Double-T Nation Daily Diatribe :: 03.09.10

Happy Birthday to Me and Captain Leach:  That's right, your intrepid blogger and the Captain both have birthdays today.  I always thought that this was some sort of karma that myself and Leach shared a birthday, but now I don't know what to make of it . . . just coincidence I guess.  I any event, I hope Leach has a great birthday and looks forwards to those tremendously fun depositions scheduled for Friday.

Still Needing Pitching:  LAJ's George Watson writes that although the team has improved (and I would agree that there is an upgrade in talent over two years ago) that this team still needs to find some pitching:

The only pitcher - and I mean ONLY pitcher - who has shown consistency on the mound in every single outing has been junior right-hander Bobby Doran. He's thrown three solid to outstanding games, including keeping Tech around in Saturday's 3-2 loss to Rice, and what does he have to show for it?

A record of 0-0. He's received three no-decisions in games Tech has gone 1-2 in, beating Michigan 4-2, losing to Washington State 6-3 and to Rice on Saturday.

Other than Doran, no pitcher has put together two solid outings.

Not Friday starter Chad Bettis, who has allowed 11 earned runs and 19 hits in 14 innings covering his last two starts.

Not supposed shut-down closer Jay Johnson, who sports an 0-2 record, a 6.10 ERA and who took the loss against Rice after opening the ninth with a walk and his fourth hit batter of the season that led to the eventual winning run.

Not Sunday starter Louis Head, who has thrown just 51/3 innings in his last two starts combined and giving up 10 earned runs and 11 hits in those two outings.

Watson's conclusion is that someone on the pitching staff needs to step up.  Good read.

Tough Spot:  DT's Mike Graham writes that due to this team's seven game losing streak, that it's put this team in a tough spot:

Okorie believes it was the result of a snowball effect.

"I just feel like we lost a couple, then a couple of players lost confidence in what they’re able to do," he said. "They got out of their row, they’re not doing what they normally do. I just feel like we have to take a step back and kind of talk to each other and just kind of figure out how we can get everybody back into their row."

Fortunately for the Red Raiders, their conference collapse only pushed them back to the No. 9 seed in the tournament where they will square off with their most familiar foe in No. 8-seeded Colorado at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in Kansas City, Mo.

However, the losing streak has cost the Red Raiders almost all hope of postseason play.

Big 12 Tournament Preview:  Basketball Prospectus' Kevin Pelton previews the Big 12 Tournament and had this to say about Texas Tech:

9. Texas Tech: The Red Raiders got off to a 9-0 start this season and even cracked the polls at one point. But Tech enters the Big 12 Tournament on a seven-game losing streak. Tech might still salvage an NIT bid with a win over Colorado, but the Buffaloes can say the same thing. Pat Knight's team was subpar on both ends of the floor and his genetic abhorrence of three-point shots quells any hopes of overcoming Tech's lack of top-shelf talent. The Red Raiders, especially junior John Roberson, actually shoot the deep ball pretty well. They just don't take enough of them.

Brewer Has Big Shoes to Fill:  LAJ's Don Williams talks with newest commit, Lake Travis QB Michael Brewer, who has family history with UT and with Lubbock.  Brewer, who intends on graduating in December of next year and will be on campus in the spring (much like Beau Carpenter did this year) talks about the new and <sarc>completely revamped</sarc> Texas Tech offense what type of quarterback he is:

Brewer said among the pluses to joining Tech is that Brown’s offense is similar to what he’s been running at Lake Travis.

"I’ve briefly seen just a little bit of film on some of the stuff they’re going to be running,’’ he said. "It’s a really fast-paced, no-huddle, hurry-up offense. Running the ball. Throwing the ball all around the field. Rolling out. Running the quarterback — not a lot, but just enough.’’

Brewer also seems well-suited for Brown’s offense in the latter regard. He carried the ball 114 times for 615 yards and 23 touchdowns last season.

"I’m a pass-first and then run-second guy,’’ he said. "But if necessary, I can run the ball.’’

Leach Scheduled for Depositions:  A short article from the LAJ regarding Leach's scheduled depositions on Friday, but the big news appears to be that Leach's attorneys are wanting the school records of Tommy Tuberville's children from Frenship I.S.D.  I've said it a number of times, I'm an attorney, but not a trial attorney, but this seems a bit desperate on Leach's attorneys standpoint, but I think when you make requests for things, you throw out the casting net and hope like hell that you pull in something. Someone from the DTN Law Review who is more than likely much more qualified than myself can chime in with their two cents.

Success and/or Recruiting Success Breeds Recruiting Success and/or Success:  Football Outsiders' Bill Connelly (who also writes for ESPN and Rock M Nation) has a really interesting post about how vital recruiting success is to success on the field.  I won't try to summarize this, but just direct you to go read the whole thing.

Happy B day Seth. Mine was Saturday the 6th. Lots of DTN’ers in the month of March. My kids baked me a TT (texas tech not tommy t.) cake so the day was great and I hope yours is as well.

Happy Sethday !

Birthdays are good, I like’em…for me, and for everyone. Enjoy every moment between now and the next they are precious.

I had to laugh at this line about men’s bb: that it’s put this team in a tough spot Somehow, losing 7 in a row puts a team in a tough spot !! ?? What kind of spot is it when a team loses two in a row ? Or has no depth ? Or does not recruit for depth ? I am so unhappy with men’s bb…..

Surpised, but enjoyed reading about Brewer famlily roots in Lubbock, that was interesting and endearing (so why did ol’ Charlie not play for the Red Raiders ?)

Running the quarterback — not a lot, but just enough.

LOL ! I am looking forward to seeing how much that might be.

but the big news appears to be that Leach’s attorneys are wanting the school records of Tommy Tuberville’s children from Frenship I.S.D.

Stuff like that is why I made a better engineer than I ever could an attorney, I don’t have the ability to just grab at straws, especially when it envolves people’s family, children, etal. My first thought was what could another man’s children, who just happens to be the guy hired to take the job from which you were fired, have to do with a law suit about what got you fired ? But then, as I said, I would not make a good attorney….

I glaced at the recuiting analysis, whoa, this boy has plenty of time on his hands !! Lots of statistical analysis to develop correlations to show what…something we already know ( I really have no basis for saying that, because I did not digest the analysis…so I am just ranting…LOL ! and I know it) Winning = coaching + recruiting; coaching = leadership + innovative application of knowledge + teaching; recruiting = body + mind + spirit (body is the physical ability and skill, mind is the smarts to learn and apply, spirit is the willingness to do it at a high level with great consistency)

Have a great day, everyone, especially you birthday folks !!

Happy Birthday, Seth!

Hope your having a great one.

My assumption is that Leach’s attorney’s are requesting the school records in an effort to determine if the kid’s were enrolled prior to Leach’s firing, so as to possibly prove that the administration had Leach’s firing/Tub’s hiring in mind the whole time. Seems like an extremely unlikely scenario if that is what they are hoping for, and if anything, I think it further casts Leach’s case in a negative light as this is just a really, really low, pathetic, classless, abhorrent move to make. Pretty much on par with most attorneys!!!! Happy Birthday, Seth!!!!

by 2001Raider on Mar 9, 2010 8:46 AM CST reply actions

That makes sense about the school records.

and underscores that I would not make a good detective either…although I should…similar to troubleshooting skills as an engineer, what could have caused this etc…machines are easier…

I will admit

I thought of this before but didnt want to say it out loud….

BUT…

What if…

This whole thing was a setup? The admin knew TT was lookin for a job and this whole thing was orchestrated in order to hustle the Captain out the door? It could explain a lot of the “WHY” in all of this

That would be a mess, and I offer the following:

1). If Leach’s camp want the judge to seriously consider this motion, they will have to disclose why they think the information is relevant. I don’t believe they would have made such a strange request if someone had not floated the “rumor”, or “reported” to the Leach camp that there may be an issue there. If the judge is going to consider it, it will come out what the Leach team thinks may be contained in the records. Otherwise, I don’t see how the judge will see these records are material.

2). If we recall, at the onset of the coaching search a leading canidate emerged in Art Briles. We know the BOR, Sowell, and at least Hance had an ongoing to desire to find a way to get him back to Tech. We know they went as far as to persue him to the point that it forced Baylor’s hand to offer him a lucrative contract extension. Given these facts, it seems unlikely some greater, long running conspiracy was in place to bring Tubs here all along. Not to mention the fact that Tubs himself interviewed for the Kansas job, and threw his hat in the ring for the South Florida gig as well. Those actions do not seem to indicate he already had a job lined up, and has his family on the move.

Agreed 100%

This is no doubt a desperation move, possibly even one to create media attention. Just by requesting this information, even if they know there is no basis to it, there will be a million conspiracy theorists pointing fingers and coming up with “Tech had this whole thing planned out since______.”

Unfortunately, I think this is a sign that the Leach camp has a very weak case. If you don’t have much in a very public case like this, your next best option is to try and sway public opinion….perception can sometimes trump substansive evidence. Its a stretch, but considering the very strong feelings Leach supporters have for the Captain/against admin….its a gamble worth taking if you don’t have much else.

by 2001Raider on Mar 9, 2010 10:43 AM CST up reply actions

Disagree

Frankly, I think most out there can’t imagine Hance and Myers are smart enough to pull this off. That was my exact thought was No way in hell are these guys strategic enough to pull off coordinating all of this behind the scenes.

From the standpoint of public opinion, I think this is not smart. Only because now people will want the Leach team to “prove” there was a reason to ask for the files from the ISD.

IMO, Leach has or at least had most of the public opinion in his favor. Seemed most thought there was no cause to fire him and he was owed money from Tech. Maybe I’m wrong, but I still feel like most people think the responsibility falls on the Tech law team to justify their decision to fire him. Of course, that’s all for outside the courtroom, inside the courtroom I’m sure there are different rules in place.

RE:

Agreed…not a smart strategy, but if you don’t have much else, use the public to your advantage. If you look at the comments below the LAJ story, you’ll already see this working. Even if there is no evidence that TT’s kids enrolled in school prior to the firing, it still gets people talking….case in point…..us, right now….mission accomplished!

Seemed most thought there was no cause to fire him and he was owed money from Tech. Maybe I’m wrong, but I still feel like most people think the responsibility falls on the Tech law team to justify their decision to fire him.

Completely agree with you here that Tech didn’t have legitimate cause to fire him and that the burden should lie on TTU to justify the firing. Unfortunately, I don’t think this is going to be the case. TTU is going claim player abuse as their cause and the Leach team is going to have the burden of showing that the 3 stooges had this planned out long before sweet baby james showed up to practice in designer shades and oversized jeans. As easy as it sounds to prove (because its true!), it will be very difficult to actually show.

by 2001Raider on Mar 9, 2010 11:09 AM CST up reply actions

i think we are on the same page

Unfortunately the three stooges may be able to get away with hiding as much as possible from the public. Burden of proof mostly on Leach’s team to prove their side. And until his team scores some points against Tech, the law team for Tech will sit back and play the quiet game.

Thoughts on school record requests

So my first thought was “why the hell would they want records on Tub’s kids?” and “what does Frenship ISD have to do with Leach’s case?”

So I’m not expert. But it would seem to me this would fall in the category of NOT gaining/keeping public support for your side. Didn’t Leach’s team ask for a jury for the civil trail? I don’t think the general public is going to like or appreciate Leach’s attny’s going after school records.

All that said, these folks are smarter than me on these matters (I hope anyway) so I gotta think they weighed the risks of poor public perception. Also tend to think there may be something there as it seems a pretty bold move.

But the timing of it all doesn’t add up. Leach was fired Dec 31. If you recall the timeline, this all kicked off closer to Dec 13 (I think). So you have basically a 2 week period where Tub’s would have been tipped that he would be hired. And that stated with enough conviction that he would enroll his kids in school??? Quite a stretch.
