Red Raider Gridiron :: Texas Tech to Open Against Alabama in 2012

Red_raider_gridiron_-_tiltshift__resize_-_2__medium

Getting Organized:  April 17th is sneaking up on me and I think we need to get somewhat organized.  I plan on driving up on Friday (from DFW) and then getting to the Jones AT&T stadium somewhat early that morning.  Normally, Texas Tech has a garage sale of all of the items that they want to get rid of from the prior year, which means that you might be able to pick up a TT vs. Ole Miss Cotton Bowl t-shirt.  In any event, I told my wife that I was going to go buy about 20 Texas Tech shirts on the cheap and then bring them to orphanage when I get to Ethiopia.  You can also get some great deals, including old jerseys and things of that nature.

What I need from you, is a head-count.  If you plan on attending the spring game and you also intend on hanging out with other DTN'ers then please leave a comment.  I'd like a somewhat official head-count.  Part two of this process will be to figure out a location.  I know that Raider Doc and maybe someone else has volunteered their tailgate as a DTN central, and if we can get an idea as to where we might be, this would be outstanding.  Again, that's for later in the week, but be thinking about location.

Texas Tech vs. Alabama in 2012:  Hat-tip jeffinhouston for the FanShot, LAJ's Don Williams reports that the Texas Tech Red Raiders will take on the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2012 at Cowboys Stadium the first week of September:

"Coach (Tommy) Tuberville is aware of the game and is in support of playing it,’’ Myers said. "I understand (Crimson Tide coach Nick) Saban is also on board for it. We’re in the talking stages, but we haven’t gotten down to talking contract with it yet.’’

The game would be the first weekend of September 2012, Myers said, and would not require Tech to move a game to accommodate a deal with Alabama.

My gut reaction is that this is a good thing despite the fact that tough non-conference games can be an awful situation, especially if we lose.  I do like the fact that head coach Tommy Tuberville is living up to his promise to play at least one BCS opponent in the non-conference schedule.

Different Strength and Conditioning:  LAJ's Don Williams writes about the different types of strength and conditioning work under Joe Walker, the new coach at this spot, replacing the dearly loved Bennie Wylie.  Here's DT Colby Whitlock:

"They’re sore all the time,’’ nose tackle Colby Whitlock said. "Especially when coach (Joe) Walker first came in. There was three weeks walking around with sore legs. Just some of the different drills and different lifts and techniques we did were really emphasizing our legs and were really something.’’

And RB Harrison Jeffers says that it's all about speed:

"It’s not more running, but it’s more agility and speed work,’’ running back Harrison Jeffers said. "With Bennie, it was more endurance. But with coach Walker, it’s more about speed, quick change-over, how quick you can get out of your cuts,  how quick you can do everything else on the move and how you can think while you’re on the move.’’

Williams also has this bit on the offensive line losing some of their baby-fat:

One place Red Raiders might soon be able to notice a huge difference is at the waistlines of their offensive linemen. Deveric Gallington has dropped from 354 pounds during the 2009 season to his current weight 325. Waddle dropped from 367 after the season to 337 at the moment. Mickey Okafor has gone from 345 after the season to 318.

Waddle said one new twist with Walker is the linemen keeping and turning in food-consumption logs each week during the off-season.

Gallington mentions that some of his weight came off with Wylie, but Walker has kept things up.  In any event, I always thought that the offensive line, especially the guys mentioned, were a bit overweight.  This is good news.

Running Back Competition:  DT's Mike Graham writes about the competition at running back and RB Aaron Crawford is trying to get back into the rotation:

"I’m not a fortune teller, but hopefully I’m going to do my best and work hard," Crawford said after the Red Raiders’ fifth practice of the spring Monday. "Nothing is given, and I’ve learned that over the past two years. You have to take advantage of every opportunity, hopefully just go with the flow and do your best."

Snip.

"I had some minor setbacks," Crawford said. "Everyone goes through that. I can’t complain, I just keep fighting, never quit. That’s the mentality."

I'm happy that Crawford has this attitude.  I know he has a place on this team, he can be a valuable player.

Exclusive, premium and highly guarded content after the jump.

Star-divide

Notes, Notes and More Notes:  The the same Williams article linked above (re. the Alabama game), Tuberville said that QB Steven Sheffield had the best scrimmage:

"I thought he had a pretty good day,’’ Tuberville said. "He was head and heels the best guy at quarterback, but (Taylor) Potts had some (passes) dropped.

. . . Tuberville also was critical of the team after the first scrimmage and expects better effort:

Tech coach Tommy Tuberville said the team didn’t grade out well on the first scrimmage. He said there were too many mental mistakes on both sides and the defense got tired.

"We looked good about 60 percent of the time, and we just kind of shut it down about 40 percent of the time,’’ Tuberville said. "You can’t win championships doing that.’’

. . . Williams also mentions that Tuberville wants to utilize a tight-end at least 15 to 20 plays a game this year and the comments on the LAJ will make your head spin.  For those of us who are a little more rational, Leach did utilize a tight end, maybe not 15 to 20 plays, but he did utilize a jumbo package, with Adam James at tight end and Ryan Hale at fullback.  From everything that I've read thus far, it still appears that the offense is going to remain relatively similar and I'll say this again, the only way the offense would have been exactly the same would be if Tuberville hired Leach as his offensive coordinator . . . Williams also details some of the stars of yesterday's mini-scrimmage and your leaders in the clubhouse are S Franklin Mitchem, WR Austin Zouzalik . . .

This List is a Joke:  FWSW's Steve Hunt ranked the Big 12's best quarterbacks and this guy had Oklahoma's Landry Jones as the best quarterback in the conference.  Ridiculous.  There's no debating that TAMU's Jerrod Johnson is the best QB in the league right now.  He was so much better than Jones, it's not even debatable and I have no idea how this guy could do this.  This must have been a typo.  The two Texas Tech quarterbacks were ranked third.

The idea of the garage sale is enough to get me out there, its just so tough from DFW. Id love a nice old jersey or some of that UA practice gear.

So Seth do you go to Denton and cut across, or run down 20 to 84?

So far so good

I’m planning on going provided no complications at the home front. Regarding Bama game, I like it. Could set us up for disaster but could also be a statement game with a 2nd yr. QB and another loaded offense from all indications. I can see that being a real attention grabber at the beginning of the season at Jerry World.

Jeez...

Yeah good luck taking on the Crimson Tide in 2012 Tuberville. Let’s hope they have an off-year otherwise I could see that game getting really ugly for our Red Raiders on National TV.

Prediction if they were to play now:

Alabama 56 Tech 17
Sad (and I hate to be the one admitting it) but you know it’s true…

Let’s just hope Tuberville doesn’t create a major FAIL in these next few years b/c I really don’t want to watch another game on National TV where Tech loses by +30 pts. It’s too painful for my eyes to bear witness.

Perhaps I should have more faith in my team, but I know Alabama is literally the #1 team in the country going into next season. I wouldn’t mind playing someone like LSU or Miami during the non-conference.

But Alabama, Tuberville??? The National Champions who whooped UT by 20 pts last year. He really wants to play UT, OU, (possibly Nebraska), and Alabama in the same season?!?!

He must be insane. O.x

Lest not forget the embarassment we had against Ohio State during non-conference a few years ago. That’s all I have to say…

I know we all want Tech to win a Nat’l Championship at some point, but beefing up the schedule really doesn’t help in that area. A loss is a loss and it really could define who goes to National Championship and who doesn’t regardless of who you lose to.

We need to remember that Tech managed to climb to the #2 spot 2 seasons ago playing literally 2 Double AA teams in nonconference. So it can be done w/o playing Alabama early on.

by SkyBlade on Mar 30, 2010 11:21 AM CDT reply actions

I disagree completely....

and you assertion that we got blown out by Ohio State " a few years ago" provides a lot of insight into just how “informative” your opinion is. We lost to Ohio State a decade ago, in the infancy of the Air Raid. If you bothered to watch the NC game between AL and UT you clearly saw UT owning AL until McCoy went out. If we can play UT and OK year in and year out and compete, we can compete with Alabama as well. Is it neccesary to play them to get to the big show, no. But to say that we don’t stand a chance to win that game is the same thing as saying we have no chance against the top of our conference, and history and fact would suggest your wrong.

"We have a running game at Tech......sometimes we throw short passes." -Mike Leach

by TTUMAR on Mar 30, 2010 11:29 AM CDT up reply actions

Alright say what you will. I still disagree though.
I don’t think it’s a smart move on Tuberville’s part to beef up the schedule so radically.
It certainly makes it a whole lot harder to get to the National Championship taking that route.

Like I said, Tech managed to climb to #2 a few seasons ago playing 2 AA teams in the non-conference. So it shows that a team can make it to the “Big One” without playing high calibur teams.

Personally, I’d much rather take that route to find a way to make the National Championship than to put everything at risk up front and setting up a situation where if you do lose that game, then your out of National Championship contention for the rest of that season.

That’s all I’m saying.
Now did I like the fact that Tech played 2 AA teams that year.
Nope, I didn’t. I think Leach should have reached out to squads like TCU, Miami, or some other mid-major.

But the idea of playing Alabama is just overboard in my opinion.
I know Tech is a good football team, but I certainly don’t place them in the same category as “Ohio State” or “Alabama”.

Not yet anyways. I want to see Tech win a Big 12 Championship first before I start liking the idea of playing Alabama.

by SkyBlade on Mar 30, 2010 12:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Win or lose it doesnt matter

This game will be a good measuring stick, can help get somethings corrected before conference play. Goes with the the Tubberville mantra of rasing the bar, this definitly raises the bar in terms of competition and exposure. A good game vs Alabama is way better than beating up on SMU.

by Gus Mitchem on Mar 30, 2010 12:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Good point, but I also think there is more to lose if your Bama...

and that’s why I can’t see them taking the bait. They won’t see anything resembling air raid in the SEC, and would take a lot of prep time away from preparing for their run happy rivals. Personally I think there’s a fair chance we would make their vaunted Defense look bad early in the season. Just don’t see any upside for them, unless they have totally underestimated Tech and would schedule the game thinking it would be a guaranteed win…

Likley to win becuase they were all pumped up? What we witnessed was the pure letdown of the rush of adereline of being over hyped.

My theory is that if Colt would have stayed in the game he would have been picked multiple times. The benefit of having the lesser QB was that he was overthrowing everyone including the defenders, those guys were covered up by SEC talent

by Gus Mitchem on Mar 30, 2010 4:52 PM CDT up reply actions

The competition is good

Tech will improve as a team playing NC level teams like Bama. Tech will have a huge home crowd going into this game as an underdog. A long day of tailgating followed by a game of this magnitude will favor Tech fans. If this game were played today or this season I would agree with you but by 2012 we should be very well situated. Think recruits!

by Raider1992 on Mar 30, 2010 12:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Well...

I’m not sure about the theory that playing a national champion makes you better:

First of all as discussed before, both Leach and Tubs at Auburn played just 3 ranked non-conference teams during their respective 10 year tenures. So this notion that Tuberville is raising the bar, assuming that it was previously low, doesn’t stand up to scrutiny. Neither Tech nor Auburn have played a ranked non-conference opponent since 2003.

Tech played Ohio State in 2002 and lost. End of season record: 7-5.

Auburn played USC in 2002 and 2003 and lost both games. End of season records: 8-5, 9-4. We all know how charitable the Auburn faithful were about those seasons (see Jetgate).

The Big 12 and SEC are tough places to play. That’s why overly tough non-conference schedules are generally avoided. If you really want to win a national championship, taking the low probability, high testerone approach doesn’t really work.

Playing for championships does not equate to playing the most difficult SOS. What trophy do you get for that?

We’re all knowledgable fans here, so we should not feed the Leach-schedule-sucked myth, when a) our choice of opponents is consistent with most Big 12 and SEC teams b) we’re not Boise State – we have to prove our mettle in conference where we play in the toughest division in college football.

There are no brownie points for losing to another ranked team, when Big 12 teams routinely play 2-3 such opponents in any given season, and SEC teams (including Auburn) routinely play just over 3 such opponents in any given season.

Skyblade, Tech is more than capable of competing with Alabama, but that’s not the point.

I would think the point is to optimize your schedule, focus on beating the teams in the Big 12 South first, proceeding to the Big 12 championship game and then onto the national championship game. That’s “all” you have to do to win a championship. The rest is just bravado and window dressing.

On a side note, since when did Texas Tech start having to pay Jerry Jones’ bills?

"This time it's different."

Exactly right!. But I'm admitting a weakness...

after reading the smack going on from Bama fans, the “high testosterone approach” is building some momentum with me. Those guys are “Longhorn smug”, and the tide may need to get “rolled the fuck out of” by some Air Raid at Jerryville.

I like it

I think the Alabama game in Dallas is great. We could win but Tuberville wants the game and will do what he can to prepare. It also shows that he is at Tech as more than a carpetbagger. If we look bad, he looks bad, and no one will want him. And so far, it seems we like what he is doing with our team, (we just need to get rid of the 3 Stooges). As much as I like Leach, I don’t like the Snyder approach having base drums make up your entire non conference schedule. Also, I remember that Myers scheduled the Ohio State game with Leach objecting, who I later heard say, I don’t like this game and we are preparing for the Big 12, not the first game of the year. With the right attitude, we can win some of these games and will reap the results in the future recruiting wars. Wreck Em!!!!

I like it, only because it is a Neutral Site. Going to give Tubbs the benefit of the doubt. He must know something about Alabama and or our Team that we don’t. We don’t need to schedule these types of games, unless you think we can win the game. So, hell, lets go get em. Go Red Raiders.

by Btech on Mar 30, 2010 2:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Perfect Scheduling

This is exactly how Tech should schedule the big BCS game it should have every year on its schedule. Do it in the Dallas area on a neutral field so we don’t give away a home conference game, play someone who has national interest so it’s a big televised game ($$$$$$$), do it early so the loss (if any) can be overcome through the conference schedule, and make a splash for recruiting. Do the naysayers who think we should duck competitive teams think the best players really want to play North Dakota? Really?

I like this game and think it is a huge winner for Texas Tech. I plan on being there and treating it like a Bowl game.

You hit the nail on the head$$$$$

Not only is it great exposure for us but in Jerryworld both Tech and Alabama can reap a huge payday with 100,000 folks. The downside which I think hurts ut and Oklahoma more is it gives Alabama recruiting exposure in Dallas and Texas overall.

I think it’s great that tubbs decided to schedule bama in 2012. He will have some experience with this team, have them organized, and have all of the recruits that he and Neal want to run this team. i don’t think it’s necessary, as almost everyone has pointed out, but if we win, it will be huge for Tech. Plus, in my opinion, we should play no teams like North Dakota, and 3 D1, non-automatic qualifying schools, like Houston, SMU, UTEP, etc and then one middle of the road BCS team, like vandy, South Carolina, Minnesota, Mississippi State, Louisville, etc.

I like what i’m hearing about spring training though… cant wait til the 17th..

Let's also not forget. . .

That we ended up playing ND State because Tulsa pulled out of their commitment in the spring of 2009.

Also, we were due to play a Top 5 team in TCU in 2010, which was changed to accomodate moving the Texas game forward and which led to us scheduling Weber State instead.

Alabama I can get excited about. North Dakota or Rice, not so much. Plus, it gives us instant street cred nationally if we win. No matter how good or bad Bama is at the time.

Tub likes to beat Bama

Friend of mine who is a big Bama fan told me that he was glad Tub was out of the SEC as “he had sure beat our butts six times”. Apparently, Tub has visions of 7 times.

Tech-Ex and RonnieB

I'll be there, assuming Blackbeard lets me sleep it off in his truck on the way back Sunday.
