Got this via E-mail today:

"Dear Michael:

This week, Chancellor Kent Hance and Texas Tech University President Guy Bailey shared an update on our progress toward achieving Tier One university status at Texas Tech University. Because you are one of our strongest supporters, we wanted to share this news with you."

I just wanted you all to know with whom you are blogging.

And for all you footdraggers out there, pick it up and do your part....

I haven’t gotten a SPAM from them. Of course, I give money directly to the Business School instead of the General Fund.

I was expecting the video to actually be informative but not so much.

I visited with a state legislator about this.

UT San Antonio and UT Dallas are highest up on the list of Texas school set to achieve Tier 1 status. Tech is lower down on the list. Always treated like the stepchild.

I don't see how

UTSA would ever get Tier 1 before us or UH. It’s a school people go to to transfer to better schools, do they have a very good retention rate anyways?

Whoa!

Don’t read the comment section. Lots of hate going on.

Hance needs to work on his interview skills. That was horrible.

I agree

The ridicule the UT faithful put forth against Texas Tech is ridiculous. Tech does not receive the huge amounts of money from the State of Texas like UT does, but have been able to build toward Tier-1 status. Tech will not be able to match UT’s income level for a long time, if ever. They have been the main university in Texas for a long time, and they, in their infinite hatefulness, do not want to share any of the state or federal money, especially with Tech. As an experiment, ask any UT student or alum about any number of schools, including Tech and you will find the animosity toward Tech is the highest of all. Why UT harbors so much hate for Tech, I don’t know, but it is very evident. It is also very sad for a supposedly Tier-1 school to be so negative when speaking about Tech and its attempt to get to Tier-1 status as well. All seven schools deserve it if they can meet the criteria, no matter how much UT and its exes don’t want that to happen. As Tech continues to improve in all areas, getting closer and closer to that Tier-1status, not only will they reap the rewards, but the State of Texas will also be rewarded Don’t be surprised to see in a couple of years, the recognition of Texas Tech as a Tier-1 University. A couple or three other will quickly follow suit, making Texas a viable contender with California for several Tier-1 programs and all that goes with that status.

2 For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the LORD endureth for ever. Praise ye the LORD.

The part that really irks me, and my saying it will irk some Texas trolls on here but....

we get what? 1/5 of the money from the state as UT? Now… look at some statistics. What in their school is statistically 5 times better than something we have here at Tech? Actually, you’ll be hard pressed to find much of anything where they even beat us by a decent margin at all. Just another case of Tech doing more with less but not getting recognition for it. Figure our law school has the highest bar passing percentage in the state (wouldnt that technically make us the best law program since its a standard test????), our nursing program is nationally renown, our engineering college is among the top in the nation, and I saw a few weeks ago a poll of some sort placing our Business College amongst the big boys, ahead of UT’s. So my question is this. Why do they even deserve that much money?

I'm all for Tech and I think the lack of equality in funding is terrible but..

Let’s not get carried away with the Texas vs Texas Tech comparisons or else will look stupid.

Tech law is great and is probably your best law school option if you want to practice in Texas as the school focuses on Texas law. However, Texas Law is known around the nation as one of the best

Rawls College has a long ways to go to catch up with McCombs

Medical School is great and is probably second best in the state to UT Southwestern

Tech needs to stop building facilities and start bringing in top level faculty. Faculty make a program, not buildings.

I’m not saying that we are better than UT at all of these things, but that we are much more comparable than we should be with our budget. I kind of think it all depends on how you view success of a college. Are you going to base it off of the students they allow into the program? Or on what the graduates do after they leave? The latter option is the only way to truly judge the quality of education students are receiving.

I am no lawyer, so I really dont know how that all works. Can UT grads take other state’s bar exams? If so, I want to see a comparison of passing rates with other states.

And Rawls has taken huge steps in recent years. From everything I have heard, its very comparable to McCombs these days. Employers are starting to see that the Tech grads can do just as much (i’m assuming without being so snobbish….), and hiring tons of them. Seems to me that the only way McCombs really beats the Rawls by a long shot is the prestige, which takes time.

Medical School-how much better is UT SW than us? And while we are just talking about state funding, how are we 2nd best when we arent funded as much?

This is my point. If we are competing as well as we are with the little bit of money that we are receiving, then we are obviously doing something right. We get more money, we can bring in more top level faculty, which gives our students that much better a chance for a great education. There is no reason to not destribute the land money equally amongst schools that can maintain a predetermined standard. As a matter of fact, its unfair and very hypocritical of our state’s government (mainly that yell leader), to preach about improving education then not supply the funding to make that happen.

Ok… im off my high horse now haha.

I don't play one on TV...

…but I’m a lawyer—a Baylor lawyer. Baylor and Tech historically have the best bar passage rates, that’s true. However, the ability to pass the bar exam does not translate into being the best lawyers. That’s kind of like saying the Big 12 CFB team with the most offensive yards should be crowned the conference champion. Real life doesn’t work that way. A better measure is the Average Starting Salaries for Texas Law School Graduates. Baylor and Tech turn out some great lawyers, but the big firms paying big dollars hire UT grads. (I don’t like it, either.)

by Shallowater on Mar 9, 2010 10:32 PM CST up reply actions

On that same note though....

just because the big firms hire more UT grads, doesn’t neccesarily make them better lawyers. We could have 100% bar passing rates, and have grads win 95% of every case they take on for the next 5 years, and they would still have that prestige. IMO that has nothing to do with the type of education they are getting.

This just in.....

Hance thought we were trying to achieve Pier 1 status….now that he knows it’s Tier 1, we are sure to achieve it.

That's easy.

Mow the lawn, have a beer, then take a nap in the hammock.

Perfect.

Of course you can skip mowing the lawn. I usually get longer naps if I mow the lawn first.

Yep. I’m married.
