Recruiting on the High Plains :: TE Jace Amaro
The staff isn't wasting time as they secured commitment #8 from San Antonio MacArthur tight end Jace Amaro. That's the good news, the bad news is that I haven't been able to find much, if anything on Amaro. I think this changes as he starts his senior year, but for now, I have failed you.
The Measurables:

Position: TE

Ht: 6'5"
Wt: 237 lbs
Forty: 4.58
High School: MacArthur (San Antonio, TX)
The Player Speaks: Couldn't really find anything on Amaro, other than the fact that his father also played football for Texas Tech, which I did not know.
The Scouting Report: If we're simply judging Amaro on his measurables then he's off the charts. To find a guy that is this big and strong and still runs that fast is pretty amazing. The only thing that concerns me is the fact that Amaro doesn't appear to a huge part of the MacArthur offense (I haven't been able to find total receptions for his high school team, so maybe my assumption that Amaro isn't heavily involved is correct) as he caught 29 passes for 429 yards and 2 touchdowns as a junior and as a sophomore, he caught 25 passes for 266 yards and 3 touchdowns.
I have the same visions as you, the thought of a Chase Coffman, Martin Rucker, Jermaine Gresham, or Brandon Pettigrew having a positive impact on the offense. I don't know that I was every in favor of having a tight end in the offense, but I also think that having additional options, and having a couple of blocking tight ends that make it a bit easier to run the ball more effectively around the endzone is a good thing.
Video: No dice.
The 2011 Class: (What's funny is that I haven't had a space for tight ends before).

A little more on Jace Amaro
According to be recruited.com his career stats;
Career

Receptions 59
Receiving Yards 1059
Yards/Reception 17.9
Receiving Touchdowns 14
Longest Reception 74
According to maxprep.com he played in only 7 games his junior year
A little inside info.....not payed for of course
I went to MacArthur High School years ago where Jace is from. According to an old teammate that is the baseball coach there now this kid is the real deal but he got hurt his senior year. He has been die hard Tech since childhood as his dad once played at Tech and his mom is a Tech grad. However, he had a really good visit to A&M and was having second thoughts for a little bit.
The kid is also smart which explains the offer from Duke and I think he had another smart school in their too. His varsity coach, Van Fuschak, who was also the coach when I was there had been pushing Jace to committ before MacArthurs spring workouts which begin next week. Van wanted to make sure the kid didn’t lose any opportunities by waiting too long. I think had this kid waited you would have seen even more big offers than Tech and A&M.
Unrelated but sweet...
New Pics from the Trophy room Tubs is having put in. I thought it was very classy to have an entire section of all of Leach’s QBs.

I thought I read that here....
That Tubs had asked for the murals to be removed and replaced with these cases.

Similiar to what Leach did when he can in after Dykes....
From what I understand this “football history” area was re-modeled for Leach when he came to Tech to replace what Dykes had installed, and now Tubs has done the same.

We need more running backs named Byron. How did Leach never realize this?

It looks like a lot of things taking shape.
The areas most needed to be filled now look to be both lines and the DBs. That will take at least eight more schollies, probably ten more, bringing the total to 18. We could free up a spot if a certain baby left the program. Of course, just from some comments about the practices, some of the walk-ons are making some waves. All said, the future is shaping up fairly nice. A 9+ win season would really help, though, with future commits.

Here is my SWAG on 2010 as of today
SMU Lubbock – Win (but not as easy as past SMU games)
New Mexico Albuquerque – Win (could be a trap game. New Mexico fans really get rabid for Tech games)
Texas Lubbock – Would love a win, expect a loss
Iowa State Ames – Win
Baylor Dallas – Win
Oklahoma State Lubbock – Win
Colorado Boulder – Toss Up (we’ve dropped 4 straight to Colorado – I can’t understand why, but there it is)
Texas A&M College Station – Loss (I think our era of dominating the Aggies is coming to an end – expect home/home splits like we have with Okie State)
Missouri Lubbock – Toss Up (Missouri has had our number lately)
Oklahoma Norman – Loss
Weber State Lubbock – Win
Houston Lubbock – Win
So that is 7 to 9 wins, 3 to 5 losses, depending how we play against Colorado & Missouri.
John Hancock
If we get good qb play I think we can win the A&M and UT games. We almost beat UT last year and they lost alot of players this year. I just hope they can fix sticks or atleast pott’s back foot.
Maybe when they're both at the doctor
We can take the bad bone from SS’s foot and put it in Potts back foot. That way he’ll stop using it so much.

These are all different teams with different personel than before.
The only 2 toss-up’s I have are Texas and OU. Texas isn’t going to be easy, but we have the ability. Oklahoma, from the sound of it, is going to start Jones and do a lot of rebuilding. The ability to stuff the run in Norman would be mega helpful. That, and being rather nasty on the field. Not in a unsportsmanlike way, just taking peoples heads off, things of that nature. Man, I hate Oklahoma…..

Furthermore,
seeing as how I managed to NOT say what I intended……
CU + Dan Hawkins / Players X Colorado (not 1990’s)……carry the one = WIN
Mizzou + Gary Pinkel – Chase Coffman + Eating Boogers – Maclin = WIN
or to make this easy on everybody that isn’t Math Savy…..
Lubbock, TX + TTU + WR X (sideways 8) + QB (2) – Howard.Sharpe + Jeep + DTN Rabid Drunken Fans + Hungry Young Players (with something to prove) + The Jones = WIN IT ALL
and now I’m pumped the f*** up! Gonna go outside and throw s***!
ARRRRRRRRRRGGGHHHHHHHH!!

That Jones Stadium math worked right up to the kickoff of the Aggie game last year
Night game, hated rival, crowd was rocking. And the team didn’t feel like playing. So much for the sure thing home field advantage. And I’ll believe we can beat Missouri & Colorado as soon as we actually beat them. We haven’t in a very long time.
John Hancock
I actually remember the fans for the A&M game as somber...
We had just lost Sticks after the NE win, and I remember the mood being surprisingly hesitant, and for good reason. That eerie quiet turned out to be foreboding. Let’s not do that ever again.
"We have a running game at Tech......sometimes we throw short passes." -Mike Leach
my thoughts on the schedule...
SMU Lubbock – Win
New Mexico Albuquerque – Win
Texas Lubbock – Toss-up, I think this game depends ENTIRELY on how fired up we can get, both teams are “rebuilding”, home can be the edge for us like it was in 2008 if we’re amp’ed
Iowa State Ames – Win
Baylor Dallas – Win
Oklahoma State Lubbock – Win
Colorado Boulder – I say win, I agree with the sentiment, but this is a new regime on our end
Texas A&M College Station – Toss-up, I agree this will be risky, but “definite loss” I think is overly pessimistic, I think we won’t take this one for granted after last year
Missouri Lubbock – Toss Up, like CO I think new coach changes the “math” on this, but I still say toss-up since Mizzou has some talent. I think they beat us previously by disrupting Leach’s scheme, since Tubbs will gladly shift to the run I don’t think Mizzou has it as easy in terms of Defense
Oklahoma Norman – Loss (If we can win the toss-ups, I’d LOVE a win, but I “expect” this to be a loss)
Weber State Lubbock – Win
Houston Lubbock – Win
I see 11 wins POSSIBLE, altho unlikely (I think we lose at least one “random” game), 9-10 is certainly do-able, 8 or less will be a “bad” season IMO. The Texas game will be key, if we can get momentum off that we can certainly make a run this year, if we lose that then it’s probably a rebuilding year.
You are mad. With Sticks as qb, this is our best chance to win the big 12 we have ever had. SMU – win
NM – win big
UT – Tubs signature game since Auburn, win
ISU – win
Baylor – win
OSU – win big
CU – some reason we can’t win here but we do this year
A&M – toss up (i hate to say that, man i want to beat the aggies)
mizzou – win in lbk
OU – eh oh, could be a win or big loss…
weber- win
UH – if it matters its a win
I think if we can beat UT and hold off the bad loss to MU or CU then we just need OU and UT to not be undefeated (to everyone but themselves and us) like 2008. Then we can win the big 12! And I am very much a realist, but our team is stacked this year. And as long as sticks is at the helm we have a great shot to win every game. With Potts, my predictions are going to be a lot more pessimistic. Like CU and MU are losses. UT is a loss. OU is a big loss. UH is probably a loss. So we win about 7 with Potts.
hope we have a qb

Tubbervile is a defensive coach
You heard from me first, but with that size and speed and our new 3-4. If he adds 10-15 lbs, (redshirt a year) he would basically be an inch taller Brian Orakpo, ie: the ideal 3-4 OLB.
However, if he holds weight, but gains a little elusiveness and agility, he’d be an amazing over the middle threat, because he’d mismatch most anybody covering him
Tubbs D
With the new D that gives us an advantage against more traditional teams like A&M. Thats a good thing! If they want to run the ball we should be right there on every play. They might can pass but catching is another thing.
