Recruiting on the High Plains :: OL Tony Morales
After RB Kenny Williams and WR Derek Edwards commitments over the weekend it was a pleasant surprise to see the staff pick up an offensive lineman. This is very good news, especially considering the relative lack of depth, especially at the interior line spots, where I'm guessing that's where OL Tony Morales will eventually play. Let's get to it.
The Measurables:
Tony Morales
Position: OL
DTN Profile
Video: Clip 1
Rivals Profile5.8
Scout Profile
ESPN Profile 45
Ht: 6'4"
Wt: 300 lbs
Forty: 5.31
High School: Sam Houston (Arlington, TX)
And for those of you who have been looking for free video on Morales, look no further. That's right, it's what I do. I do my best to find free things. Huge. Quickly. After the jump.
The Player Speaks: RRS.com's Aaron Dickens has news and quotes from all three commits from this weekend (free and worth your time) and Morales had this to say:
"I called Coach Moore at first, because I was going to commit to him, but he didn't answer. I called Coach Brown and I told him, and he was real excited. He told me to call Coach Moore later on because he was in a meeting.
"He (Moore) was real excited. He told me that he was committed to me and that I was committed to him. He said that he wasn't going to look at any other centers."
Scouting Report: When you get to the video, you'll note that this video appears to be from Morales' sophomore year in high school (he mentions that he's about to be a junior), where he was playing almost exclusively left tackle and for a sophomore in high school playing the most important position on the line, I could say that I'm pretty impressed. He has good feet and moves well and he sticks with his block. Again, it's pretty amazing that he has these traits at such a young age. And from Dickens' article, it appears that Morales is slated to play center for Texas Tech, and by watching his video, this makes sense. I think he's more than quick enough to handle this position.

Nice pick-up
With the center position thin, this makes sense and frees the staff for them to concentrate on some other players, maybe even some projected to be 4 & 5-stars. Because UT and others have started this trend on early commits, the high school players are making the step also to do the same with the schools most interested in them and vica-versa. This makes it easy on them to concentrate on the school work and not be concerned with college recruiters or commitments.

Is it me or...
are you concerned that a few of the early recruits garnering less attention, making them a 1 Star Recruit? I know TT said that Miami never had a top recruiting class, but I’m sure they had better recruits than one stars.
No
There are no 1-star recruits. On Scout it means they haven’t been rated yet. Same as ESPN’s “45” grade. It means nothing.

I don't think
That anyone has posted rankings for players for next year yet. I may be wrong (again) but thought the rankings were released in summer for the next February. And then changed as players performed in the fall.
"I find I'm so excited. I can barely sit still or hold a thought in my head. I think it's the excitment only a free man can feel, a free man at the start of a long journey whose conclusion is uncertain. I hope I can make it across the border. I hope to see my friend and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hope." Red-Shawshank Redemption
I like this deal.
We have a guy who is best suited for the interior…a bit shorter than most guys on the outside who is coming in to play center…not only is he physically gifted, he has the smarts to play the spot…me likey.
