Red Raider Gridiron :: Doege and Karam Take the Reins
I'm Back: Didn't get home until somewhat late last night so I'm going to need a day to get my feet back under me. I know that some of these articles have been linked other places here on DTN, but in an effort to get into work at a somewhat decent hour, no hat-tips this morning, but you know who you are.
When I Last Left: I can't be real sure, but to catch everyone up, per LAJ's Don Williams, QB's Steven Sheffield and Taylor Potts are both out for the spring, which leaves a majority of the snaps to fellow QB's Jacob Karam and Seth Doege. Friday's practice and scrimmage was closed to the public (it's been announced that it was closed for a week or so, well before the injuries) and here's Williams and head coach Tuberville on Friday night:
Tech’s workout and 70-play scrimmage Friday at Jones AT&T Stadium were closed to the public and the media. Tuberville said Doege played with the first team and Karam will go with the first team Monday.
"They’ll go with different groups each day and try to give them a fair opportunity to throw to different receivers, have different offensive lines and, of course, have a different defense coming at them, too,’’ Tuberville said. "It’s a little bit different with that first defense coming, with the speed, and the we do a little bit more blitzing with group one.’’
Also, Tuberville wants to acknowledge that if the performance warrants it, that Doege and Karam have an opportunity to put some pressure on Sheffield and Potts:
"These guys will fight for the job (in 2011), so it’s an advantage for them to have six or seven practices by themselves with the first team and second team,’’ Tuberville said. "They know going into two-a-days they’re going to be spectators. But you never know. One of these two guys might bounce out of the pack and put a little pressure on the seniors going into two-a-days.’’
Jeffers Develops: LAJ's Don Williams profiled RB Harrison Jeffers, who apparently had a rough first scrimmage, only to have a much better scrimmage on Friday night. Williams recounts Jeffers' on-again, off-again relationship with Leach, and Jeffers is still adjusting:
"It’s faster than what Leach ran,’’ Jeffers said. "It’s faster tempo and everybody’s moving around and everything’s going in chaos.’’
Jeffers said that the first week of workouts. Last week, Tuberville said coaches told him to go full speed anyway. Even if Jeffers did feel confused, coaches told him they’d rather have him making mistakes at a hundred percent effort than doing everything right at three-quarter speed.
"I’m just trying to get better and learn all the signals and learn my position from coach Scott,’’ Jeffers said. "I’m just learning everything new and how they run it — the faster tempo and everything else.’’
More Reps: DMN's Mike Graham writes that Tuberville thought the young quarterbacks did well on Friday:
"I'm really proud of the young quarterbacks," Tuberville said after the scrimmage. "They came out and threw the ball well, threw some touchdown passes. We were able to get them some work that otherwise they may not have seen."
Q&A With Tubs: FSWS's Brian Smith has a question and answer session with Tuberville and for those of you who have been playing along since the beginning, you've seen most of this before, but it's still a pretty good read (FYI - Smith is not the guy ranking the positions within the Big 12 South and failing miserably). Go check it out, here's a snippet:
How well is the team adjusting to the new 3-4 defensive scheme being implemented by defensive coordinator James Willis?
It’s good. Defense is defense, whether it’s a three-man front or a four-man front. I’ve coached as much four-man front in my life as I have three-man front. The reason we’re going to a three-man front here is because of the competition that we play against. In this league, we play a lot of passing teams. So if you have to have success in terms of nickel and dime defenses, then you have to have a lot of speed on the field. We’re basically taking a bigger defensive lineman out of the game, and inserting an outside linebacker like Brian Duncan who can play linebacker and defensive line. That way you can play against teams who do throw the ball down the field a bit more than they do in the SEC. We’re just kind of adjusting to what we think we’re going to need in terms of being able to stay up with the competition in the Big 12 conference. As we go through, we will play a lot of four-man front, but right now we’re sticking with a three-man front for talent purposes.

With the QBs out
The spring game is going to be a little different than what we expected.

agree
less exciting not seeing the 2-2010 QB’s battle it out. Defense should be worth watching.

Talk about an unfortunate
turn of events to begin your first season and tenure at a new program. Tubs must feel like the new guy at work who spills coffee on the boss on his first day.

I really don't think it bothers him
I am sure he would have preferred it not to happen, but if he is a truly successful coach and has hired liked minded assistants, they will look at this as a challenge and teaching oppurtunuity for the rest of the candidates. Just like in life, winners always think positive, push for excellence, and playing up to your full ability and a little more. Winners do not live in the “what if” world of negativity.

I would really like
to see Scotty Young come in here and have a great summer and fall session and take over. I know we would lose his redshirt, but from what we’re hearing, the playing field is pretty level. And honestly, if the young gun gives us a better chance to win than the other 4 guys, I say we give him a shot. Let him have four good years, break a few records, and take us to a championship. In the words of John Lennon, “you may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.”
Scotty Young won't see the field in 2010....
But given the lack of elite level ability in Doege and Karam, at least up to this point, I don’t think it’s impossible that we see Young start for 4 years starting in 2011.
"We have a running game at Tech......sometimes we throw short passes." -Mike Leach
I hope you're right...
I was never high on Doege. I like Karam, but I honestly thought that Leach had initially recruited him to play WR. He seems like a good leader, but can he throw the football well enough?
I hope Young doesn’t have to play this year… but the kid looks to be Graham Harrell part 2, and there’s a lot to like about that.
Indeed
I too want another multi-year starter. Young can be the next Graham. He’s got the skills to do it. This is the moment that Doege and Karam can seize to catapult themself into the starting job…..IF they can prove their worth in salt.

I would love to see where you read where
Leach recruited Karam to be a receiver. In all the things I’ve read, I’ve never run across this. If it’s on a premium board, then that’s probably where I missed it.
Go Raiders . . .

I see what you are saying and it makes some sense...
I prefer to see the two seniors do their thing and leave a legacy.
I also want both Doege and Karam to make impact in college football…I want their names in the headlines also.
I am looking more for a legacy for TTU as a producer of good to great college qb’s…even the ones who play but one season.

I agree hands down,
but I’m to a point where I’m tired of just having good quarterbacks with only 8-10 wins. I sure would like to have good producing quarterbacks and championship rings. It’s really hard to brag about quarterback legacy when none of them are making an imprint in the NCAA or the NFL, ya know?
I don’t know that a winning college qb need make impact in the NFL.
Every TTU qb in the past 10 years has made impact in the NCAA. Their stats have filled the record books with new pages.
To get to 8-10 wins in college football is very good football. The qb’s are and have been good enough to lead to that level and the inability of a team or a program to get beyond is well beyond the capacity of a qb to achieve…defense, special teams, wr’r, OL, RB’s all make incredible difference at this level of play….that is for teams that win at 8-10 game per year rates.
I think if the rest of the TTU teams had been to the level of ability as our qb’s the past 10 years, there would be a lot more hardware in our trophy cases…some really nice stuff !!

It's a word
if you use it on the Internet.
I read that somewhere online I think.

LOL, sorry if I made it look like a touche, didn't mean it like that...
The looks of the current building recruiting class is really interesting, the commits all look like very good football players. TTU is a name that people recognize nationally, the past 10 years have been good for the program and we are well poised to better that decade.
Having said that, I am worried about the coming season…the two qb’s are having a tough time getting onto the field…way too much like last season…yuk ! That plus the new stuff makes me worry for this season. But then when I look at last season’s w/l, I cannot see how it happened with all the qb issues….OL issues….locker room issues…jimminy !! Had they come together a little sooner, a little better what could have been ???

It's all good
I suppose my main concern with our seniors is that they are VERY accident prone. Doege scares me because of his reoccurring knee injuries, and Karam we haven’t seen really enough to gauge him. I just hope these off season surgeries for Potts and Sticks don’t wreck them for life (and for the upcoming season). I suppose that’s why I would like to see a guy like Young come in and really have a great HEALTHY start. It’s not that I don’t like the guys we have, but I sure don’t want to ride the Quarterback Carousel again. That spells D-I-S-A-S-T-E-R in my book
I just realized that
it reads like I think that Doege and Karam are “our seniors”…please know I’m not that incompetent. haha!
