What is a championship?
"The first law in advertising is to avoid the concrete promise...and cultivate the delightfully vague" John Crosby
Tuberville told the luncheon crowd at the Memorial Civic Center that he didn’t come to Lubbock to win six or seven games a season.
"We know how to win championships," he said. "You can just imagine here the excitement when we do win … because we’re going to win a championship. We’re going to win maybe two, maybe three, maybe four. It just depends on what the good Lord wants us to have."
This is a rather bold statement. Personally, I love it. I respect people that lay it on the line. But is he being purposely vague? What kind of championships are we talking about? We don't have any National Championship trophies in our rich mahogany trophy case, but we don't have any Cotton Bowl championships or BCS wins either. Ten years from now, how will we define his success in keeping this promise?
The choice "all of the above" is too easy. I want to gauge how we plan to hold him to his word.

With a Big 12 Title,
a BCS game will follow.

Big 12 Title for starters
We’ve sharred the South and a BCS game will come with a Big 12 title. So, for me, that’s where you have to start. Big 12 title(s) then lets work on that BCS.

Which means Missouri was the best team in the Big 12 in 2008

My point exactly....
where in my statement did I equate a co-championship with who is the best team. Wait a minute, mbrown do you work in Congress?
"We have a running game at Tech......sometimes we throw short passes." -Mike Leach
You said that a co-championship is no championship
The only Big 12 Team in 2008 to win an undisputed division title is Missouri. Texas, Oklahoma and Texas Tech being all co-titlists are inelligible for consideration. Leaving only Missouri as the sole undisputed Big 12 Division winner in 2008. Making them better than Texas, Texas Tech and Oklahoma. At least acording to the “no co-championship can ever be a championship” logic.
Now do you see? I’m disputing your logic that a co-championship is less than something to be proud of.
Please stop ending every controversial comment with 'Just saying'. Drives me batty. Thank you.
especially when that's alll you have.

Wrong again...
you are the only one extrapolating all this out, but then for some reason putting the words in my mouth. SARR asked in his post “how do we plan to hold Tubs to his word”. I simply stated IMO, co-championships would should not be considered. What that has to do with 2008, or Mizzou, I have no idea.

Yes OK did win. My point, not that you don’t know exactly what I was saying, is that Tub’s should not be let off the hook for any “championship” we have to share with someone else.

haha..........Catfish
being let off the hook……………just one of those days.
"There's going to be ups and downs but you have to enjoy the battle." Mike Leach
Agreed
It was nice to share the division title, but that is exactly what it states. The South is a “division title” and you don’t win the conference “championship” until you win the Big12 title game.
So (IMO) it doesn’t count unless you are the team who moves on and wins the Big12 championship game. Set aside all of the tie-break rules and all that other crap. Unless you play in the Big12 Title game, you are not the Big 12 champion. Regardless of what UT thinks…(see asterisk)

Yeah I found it strange that the Cotton Bowl was lumped with the BCS for this poll.
However, if Jerry has things his way, the Cotton Bowl might become a BCS game. At that point, they’d be giving out 12 invites to the BCS. This would make the BCS “just another” bowl…unless you make it to the big one.

Historical side note
So I was thinking about SARR’s post. This is no effort to make excuses for coach T because he can speak for himself.
But consider the historical background on why coach Tubs might hesitate to declare a desire to win a Natl Championship. And not just simply b/c that is huge statement from any HC.
Recall that his undefeated Auburn team was locked out of the BCS title game. Nowadays it’s silly to think of an undefeated SEC team not making it to the BCS championship game. But it happened and could happen potentially with a Tx Tech Big12 champion (though unlikely).
So if you consider that angle, it makes sense not to speak of a BCS Natl Championship b/c it’s possible he feels in some small way that is out of his control. If true, I say he is right. It is somewhat out of his control and up to the voters and computers to decide.

I'd be perfectly happy with a Big 12 Championship
Just really tired of aggie friends and distant relatives pointing out Tech not having one in football. If we could just win one I think it would lead to more. I keep thinking of that ’08 game in Norman and it still hurts.
"You've got to find your inner pirate" - Mike Leach
Aggies! Geez
I hear you ‘92. Frankly, most of my Ag friends don’t say much anymore given the performance over the past 15 years or so. We’ve clearly passed them by and I hope we remain with Aggie in the rear-view mirror.
That said, just sit back and think about how much it would piss off Aggie nation if/when we win the Big12. I’m not sure what I would enjoy more: our team winning it or the irrational and insane response from Aggie fans. That would be fun as hell.

True, as long as your just stating that on DTN, among friends, where no one can dispute your claim and just prior to sending a quick e-mail to your wife saying something along the lines of “if you read this I was just joking and carrying-on with the fellas”.
Otherwise, that statement is suspect.
But at least I believe the part about putting a marble statue of coach T in your bathroom.

Big 12 title or bust
The marker has been placed. The team, school and Alums need an undisputed Big 12 Championship. The System will then determine what follows that event. Tubs is confident as he should be. The machine can driven to the winners circle. It needs a guiding hand and a little luck. Can’t wait to see how the Spring game plays out. The local or regional sports writers will undoubtedly predict another 7-5 Tech finish with a 2nd Tier bowl appearance. Let em. I like the confidence and appreciate the fact that the old regime trended upward and the new regime will continue to improve "the product". Smile all you nay sayers it’s going to b a great ride. Win the Big 12 baby, just win it.
"do routine things routinely"
Lets win our first solo conference championship first
before we start talking NC’s. I really want a solo divisional and conference title first. Win the big 12, and the bcs game will come.
We gon rock it to the wheels fall off
Expectations
I think the overall point of Catfish is that if we expect (demand) great things from the program, then we will get great things from the program. Two good examples of this are Alabama and atm. Saban walked into high standards made them higher and in two years has a NT. Aggies got dispondant and continued to fall.
Its the point all along that the program although built by Leach was way bigger than just one man. Tubbs says this over and over again that its our program. I also get the feeling that he expect SEC quality fandom from us and that scares me, you can actually make out the hottie tottie and war eagle chants when those guys cheer in unison our Raider Power is just two words and it needs lots of work.
If my calculations are correct
The winner of the big XII has a 33% – 50% chance on making the National championship. So, worry about our division, and the rest will fall into play. We are lucky as hell to be in a position to practically automatically make the national championship game, by winning our division and conference. since the north sucks, just winning our division is a championship, but doesnt “count” as one.
I still want that solo south title though...
…just gotta run through the gauntlet that is the big 12 south.

Like the attitude
After giving some additional thought, coach T is exhibiting some of the very behavior many of us Tech fans enjoy.
Stating you plan to win multiple championships isn’t exactly your good-ol boy coach speak. There is a rebelious tone to that statement the won’t sit will with your typical aggie or horn fan.
Frankly, I love it. Screw ‘em if they don’t like it. This is our plan and our expectation.
IMWTx
Amen
If you don’t like TT that may be OK. At least he is going out on a limb. We haven’t won a Big 12 Championship yet and if he doesn’t in the first five years then even if is winning percentage is 8.5 games a year we replace him. But I like him and believe he can take us to the promise land. This time I will call him Catfish Jesus. Wreck Em!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am buying that he is talking about championships, the general application of the word, in what ever form they take. I know you wanted to be more definitive, but I believe that is the context he was speaking to.
What would anyone expect an ambitious HC to speak to as goals…if he choses to speak to goals ?
All it is to me is that Tuberville’s personality is showing…just like anyone else’s who is in that limelight. He likes to sell his program and he likes to put the goal out in front and work to achieve it.
Doing so helps his coaches and his players see what they are aiming to accomplish, why they are doing what they are doing, it also helps them put aside personal goals for team goals, because it is being spoken to so frequently, “this is the goal!”
I take it more as a matter of style. It is a little different than what we have seen in the recent past, I don’t better or not better. I could see the perspective of execute well, make routing plays and let the result be what it is approach as well. Style, personality, perspective. How a person is.
All coaches are judged by history on win/loss and Championships, the trophy case. Win/loss is important, trophies are +.
Sometimes a river boat can out run a pirate ship.
+1
it sure beats the hell out of a head coach talking about “hoping” to get to the NIT in mid-conference.
