Red Raider Gridiron :: Injuries Hit and Lewis Injured in 2009
The Hits Just Keep Coming: I promise, I don't sit somewhere behind a huge curtain where I generate news and topics and more news, it just happens.
Injuries to Defensive Line: KAMC's David Collier reports that both DT Colby Whitlock and DT Myles Wade will be out of the spring game. It appears that Wade's injury is an knee injury and Collier has video of Wade on crutches, but there's really no way to tell about the severity. DT's Jose Rodriguez has a bit more on Whitlock's injury, where he apparently hurt his jaw one day, came back to practice, and then it started to hurt. Here's head coach Tommy Tuberville:
"We lost Colby Whitlock the other day and he’s out," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said after Wednesday’s practice. "He’s having surgery (today) and we’re kind of beat up."
Snip.
"Hurt his jaw," Tuberville said. "A little worse than that. He didn’t even know it, he practiced with it. It happened during the scrimmage. Four days later, it starts hurting. It’s just one of those things. A little different."
Lewis Questions Treatment of 2009 Injury: LAJ's Don Williams writes that IR Detron Lewis questions how he was handled by the former staff after being injured in 2009, a hamstring injury. Here's Lewis (emphasis mine):
"I think I would have been better if I would have sat out,’’ the Red Raiders’ inside receiver said. "Texas was the next game; I wanted to play that (week). But all the other ones, when I was just limping around, wasn’t a hundred percent, was just jogging my routes … . As a coach or a head coach, you should want to sit one of your best players down to get healthy, but obviously that wasn’t the case, so I just kept playing.’’
Snip.
"It bothered me the whole season,’’ he said. "I mean, I never got to a hundred percent because I was asked to play every game. Somebody didn’t want me to sit out, so I just played the whole season being hurt or being a certain percentage besides a hundred. The bowl game is the best I felt probably the whole season besides the first game when I wasn’t hurt.’’
This is exactly why folks will never be able to move on from the Leach fiasco. Whether you like it or not, there are two distinct sides to this argument, and the most vocal of members of DTN do not side with the administration, but there is another side, and I guess you can throw Lewis into that mix, that although Leach recruited him and expected Lewis to replace Crabtree in production, it appears that he may have been ready for the Captain to leave. As mentioned above, it's issues like this that continues to pour salt on wounds that makes Texas Tech fans even more divisive. I don't know that there's anything that we can do about it and I'm guessing that the national news angle will be that with the Lewis injury, he had a history of ignoring injury problems. The only people that know the truth are the people in that locker room, and let's not forget that the player has a duty to properly disclose his injury. Lots of angles to take here and Lewis addresses the issue of the people outside of the lockeroom:
Asked whether he was irritated that Tech followers didn’t know specifics about what he was dealing with, Lewis said, "Yeah, but that’s the thing: Those are outsiders. They don’t know. I really don’t worry what other people have to say. People behind the walls know I was hurt the whole season. I was hurt, and that’s why I didn’t have the year I expected last year.’’
I also found IR coach Sonny Cumbie's comment on Lewis interesting as well:
"I think there’s a lot of potential, a lot of good things in his future, as long as he continues to work hard,’’ Cumbie said. "He’s been fairly coachable. He listens to some of the instruction that myself and coach (Neal) Brown (provide) … . It’s not a deal where we know everything. We’re just trying to help him. We’re trying to help him get better at the little things of running routes, and I think he can have a great senior season.’’
"Fairly coachable"? " . . . listens to some of the instruction . . . "? I'm going to do my best not to read too much into these comments, but Cumbie is a smart guy and I think that there's some coaching going on here in the press and although I do not doubt Lewis' injury it sounds as if Lewis may not be the most coachable or willing student. Someone tell me if I'm reading this incorrectly.
So much more exclusive and premium content, that's totally free, after the jump.
Defensive Backs Improving: DT's Adam Coleman writes that the defensive backs hope that the spring and summer practices allow them to continue to improve. Sophomore DB D.J. Johnson is excited:
"I think the pressure is probably going to be on those offenses," Johnson said. "The way we’re running it, it sets up a lot of failure for other offenses, so it’s going to be fun."
Incumbent starter S Cody Davis says that there are no starters:
"I think I put enough pressure on myself just to do good," he said. "You know, with the new staff, it’s a new slate. No starters are picked out, so I’m just going to try to get out on the field first, and then seeing what I can do with that."
And CB LeRon Moore knows that the defensive backs must be ready to play immediately:
"We’re all just going to continue working technique," he said. "Watching film, having an install every day. You just try to keep it fresh because you can’t be relearning when fall comes because in three games we’re going to play Texas.
We’ve got to come in it running, hitting the ground running in the fall."
Notes, Notes and More Notes: LAJ's Don Williams notebook says that redshirt freshman Derrick Mays is moving from wide receiver to inside receiver. Here's WR coach Tommy Mainord:
"For what we’re doing with our inside receivers, I think he’s going to fit us well there,’’ Mainord said Wednesday. "We don’t know yet. He’s gone over to (inside receivers coach) Sonny Cumbie’s meeting and is starting to approach that. So time will tell.’’
. . . I thought that Mays was supposed to be this burner on the outside and I wonder if this is a case where Mays may have the speed, but not the technique to play outside. I'm not sure about this move . . . the defense apparently had a pretty good day yesterday and here's Tuberville:
"Offensively, we didn’t execute as well, but I thought it had something to do with the defense,’’ Tuberville said. "Today’s the first day we kind of let the defense go back and forth from zone to man (coverage) and really not (let the offense) know what was going on. But both teams competed well.’’
Special Teams Progress: DMN's Mike Graham writes that special teams coach, Tommy Tuberville, is pleased with the progress of those guys we so rarely talk about:
"We're not too bad," he said. "I think our punters are doing well, we were a little worried earlier about our deep snapper, but our deep snappers have gotten much better. Our backup deep snapper got hurt and he didn't get a lot of work. Matt [Williams], our field goal kicker did well.
"There's a lot to special teams other than what we've worked on, but those are the things we wanted to get done in spring. We've got a lot of work to do in two-a-days."
Sounds like Tuberville likes Williams as the field goal kicker.
QB's Adjusting: ESPN's David Ubben writes that the younger quarterbacks are adjusting after the injuries to Taylor Potts and Steven Sheffield. Tuberville says that the senior quarterbacks will not be set back because of their injuries:
"It won’t set these guys back at all. They’re experienced and they understand it and they’ve been going to all the meetings and they’re at all the practices," Tuberville said. "I think it’s just going to set them back in their conditioning a little bit, but they’ll have a lot of extra work to do in June and July."
Tubs also talked about Seth Doege and Jacob Karam and their improving decision making:
"Quarterbacks have to understand the game and both are like coaches on the field, they’re eager to learn. Both have a lot more to learn than the two seniors, but I’ve been very impressed with their demeanor around the other players and their line of scrimmage communication skills, and their decision making," Tuberville said. "Both have really improved their decision making after the ball is snapped. You can’t teach that. You try to teach it, but it has to become natural for them."

Here’s hoping Whitlock and Wade have a full recovery during the summer. We need those guys.
Lewis took a big step down in my book. He could have said he fought a nagging injury all year without playing the blame game. Apparently he knows better than all the team’s medical staff, or is he just making excuses for his own shortcomings. I’ve never seen a situation where a bad attitude did anything but hinder a player on the field. Cumbers remarks seem to reinforce the notion that Lewis has an attitude problem.
I don’t think it was just the face paint that fueled all the reports of NFL scouts seeing Carter as being a potential troublemaker. Perhaps Detron should take note.

Guys play hurt all the time. Most of them want back in the game, regardless of the status of their injury. It is up to them to tell the staff if they can’t go or how serious the pain is.
I agree with TechFirst. He could have said it was bothering him and affected his play. But to imply that he was forced to play and totally abdicate responsibility sounds like he never left high school. Sure, coaches want their best guys on the field (the one’s who give the team the best chance of winning). It’s easy to say I would have been better if I was 100%. But the staff obviously thought he gave the team the best chance to win, even if the hamstring was nagging him. If he think s it was really dragging him down that much, he should have talked to and worked with the trainers to get better.
And I agree, Cumbie’s comment is pretty back-handed.
I'm getting very concerned about the number of injuries we are having.
These aren’t nicks and cuts, these are Spring ending (more severe?) injuries.
Detron needs to get in touch with his INNER PIRATE, gut it up and shit or get off the pot. Crabtree played hurt, Harrell played hurt, Sheffield and Potts played hurt. Detron is a puss needing to make excuses for lack of effort IMO.
Throwing Captain under the bus does not good for anyone.

WORD
I knew I missed Bennie Wylie before, but now I think I might REALLY miss him. Now, Coach Walker is great for our program and all, but as the old addage goes, Speed Kills. Coach Wylie focused practice drills on protective measures to keep healthy and avoid injuries. I love the emphasis on speed from Coach Walker, but it’s quite obvious that (almost) all injuries on the roster are lower extremity injuries. To me, this indicates poor protective measures. Yes, I want our team to be fast, but I also want our best players out on the field…
Perhaps, but . . .
it could also indicate how little focus was placed on the speed element of S&C training. And to be honest, aren’t most interior lineman injuries generally to the lower body? There were many things about Coach Wylie that I admire and respect; however, that doesn’t mean his methods or philosophies are superior to Coach Walker’s. Aside from player feedback, I truly don’t think a S&C coach can be evaluated until a couple of seasons have passed. I would rather push hard (and potentially incur some injuries) in spring, build up and strengthen in summer, and be slightly more protective in season. Hopefully, that is what we’re seeing.
Tubbs Mentioned
I think in was last week that the injuries were a result of our kids not having enough lower body conditioning. So guess you can play that both was. Not enough conditioning for the drills and practice that Tubbs is putting them through on the field. The actual adjustment of playing style warrants physical body changes, in the long run should be a good thing. I was really tired of watching Leaches teams come out flat in 09. But hey I watch a lot of SEC games, 6-9 can be really fun to watch and Im serious ! Its great to watch an efficient attacking defense.

I don't remember Crabtree making excuses
We knew he was injured from the A and M game in in ’08 yet instead of making excuses he just went out and won the biggest game in school history. Everyone has always tried to compare the two. I guess that is the difference. Is Detron pre-med? I thought maybe he had information that would overrule the training staff allowing him to play.
I found it interesting to learn in my School Law class that it is illegal to reveal information on a student/players health status without their consent. To the point that Mack Brown was threatend with his job after commenting on a hamstring pull Roy Williams had in a game while at ut. I have bever understood why anyone would comment on injuries anyway. All you do is give you opponents less to worry about.
Finally if all the players that were dinged up were told to sit out last year until the were completely healthy, The Goin’ Band would have to suit up.
exactly........spot on.........and if all injuries were disclosed as to
nature, severity, etc. we would know what bar Sissy got his ass kicked in.

Everytime I think about that guy and the nature of his injury and how it cost the Captain his job, I want to kick someone’s ass and show them what it means to be injured.
(Due to ESPN (if they read this) having the authority over Texas Tech to have me removed from the university, I must say that this is not a threat and only a total idiot would think it was.)
When I was in 8th grade I sustained a concussion by sling-shotting over my handle bars and landing head first in top gear on my bike. Now, I’m a big ol’ boy and it hurt like hell, but what did I do? I still went out to football practice, and even played a week later.

Leach mentioned the HPPA rules as well, wonder how so many get away with discussing injurys. Maybe they make the players sign away this right
by Gus Mitchem on Apr 15, 2010 10:56 AM CDT up reply actions
Shortly after HIPPA went into effect, there was mention in the media that players would have to sign releases for health-related information to be publicly released. Some programs have their athletes sign waivers in conjunction with their scholarship papers; probably just depends on the school’s general counsel. Here’s an article on it.

Hmm.... water gets a little murkier.
I think it is really odd that there quite a few players questioning the previous coaching staff (based on many interviews since the transition). I agree that some players can play hurt (depending on position) and be OK. Not sure if wide receiver is one of those. Yes, Crabtree did play hurt, but he was little more than a decoy (which the opposing teams realized) the final three games of his Tech career. Probably should make sure people that are hurt are well enough to play effectively… if not we have plenty of receivers. It will be interesting to see how Lewis does this year. (if his claims are true or not.) Stay tuned……

The weather folks have raised the chance of rain to 50% for the weekend. Looks like it might be getting a little humid in Lubbock as we speak.

We did a project on flooding in Lubbock when I was in school
I think it was a geology class. Anyway we spent time interviewing the city engineer & reviewing overhead photos of previous floods. The problem in Lubbock is that there is 0 grade to the landscape. So you can dig sewers but they won’t be able to send the water elsewhere without the land tilting in one direction or the other. The playa lakes are the natural drainage system, one fills & then it spills off to the next. So the city builds double height curbs on the streets that run between the playa lakes, which are mostly city parks. Lakeridge Country Club is built on a playa lake & a few years back it went under water for 6 months or so.
John Hancock
There has to be something they could do.
I have tons of ideas right now. I think they’re just too cheap to make it happen. That or their money is all spread out with marsha sharp, the loop, etc.
Re: Mays -
I think the move inside might be because he’s started to get lost a bit behind our other outside players: Torres and Franks on one side and Ward and Leong (the Leaper) on the other. I always thought his height and speed suited him more on the inside as it is.
Re: Wade -
He’ll be back, just twisted his knee. I think Tubs said last night that he’s looking at about 2 weeks out. Just enough time to miss the Spring game.
Hopefully we get the injury bug out of the way this spring.
Glad to hear Wade's isn't serious
"I’ve established a reputation for integrity. I have maintained those high standards" - Craig James
Don't Worry Too Much
I would not worry too much about the injuries. There are injuries every spring, the only difference is we have a coaching staff that is willing to let everyone know. I am sure the same things happened in years past but it was not procedure to make the injury public. As for the strength and condition coach, most of these injuries really have nothing to do with his program.
To comment on Detron's statements
I would regard him as "
one of your best playersNo offense to Detron, or the numbers he puts up. But I have to say that we will be relying on guys like Torres. I hope that he gets well and puts up good numbers for us, but please don’t claim yourself as one of our best players and not have any evidence of it.
Is it just me or have we heard more about injuries this year than any other year? I’m getting nervous that some of our key players are going to warming the bench this year nursing battle wounds. I guess like jehato said “we have a coaching staff that is willing to let everybody know.” I’m hoping for the best!
maybe that is the case, that "we are letting everyone know", but
when we “didn’t know” the players kept playing and were not sitting out.
"There's going to be ups and downs but you have to enjoy the battle." Mike Leach
True that...
I just hope they get it all out in the spring and we don’t continue this in the fall…or else it’s gonna be a long year.

Big XII ball is damn tough; you must play through pain and certain injuries. However, do you really want a player on a field with an injury that impedes his performance and jeopardizes the team? Especially when there is a skilled back-up? A receiver isn’t nearly as effective if plagued by a hamstring. An offensive lineman cannot hold his block if plagued by a bum knee. A QB cannot escape a LB blitz on one leg. I prefer to field the most capable athlete in these cases, which may not be the popular choice.
Oh I agree
but don’t say you want to play the biggest game of the year and then sit out the rest. That’s not fair. Put the healthy guys in and let them work their way to the top. If you’re only tough enough to play one game, then try out for the field goal unit. Am I being harsh, I feel like I’m being harsh!?
by LBKpiratefan on Apr 15, 2010 10:35 AM CDT up reply actions
I get where you’re coming from and I don’t think you’re being too harsh. That said, I certainly understand the extra and unique motivation a player may feel when facing Texas or A&M. I would be willing to bet that same motivation is seen on this site’s statistics: I would guess that hits/views/posts increase substantially during the UT and A&M weeks.
"This years spring training is way more intense"
I heard from a Tech player that is in spring training that Spring training is
way more intense and disciplined this year under tuberville.
Lots more conditioning and more intense practicing.
Under leach it was way more relaxed.
I see it as a good thing although the downfall is the injuries.
I hope fall practice doesn’t also create more injuries to key players.
question...
The injuries are disconcerting, but wasn’t it noted earlier in the off-season that Tuberville planned to push them hard so that the regular season seemed “easy” by comparison? Or am I misremembering and instead thinking of some other football program I read about. (which is possible, not being sarcastic with that) If Tuberville didn’t say that, then I’m officially suggesting it now. ;)
Re: Lewis, no offense intended Seth, but I think you highlighted the wrong part. I take note of:
“Texas was the next game; I wanted to play that (week). But all the other ones, when I was just limping around, wasn’t a hundred percent, was just jogging my routes…”
I read that as, I was hurt, but I WANTED to play in the big marquee game. Then the caoching staff “made” me play in the crap games after that. So Detron didn’t care or was just jogging in that UH game? Detron had 5 catches for 51 yards in that game, could he have had more if he’d “wanted to play”. Could he have made a few more yards each catch, maybe even a TD if he didn’t just jog his routes? If he was legitimately hurt, then he should not have played, sure, Crabtree played hurt, so did Harrell, but one can also argue Potts played in that game and shouldn’t have. But Potts got hurt IN the UT game, if Lewis said “put me in the game coach” for the UT game why should the coaching staff have held him out a week later?
Detron
I don’t buy it. This guy may have been hurt to some minor degree but his performance was way below his capability and I think this is widely known. I feel like he is making excuses and it’s great timing now that the old regime is gone. I saw him running full speed last season and dropping passes and missing routes. I do think he has what it takes but I think he missed his shot when Crabtree left. Torres and Ward will take over now and put forth the effort that our AIR RAID offense demands. This may seem a little harsh but I just hate it when players assume all the coach(es) are blind to injuries. I’m fairly sure they all knew how valueable Detron was in ‘09 and would not have jeopardised his health. In the end the Potts factor didn’t help his game either.

Agree with your point about the timing now that the old staff is gone. Pretty easy to talk and know that there ins’t anyone left to question your comments.
I don’t know the extent of his injury, but I do know he didn’t perform up to his potential.
But he’s kinda painted himself in to a corner. Now that he is “healthy”, he pretty much just raised everyone’s expectations on how he should perform next season. Not sure he realized he was doing that, but that is the result. If you say you were hindered last season, then we should see significant improvement this season. Right???

Detron
Attitude: My impression from Detron from practice, play, and his comments are that he is a “Dez Bryant” esque premadonna. Sunny is a straight shooting coach, and his subtle hints that Detron is less than compliant are not really a surprise.
Injury:Coaches are not gong to play an injuried player if his injury is such that he is a detriment to the team. Given the number of trainers and Docs associated with the team, conducting functional movement assesments on these injury players, I doubt seriously that a no-go reccomendation was made but ignored, on Detron or anyone else. If Detron should have sat out, it would have been less about a performance limiting injury, and more about a performance limiting attitude.
What does it say about the staff:IMO opinion it says the same thing I thought it said in December. I have contended there are more than two sides to this story. There are the the admin was right folks (small and creepy group), there are the “damn the admin, Leach can do no wrong folks”, and then you have the camp that disagrees with what the admin did, but doesn’t ignore that all of this did uncover a signifigant problems within the 2009 team. This is my camp at the moment. This unneccasary outburst by Detron says less about injury’s and says more about how the prior staff lost touch with what appears to be an increasing number of it’s players, both scrubs and stars alike. This only strengthens my opinion that if leach should have been on the hot seat, it had nothing to do with Adam James, and everything to do with what the hell was going on in that locker room in 2009.

i think I mentioned this a time or to in APR (after practice reports), but Mays seems to be mvoing along slower than the others. Lot’s of dropped balls, less playing time. Given that Mays seems to be quite a bit smaller (both height and weight) than guys like Leong and Ward, maybe the move is to be be taller or more physical on the outside, and smaller and more ellusive over the middle.

I think the Captain did a fair amount of that. Sonny’s comments are far more subtle than a desk on the practice field or fat little girlfriends.
Regarding the thought that Leach’s practices were less intense, could it be that he knew he didn’t have the depth to replace injured starters and saved what he had for the regular season? Doing more with less?
I fear a death spiral into the void of a new kind of political correctness when it comes to football injuries.
When does a football player ever feel 100%?
When Graham Harrell played against Oklahoma and Baylor with a broken hand, was ihe being heroic or foolish?
When Michael Crabtree played the last three games of the year on one leg, was he a fool for jeapordizing his NFL career or a courageous warrior for supporting his team?
When Potts got blind-sided against UT, was he displaying bravery for trying to get back onto the field, or were the trainers negligent for letting him return?
Who determines what is brave and what is foolish?
You?
Me?
This is not a black and white issue now, nor has it ever been.
It is reckless for us lay people or uninformed journalists to second guess these matters.
The trainers and medical professionals have a system of evaluating a players’ health. There are multiple signoffs. There is peer review designed to improve decision making. If this system needs to be improved, I am all for it. Players should be protected at all times.
Football is a violent sport fraught with risk. These players are adults. They know from the time they are in junior high exactly what type of risks they are taking.
I hate to single out players, because they are still such young men, but it seems that a certain number of our players should look at those who came before him, and reflect on what attributes made those players great.

Coal Miners
Go into the mine on the faith that that government agents, unions, and the mine owners have implemented systems to keep them safe. The problem is when they see the system has come into collusion to protect profits, they are faced with the prospect of continuing to work or lose their job.
They will continue to go down relying on their skills and the skills of their coworkers to keep them safe.
Recent events have shown that even the best systems of evaluation can be compromised.
If football truly is a metaphor for life then the same pressure for wins/profit must exist.
Players will be put into the position of playing hurt to keep their standing with in the system.
Before you condemning Detron Lewis you have to ask your self, is it possible that protecting million dollar contracts, and plum jobs at a big time D-1 program could lead to decisions that might not be in the players best interest?
If your going to call in to question Detron Lewis’ man hood, do at the spring game to his face not on a blog post, that is just not the Double T Nation way.

I always respect your point of view.
Let’s apply these arguments to what we saw last season.
Potts suffered a concussion. He had to sit out a couple of games. Sticks stepped in and played well. Still (to the dismay of some fans) Potts never lost his starting job. When Leach opted to go with Sticks or Doege ahead of Potts, it was because Potts was not playing particularly well, not due to his injury.
Similarly, Detron Lewis is not a player struggling to find playing time. He was presumed to be inheriting the Crabtree’s mantle as our go-to receiver.
Had Lewis sat out one or two games to recover from an injury, its not like he was at risk of losing his starting time to an Adam James type.
I’m not calling Detron Lewis’s manhood into question. Not at all. Lewis has all the physical tools to be a great player. I was surprised that he did not have the breakthrough last season I expected him to have.
Now, I understand a little better why he did not. But Lewis’s situation is not unique. All football players play hurt. He should also know better than anyone that jogging his routes is not a path to greatness.
Frankly, I find this business of the media trying to encourage current players to offer opinions about Leach and his coaching style exploitative and unseemly.
Nothing is easier than turning a player’s frustration with a coach into ‘evidence’ of some deeper crisis.
Do players get frustrated with their coaches? Routinely.
Does that suggest some deeper lockroom crisis? Hardly.
I’m glad Lewis is not satisfied with his performance last season. I hope he uses that as motivation to play great this year. Lewis would be better off channeling his frustration into his play, and should spend less time making excuses.
That’s what the great ones do.

I am with you 100% on this point.
Like Coach Tuberville said, issues like these are just part of life and most of the time truth ,or the closest thing to it, will be found some where in the middle. I just wanted the plausibility of Detron’s statements to be heard. I did not think you were questioning Detron’s man hood, but some people seem to be and that is rather unseemly.

I didn't question his manhood
I questioned his need to play the blame game against people who are not here to defend the accusation. We would all understand a nagging hamstring injury. The rest was a cheap shot.
And it doesn’t appear the reporter had to pry that out of him. Printing it is something else, but failing to report it is biased, isn’t it? Judgment call.

i'm with you on exploiting the players
Frankly, I think it is just lazy. It’s lazy for the journalist to write that story. And you can start to get a sense that they players could view criticism of the prior staff as loyalty to the new staff. I think it would be better for all concerned if they simply wouldn’t comment.
Heero TX had one of the best points. Now it could have been misstated, but Detron said he “wanted” to play the UT game. Which tells me he was less interested in the games after. That is an issue if he was actually not working as hard in the other games.
As I stated before, Detron has unintentionally raised expectations of coaches, teammates and fans simply by giving these quotes. If he’s 100%, then we should EXPECT significant improvement over last season. Right?

Much like the oft used Leach intro
that says about being accused of abusing said player, rather than just former head coach…

Coach I'm hurt. I can't play this week
That wasn’t so hard, now was it?
The funniest thing about the quote (paraphrased): “I was hurt for the Texas game, but I wanted to play in that. It was the games after that I wanted to rest.”
Dude, if you’re seriously injured, you don’t insist on playing the game nearest the time of injury & then kick back for the games you don’t care about. Are you hurt or aren’t you?
John Hancock
Injuries are disturbing
I think the injuries are a direct fallout of the level of hitting being allowed. I suppose Tubs can talk about conditioning but when aggressive folks are trying to impress new Coaches so they can get on the field things will happen. Well the new regime now gets to rehab 4-5 starters or potential starters all summer. As well as condition the living devil out of them. Just saying be careful what you ask for..

I think Lewis should be given a fair shake, even if he seems to have a lack of character. He has possibilities of having a very good, if not solid season. As to those injured, hopefully they will take it easy in the spring and heel up by summertime. How is the weather going to be in Lubbock? I heard rain

F*CK d. lewis
Hes okay “and wanted” to play texas, because it was texas…but the rest of the season, he shouldnt of
Well a lot of comments have been written
and I have not read them all…I am not able…just returned from a nice party on the block and an entertaining afternoon with my Glen McGregor drinking friend next door.
I read the piece about Lewis and did not try to analize or parse the words, he was injured and not playing to his best. He may be able to play much better next round. I look forward to seeing that happen, that is all.
Cripes who, at this point, with all the devisive reports and comment can tell who or what the Fall team will look like? If you think you can, I am almost willing to bet otherwise.
Lewis, for example, is a guy who has very good skills on offense…we have all seen him do very well at times. Then we see some kind of what-happened-with-him stuff…if an injury is a reasonable explanation, then that is good enough for me…I don’t care the the why’s or who’s or deeper ‘analysis’—non of which is based on other than speculation and inuendo.
I think Lewis can be a very good reciever at Y and one who can make impact during the season…that is all.

Contact and Injuries
If I recall, the majority of those here on DTN were 100% behind McNeil when he had the players making more contact and playing harder and faster than the previous DC. Now, it is said that the team is practicing and hitting harder than what even McNeil had them doing. There were plenty of injuries back then, there are plenty of injuries now. That happens when you practice and hit hard in practice and in games. The thing is that the injuries will heal by the time two-a-days roll around, with a lot of conditioning work going on until then, just like when McNeil was here. The same holds for the offense. They are hitting and playing harder, too. Some of the injuries are for those reasons, some are just weird (re: Whitlock and Sticks). All coaches tend to play their better players even if they have nagging injuries. That holds true in all sports, not just football. And not just college sports, either. Regardless of what an injury is or how it affects, or may affect, a player’s performance, when he or she is competing, each and every athlete must give all he/she has at all times, because one never knows when something great will happen just because a person guts it out and plays as hard as possible. No excuses. No pointing fingers. Do what you are trained to do. If unable to do that, one SHOULD be intelligent and humble enough to ask for a healing period of time, determined by the medical staff, not the head coach, player or family member. If all players for Tech can be healthy come September, the Red Raiders should field a very good team. We don’t know how good they will be, yet, but it will sure be a lot of fun to watch them play and to scream my lungs out as they represent my school, always hoping for the best and for no injuries, to Tech players or to any opponents; just good, solid, in-your-face competition. WRECK ’EM, TECH!

Lewis sounds like a whiner
Those bad men coaches made me play through pain wah wah wah!!!
Does he not realize that once conference play begins in earnest, NO ONE is 100% healthy? Everyone has nicks and cuts and bruises, but they play through them. Regardless of his injury, him complaining about not being 100% is just pathetic. Whining about the former coaching staff and blaming them for your failure to be productive is bush league, period.
you know Beergut...
I’m starting to agree with more and more that you say. You’re coming around man.
