Red Raider Gridiron :: Sheffield and Potts Injured, Not April Fool's Day Joke
This Is Not an April Fool's Day Joke: It's amazing what can happen in a day, but you know me, I can't help but be positive and I'll try to put my own spin on things. For me personally, work has been awful for the past week or so and part of what keeps me sane is thinking positive thoughts about our Red Raiders. I can't help it, and if you choose not to read any further, I completely understand. I should also note that I don't do April Fool's Day jokes. I'm not funny or original, just ask my wife.
Sheffield Undergoes Ankle Surgery, Potts Cuts Hand: This is obviously being reported everywhere (LAJ's Don Williams, DT's Adam Coleman and RRS.com's Aaron Dickens) and was the story yesterday. I certainly don't want to discount the significance of Sheffield's surgery, but just for a second, let's think about what Sheffield was able to do with very limited snaps as a third and fourth string backup . . . that's right, he only completed 74.3% of his passes for 1,219 yards, 14 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. Not bad for a guy that hardly got any repetitions in practice. If Texas Tech didn't have two senior quarterbacks who both understand the concepts of the offense they are running and were down to true freshmen quarterbacking the team, then I'd be worried. That's not the case and I really don't think that the time that Sheffield will miss to be a huge deal. I'd much rather him get that ankle right and I'd guess that the staff probably saw that he wasn't 100%, despite having a long time to heal and told him that if he's not 100% by the time that August practices start, that he probably wouldn't get a true look as a starter because they couldn't depend on him being healthy. With Sheffield having surgery, this hopefully gives him a clean slate in August.
And to top things off yesterday, QB Taylor Potts cut his hand, following through on a pass, on a helmet. At the very least, this looks to put Potts out for the rest of the week, which again seems like a fairly minor injury.
And I understand that Potts isn't everyone's favorite quarterback, but I'd like to ask everyone here at DTN to feel free to critique player, but do not attack players or call players names. You have every right to be a fan and like or dislike play on the field, but I'll warn and/or delete comments where players are called names. One of my long-standing rules is not to call other DTN users names, and I think this should be extended to players. They don't deserve to be attacked personally.
More after the jump, including a position switch for LB's Bird and Duncan and some excellent video.
Head coach Tommy Tuberville said that this puts the quarterback competition at a stand-still because of the Sheffield injury:
"It’s going to go into two-a-days anyway,’’ Tuberville said. "It wasn’t going to make a lot of difference. We were going to come out with a guy probably leading a little bit at the end. We won’t make any decision now in terms of that. We won’t have a depth chart with quarterback. The last one standing at the end of spring will be the so-called starter at the end of two-a-days. Looks like that’s how it’s going to be anyway.’’
OC Neal Brown feels bad for Sheffield:
"He’s been playing really well,’’ Brown said. "I hate it for us, but I really hate it for the kid, because he’d gotten consistently better every practice we had. He’s torn up about it. The thing is, it happened early. He’s going to miss nine practices, but he’s going to be back June 1 and be full go. We’re going to get the thing fixed the way it should be fixed and not rush him back.’’
First, this should be good news to everyone who is a fan of Sheffield starting, with the thought that with Tuberville wants to put the quarterback competition on hold due to Sheffield's injury. Second, with Potts getting a majority of the snaps for the rest of the spring, perhaps the silver lining is that OC Brown will have the opportunity to fully concentrate on getting Potts' mechanics better. Finally, with Sheffield out, this gives guys like QB Seth Doege and QB Jacob Karam an opportunity to get repetitions that they normally would not have received had both Sheffield and Potts not been injured. Again, OC Brown feels that both of these guys need work:
"Doege and Karam are going to both get some reps and to be honest with you, that’s a good thing," Tech offensive coordinator Neal Brown said. "They need it. They need some work. So we’ll roll them out there."
Again, I'm absolutely fine with all of this. Doege and Karam do need the extra repetitions and from reading TTUMAR's practice reports, both quarterbacks are rusty and need the additional work.
Notes, Notes, and More Notes: LAJ's Don Williams writes that Bront Bird has moved to inside linebacker and Brian Duncan to outside linebacker. This is an interesting move, one that probably won't get much discussion because of the quarterback issues. Here's Tuberville on the change:
"He’s got great acceleration,’’ Tuberville said. "I think in our blitz package and stuff like that he’s going to give us a guy that can put more pressure on the quarterback.’’
Regarding Bird, a 6-foot-3, 242-pound senior, Tuberville said he thinks the former Odessa Permian standout’s height helps him inside.
He envisions both linebackers benefiting from the switch.
"It’s a mental game, too, for an inside linebacker like Bront,’’ Tuberville said, "but he’s a senior. He can handle it.
"Brian Duncan, with him on the outside, he’s really going to help our speed game in terms of using more speed and getting another guy on the field that can really, really accelerate. His first three or four steps are really good.’’
And DC James Willis:
"He has natural pad level, natural body lean and he’s quick with his hands,’’ Willis said. " … It didn’t take long after watching a few reps and a few plays (to think) he may be better off there.’’
The flipflop of Bird and Duncan is the latest of several personnel moves the new defensive staff has made.
"With the few changes we made,’’ Willis said, "we’re much faster than we were day one.’’
I'd be interested in foot-race between Duncan and Bird and I'll really be interested to see how much faster the team is because of this move. It was thought that Bird was the more natural outside linebacker, but I do think that Duncan is quicker than Bird and it will be interesting to see how well Duncan can adjust to this move . . . Tuberville said that DT's David Neill, Pearlie Graves and Chris Perry all left practice with what seem to be very minor injuries . . . LG Lonnie Edwards returned to practice . . . DC Willis mentioned CB's D.J. Johnson and Jarvis Phillips as players that have impressed . . . Tuberville had this to say about WR Eric Ward:
"Our cornerbacks don’t want any part of him right now, especially when we’re in man coverage,’’ Tuberville said. The coach added that Ward is having to process a lot, not only in terms of learning the offense, but also in reading coverages on the run. "He’s been fun to watch,’’ Tuberville said. "He comes out to practice every day. He’s going to be a heck of a player for us.’’
. . . surely that quote makes everything better . . .
Leach to Reimburse Frenship I.S.D.: Fox34 is reporting that District Judge Sower ruled that the discovery requests made by Mike Leach were not relevant and has ordered that Leach reimburse Frenship I.S.D. for their legal expenses in complying with Leach's discovery request. The amount is only $1,970, which is much less than the $10,000 reported last week, and the judge had this to say in an opinion letter:
"The records furnished to the court by Frenship are not relevant to the issue at hand in substance or date and therefore, there is no need for a protective order and these documents will not be turned over to Leach."
"The records will not be made part of the record unless requested to be done so by Leach. If requested, the court will file the records under seal as part of the record."

I don't know, I've seen him in almost every video taken at practice....
Still hope his stat line is all 0’s at the end of the year.

He may be on the field
That does not mean he came to practice.

If mentioning his penchant for backfoot throwing
Violates the policy….there may be no comments left. Go back to the Baylor game…the way potts played Baylor stacks the line and makes him beat them. 12 more runs get you next to no yards and you are not stretching the field at all. I would feel better to think that Karam is plan b.

Key comment from Brown on Sheffield. . .
….“He’s going to miss 9 practices.”
Tubbs: “He’ll be ready for June 1st.”
We’ll be fine.

Thats good news...
I wasn’t that optimistic, but I’ll leave it to the experts. As for Karam, Leach had this guy as fourth string behind Doege, and from being at practice, nothing has changed in that regard. Something magical could happen I guess, but I would not expect to see him start anytime soon, and with Young on his heels, maybe ever. Karam is a foot shorter than everyone else, and has the weakest arm of them all.
"We have a running game at Tech......sometimes we throw short passes." -Mike Leach
Even when Sheffield returns....
The likelihood of him completing the season as the starter is grim. Not just because of this injury, but because his frame is just not built for a full season in the BIG XII. Like him or not, if you’re a TTU fan, you need to be a Taylor Potts supporter, because he WILL be behind center at some point this year.
Out of Karam, Doege and Potts, there is no question in my mind that Potts gives us the best chance to win. He understands the system, his problem has been execution, form and in-game decision making. These are correctable flaws, so lets just hope they can be addressed by September.
Sorry 2001raider...
I can hope in one hand and crap in the other. I know which one will fill up faster. If our playbook has the qb run option in most plays…this is a moot point. TP can’t run that scheme at all. I’ve got respect for the kid, and I would have punched kindle in the jewels after his hit on Nick. This is what I know (dangerous to talk in definitives) , TP at QB will lead to an uncomfortable first year for catfish and leach will look like Lombardi.

We've been lucky...actually kinda spoiled really, as Tech fans
in that we’ve always, over the course of the past decade, had a QB to step in and contribute immediately. Its been awesome, but it’s turned our fanbase into a bunch of spoiled, entitled brats.
So the first time we get a kid who can’t come in and lead the nation in passing, we throw him under the bus after one year. Don’t get me wrong, I’m one of those spoiled brats too…I called him a lot of names last year, none of which were Potts or Nick.
But I still firmly feel that in the depth chart….after Sticks….Potts gives us the best chance to win, so we need to support his growth.
He may only miss 9 practices but...
How many practices did it take to re-injure himself? 8? This after almost 3 months of rest. Not good. Our excellent receivers bailed out TP on many throws last year, reducing our YAC. He makes their job harder.
Throw first and ask questions later.
Yep.......espcially Britton, man he was something else.........
wish he had been somewhere else, he could not catch a cold.
"There's going to be ups and downs but you have to enjoy the battle." Mike Leach
but now he's actually fixing the problem with surgery,
not just waiting for it to go away, recovery should be a lesser concern this time around
If Stick remains healthy
Is Sticks injury prone? he came in and bailed out Potts and we all cheered and said we finally found a qb…then he gets hurt…he’s now hurt again…we all better hope #2 is ready to go in in the fall.
"doing what is right is easy…the problem is knowing what is right"
So you're calling Potts a #2?
That’s getting awfully close to the line about not calling players names.
John Hancock
I agree, but...
I believe that Sheffield’s frame and athletic ability protect him from being hammered while in the backfield. Not once did he hit hard, like Potts did several times, while he was back there. Granted, those defensive should never have been there in the first place, but you have to adapt and get on the move. Which, Sheffield was great at doing. Absolutely, Potts has the better arm, but has little ability to move around. Do you think the staff will actually start concentrating on his footwork and try to make him a little more difficult to hit? (Just like Harrell, where just a few steps would make defenders miss all day long!)
I expect...
Potts will have some serious help with his foot work once his hand heals. The biggest problem I see and most others have mentioned is his throwing off his back foot. That has to stop and these coaches know that causes interceptions. Also, Potts has arm strength but throws short a great deal. I’m amazed at his size and strength but lack of development. He has been in this system a long time now and should be the Pilot of this offense but has yet to find his mojo. I sincerely hope he gets to be a better player because I think SS will start in the fall only to find injury somewhere along the season. We need both these guys at their best.
"You've got to find your inner pirate" - Mike Leach
why can't he work on footwork now?
He doesn’t need to throw a ball to work on footwork. Just practice backup step forward and to through the throwing motion.
"But Oz never did give nothing to the Tin Man that he didn't, didn't already have" - Tin Man by America
Sounds much better than I thought
I feel like these coaches are really already in favor of Sheffield being the starter. If SS is ready by June 1st he’ll have plenty of time to work on this technique before September. I’m convinced Tuberville knows that SS is the better QB for this present day Tech offense and he doesn’t want to start his new job with a QB that plays well 50% of the time(Potts). I feel better about this after hearing Brown and Tuberville’s comments. Potts will make for a great back up should SS get injured in a game. Behind these 2 guys I’m not sure who stands out. I’m sure glad Tech has Young and Brewer in the furture.
"You've got to find your inner pirate" - Mike Leach
Having either QB run...
scares me a little. SS can pick up some serious yardage scrambling for us but I worry about him taking hits and putting extra stress on that ankle. As for Potts, the only running I want out of him is too hit the sideline if the pocket collapses. Maybe Zebbie Lethridge can come in as a consultant and show Potts how to scramble!!
"I thought happiness was Lubbock, Texas in my rearview mirror" Mac Davis
NO and more No
He would really then learn how to not throw the ball. Some complain about Potts but Lethridge played becasue we didn’t have anyone else. He sucked, with a 48 % completion rate. This was not Dykes best qb.

And Dillards paid 7 figures for that mistake and Zebbie threw like 1 int per season. Three things can happen and two of them are bad…

Zebbie might have been the worst we’ve had a Tech. The play calling was “close your eyes and throw it out there Zebbie”.

There were no plays in the Zebbie years
The ball got snapped to Zebbie & Zebbie did with it what Zebbie wanted to do with it.

My point exactly...
should have used sarcasm font. I think Zebbie ran for more yards than he threw.

Eric Ward
This confirms what I was thinking about Ward. He’s the biggest true receiver we have and he’s still fast enough to put on burners. He’s going to do a great job training our corners for Big 12 play. Remember, he was supposed to be one of OU’s next big time receiver, until we stole him.
Bold prediction for Ward- 1000 yards, 9 tds, minimum
and as a bonus, apparently he comes to practice every day.

Again, I don't think we stress this enough...
OU missed out because we’re the better school. We didn’t steal him per say, he made the right decision.

Opportunities
I always like when players get opportunities. Doege and Karam just got kicked up the depth chart. Now lets see what they can do. Sticks sure came out of nowhere.
"doing what is right is easy…the problem is knowing what is right"
I think a lot of Potts' problems as a QB
will disappear once y’all fix your offensive line
Poots took a lot of criticism last year when he played behind a sieve of an offensive line.
You may or may not take a lot of criticism for calling him Poots.....
Some of the problems will dissapear, but a lot can be corrected before hand. At least I think so anyway.

I still say if Potts had Harrell’s line that he would have been a monster last year.

Will the real backup QB stand up?
I was disappointed to Doege bobble the snap several times in practice and Saturday’s scrimage was a big downer if you thought Karam was going to push for a backup role. His arm strength wasnt near what the others had and was crisp with his reads.
I think this year will be okay with Potts or Sheffield and/or some combination. I have some big concerns for the 2011 season. Maybe the extra reps this Spring will help Karam and Doege to get more confident in executing the offense.
Wait and see.

Injury Status
The Red Raiders do seem to be suffering from the injury bug, but look at the bright side at least Adam James is still healthy and not suffering any lingering effects from the concussion, err the shed. I’m sorry I just couldn’t help myself with that comment. Maybe his retardation will flare up again and tubbs will ban him from all buildings related to the football program.
This year' qb issue might require a bold stroke
I hear much praise about brown and I guess we will see. I completely saw sticks as kk in leach’s first year bridging the coaching gap.

That's a great way to look at that.
And I agree with you. From the sound of things, Brown and Co are leaning towards Sticks as the starter, injury or not. But, like we’ve discussed and cussed before, he’s a little small. One good hit and we’ll know for sure. But then again, he never was plowed like Potts, so we can’t make an accurate judgement on that. the Nebraska game involved a freak accident of sorts. I remember watching thinking, that’s gotta sting, and how did that happen.
Could I possibly use anymore commas? Good Lord…..

Am I the only one who has noticed that Tuberville
calls Sheffield by his first name ’Steven" and Potts by his last name ?
Don’t know if it means anything…I find it curious, interestingly curious !!

The answer is obvious
Tubberville sees Sheffield as the starter and Potts and others fighting for #2 in the chart.
