Recruiting on the High Plains :: QB Michael Brewer
How about that? Texas Tech gets their 2011 quarterback in March of 2010. Not bad.
As an aside, please note that I've added the DTN profile link to each and every player on the sidebar widget as well as YouTube links, if available. If anyone ever finds any free video of a player, then please email me or let me know. Also, I've put a link to the 2010 and 2009 classes at the bottom of the widget on the sidebar.

The Player Speaks: The Statesman HS blog, The Varsity, talked with Brewer, who naturally, had good things to say about Texas Tech and head coach Tommy Tuberville:
"Coach (Tommy) Tuberville is a first-class guy, and so is the rest of the (Tech) staff," Brewer said. "Over this process I built a good relationship with them, and I’m really excited about the changes they’re making and how everything is going to work.
And Max Hall of the Statesman also had this from Brewer, who is relieved that the process is over with:
"I felt like the program is on the up and up, and for them to be on the up and up from where they’ve already gotten means a lot to me," Brewer said. "It’s a huge relief, a nice burden to have off my shoulders, and I’m ready to concentrate on spring ball."
The Statesman's Randy Riggs writes that the Texas Longhorns did offer Brewer a grayshirt this year, but Brewer decided to pass:
Texas already has three young quarterbacks on its roster, including starter Garrett Gilbert, Brewer's predecessor at Lake Travis. The Horns also have a commitment for 2011 from quarterback David Ash of Belton.
"It was a great opportunity," Brewer said of Texas' offer. "It's a great program, and I have a lot of friends who play there, and the coaches are all great guys.
"But Tech just felt like a better fit for me. It's nothing against Texas. I grew up watching them, and I'm still going to be a fan except when they play us."
There seems to be a bit of a discussion as to whether or not the Longhorns really wanted Brewer and I think the Longhorns probably wanted their cake and eat it too in that they Brewer did meet with UT offensive coordinator Greg Davis and BON's Ghost of Big Roy thought that he was pretty close to eventual QB commit David Ash out of Belton, but apparently the coaching staff like Ash a bit better. The Longhorns are also a bit quarterback heavy in that they signed Connor Wood and Case McCoy in the 2010 class along with Garrett Gilbert. To sum it up, I think Texas wanted Brewer, but Brewer was too good to accept a greyshirt and I don't think Brewer should have accepted a greyshirt. Brewer has the talent and ability to play just about anywhere and I'm sure that Longhorns wanted him (he is a UT legacy), but just not bad enough to take him over Ash.
I don't know if the term "stole" needs to be used when talking about any commit. I think, given the scenario above, that Brewer took the best offer on the table in Texas Tech. It's a long ways away from next February (signing day) and aside from the prospect of Texas Tech having a top-notch quarterback in play, that's really something to sell to other high school players. Talent breeds more talent and Brewer looks to be pretty good.
Scouting Report: We have highlight videos below and from what I can tell, he's got good mobility and a decent arm. I'm always a little suspicious about highlight videos because every player looks unbelievable, so I try to look at the little things on a player, and in Brewer's case, he does look comfortable throwing on the run and although he's more on the side of Sheffield in terms of size, he's not afraid to tuck the ball and run. Brewer's throwing motion is a little funny, but it's not awful. Brewer was the offense for Lake Travis and his statistics for 2009 are off the chart:
Passing: 256 completions and 367 attempts (69.7%) : 4,450 yards : 43 touchdowns : 7 interceptions
Rushing: 114 rushing attempts : 615 yards : 5.39 average : 23 touchdowns

Good arm and nice wheels
and already wears Scarlet and Black
Looks Great
His recruitment also shows that the SPD will continue the spread but I think our QB will start to run more now than under Leach.

Michael Brewer = Jacob Karam= Sticks
Both of these guys look to be cut from the same cloth. It will be interesting to see what happens with Young, who looks to be a little more Potts than Sticks. I wouldn’t be sad to see Young just pitch for our baseball Team, get drafted and live a happy life while our mobile quaterbacks rack up yards.

I think Young is much more like Graham Harrell than Sticks, Karam, or Brewer. The only time we’ve had a “mobile” qb in the spread, it was Cody Hodge… who was arguably our least effective starting qb.
I’m not down on mobile qb’s per se, but I don’t think mobility is necessary to rack up big yards in the spread… as demonstrated by Kingsbury, Symons, Cumbie, Harrell…
Hodges had +496 and -305 for a 191 net his senior year.
Symons was +340 and -197 for a 143 net his senior year.

The question
was about rushing yards…
Both were NCAA leaders in yards from LOS iirc.

Also remember that the year we had Hodges our OL was HORRIBLE. And that with a less mobile QB we probably would have had twice as many sacks. At least that is my recollection.
Also
Didn’t he get injured during the season? I remember him sitting for a drive or two during the Cotton Bowl for being injured. He was also carried to the locker room by linemen after the game was over, but I can’t remember if he got injured during the year or not.
by TheScarletandTheBlack on Mar 8, 2010 3:53 PM CST up reply actions
He went out for a drive in the 4th Q in the Cotton Bowl
Harrell came in and completed a deep fade down the left sideline (beautiful pass) but the drive stalled. The D stopped Bama and Hodges came back in and led them down the field for the game tying touchdown. Hodges had a pretty good year. Beat A&M, OU, & Nebraska and should have won the Cotton Bowl but finished 9-3. The Bama TD in the first quarter should have been called back and the field goal was ugly.
I’m cursed with a good memory and a penchant for being bitter.

I was at the Cotton Bowl that year too. I think Hodges ended up tearing his ACL during the game but came back in anyway since it was his last game. We tried that dang fade route all day and I think the one Harrell threw was the only time it worked during the game. That was a good game even though we lost.
Still don't believe
that field goal actually went through the uprights…….it’s a conspiracy.
He tore it bad during against aggie that year too.

I remember
I was there too and I thought it was torn cartilage in the ankle. But my memory isn’t that good, at least that is what my wife says.

I think Hodges is probably very underrated. The guy tore his ACL and then came back in for the tying drive in the cotton bowl. We won 9 games and should have had #10. The guy had no O line. He may have had one of the worst arms of the Leach era but he was a gamer. A big time gamer. And a winner. Mobile QB’s add a lot.
Should have had 11 if you ask me
OSU shouldn’t have been a loss (I think we were OSU’s only conference win that year…maybe they beat Baylor though) and then there’s the screw job in the Cotton Bowl.
Granted, had we won against OSU we might have seen a BCS game that year, but enough with the shoulds and mights.

You don't have to tell me about that field goal
I was sitting right in the middle of the up rights (two rows about the player enterence, this is how I remember Cody being carried off the field) in the endzone they kicked into.
But it shouldn’t have mattered since we got screwed earlier in the game on their TD.

I don't see Karam = Sheffield
I take him more like Harrell, wanting to make the pass, accurate, and reading, reading, reading…but more mobile in the pocket.
That view is from HS play, in Div1 college play, with the quicker pace of play, Karam may not look as mobile.

Highlight video on this kid is just sick....
Cannon arm, wheels…what’s not to like? I’m actually considering going to a Lake Travis football game this fall just to check out the future TTU QB.
What concerns me is the timing. We have a very large stable (or shed) chock full of quarterbacks right now, and if Scotty Young ends up being our next quarterback, how much eligibility will Brewer have left by the time he gets his turn? One season? Seems like a waste of talent….like having a whole plate of BBQ but only being able to eat the potato salad.
See, I do have a pessimisstic side (shout out to battledome)!
Between Scotty and Brewer I dont think that Scotty has much of a chance. I went to a Denton Ryan game and Scotty although accurate and talented is more of a GH type. Watching him I understood immedietly why Leach would be all over Young. I dont think the former captain would even be interested in such an atheletic guy as Brewer. You know all the running took away from his passing game.
he also offered former hs qb Eric Morris...
who never threw a pass at Tech… I’m just saying…
As someone who saw Morris play alot...
I always thought he was a better receiver than QB. Don’t forget, he played receiver his first two years in high school (if I remember correctly).
Then again, I also thought he was a better basketball player than football player (thank GOD he chose football).
Also, lets not forget, Tech’s best receiver ever played a little QB in HS.
by TheScarletandTheBlack on Mar 8, 2010 11:39 AM CST up reply actions
agreed...
so, just b/c Leach was interested in the kid, that doesn’t mean he intended for him to play qb
+1
but lets let him think he is until he signs.

Guys
This dude posted some ridiculous numbers at QB.
Yd:4450 Comp%: .698 TD:43 INT:7 QB Rating (NFL SCALE):142
He is going to be a QB
I have no doubt...
he’ll be a QB.
What I meant about Morris was that IMO receiver was his calling; not QB. Even if he did play QB his last two years of HS.
This kid looks great, and the dilema in choosing Young or this kid in a few years isn’t exactly bad news.
by TheScarletandTheBlack on Mar 8, 2010 12:34 PM CST up reply actions
What I mean to say is that
I think Leach may have been interested in the kid as a wr prospect, but HC TT will use him as a qb…
Disagree
I think Leach would have had him at QB too. This kid just looks too good at that spot to think he’d play anywhere else.
The thing about the guys I talked about earlier is that they weren’t so hot at throwing the ball in high school, this kid is.
by TheScarletandTheBlack on Mar 8, 2010 3:42 PM CST up reply actions
but what about Young?
you can’t think he’s better than Scotty… and if not, then he’ll only get one year as a starting qb.
If I were him, I’d play at whatever position got me on the field as a starter for the most games. He’s not going to have an NFL qb career at 6’0", so the only thing he needs to worry about is college playing time.
I don't know how H.S. kids
rationalize this sort of thing, but thing is that kids will sign with good programs if they look at a depth chart. UT was only offering him at QB and he had 4 QB’s in front of him. With 1 year to play, it’s better than not foreseeing any years to play. I think I read something somewhere that Sonny Cumbie offered Brewer during his junior year last year and I’d have to guess that if Cumbie was assigned to Brewer that Leach envisioned Brewer as a QB and QB only. Again, an assumption on my part, but if he’s good enough, he’ll play.
Go Raiders . . .
Double-T Nation
I'm not knocking Young at all
I think he’s a great QB too, but it just doesn’t make since to play a kid this talented at a non-native position.
by TheScarletandTheBlack on Mar 9, 2010 1:53 PM CST up reply actions
I wouldn’t sell Scotty short just yet. That’s an interesting thing about recruits, especially QB’s. As soon as the class is signed, this fanbase is ready to proclaim the next recruit as the savior of Tech football. Karam signs, “He’ll be starting in 2 years, Doege just isn’t any good.” Young signs, “He’s going to be the 4 year starter after sticks leaves, he’s AWESOME.” Brewer signs, “Young might as well transfer now, Brewer’s better.”
It’s silly, especially since none here know how good these players are for the Neal Brown offense, not until they’re on campus and going through practices, and especially not before we’ve even seen the offense.
+1
just damn glad to have them and being able to screw the evil empire. they can always become a receiver if QB doesn’t work…………..or safety/corner.
"There's going to be ups and downs but you have to enjoy the battle." Mike Leach
Both seem like great talents....
I’m just concerned about their careers overlapping….QB controversy?
I'm not concerned about overlapping
I would rather have the stable full, than to end up like tamu is so many times in the last 30 years, no one to play QB because the one they have is the savior and he ends up sucking. And look at them now, they have a great one in Sherrod Johnson and really no one else.

I would not look for controvery
The depth at qb is pretty special sure enough. Each guy who has signed has at least as much information availaable to him as we do…he knows who is ahead of him and he knows his own game. They sign anyway, so they see something, perhaps as little as opportunity to compete for the spot, and jump on it…the last two qb’s have committed extremely early to our experience in recruiting.
At the best, no one can predict what will happen, what opportunity lies ahead. They want to be at TTU, that is pretty significant in terms of what they see as opportunity vs what they risk in terms of playing time.
Sometimes a river boat can out run a pirate ship.
Why would a running back ever sign with USC?
You know going into it that they have 5 blue chips ahead of you. Here’s why; an elite athlete truly believes he is the best at what he does and believes he’ll beat out the other guys, it’s what makes them want the ball because they’re that confident. That’s why they continue to sign.
Give 'Em Hell Tech!!!!!
Let them become...
who they are supposed to be…leaders. We can argue which recruit will be the next Harrell, Symons, Kingsbury, etc. Let’s let them become the next…individual. Coaches (and fans) what their QB’s to have the cerebral game. Yes, we want a cannon for an arm, be mobile, accurate, etc. But I for one..need him to manage the game and play smart football. Surprisingly a lot of football players think they have it until they get to D1 football.
Let’s enjoy these kids now, watch them develop and root them on to success. Because in two years…there will be a better QB recruit and the debate will go on.
I still think Staubach was better than Morton.

We will be on the edge of our chairs looking to read you opinion of Brewer’s play this season.
Sometimes a river boat can out run a pirate ship.
The more I think about this
the more appealing it seems….I live pretty close to Lake Travis HS and after seeing the highlight video, think it would be pretty cool to see Brewer in action this year trying to make it 4 straight state titles (insane) for Lake Travis. I know my old Tech buddies here in Austin would be down…if some fellow Austin area DTNers are interested, we could even make an event of it. I could maybe even upload a little video.
Haven’t been to a high school football game since….I was in high school…is it unethical for a 31 year old to sneak a flask in his boot to a HS football game?
I'd like to join you
but I work evenings, so if Lake Travis has any games that aren’t at night, let me (us) know.
I watched a number of Karam's
games his senior year and then watched some of the play offs televized, it was great fun. HS football is still as much fun as it was when I was there…I did not need a flask to enjoy the game. It could lead to an uncomfortable evening…in my area there are people watching.

Just Curious
but how did Karam look?
(Ex: how were his throws, did he like the long ball, short ball, or both, was his scrambling good as advertised, etc.)
To answer your questions
great, yes, yes, yes, and very much so.

KWashburn took the words out of my mouth
regarding his play, pretty accurate for a hs qb, he made passes all over the field, including pretty deep. Moved in the pocket well, got out ahead of pressure if needed and could go North with good speed if needed but would not become physical.
What really caught my eye, and it has shown already at TTU, was is side line demeanor, he talked to anyone who approached him on the sideline with warmth and respect, encouraged anyone who came off the field…clearly a good personality type of guy to have on your team.
Sometimes a river boat can out run a pirate ship.
I'm North of SA
I will be interested to see a game as well. Maybe we will have to organize a few DTN nights to watch Lake Travis. Who lives the closest so we can organize and meet for eats before and/or after?

I'll try to put this together in the fall...
We could probably meet up somewhere close to get some eats/drinks…maybe the Oasis…great views of the lake and pretty close to LTHS. We should try to plan it around one of LT’s bigger games…see what Brewer is made of under pressure, and as a defending state champ, no less.

Yea and a QB that runs like Shannon Woods up the middle, that fits right in with Coach Browns empty backfield sets.
but at 6'0", he's the shortest qb we've had in fifteen years.
can he see over our OL’s? Will the ball get out high enough not to get swatted at the line by the giant Big 12 South DL’s?
I know Chase Daniels was short, but Mizzou was running a very different offense from ours.
I think if Brewer starts, we’ll be seeing a little bit of read option to emphasize his athleticism and mitigate his lack of height.
Seth...
Good work here. I really appreciate the highlight videos, your take on the grayshirt situation, and the use of the word “stole.” :)
It’s nice to see this kid in action.
Wait a minute. Hold on. I thought Leach was the only person in America who had the ability to decide if a QB was good or not. What’s happening here?? Wasn’t Tuberville supposed to turn Tech into three yards and a cloud of dust starting with his first full class
I kid, I kid.
I dunno, its

Is this a new trend in Tech QBs?
Are we seeing a slow transition to running the quarterback? Maybe not all the way Vince Young style, but more than Tech has done historically.
What we are seeing is a continuation of landing football players whose daddys played in other programs.
