Good to the QB out of the way, now they can focus on the rest of the offense.

Ed. Seth C: I'm working on a write-up that will probably go to the front page on Monday. Nevertheless, cuss and discuss here.

This a huge get!

Someone needs to throw this on the big board. This guy is a stud, a steal from UT, and wow….wholly crap we are loaded at QB.

Again...

not a steal from UT… he was only offered a grayshirt there.

According to Rivals.com..

he holds an offer from UT. Again, these guys do it of r a living so forgive me if I use them as a source over perpetually pessimistic bloggers. =)

LOL...it doesn't matter what the offer was.

Different types of offers do not exist. Either UT offered him a scholarship or they didn’t. Whether he red or greyshirts is a decision not finalized until after national signing day. The process is the same regardless. Once again….the process is you get an offer, you choose whether or not to commit to the offering school, and then you sign. They made an offer, we made an offer, theirs was not as good as ours, we win.

He was offered on the condition that he would grayshirt (which is to say not enroll in the Fall) his freshman year

that is to say he wouldn’t be on the practice field in 2010… just like we’re doing Ben McRoy. Grayshirted players can still Redshirt during their freshman year… keeping them off the playing field for two years rather than one.

Now, tell me, why would you do that to someone you thought could be an impact player? Answer, you wouldn’t. Brewer may be a good athlete, but at 6’0" and 175, he’d never be a starting QB at UT. So, again, saying that we stole him is… unrealistic.

by battledome on Mar 6, 2010 7:25 PM CST up reply actions

Actually I think we should greyshirt Brewer too...

truth be told. Unless I’m missing something, If Karam gets a year or more, and then Scotty gets the remaining years of his eligibility, i don’t see how this kid sees the field, do you?

by TTUMAR on Mar 6, 2010 7:32 PM CST up reply actions

No...

but at least HC TT is sticking to the Leach plan of recruiting a QB every year. Nice to see that hasn’t changed.

by battledome on Mar 6, 2010 7:38 PM CST up reply actions

Leong was a grayshirt and I think that a grayshirt would have worked the same way as a redshirt year. No matter what, a player has 5 years of eligibility (unless there are other circumstances). The problem with Brewer at UT was that they signed 2 QB’s in the 2010 class (Connor Wood and Case McCoy) and signed a QB for the 2011 class (someone from Belton I think). The QB position was really crowded at UT (haven’t even mentioned that it appears that Gilbert will be starting for the next 3 years).

In any event, if Brewer or McRoy had grayshirted, it would have counted as a redshirt, but it would not have counted as part of the 2011 recruiting class, but rather the 2012 class (I think).

Indeed

They have a lot of people on the bench, but are very young and inexperienced.

The question about this qb being wanted or not wanted is going to be more answered for me if the whorns continue to recruit a qb this year.

I didn't realize they had taken that many QBs...

and thanks for the good info on grayshirting.

"We have a running game at Tech......sometimes we throw short passes." -Mike Leach

by TTUMAR on Mar 7, 2010 10:13 AM CST up reply actions

Correct me if I'm wrong...

but the way I understand grayshirts, the player doesn’t practice with the team (or receive a scholarship) during the Fall of their first year on campus. Often, athletes won’t even enroll until the spring. Therefore, eligibility is not affected and the athlete has five years of eligibility beginning with the spring semester following their graduation from hs.

by battledome on Mar 7, 2010 12:16 PM CST up reply actions

I may be completely off

(I’m going off of memory here) but I thought that the student-athlete showed up on campus (often not enrolling until the spring, but some show up in the fall) and the main purpose wasn’t to defer eligibility (the clock starts running once the student-athlete starts college) but for the scholarship to count towards the next recruiting class (i.e. Ben McRoy might not have had a spot this year, but perhaps due to some players not qualifying, he’ll be here in the fall).

Here is a definition

http://en.allexperts.com/q/College-Football-2792/Definition-Gray-Shirt.htm

Grayshirt is another new term and is applied to the prospect that signs a letter of intent in February, but doesn’t report in the fall with his teammates. He delays entry to college until midyear, i.e. January. That NCAA five-year clock doesn’t start ticking until the player enrolls as a full time student, so gray-shirting is really a delayed version of red-shirting. For Example, Texas Tech, signed 34 players in February 2006, but NCAA rules prevent them from enrolling more than 25 to start the fall. Some of those nine other players gray-shirted during the 2006 fall season. They cannot enroll in college as full time students, can’t receive their scholarship, nor practice. It is like getting an extra year of practice, because most of these players don’t see the game field until two years later and they have the advantage of going through an extra spring practice.

Sometimes a river boat can out run a pirate ship.

by TallMike on Mar 7, 2010 7:29 PM CST up reply actions

Right...

That’s the definition that I was using to build my case. The way I read it, the player’s eligibility runs out six years after he leaves HS, not five years.

Still doesn’t seem to me that you’d want to grayshirt someone who was going to be a real gamer.

by battledome on Mar 7, 2010 8:54 PM CST up reply actions

likely something about the assumption is false.

For crying out loud! This is from your own quotation! What part of “extra year” of practice don’t you understand?

well...

I’d say we “stole” him, if only because his daddy (and I think granddaddy) were both Longhorn players. Yeah, maybe he wasn’t gonna be their starter anytime soon, but having a kid pick our school over “legacy” tracking at UT is a good thing. But yeah, he was offered a grayshirt. According to the Austin paper he was also their current QB’s backup in high school.

Via John Mackovic of The Desert Sun:

"Grey shirt is a term used to designate an incoming freshman who waits until the second semester to enroll rather than the fall. College athletes are allowed a five year calendar to play four seasons. The calendar begins once one is enrolled. By waiting until the spring to start college, a player will be playing his last season in the sixth year after high school rather than the fifth. "

Nothing in that definition about the greyshirting being anything but a legitimate way to extend eligibility to a time where there is less competition. If UT says “we are stacked at QB, but we want you so lets delay your entry”, most kids are jumping at that very reasonable and legitimate offer. Luckily Tech made a more enticing offer.

I add:

Saying UT’s desire to have Brewer Greyshirt is no different than our own 2010 signee Ben Mcroy. Whether you have a grey, red, or no shirt…..you receive an offer, you commit, and then you sign. In this case Brewer intends to follow this process with Tech as oppose to UT. If that isn’t good news…..I’m putting you on suicide watch.

Robert Brewer was a walk-on at Texas (if my memory is correct) and went on to not only earn the starting QB job, but ended up as a Cotton Bowl MVP. If his son has even half the determination his dad did, you will have a great quarterback.

AMAZING!

This started with Leach and has passed on the Tuberville & Brown. With another year of school to go, he could easily “grow” into quite the specimen of a QB. He led Lake Travis to a state title last year and is poised to do so again this coming year, after Garrett Gilbert di so for two previous years. I have seen film highlights on the Austin news and he is a legitimate top-flight QB on par with Graham Harrell, Gilbert and Scotty Young. The quarterback mill just keeps rolling. With the talent available, there will be little decline should a starter have to leave the game of miss some games. The Raiders have set themselves up with huge talent at that position that will cover six to seven years. LONG LIVE THE MATADOR! WRECK ’EM TECH!

WATCH THE FREAKING VIDEO

He looks like freaking Colt McCoy!

He throws amazingly well on the run
His improvisational skills are incredible! Look at how quickly he changes from running to throwing. The play at 9:07 speaks for itself.
Extremely accurate.
Shows a live arm, he can get the ball anywhere on the field. Not afraid to hit it deep.

There is only one issue. His mechanics are a little tebow-like. Granted, his release is much MUCH quicker than his but he needs to learn better mechanics.

My point was that we really shouldn’t get all riled up over any recruit. Seems to be trendy that the more stars next to their name, the less a verbal committment means. So using that rationale, I hope Brewer is a 1 star b/c I really want him to sign with Tech. Really seems like a good kid.

Thanks, Seth

The video is great. As said above, Brewer is quite a play maker, capable of scrambling if he has to and throwing on the run appears to be an easy thing for him.Tech has some great depth at QB so I hope he can be patient and learn the offense to perfection until his number is called. He should be a monster by then. I think Tech’s future just continues to brighten as the recruiting talent level keeps moving upward. Brewer is very poised and makes quick decisions. I see nothing wrong with his throws as they are perfect almost all of the time. I can’t wait to see how he progresses this year. His commit makes the rest of Tech’s recruiting for next year easy by eliminating a major position from the equation. WELCOME TO TEXAS TECH, MR. BREWER!

Seth, I am still pretty new to the stie, but I can’t thank you enough for all of your hard work and maintenance on DTN. I watched Brewer in a state playoff game in San Antonio and thought that there was no way this kid would ever consider TECH. He is a lot like Sticks, but he’s faster and is deadly accurate. Remember, this kid is only a junior. Another year in the weight room, and there is no telling what this kid can do. I have always wonder what the TECH offense could do with a QB who could run the ball. There is a reason Leach went 10 years without an injury to his QB’s. They had to stay in the pocket. Can you imagine how many extra possessions this team will have when the QB can run the ball five or six times a game. And this guy can make space for himslef, buy some time, and find the open receiver. Then if Tubs defense can make two extra stops a game, Big 12 Championship is not out of the picture. Go back to the Nebraska game. Look what Sticks did to them. Colt McCoy could not figure out the Nebraska defesne. I think we are looking at a really good run here. Again, thanks Setch, and Go Red Raiders. I cannot wait until College Game Day.

Leach's qb's did not get injured

because he would not disclose injuries…there were plenty…but, indeed, not because they ran the ball.

All of us seem ready for the football season

And when we see this type of a commitment we all tend to get even more hyped. The quality of the last three quarterbacks signed on by, or verbally committed to, Tech is a whole lot better than most years previous to this. Tech has signed top quarterbacks before, but because of the type of offense Tech now runs there is much more expected from them. I like a quarterback with some mobility. He can then give the opposing defenses much more to be concerned with when preparing to play the Red Raiders. What is real nice about Brewer is his ability to escape tackles and make plays for positive yards. All these qualities are similar to what Sticks, Karem and Young bring to the table. Doege once had similar traits, but we have not been able to witness that, yet. Anyway, when Potts and Sheffield complete their eligibility, the quarterback position will be well taken care of, and our opponents are going to have many sleepless nights trying to figure out how to defend Tech. Sweeeet!

2 For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the LORD endureth for ever. Praise ye the LORD.

Based on the first couple sentences, this is for the newer guys.

We here at DTN tend to get EXTREMELY excited and feisty during football season. There will be arguments about what players should do what, and what the coaches need to do. But, at the end of the day we are all still friends and support our team no matter what actually happens. So new guys, dont be surprised when you see more and more bickering as season draws nearer. It’s all good.

No way

Leach was a horrible recruiter. Remember?

That is ridiculous...

Just because he recruited Adam James, who subsequently took down the whole coaching staff, and upended DTN, doesn’t mean he was bad recruiter……What a Leach hater, your better than that. =)
