missouri, Texas A&M, and Baylor in the top 25 of the 2010 recruiting class. In 2009, Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma St., Baylor, and Kansas St. all had top 25 recruiting classes. That's 8 teams that have had top 25 recruiting classes in the past two years, and despite the fact that Pat Knight is making improvements, which I suppose he is, there are 8 other teams that are pulling in players that are supposed to be the best in the nation.

Recaps: LAJ's Courtney Linehan and DT's Mike Graham have recaps from last night's game. Head Coach Pat Knight talked about post-season chances:

"I don’t know if we can now," he said. "Really, with six losses like this, you’ve got to win at Colorado and then a game at the Big 12 (Conference tournament) to even be considered. But it’s not up to me, it’s up to the selection committee. No matter what, we’ll finish with a winning record, but I don’t think that’s enough. I think we have to at least add some more wins to this."

I wish I could be satisfied with this, but I'm not.

The DT also has a video recap from last night:

The MVP :: SF Mike Singletary: I don't know if I have any other options, as Singletary finished with 20 points, 6 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals and 0 turnovers.

Can't watch the recap

It was bad enough live. Like trying to watch the Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood. And the future, well we have baseball and football. Until we have a new coach, I don’t think we have Basketball.

Fire Knight

Hire Billy Gillespie. Become immediately relevant.
He’ll take who’s here and make them better. He’ll add someone from a Texas JC who will be a stud. He’ll beat top 25 teams in his first year. Tech’s players will be in better shape than everyone they play and they’ll play hard from tipoff to horn.

Game in and game out I get so pissed watching us get up 10-15 points in the first 15 minutes of games then just not playing the rest of the way.

What’s the deal?

Discipline

Or lack thereof. That is the key. It has shown up over the last two years. When the players do NOT call the head coach “Coach”, something is amiss, as is the case with Texas Tech basketball. We all know what NEEDS to be done, but until the GOB’s are out, we may suffer for a while.

TTpilk Psalm 117:
1 ΒΆ O praise the LORD, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people.
2 For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the LORD endureth for ever. Praise ye the LORD.

Rebounding and size

This team lacks both. All of these all-americans, and we can’t do the most fundamental things.

I am tired of watching singletary watching other teams rebound. Just a lack of discipline, or effort

Personally

The problem with this team is lack of chemistry. Year in and year out transfers replace last year’s Seniors and so it is just like sticking a FR out there with no experience whatsoever in Division 1 basketball.

I do think it is crazy to predict this team is going to show the same poor performance next year. You have Jaye Crockett finally coming in, 3 new guys coming in, and everyone else gets 2nd year experience play and should show some improvement if the coaches are doing their job (which I do think they are considering they took a joke of a team last year who barely pulled off double digit wins) and improved their record this year.

In the Big VII conference, to expect Texas Tech to jump to a Top 25 squad after suffering probably their worst season in a decade last year is just ridiculous. I don’t even think Billy Gillespie could pull off that miracle.

I’m giving Pat Knight one more year to prove himself before I jump on the “Fire Him” bandwagon.

I do agree that this team lacks size though. The coaches really should be looking for taller players and less guards. Forwards and Centers is what this team desperately needs more than anything.

The big VII huh?

If we only had seven teams I would be with you on not firing PK. But we have 12, so i want him gone.

I've typically been

incredibly optimistic, and I’ve thought that Crockett could be a valuable player next year, however, the problem with Crockett is that he’s still 6’6" (although I’ve heard he could grow to be 6’8") and when he checked in over the summer, he only weighed 186. That 14 pounds lighter than D. Roberts.

I’m not necessarily on the fire Pat Knight bandwagon, but I think there are some serious issues with the state of the program. And this doesn’t even consider the fact that after 2011, the top 7 players who will probably receive 95% of the minutes will be graduating, which means that he’s going to have to pull in an amazing class, and I have serious doubts about his ability to do that (although I think Wagner could be a special player).

Wagner’s a baller, but I don’t think he’s quite ready for D1.

I am too old

To give PK another year. I have seen enough of the results of the recruiting and coaching from him and his Dad (this was nothing more than a retirement gig for him, thank Gerald for that). When we get a new coach, it will take at least a couple of years to compete for a Big 12 championship and/or Top 25. Every year we wait adds to that wait after a change. Make the change now.
