Wow. Espn's Newest Clueless Blogger Picks Tech LAST in Big12 South. I though Tim Griffin was bad at times, but you have to wonder how these people get jobs.

He's right though

We can either go out and blow the doors off(which is what im expecting) or get our doors blown off( which i dont see happening). UT and OU will be down this year, but A&M looks pretty good on offense, their defense is the big question mark. We get past A&M at their house, beat UT, i say that puts us in the drivers seat for the South.

We gon rock it to the wheels fall off

That makes me smile.

He's just lost his sports journalist credibility

Well he’s hedging his bets pretty well don’t you think? Tech’s 2010 season is a train wreck but we’ll get to a bowl game too? So we are going to get beat by everyone or nearly everyone In the South division, but we’ll win all the rest so we sit at 6 – 6 and go to the toilet bowl. Mr. Ubben just lost a lot of credibility. Does anyone recall Joel Klatt (ex jock announcer from U of Colorado) from Fox Sport Southwest picking Baylor to finish above us in 09? This is the same inflammatory crap journalism based on the thinnest of data mining possible. It’s blather from a wanabe blatherer.

I like it

The sleeping giant will prevail. I’ve said this before and I remain to believe Tech will have one of it’s best teams this year. Tech will beat UT in Lubbock and that will bring the doubters to the realization that Tech is a good team. Beating UT & A&M is key to shutting people up about our future. I view the A&M game over the UT game as a much tougher challenge next season. All the preseason hype will surround OU and Texas but that’s fine as long as we take care of business. I wouldn’t expect much praise in the media regarding Tech after what happened.

Typical

This is a typical prediction by someone who knows absolutely nothing about the Raiders, or anyone else it appears. Why is everyone slobbering all over themselves about OU and UT when they lost the most of any team in the South? Baylor’s ONLY player of note is Griffen, so them winning even 6 games will still be difficult. OSU also lost a lot, and their defense still will be poor, at best. Tech should have as good, probably better defense than last year and the offense, as we DTNers know, brings some extraordinary players into the mix this year. The ONLY place that will be in question for me is the QB slot, where any of the four competing for the job could explode into the starting roll, with highly capable backups eager to get onto the field. So, Tech is my favorite, homeristic as that may be, with OU, UT and OSU following. A&M and Baylor are not at that level yet. Ubben can eat dirt for all I care.

You're right...

ESPN always craps on us in their rankings, though. The only exception was 2008. I don’t even read their Big 12 blog anymore. I get the impression that they couldn’t name 5 players on the team, so there’s no sense in listening to their “predictions.”

by battledome on Mar 5, 2010 2:53 PM CST up reply actions

I got on there and gave'em my two cents...

but essentially we just need to shut up and do work. The haters are correct in that we have been pretty vocal about “this is Tech’s year!”, for some time. Yet we have nothing to show for it. As long as our pinnacle is a 39-33 victory over a UT team that didn’t even win the conference that year, we will continue to receive this disrespect.

It’s time to put up or shut up, and just do work son.

UT and OU could announce they are fielding their championship intramural teams

and releasing all of their football players from scholarships and they would still get picked #1 and #2. It’s nothing new, same story every year. The writers play it safe.

What this guy doesn’t understand is that he could quickly make a name for himself if he went out on a limb:
1. Tech
2. A&M
3. Baylor
4. OU
5. OSU
6. UT

It might seem far fetched but not completely out of the realm of possibility. And the funny thing is that the second that prediction is posted, thousands of burnt orange T-shirts would fall to the ground as the people wearing them spontaneously combust.

Why not make a name for yourself as a sports blogger and predict a topsy-turvy Big XII South? I’m sure he could come up with some argument for ranking it as you have. Or any other way that doesn’t have Texas/OU as 1/2 or 2/1. And as you say, it would attract all sorts of UT fans – no such thing as bad publicity.

The new blogger is no different than ANY other outside media guy. He knows only about UT and OU and everyone else he finds out about by reading what others say. He seems to think Tuberville will go back to an all run offense. Ludicrous. It’s common knowledge that one of the reasons the spread failed at Auburn was it was ABOUT AS DRAMATIC a switch as one could have in one season. Remember, Leach’s offense wasn’t real productive his first year or two in Lubbock. It takes the right mix of players. Auburn didn’t have that. By a long shot.

This guy is just going on what he thinks is common sense. Silliness.

by Tech92 on Mar 5, 2010 12:58 PM CST reply actions

Its clear he did no research at all. Even the most cursory looks at SI, CFB or even God Forbid Fox

Sports would have alerted him to the facts that the team is a Senior heavy Crew with a bevy of seasoned reserves. Oh and the new OC is a Wunderkind from Leaches coaching tree. Poor research indeed.

Crazy. That guy is freaking nuts!

I’m sure I’m biased (don’t care), but I can promise you I could at least present a credible and consistent prediction for next year. And I don’t get paid to do so.

He rationalizes OSU at 4 based on Kendall Hunter and Holgorsen bringing his spread offense to town. Does he realize Hunter’s touches will likely decline compared to their prior scheme?

Then he states his reason for Tech prediction is due to the changes in personnel. Anyone should be able to see it will be much easier to install Brown’s offense at Tech than it will be to install Holgorsen’s offense at OSU.

Geez, even when we changed from Spike to Mike Leach we didn’t miss a bowl game. When the hell did Baylor last go to a bowl game???

This guy is simply uneducated and has lost any credibility.

Tech was bowl eligible that year

They declined to go due to self imposed recruiting violation sanctions. Tech has been bowl eligible every year since 1992.

Coming from the same website

that has a link called “RUMOR CENTRAL.” The journalistic line between ESPN and TMZ is razor thin. 40% of their stories use “unnamed sources” for quotes and make “bold” predictions like this to stir up the hornets nest.

I’m honestly beginning to think they do stuff like this just to get 10,000 heated argument comments below the story. Its as if after the Leach/James fiasco they realized how many rabid Tech fans would fight to the death on the comment mill to defend their school, so now they try to stir up the hornets nest any chance they get.

Here is my Aggie friends response...

Sent to Aggie friend, he responded this way:

Worst prediction that I have seen. Ok State lost EVERYBODY. They lose four senior OLine and their QB. I don’t even know who their QB is. They also lost their entire back seven on defense and three DL starters. The only reason Kendall Hunter is coming back and wasn’t drafted is because he was hurt all year. I would be shocked if the Ags lost to them next year. Von Miller should chew their new Oline to pieces. What is Ok State going to do at Tech?

Robert Griffin will have to compete for the Heisman for Baylor to win six games. Why is Baylor getting all of this love? They lose everything on defense and have to build an O-line out of something. All of their stud oline were Guy Morris recruits.

Aggies will lose at least four games. They picked up Nebraska and Missouri this year and they will lose games from just injuries alone because they are a year away from quality depth. They also have to replace two starting offensive tackles. Their defense is actually going to be more salty this year though and I am ATM’s biggest critic……They have a lot of speed
Tech will be frothing to beat the Aggies this year. I barely like the Aggies at home but it will be a last possession type of game.

Until the Ags prove it, they are the fouth best team in my opinion behind OU, Texas, and TT. Ok State and Baylor will be a good game between the two of them but that is as much love as they get.

And he came up with all of that off the top of his head. Seems to me this WWL blogger is simply stirring the pot.

I think the criteria he used to rank the teams was stadium size

Only he didn’t realize Floyd Casey stadium is smaller than Jones Stadium.

I guess in the absence of research or any original thought, ranking the teams based on stadium size is as good a strategy as any. Except Jones Stadium is larger than Floyd Casey stadium.

This is the comment I just posted on their blog:

ESPN Supervisor: Hey, Ubben….Tech fans are die hard…remember the 50,000 comments we “created” by reporting all those “speculative” stories with “unnamed sources” on the Leach/James saga? The comment boards were lighting up like never before with Tech fans….

David Ubben: You know, you’re right…..and I’m a brand spanking new Big XII blogger…what better way to get my name out there than by making a totally bold prediction that will #### off those crazy pirates? I bet I could get 100,000 comments to my story? How many bloggers have had that many hits?

ESPN Supervisor: None. And its gauranteed that A&M fans will come out of the woodwork to rub it in to Tech fans, causing a giant ripple effect that will garner 100,000 more comments! Boom! You just went from irrelevant blogger to stud with one crazy, outlandish prediction! And who cares if Tech will end up finishing 3rd this year…by that time you can chalk it up to something else as ridiculous as this!

David Ubben: I’m really starting to get a hang of this ESPN sportswriting stuff….make “bold” predictions, use tons of “unnamed sources,”….heck, we even have a link on the website called “RUMOR CENTRAL.” Its like we’re a sports TMZ, but somehow, we are still considered a credible journalist organization! I love this gig!

by 2001Raider on Mar 5, 2010 3:03 PM CST reply actions

It’s a shame that ESPN is unable to recruit a blogger that can post readable content. Much like the Chron with Dick Justice, Ubben appears to be an antagonistic writer more intent on generating comments than intelligent material. I was really hoping that the WWL would replace Tim Griffin with someone that would at least be able to hold his ball point pen.

Here's the intro to Ubben - he's been around since ... Wednesday??!!

Click HERE to read David Ubben’s introduction of himself as the new Big 12 blogger replacing Griffin. It’s pretty clear to me that he does not even begin to understand what’s happening (or happened) in the big 12 other than what he and his grandmother could watch on ABC national telecasts in the last few seasons.

Maybe I should apply at ESPN…no…wait. I’m overqualified for the job since I actually watch the games on Saturdays and follow a couple teams in the off season.

by TheScarletandTheBlack on Mar 5, 2010 5:04 PM CST reply actions

huh...

I read the shot and thought “going into March Madness, yeah I could see that since the Big12 is strong this year”. Then I followed the link and saw that it was for football. The guy obviously does ZERO research. His “I’m Big12 blogger now” post was basically “I love Vince Young and I want to go to Tennessee and have his man-babies”. I can only assume that helps tint his UT #1 ranking, heck he probably phoned it in after that and just said, hmm… OU and aTm are considered UT’s biggest rivals, so they must be 2 & 3 (a DISTANT 2 & 3) to the awesomeness of UT. After that… Texas Tech beat UT most recently, so they must still be reeling from the euphoria of that and the odds for doing that again must be so remote, so I’ll rank them last. After that, I can only assume he thinks Robert Griffin is a poor man’s Vince Young, and no one can be as awesome as Vince Young.

Revision: I now understand his rankings, see the “Joe Schad, 100 players to watch list” (which he links in an earlier blog):
1. Oklahoma, six players
2. Texas A&M, three
T-3. Texas, two
T-3. Missouri, two
T-3. Oklahoma State, two
T-6. Baylor, one
T-6. Nebraska, one
T-6. Kansas State, one

He obviously ranked Big12 teams by number of players on the list, with an exception for UT, because they are the awesomeness that once had Vince Young.

(seriously, read his “I’m the Big12 blogger now” post, he mentions Vince Young (who hasn’t played college ball in over 4 years) more than aTm, Tech and Baylor COMBINED)

ubben posted something about not caring or being able to tell the difference between sheffield and potts. to me, that is his greatest score of idiocy.

whether our quarterback is sheffield or potts next year, you should be able to tell off the bat how different each one is. a scramble-passer vs a prototypical pocket passer is NOT the same thing..
