Five Questions :: Discussing Position Changes

Five_questions_-_tiltshift__resize__medium

We wrap up the week the same way we started it.  I'm not working today and will be leaving to head to San Antonio (Castroville) to visit my grandmother Saturday and Sunday.  Because I have a problem, I'll probably check back in tomorrow morning, but I'm not making any promises.

1.  LAJ's Don Williams writes that defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson is experimenting quite a bit with players and there have been a number of position changes, including Will Ford to cornerback, Yahshua Williams to safety, and redshirt freshman Jarvis Phillips is getting lots of opportunities to play cornerback.  Robinson says that he wants even more depth to show up:

"That’s one area we have to improve in, because we run so many different personnel,’’ Robinson said. "Right now, number-wise, we don’t have what we’re looking for. Hopefully, those (incoming freshmen) will be able to help us immediately and we’ll be fine, but right now we have a lot of guys that’s able to play a lot of different positions.’’

Anyone want to help me figure out what Robinson is looking for?  Perhaps more depth at corner as there are probably more true safeties rather than cornerbacks and although we've talked about this before, of the freshmen from the 2010 class (Tre'Vante Porter, Urell Johnson, Brandon Smith, Russell Polk and Phillip Warren), which one do you think makes the biggest impract?

2.  CB LaRon Moore also had this to say about how the cornerbacks are going to play next year:

"We’re more aggressive in stopping the run,’’ Moore said, "and then we’re going to be more aggressive at the corner position — pressing a lot, not being six yards off (receivers). We’re going to try to cause turnovers, get pressure on the quarterback. We’re going to have a lot more blitzes this year.’’

Is this exactly what you've wanted to hear or are you concerned, especially after Robinson's quote from the first question?  Do you think that Texas Tech has the athletes to play press coverage with the cornerbacks?

3.  Yesterday, buried in yesterday's QB injury news, Brian Duncan moved to outside linebacker while Bront Bird moved to inside linebacker.  Is this a good move or a bad move (or is it too early to tell) and can we expect more movement through the rest of the spring with the linebackers?  Any predictions?

4.  Just curious, who do you think leads the team in touchdown receptions next year?

5.  According to the DT's Joeann Bon-Jorno, the Board of Regents voted to approve some improvements to football facilities:

The board approved renovation and improvement of the Football Training Facility and Practice fields. According to a presentation by Gerald Myers, the two existing natural-grass football practice fields will be replaced with two artificial turf fields and a running hill for strength and conditioning purposes.

The board also re-approved the Jones AT&T Stadium North End Zone expansion project, primarily pertaining to concessions and restrooms.

I think this is the written confirmation I've been waiting for regarding the practice fields.  Are you in favor of, disagree with or indifferent about replacing the practice fields with field-turf?  Also, who cannot wait until next year's spring game, when I can only hope that the public will have access to the running hill and then we can all go charging up that hill after having copious amounts of alcohol?

the talent question at CB may be moot

if you can find the personnel in your front seven to consistently get pressure on opposing QBs

remember, the front seven can make the secondary look good and vice versa when it comes to defense

if you have the right personnel in place in one area, it will make the personnel in the other area look better than they really are

Keep in mind that TT will have to replace

both Sharpe and Howard (combined for 22 sacks). Pressure on the QB is the biggest question mark heading into 2010.

If the lb’s and front 3 or 4 don’t pressure the opponents backfield, we have no real chance at db. Ford, incoming Porter and Johnson look good on paper, they and all the rest are ?s. The pressure to perform remains up front and the Coach’s defensive calls and how they are executed. Teams with strong offensive lines will test the db’s.

Indeed, but no one expected them, at this point last season, to replace the two before them that had garnered such acclaim as play making DE’s. Not saying Sharpe or Howard can be replaced, but we may again have more talent waiting than we realize.

I noticed

That Ford is 6-1, Jarvis Phillips is 6, Arian Waller 6, but Neboh is 5-11. And LaRon Moore is 5-9. It does seem like height is a factor for Corner. But we need speed at Corner to man up tight. I hope we have it but that is my concern. I almost say though gamble and man up and lose occasionally wether than give the cushion and have them go up and down the field.

1. He is looking for cover corners and doesn’t want people getting tired. Porter makes the biggest impact.

2. YES! This is exactly what I’ve wanted for years. Not every play (unless you have the athletes), but on 3rd and 4 at the 45 yard line, if you don’t press some in the big 12 they throw an out or slant and convert every time. Who cares if the corner gets beat a bit and they get 7 yards or 10 yards! But at least you have a chance to stop them! Previously we just gave them a first down every time. For instance NU in 2008. All those methodical drives were kept alive by short 3rd down passes while our corners were 10 yards off. That was so annoying. I like what I hear here.

3. I trust this staff on defense until proven wrong. The converse is true of offense.

4. Detron, b/c he is our most athletic WR and I want it to be him.

5. Well we knew Tubs raised the money for the practice fields within a few days of being here (awesome!), and we know he did it so we practice on the same surface as we play. So, I think its great! Restrooms and concessions in the new seating will be great. Right now its just a bunch of port a potties. I’m with you on the hill thing.

The Real Answers

2. More aggressive at stopping the run? As if we needed another reminder that all of these coaches are Big XII noobs. Either they don’t understand that everyone throws the football in the Big XII these days, or they don’t think we’ll be playing with a lead much this year… after all, there’s no point in running it unless you’re up by two scores.

4. I think the answer to this question depends on who starts. If Potts, then Leong. If Sheffield, then maybe Swindall or Lewis. I wouldn’t rule out Ward, though… I’m telling you he’s the deal.

by battledome on Apr 2, 2010 8:53 AM CDT reply actions

Are they noobs, or are you...

Last time I checked Tech has been a better pass defending team than a run defending team, something made glaringly obvious after the A&M game. Any improvement in this area would be welcome by all of us who were asking for this last fall, and should come in handy against teams like UT, NU, and OSU who are committed to running the ball. In case you haven’t read, UT is going under center this year.

"We have a running game at Tech......sometimes we throw short passes." -Mike Leach

by TTUMAR on Apr 2, 2010 9:32 AM CDT up reply actions

There are six teams in the Big XII South...

OSU and A&M rushed more than they passed last year… A&M finished with a losing record. OSU beat us and just edged us for second place in the division.

UT and OU were balanced. UT’s rush attempts were inflated because they were ahead late in many of their games. Their base offense is a passing offense. OU’s best passer got hurt… so they ran it more than usual. They, too, are a passing team.

Baylor and TTU are definitive pass-first offenses.

So, if your goal is to beat A&M and OSU… by all means focus on stopping the run. If your goal is to win the conference, you’ve got to play the pass to beat OU and UT. Like I said, this is not the SEC… noobs….

by battledome on Apr 2, 2010 1:45 PM CDT up reply actions

You just pointed out that.....

A&M and OSU, both teams who beat us in 2009, run more than pass. You go on to see that OU and UT are “balanced”, meaning they run as much as they pass, and we know that UT is going under center this year. So the only teams who are pass first are Tech and Bayrloy, and we don’t play ourselves.

So I will pose your question back to you…..if you want to gear your whole defense towards defending Baylor, feel free to dismiss our efforts to stop the run. If you want to be able to defend the rest of the conference, I suggest getting behind the staff’s run stop initiative.

"We have a running game at Tech......sometimes we throw short passes." -Mike Leach

by TTUMAR on Apr 2, 2010 1:49 PM CDT up reply actions

To add to that.

It seems like some people (cough battledome cough) see this run stopping initiative as meaning that we won’t be as strong against the pass, and I fail to see any connection in those two things.

by TheScarletandTheBlack on Apr 2, 2010 2:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Run Stuffing Sucks

Read my post TTUMAR:

I said that UT ran alot because they were ahead by at least two scores in garbage time during most of their games. They may be installing some I-formation sets, but make no mistake, they are a pass-first team.

OU passed less this year because Bradford was hurt. They, too, are a pass-first team.

So… the only run-first teams are A&M and OSU… but OSU beat us with the pass in 2007, didn’t they? And we beat ourselves against A&M… if our offense had been working the way it should have, we wouldn’t have had to stop the run. But as I remember, there were two early blown scoring opportunities thanks to Taylor Potts.

This brings me to my final point

Your offensive strategy and your defensive strategy have to be linked. When you’re throwing the football and putting up points in bunches, the other team will be forced to pass not run. The only time a “run stopping” defense is necessary is when you foresee your team (a) playing a lot of close games, (b) playing from behind a lot, or © running the ball on offense a lot.

So what is it? Does HCTT think that we’re going to be in a bunch of super-close games against a down Big XII next year? Does he think we suck enough to be playing from behind? Or does he plan on running quite a bit more? I think I’ve been clear about how I’d answer that question.

by battledome on Apr 2, 2010 8:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Also

Last I checked, that Alabama Defense that Willis is coming from did a pretty damn good job of shutting down UT’s offense in the BCS Championship.

Just going out on a limb here, but I think this guy might know a little bit about what he’s doing.

I don't think the Colt McCoy Doomsday Scenario makes it into the playbook.

Maybe the defense can take a QB out once or twice, but it’s hard to count on that happening every game.

Unless he brought the player from Bama with him, none of that really matters, does it?

He didn’t scheme the defense, he just coached inside linebackers.

Don’t get me wrong. I like the guy… I just don’t think “stopping the run” should be a major priority in the Big XII.

by battledome on Apr 2, 2010 8:08 PM CDT up reply actions

This conversation needs to cool

But, Willis title was Linebackers and Asst. Head Coach if I recall. So I think that he was in on the scheme for the NC game plus I think he probably learned a thing a or two from Saban who I think is one of the best coaches in the country. I am sorry but some other people are great HC’s that don’t have the last name Leach. Lastly, I think Tuberville will have a great influence on defensive philosophy. Even if you didn’t want him to be here, he has coached great championship style defenses at more than one stop and learned from someone who I think is one the best college and pro football coaches named Jimmy Johnson. If they think we need to stop the run then I agree. If I recall our most disappointing and embarrassing losses in 09 was tma, and my mother could have run qb draws for 20 yards all night. If your offense is not on, and it happened to Leach here at least once every year, your defense has to step up and stop the run until the offense can get going if it can. I must stop this ramble. The wine is hitting me.

I still disagree... and for the record...

this has nothing to do with Leach.

I just don’t think stopping the run is a big deal. A&M is the only team in the South that runs it consistently. OSU will throw it more this year.

I’ll trade a win at A&M for a chance to beat everyone else any day. And for the record, I still think last year’s loss to A&M was fluke. They were not a good team (6-7), and had we been playing out in front like we should have been sans two blown red zone opportunities early… we would have beaten the crap out of them like usual.

by battledome on Apr 3, 2010 8:36 AM CDT up reply actions

i had a feeling

that they were gonna win that game. They were due for a win because A&M,up until last season, haven’t won in lubbock since 1993. It was going to happen eventually. But its ok because were gonna stomp them down in college station this year..BELIEVE DAT.

But if we are to win the conference we will have to either stop both the run and pass on downs or turnovers. The way they talk it seems we are going after turnovers like bees to honey, which can scare people to mess up and be out on downs as well. I love turnovers. Nothing excites a team and its fans like turnovers. Think our ut game 2 years ago and Nebraska. Wreck Em!!!!!!

The run stopping thing is a bit confusing but I dont think they are noobs, you have to remember that Willis just coached the LB crew that took out McCoy and the Longhorns one of the worst running teams in the country.

Maybe the stop the run thing is a toughness gauge. But yes it does remind me of watching SEC on CBS at 2:30, but I love that almost as I love watching my Red Raiders. If you cant run and were maned up and you cant throw the slant, and a screen is basically a run then that doesnt leave too much.

You've got answers.....actually just opinions

1. Speed Speed and oh yeah more Speed + the depth to keep fresh legs in for 4 quarters
2. I love the idea of having an aggressive defense. With our offense the defenses gambles only have to pay off a few times a game to be affective
3. No clue
4. Eric Ward – Tommy Tubberville quote “none of the corners want anything to do with Eric Ward right now”
5. Tommy might not win any championships here but when he does leave here Texas Tech will have some of the best facilities in the country and he’ll do it in a shorter time than leach (because he fundraises). Thats not a knock on Leach but more of a bonus that Tubbs brings to the table. I like the idea of field turf practice surfaces. OU and Texas both practice on such surfaces and it hasn’t hurt their play.

I agree wtih oldschoolraider. When Leach got here there was no one to fund raise with… Well not no one but I believe we had about 30K a game before he got here. Tubs was handed a program on a huge upswing. A silver platter job if you ask me. To Tubs credit he is great at fundraising and has maximized his opportunities so far. I love the guy. But Leach built this program to what it is today. All of the current construction and facility upgrades, with the exception of the practice field and trophy cases are because of Leach. Lets just hope Tubs continues and not say Leach didn’t do his part.

Opinions are like ...

1. I believe he’s looking for bigger run stoppers and shut down coverage guys. But aren’t they all?

2. I have been frustrated for years with the soft coverage played in the middle of the field. I.e. from the 20 to the 20 yard lines. Every accurate QB has diced us over the last 5 years on short out routes and the like. Jamming guys at the LOS at least 50% of the time would seem to be the right mix. What you are seeing is the implementation of a new aggressive – attacking defense versus the bend but don’t break defense. It’s not vacuum by position because both schemes depend upon a very successful pass rush. Old style swarm was in the Jones right? (sarc.)

3.As far as position change, physical abilities and finding a guy who on this roster – acts the most like Lawrence Taylor – it’s definitely Brian Duncan. He is 240 pounds. He’s reasonably fast. He’s a better run shedder than anybody else’s run blocking backs we will face. So on the edge B Dunc is money. It’s downright exciting the potential disruption which might be inflicted on aTm, ut and OUs offenses.

4.That’s tough Seth- the guys who should shine are of course Swindal, Leong, Lewis and Torres. The scoring leader though is a funny combo of ability and mental toughness. My vote is one of the newcomers May or Ward followed closely by D. Lewis. The x factor is how the red zone offense is really designed to exploit. Because Leach liked a running back dive from a spread formation to create tacking blocking mismatches. There is a reason a guy like S Wood or Taureen Henderson scored a lot. The receivers have the best chance to score from about 20 yards out mainly because of the YAC mismatch of shifty receivers versus tired out Cornerbacks. So I’m just guessing that a fast guys like Zouzalac, Ward or Mays gets the most passes around 20 yards out. Then has the most opportunities to beat guys to the end zone.

5. There is a part of me that hates turf. But if it make for consistent practices then I’m all for it. That crap about running up the work hill. Somehow I think the little guys- kids – will dominate that action.

2.) Tired of getting nickeled and dime by the other teams. F*ck bending, lets break some sh*t!

3.) We knew this when we made to switch. Gotta find the right guys to play the right positions.

4.) Lewis, Torres, and….Ward…if he sees the field.

5.) Recruits like having nice things. Facilites go a long way. Just ask Okie State.

I am going to answer 1 & 2 together, because they are (some of the other opinions posted are similar). I see words about lots of different looks and packages and combinations of players on the field. I think the defense is going to do to the opposing offense what offenses have been doing with multiple looks…lots of looks with lots of different DB’s…complexity…perhaps in the form of simplicity to any one player…player A can do this, he does it well, put him in for that set of circumstances and then switch him out…do that in many forms and it gets complex even though one specific player may have a small set of tasks to do when he is in. Lots of bodies help keep the individuals fresher…that translates to quicker and faster. As a player works the system over time, he gains experience, he gets more assignments. It lets many players get on the field, takes advantage of every RS-FR to Senior, and allows the coaches to show recruits that playing time comes early. And yes, it will allow press coverage and the rest of the defense to play nine man ball. All the speed/hurry emphasized during practices contributes to developing the ability to switch quickly.

3. I thought about this one when I read it a couple of days ago and this is what I came up with. The reason given for moving Duncan outside is his first 3 or 4 steps are fast and he is a natural with maintaining pad level and looking like a DE + Bird is a senior, he can handle the change inside + the result is a faster team. Duncan is faster than Bird first 3 or 4 steps (else he would still be outside). All the previous words = in the middle Bird has a shorter distance to the qb, on the outside Duncan has more distance but can cover it quicker and is more natural with his pads.

4. Just curious, who do you think leads the team in touchdown receptions next year? Leong, his leaping ability gives him great advantage…he gets open, when he catches a football, it is his…and he catches anything close…or far.

5. No brainer, the board approved an improvement idea originated by the HC who also arranged the finances…duh ! What are they going to say ?

Field turf is showing up on every HS football field…I think a recruit who sees grass turf would rather see something at least as good as his HS field. Obviously the coaching staff likes it also.

I can only hope that the public will have access to the running hill and then we can all go charging up that hill after having copious amounts of alcohol?

LOL, I think perhaps typing got in the way of logic…copious amounts of alcohol always cancels any sense of need for access. moot point.

Had a conversation with Tubs today before practice, all he could say was

“I’m a very important man. People know me. My house smells of rich mahogany, I own many leatherbound books.”

Stopping the run is a brilliant way to keep up

Stopping the run is going to be very important! Look at the Big 12 South. With the exception of baylor and texas a&m, the quarterbacks are all relatively green. Taking away a running game, especially against OU and UT is going to be vitally important. If the quarterback doesn’t have the safety of their fullback being able to get a safe 4-5 yards every run, they are going to be a lot more on their toes, making more mistakes.

The team in the South with the best D-Line will win the South

1. Stop the run. I refuse to see A&M 2009 over again. Man coverage would be nice to see. I don’t care if they get burned deep once a game as long as we are tight off the line. That can screw up a lot of things for the offense when the routes are delayed, therefore allowing time for the front 7 to get in the backfield.

2. We have the athletes to play press coverage. They have done it before. Again, the “bend don’t break” policy hampered the ability to shoot the gap and wreck shop.

3. As far as I’m concerned, you can put Bird and Duncan wherever and they’re going to wreak havoc on the opposition. Gifted athletes. Solid. A little bit of a nasty streak would be nice.

4. I want to say Lewis but I’m not sure. I think Ward, Torres, Leong, Swindall, and Franks might be on top this year. There is also the possibility that we’ll run an unreal amount of swing passes to Jeffers. This discussion could go on for ever.

5. I’ll lead the charge.

I'm still upset that Title IX and all the funding rules

kept the athletic departement from helping the hockey team be an NCAA team

not that I imagine they would have if given the opportunity
