Five Questions :: Concerned About the Quarterbacks

Five_questions_-_tiltshift__resize__medium

A couple of links this morning that really didn't warrant a DTN DD and/or RRG:  Perhaps my favorite non-sports read of the year, how a book publisher failed to get J.D. Salinger's final book "Hapworth 16, 1924" into print (Salinger may be my favorite writer of all time, so that's why I find this fascinating) . . . Dr. Saturday's Matt Hinton continues his series, Mandate for Change and a comparison of old Auburn statistics sounds awfully familiar . . . the AP's Betsey Blaney on Tubs adjusting to West Texas . . . and after the jump, a sportstacular NewsChannel 11Pete Christy has a two-part interview with Tuberville . . .

Now, onto the Five Questions:

1.  It occurred to me that I haven't mentioned the entire Saga of Mike Leach in quite some time (I asked about this in Blackbeard's FanShot on Sowell fighting Leach's request for disclosure).  I know that this is a result of time, but I just wanted to get a gauge on how everyone feels about this situation three months later.  Have you relented and given some money?  Are you holding steadfast until the administration resigns?  Just curious.

2.  On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the least worried and 10 being the most worried, how do you feel about both senior quarterbacks being injured during the spring and what are your expectations for Seth Doege and Jacob Karam for the spring game?

3.  Regarding the commitment of TE Jace Amaro, who appears to be, at least from his measurables, a hybrid of sorts.  He's big enough to be a tight end, especially on the collegiate level, but has enough speed to run past quite a few linebackers.  How do you feel about adding a tight end to the offense (does it make the offense better?) and does it make a difference if it's a tight end that has some pretty special athletic ability or would you be concerned if the tight end was a more traditional run-blocking tight end?

4.  Lay it on the line, who leads the team in interceptions this year?  Possible candidates:  LaRon Moore, Franklin Mitchem, Cody Davis, Jarvis Phillips, and Will Ford.

5. One more prediction.  In 2009, the offensive line gave up 2.38 sacks per game (87th in the nation), while in 2008, the offensive line gave up 1.00 sacks per game (5th in the nation). What's your prediction for sacks per game for the offensive line in 2010?

Aside:  Last but not least, I have a request/suggestion for everyone.  Last week, I decided that it would be best if we didn't call any players names, and technically that applies to one Mr. Adam James, and on some level, this also could also apply to the administration.  I'm really torn on all of this because the admin in general is not my favorite group of people, but I also don't want to have lots of exceptions to the few rules that I have on DTN.  I will make one request and ask that you follow it.  Well see how it goes.  I would ask that rather than call any of them by their real first names, use the tremendous Dr. Perry Cox as an example, and feel free to use any names listed here, here or here (you get the idea).  The more creative, the more it will make me giggle, and I think will make you giggle too in an otherwise miserable situation.  And yes, I still think it's a miserable situation, but I can only dwell on bad things for so long before I become depressed.  If I don't move on emotionally, I would no longer be married.  As an aside, I believe in karma and I have no doubt that karma will be an absolute biatch for some of these folks.

Follow the jump if you need a better explanation.

1. No money from our household. I refuse until something is done about all of this.

2. I’m right at a 5. I’m not worried about it as much as others. Sheffield came in last year colder than the beer in my fridge (damn cold). I think this is a great chance for Doege and Karam to get some reps and lots of practice.

3. I think a utility TE that can run, catch, and block is going to be a great thing for this team. It will help with the run game as well. Different looks from the offense and we’re bound to score some points.

4. I’m guessing Will Ford. But I think Cody Davis is going to win the award for taking people out of the game.

5. I’m at a loss. I’d rather make a prediction after the spring game so I can watch the o-line.

More later, but this kinda disturbs me,

“Though Tuberville says he’ll select his starter about two weeks before Tech’s opener against SMU on Sept. 5, he plans to play both quarterbacks next season.

What if?

Potts played outside the 30 and when we get inside the 30 Sticks comes in. That way we can take advantage of Potts arm when the field is long and Sticks agility inside the 30. If both play I would like that a lot better than alternating series. Of course, he could mean we have a quarterback controversy because no matter who is chosen as the starter, a group of fans will be upset.

THIS

is something I thought about ALL last year. This is similar to what Florida did with Tebow his Freshman year.

I’d say it worked for them (their first championship under Meyer) why can’t it work here?

by TheScarletandTheBlack on Apr 9, 2010 11:59 AM CDT up reply actions

I can't think of any passes over 20 yards last year where Potts didn't overthrow it

Most of his catchable balls were in the 5 to 20 yard range. And he underthrew the backfield screens again and again. The RB’s kept having to break their motion to come back to the ball. It absolutely killed YAC. If Sticks has a breath in his body, Stick needs to start.

I was just suggesting this

Because of the comment by Tuberville about both playing. What happens though is what happens and is his call. Their is a reason no one calls me to be a football coach.

Respectfully, as always......

I disagree. I was more concerned with the initial report, which was that once they made their mind up, they were going to stick with their guy. We have been down that road before, and given what we know about Taylor’s and Stick’s struggles, if either prove they are not up to the task, I don’t want to lose an other game or two because we were too stubborn to admit we made the same mistake twice. I like the idea of, we have two good QBs, we will have one starter, but that term will be used loosely QB play costs us games.

Three Stooges and SARR's moniker for the

three, Belltower Boys is also acceptable. I just want to eventually away from things like ass, pieces of shit, sum bitches, etc. I know that this will be incredibly difficult to enforce and I’m going to cut a tremendous amount of slack, especially considering that I think that most still have a lot of anger about the issue. It’s more of a suggestion than anything else and I thought that being creative would be a better outlet than outright cursing.

breif thoughts - so much to read, so liitle time, so far

1. No one would guess, but I am still a very bitter bastard when it comes to the administration. In particular the abject failure of our “beloved” AD and his coniving sidekick of a chancellor.
2. Very concerned about the QB injuries. With Katfish at the helm, I’d say a 5 on the scale, with the Captain, I’d give it a 2.5
3. The addition of a true behemoth athelete at TE will be most welcome, and give us a weapon much like OU has had in recent years.
4.&5. will reserve opinion until after Doc’s Tailgate, er spring game.

Now, as to the “Naming of the Shrew” (hat tip to LondonRaider), I will offer that in the future I will refer to aj and cj as “Nancy and Chrissy”, Geraldine works for me (hat tip to TechFirst), and I looked for hance, but did not find “douchebag” in any of the lists.

Ok I'm back

Spending on Tech:
We’re a house divided on this. My wife is militant about not giving a dime to Tech until Nancy, Sheila, and Mary are gone. I though DID pay my alumni dues, and I really want to go to the Spring game. I kind of felt ML had gotten us as far as he could and I’m excited that possibly HCTT can get us to the next level. Time has mellowed me to the situation because we drove to San Antonio with pro- Leach words in shoe polish on my truck and we all bought Team Leach shirts from a guy in the Dennys parking lot.

everyone told me that “everything changes,” but we had no idea how much! All things considered, we’re doing pretty good, learning as we go. But over the course of the past year…I definitely saw mood swings from my wife that made me want to check her ID to make shure I was still living with the same woman I married. 1. It’s still a big deal in my mind. I won’t give any money until Hance is gone. He and Myers are an embarrassment to anyone affiliated with Texas Tech. My hope is that Leach wins the lawsuit and has his name (somewhat) cleared. The only way he’ll be considered for another D1 job is to get this mess cleared up.

2. Qb injuries=more reasons to run the wishbone

3. Blackbeard’s OU reference is right on- A Gresham over the middle will be a good thing (especially when running veer down the line)

4. Davis

5. Less than 1 sack per game because of the wishbone

Never watched Scrubs but I try to stay away from the name calling anyway (except that one time I said asscorn). Is Beltway Boys namecalling? Will their newsletter be discontinued?

I agree with #3

I like a TE in our offense alot… if we treat him like a receiver who can block instead of a lineman who can catch.

I like Amaro because he gives us a big safety valve over the middle… and that helps Potts and Sheffield avoid having to take shots downfield.

My concern about adding TEs to the roster is that we’ll pick up blocking TEs that are only good for the running game… boooo blocking TEs

2. QBs will be a tricky situation, like an 8! Not only on performance but might be the first test ot Tommys skill as a HC
3. TEs are great, more flexibility, more options, more for opponents to defend agaisnt
4. Will Ford – our guys will pick off those noodle armed big twelve floaters, man up, get some leaps and snag those balls right out of the sky
5. OL sacks will be down because of the added speed and versitility

I'm not back and I don't know that I ever left

I will still give money directly to the Business School for scholarships and endowments but not the School general scholarship fund. Somehow I feel the Dean’s of the individual schools at the university are separate from the lack of mature leadership at the top (I am trying to be nice). I just do not want to cut off my nose to spite my face and destroy the educational value of Texas Tech. At the March Alumni Happy hour in SA I met an attorney who is active in his support of Texas Tech educaional expansion and has worked closely with Bailey. I found many postives in Bailey and may not like to include him the the “comedy group of 3”. I think the difference is Bailey is an educator, and Geraldine is (can’t say) and Hance is (sorry Seth and the the others of the legal profession) a politician lawyer who has the morals and ethics of a used car salesman or AAU basketball coach. I don’t know how is the best way to get rid of them, but I hate to not give money for school scholarships and Professor endowments which hurts the current and future students more than the administration. And remember, the continued level quality (whatever that might be) of the graduates from Texas Tech can help or hurt our (you and me) stature (careers) in the real world. As much as I like football, I don’t want it to affect the educational value of the University.

1. Paid dues to alumni association. However, I did make a donation pledge back in December (pre-Leach saga) that I have not followed up on. They have called me three times to ask me about it and all three times I’ve had conversations with student volunteers who agree that the administration screwed up royally and that they’re hearing a lot of the same “de-pledges” from alumni. But I have to admit that I’m starting to get torn on this as well because I agree 100% with everything cweber7377 wrote.

2. I was really worried about the QB situation at first but now I think I kind of like it because of the depth it will create, and perhaps, a quality improving competetion at the position for play time. I firmly believe that Sticks is the best option we have, but don’t think he’s durable enough to last all season. And if Potts struggles again, I can’t think of a better scenario for giving our #3 and #4 the reps they need to succeed when they do get called up.

3. Big fan of the TE…played it in high school (poorly, but still). I’ve been preaching for years that we could benefit from a Pettigrew-type TE that not only works like an extra OLman, but can wreak havoc over the middle on third down situations and red zone scenarios.

4. Wish I could say Jamar Wall (cue sentimental montage music). But I’d have to say LaRon Moore or Cody Davis.

5. The jury is out with the OL…in my opionion this is where we had the biggest loss from last year. I hope we’ll recover easily, but I think our sack allowance will increase, unfortunately. But I would add the disclaimer that Potts=more sacks, Sticks=less…and I’ll now change my name to Mr. Obvious.

by 2001Raider on Apr 9, 2010 9:01 AM CDT reply actions

1. Still holding out on $ for the school. I do give to the RRC in support of Tech athletics and will continue to do so.
2. I’d probably say about a 3 on being worried. Both these guys will be ready for fall football. Stick will start but it won’t be long before he gets injured again. His lack of weight will haunt him. Potts comes in and does a decent job. None of these guys are stars IMO but I do think we have enough talent in both of them combined to muster 9-10 wins.
3. I like the TE idea. Basically, a large more mobile OL that can catch the ball. I’m a huge Jason Witten fan of the Cowboys so I would love to see tech install that position more often.
4. LaRon Moore. Kid will be a force this season. I’m also adding Tre’ Porter as a huge player in the secondary who makes a lot of noise in 2010.
5. I’m going to say 2 sacks per game. We loose talent here but this O line will mature as the season moves along. I think the sacks come into effect more often when we see Potts as the QB rather than SS. I expect both these guys to see play time for reasons stated above. I also expect Tuberville will keep the ball on the ground more if Potts is at the QB spot in closer games.

Number one is where I'm stuck

1. As a newly married man, not even one year, my new wife gave me the go-ahead on our first large purchase: $1200 limit on season tickets… I know I shouldn’t, but SHE FREAKIN’ SAID YES! I love me some TTU football, but I’m not sure what to do.
2. I’m actually at about 3.5 right now. With the proper healing time, Stix can jump back without any loss in athleticism or ability. I’m more worried about Potts. I don’t think he has the ability to come back as sharp as he was when he left
3. I wouldn’t like to change up our offense for just one player, but maybe thats because sweet baby adaminna (thanks Seth) wasn’t able to cut it. So yes, granted, we haven’t utilized that postition before because we haven’t had the right kind of player.
4. LaRon Moore. With his rotation around positions I believe that gives him a lot of looks and chances at, pardon the expression, “free balls”. He looks like one of the most athletic guys on the field, he can break on a pass pretty dang quickly.
5. Depends on the QB. Potts has the distinct ability to stand still without any great footwork, which makes him an easy target. Sheffield is one slippery buggar. In all, I think we’ll keep it below 2.0

1)Being that I am a student, 1st off I would say that I was borderline heartbroken when leach was fired. I think the admin acted way too fast, and that once the lawsuit is all said and done, Cap’n Leach is going to get paid. I am moving on, and I am very excited about Catfish being at the ehlm of the pirateship now. The admin is still going to get my tuition money, regardless.

2)Ill give it a 3. I think Sticks will win the starting job, and being that he came out cold last year and wowed everyone, we will be fine. I think that the younger QB’s are getting some valuable reps and this will benefit the team in the longrun.

3)This gives us a speedy TE that can run over LB’s and also help out in run blocking. This is a very welcome edition. I will go as far as to say he starts by his sophmore year.

4) Laron will lead the team in pass breakups. Cody Davis will lead in beheading opposing receivers. Will Ford will lead in INT’s.

5) I think all the injuries that we piled up on the o-line last year that allowed some of the backups to get significant playing time will benefit us this year, although losing Carter is going to hurt pretty bad. Prediction: 1.7 sacks alloweed per game. (I reserve the right to change this after the spring game results.)

I don't want to just copy what I put in Blackbeard's Fanshot

1. I am not contributing any money. I am not wearing any gear, which severely limits my clothing selection.I am not going to go to any games. I don’t plan on showing any support to the university until these Nancy’s arre gone. I don’t know when that will be, and I hate it, but I am having my own personal Aaron Tippin moment with this. I don’t make a tremendous amount of money, but I have contributed to the Red Raider Club, the Alumni Association, and the college of Arts and Sciences every year since I graduated. I went to three games last year, and have been to at least one every year since I graduated, and I have a ton of Tech clothes, hats, mouse pad. I just feel like I have been slappedinn the face with my own wallet.

by Raider75 on Apr 9, 2010 9:54 AM CDT reply actions

1. Gave to the Red Raider Club and the Alum Association – but just the minimum amount. Refuse to support the Bus. School fund raising efforts, no particular reason. The administration better pray TT out does M. Leach.

2. At a 6.5 on the scale of worryediness ( a new word), reps equals execution. Don’t like the missing practices.

3. I think the offense Coach Neal runs demands a TE with some ball handling capability and its nice to have a big ugly grab a short pass for the first down every now and then.

4. Voting for Will Ford he’s already shown a propensity to get around the ball a couple of times in game situations. However the guy who should have a couple of interceptions is Cody Davis, the tipped pass drop in the end zone versus MSU being most notable. By scheme he should be able to have some shots at off target passes like Charbonnet and McBath in 08.

5. A coach like Matt Moore clearly would take a negative stat like 2 plus sacks per game and use it to motivate his squad or upgrade the play of the O line. I predict the Raider O line will make a significant improvement in sacks allowed. Ie under 1.5 per game by season end.

2. We often read comments negative to Doege because of his knee injuries in HS…I am much more concerned about Sheffield’s foot, very…what ever that comes to on a scale of 1-10. Potts’ injuries are different, more like dang look what happened this time ! I really want Potts to do well, I think it means a lot to the program…I want more for the team to do well. I am not really concerned with the individuals, I do not want to read qb controversy all season long, I want to read winning and 4 or 5 wr’s with 1000 + yards.

3. Regarding the commitment of TE Jace Amaro, Ha ! I remember (in my head I can still see it) the first time that I saw Andre Tillman catch a pass and take five giant steps…I was hooked on the tall, fast TE type. Olomua was the more prototypical TE and one who has made me dislike anyone whose last name starts with an unapostrophied O…a grudge that has served me well recently. A guy like Amaro, if he can play half as well as Tillman did, will make the Air Raid…well more raidish !!!

4. Lay it on the line, who leads the team in interceptions this year? LaRon Moore or Franklin Mitchem or both…back in the day they would be called M&M.

5. What’s your prediction for sacks per game for the offensive line in 2010? eggsakly Zero !

3-2???

Hmmm….I wonder if Sonny Dykes will have better luck with OC Tony Franklin than Tubs did?

I think,

1. Tortilla Pirate STILL hates it. Oops, no longer 3rd person Thursday. Although I am waiting to see what becomes of the lawsuit.

2. I am worried to the tune of a “4”. Thats an average for the two. Stache = 3. Sticks = 7. Simply because I dont think injuries should be ignored. I am STILL a ‘Stache supporter and I want him to succeed. Sticks’ injury prognosis isnt as clear as a mere flesh wound.

3. Jace Amaro?!??! Bristol Olomua!!!! I like it

4. Id love to see LaRon Moore do well like Wall did last year and McBath before that. I just think Will Ford is TOO good to be ignored and WILL challenge Moore. Mitchem and Davis, IMHO, are hitters and not necessarily ball hawks (interceptors)

5. TOP 20!!! THIS will go a long way to insure that whoever is our starting QB will have success. You simply CANNOT go from #5 to #87 and NOT have the kind of spike in interceptions and (cough cough) losses we had last year.

1. I will give no money to the University other than season football tickets and the applicable RRC donation that I have to make. I can’t not support Tubs and the team. However, all other calls for the business school, general fund, alumni association, etc I have told them they can call back when the Stooges are gone.

Agreed

I said the same thing verbatim. Exact words ‘’when Larry, Moe, & Curly pull their heads out for air and find the curb my wallet will open again.’’

Girl that called me laughed her ass off. Said she hears that alot now.

1. No money to Tech in general. $200 to the Red Raider Club to keep my seat options (through gritted teeth – They keep mailing me asking where the other $1800 is – elsewhere is my answer). Season ticket renewals are autocharging over the next few months. Southwest Airlines has their usual chunk of my change for game weekend travel between Dallas & Lubbock. So yes & no would be my answer.
2. 3, not very worried. Both hurt players have enough game experience. I suppose it depends on just how different Neal Brown’s offense is to run than Leach’s.
3. A tight end lined up on the strong side picking up anybody blitzing from the outside would be nice. And he can drift open in the middle if he is not needed as a blocker on that play.
4. No idea
5. 2.2, half the line is new again & the returning starters are returning from one of the sorryest lines in the last 10 years.

Name Calling Clarification

That’s individuals, right? In another post I called the Board of Regents “Neanderthals”. Since no individual was targeted, that one passes the smell test, right?

I also called our Governor an “Aggie”. Is that considered name-calling? I know I would be greatly offended if somebody used that slur on me.

1. Gave my normal annual contribution to the RRC in late Feb. As much as things may have been flubbed, I still want my school/team to have success in spite of what happened. That takes money. So consider it a selfish donation to satisfy my desire for Tech to be good.
2. Worried scale is about a five…but it’s usually a five anyway just because.
3. Bring on the TE! I love it. Adds a dimension to both the run and pass game. One more nuance for a DC to have to spend time game planning for – which takes away his time spent on planning for what we truly do best.
4. I’ll lead to Ford.
5. I think the new line will struggle at first, but will settle down. If we have an immobile QB like Potts under center then the sack numbers could be rough early in the season. But I would also think they would settle down by the end of the year. I’ll say overall average of 1.8 sacks per game. If Sheffield starts and is healthy, then I would say closer to 1.0 or 1.25.

1. I gave money, my loyalty is to TT.

2. Doege and Karam advances Tech’s qb depth this year (two seniors are injury prone) and advances these two’s experience in 2011.

3. I like Joe Carmical as tight end. Anyone slower and the offense changes.

4. Jarvis Phillips and Will Ford a strong second.

5. Split the difference at 1.7 sacks per game.

As to the name calling...

Could we also use Michael’s Scott Mnemonic Devices he uses to remember peoples as such:

“I have an amazing mnemonic device by which I have now memorized all of your names. Shirty. Mole. Lazy Eye. Mexico. Baldy. Sugar Boobs. Black Woman.”

—Michael Scott, addressing the employees of Dunder-Mifflin’s Utica branch.

Five questions...

1. My heart still aches for Coach Leach and the loss for our football program and university. I am SO pissed off at the bell tower boys and don’t think I’ll begin to feel real pride in Tech again until they are tossed out on their butts. I definitely support our team and new coaching staff, but, my heart just isn’t in it as much this year. Hate, hate, hate the way our admin handled this mess. Contributed to the alumni assoc for educational programs in part due to a direct appeal from Dr. Dean – it’s not their fault the admin did what they did.

Can’t get beyond question one…bitter much? YES!!
