Spring Discussion
Disclaimer: I'm not an expert on the opponent, but I try my best. If I have something wrong, please let me know and I'll correct or revise as necessary.
Key Losses: WR Emmanuel Sanders, RB Shawnbrey McNeal, LB Chase Kennemer, DB Rock Dennis and DB Bryan McCann.
Impact Offensive Player:: QB Kyle Padron: Last year, true freshman Kyle Padron was given the chance to start after not even playing a snap the first six games of the year. Once Padron got his shot, he didn't let go of the starting role which then forced Bo Levi Mitchell to transfer. By the end of the year, Padron completed 67.2% of his passes, averaged 9.6 yards per attempt and 159.92 yards per game. What gives Mustang fans hope is the fact that Padron finished his freshman year by whipping Nevada 45-10, throwing for 460 yards, completing 78% of his passes and throwing 2 touchdowns and no interceptions.
Impact Defensive Player:: FS Chris Banjo: Banjo is your leading returning tackler and will be a junior after a fairly successful sophomore season in 2009. Banjo will be expected help out a secondary that lost two starters (Dennis and McCann) and although Banjo hasn't shown the ability to intercept a lot of passes Banjo will be counted on to lead the defense.
Coach Speak: SMU head coach June Jones on not having a spring game:
So, here’s the funny thing. In a city obsessed with football, SMU coach June Jones got away with not even having an actual spring game."I think it’s overrated," the mad passer told the Dallas Morning News.
Instead, Jones had something akin to a practice in front of a modest crowd that witnesses say was in the hundreds.
Doesn’t bother Jones.
Nobody expects spring game shows from Jones’ teams and, by all accounts, most knew better than to show up. His biggest goal was to not get proven players hurt — he likes to talk about a spring injury that opened the door for Colt Brennan to become a star for him at Hawaii — and to get in work, sans contact.
Spring Chatter:
- DMN's Kevin Sherrington talked with head coach June Jones and Jones thinks that spring football is overrated. I suppose that Jones theory that spring practice is an opportunity for players to get injured (and no one knows that better than Red Raiders), but then wouldn't the theory then be, why practice at all because there's always a potential for injury.
- Sophomore linebacker Taylor Reed is being asked to take on a bigger leadership role as he replaces Chase Kennemer:
"He's in a position where he's got to think, but he's also in the position where he'll be the glory player in our defense, just like Kennemer was," Mason said. "I'm really impressed with him right now. He's farther ahead than I ever thought he'd get at this point. ... He's the whole package."
- Sophomore DE Margus Hunt is a discus throwing son of a gun, but in addition to playing defensive end last year, he also blocked 7, that's right, 7 kicks last year. And to top it off, last year was Hunt's first year of playing footbal.
- DMN's Kate Hairopoulos wrote after spring practices that the running back position is still a question and you may see a true freshman when the Mustangs travel to Lubbock to take on Texas Tech:
SMU will probably turn to incoming recruits Darryl Fields and Kevin Pope to take over for Shawnbrey McNeal, who left early to pursue a pro football career after becoming Jones' first collegiate 1,000-yard rusher. Questions remain at strong safety and cornerback. Depth, particularly on the lines, is a major concern. The Mustangs will have to remain healthy there. Only a handful of the incoming freshman class will redshirt.
vs. Texas Tech: This is the first game of the year for both teams and there's obviously quite a bit of optimism around the Hilltop. Jones has done a tremendous job of finally finding a quarterback that gets it in Padron. The Mustangs have more than a handful of players returning, but they must replace all-world receiver Emanuel Sanders and last year's leading rusher in Shawnbry McNeal. As stated above, it appears that the running back job may go to a true freshman, which is always a bit scary and Sanders' 98 catches for 1,339 yards and 7 touchdowns by far led the team. Those are some fairly big shoes to fill.
Defensively, I think the Mustangs are in a bit better shape, but this is still a bad defensive team. Not a lot of pressure on the quarterback or tackles for a loss, but did have 17 interceptions last year, which is very opportunistic for a defense that struggles in just about every other category. Turnovers is a tremendous equalizer, however, the Mustangs lose eight of those interceptions last year to graduation.
The Mustangs didn't have a very tough schedule last year, their best opponents being TCU and Houston, and their five losses were to @ Washgton St. (27-30); @ TCU (14-39); Navy (35-38); @ Houston (15-38); and @ Marshall (31-34). The key here is that of their five losses, four of them were on the road. That's the tough thing about building up a program is getting over that hump where a team can win games on the road. That's not always easy.

Hopefully that tool...
doesn’t announce any Tech games this year. I don’t think he legally can until the lawsuit’s over, and I think ESPN has placed a gag on him talking about Tech anyway. Everytime I see this guy’s face on ESPN, I wanna put my fist through the TV just to see if that reach through the TV technology I always thought would be cool as a kid actually worked in todays TV’s.

While "tool" has four letters
When did it become a 4 letter word? That’s the downside of getting old. The language you learned as a child is dying a slow death every day & being replaced by a new & strange language. Verbal obsolescence.

Would be higher if Sanders have stayed
he was a BURNER and can really stretch the field. I more worried about the performance of our team than the ponies.
P.S.
Screw you James. :)

Not worried
This is going to be a scoring fest for Tech against a weak defense to say the least. There is no reason Tech shouldn’t score 45+ points. In my opinion this is a great opportunity to test drive some new schemes offensively and defensively. This will be a fun game for the Tech offense to pad their numbers going into the season. i just hope they can come off this game preapred for New Mexico. Lets not forget last season and the Potts debut. Lastly, I agree with coach Jones on spring games being overrarted.

We win 49-14, Our D gets 5 sacks and 2 picks and Baron rushes for 120 yards !! What can I say, I am a optimist, it is a payday Friday, the sun is shining and I haven’t done a thing all morning work related !!!

I reserve the right to give us a 5 against SMU.

No D
SMU has absolutely ZERO defense and offense that is much less than Tech’s, with lower caliber athletes. I see Tech winning this by at least 40, maybe even 50 points. Prediction: Tech 65, SMU 13
TTpilk Psalm 117:
1 ¶ O praise the LORD, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people.
2 For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the LORD endureth for ever. Praise ye the LORD.
I worry ONLY because it’s a new staff with a totally new defense. I think we’ll have no issues scoring a ton…but will we have the right personnel to attack on defense?
And I remember North Dakota
And our new O-linemen last year.
"I’ve established a reputation for integrity. I have maintained those high standards" - Craig James
All I have to say is this:
SMU scored more points against Nevada in their bowl game than Tech did the last time they played Nevada in non-conference.
I wouldn’t let my guard down on SMU one bit. Thinking this is a weak defense is a big big mistake b/c their offense can be just as good as Tech when they want to. I would play this game like we play against UT or A&M. Give them hell.
Otherwise, this game may be just as embarrassing of a loss as the loss Tech had against A&M last year.
WSU beat them !!!
I live in Seattle and Washington State is absolutely horrendous and the joke of the PAC-10. Several Texas high schools could give them a run so saying they outscored Nevada compared to us last year is crazy talk.
A nationally televised game, season opener with the new staff and the JEEP on the sideline !! There is no way our guys come out flat..
"I thought happiness was Lubbock, Texas in my rearview mirror" Mac Davis
i agree that we can’t take them too lightly. but remember that it’s in the Jones, not on the road, which bodes well for Tech and bad for smu. that alone gives us a 2 TD advantage.
Plus, their offense is way less potent without their stud wr Sanders and their defense is horrible.
And if we were to lose, it would be MUCH more embarrassing than losing to aTm.
Funny thing is
That wiht Leach id worry about the team being unprepared mentally, with Tubbs and Willis I just worry that those Mustangs dont get hurt too bad while in Lubbock. Our men will be so fired up and ready to hit an opponent there will be some skull crushing
There is nothing about SMU that gives me concern.
If I have a concern, it is more about TTU being ready to play.
I honestly expect the Red Raiders to play the game to a level of performance and score differential that reflects a good Big12 team vs a reasonably good CUSA team.
I have respect for the current program at SMU and wish them the best…nonetheless, this game should show strong for TTU.

SMEW
Tech has a stronger offense and defense. Tech has better overall athletes. Tech is at home with new coaches who have something to prove. SMU will make some plays. Texas Tech will win comfortably.
Never.....
Underestimate June Jones, he took the Rainbow Warriors; (that is a cool team name) a ragtag bunch of criminals, single digit IQ Neanderthals, and a few good football players and turned them into a fine team. This despite playing the worst road game schedule in D-I along with athletic facilities that would not cut it at a 1-A high school in Texas.
I don’t expect a loss for Tech, but SMU has the right coach.
"What have you been reading, the gospel according to St. Bastard?"
Eddie Izzard
could be a very dangerous game for Tech
SMU returns their starting QB, who played very well down the stretch, in Kyle Padron, and a team that is comfortable in their offensive scheme in the third year under June Jones, and they’ll be facing a defense trying to figure things out in a new scheme under Willis. That is the recipe for some headaches for Tech fans.
Y’all say they have no defense, and while their defense isn’t great, they did hold Nevada, one of the nations leaders in rushing offense, to only 137 yards rushing in the bowl game.
Make no mistake, SMU will be coming to Lubbock intent on pulling off an upset, and they’re coming at a good time, with Tech installing new schemes and a new coaching staff.
Your biggest advantage is that the game is in Lubbock. I think Tech will win a close one, but an upset by SMU wouldn’t shock me.
another aggie beatdown by tech in kyle field wouldnt shock me either

well
wrench’s comment was posted solely to get a reaction
on my blog, I regard such comments as trolling; however, this is (onstensibly) a Red Raider trolling on a Red Raider blog trying to get a reaction from an Aggie. How do you handle a user who is part of the fanbase your blog represents trying to troll fans from another school?
I don’t think I’ve had that situation happen on my blog yet.
So are you wanting to
out troll the troll?
It remains, you have opportunity to be much more magnanimus than demonstrated by the above. Step up Aggie !!

no
not wanting to ‘out the troll’, just responding to Seth’s comment that I don’t like it when people do this on my blog
I haven’t had someone try to troll other readers from other schools on my blog yet.
As far as being magnanimous, I’ve tried that for a while now, but after a while all of the claims that Tech will whip us at Kyle this year get old, and eventually I get tired of it and I respond in kind.
I think from now on I’ll just make, “I’m sorry, I can’t hear you, 52-30 is blaring too loudly in my ear” my stock answer, and move on.
It's an effing Texas Tech blog.
God forbid fans of their school be optimistic or talking about another school. That never happens anywhere else?

I don't have a problem with them being optimistic
just like I don’t think my reply to him was out of line; it was in the same spirit as his original comment.
If I were to try and defend every
comment that was somewhat derogatory to Texas Tech then I’d have to quit my job.

I just had a horrible thought
What if our football team plays with the same methods used by the baseball team? Lose, Win, Win, Lose, Win, Win, etc, etc,……..or something like that….y—u—-k……
OK, OK….just kidding. I think, realistically, that the football team should be fine, coming out with a strong desire to prove this is a great team despite all the post & off-season turmoil and attention. In that instance, they will be very difficult to beat, including against a longhorn team already being touted as a title contender even though they must fill some huge shoes with some relatively untried bodies. My gut, despite the horrible thought, says the Red Raiders will do no worse than 3rd in the South, with a very good and realistic chance to win it and the Big-12 titles, setting up a BCS bowl of some sort. I remain optimistic, as I have for the last 40 years or so, no matter what the “experts” say. GO TECH! WRECK ’EM!

how about instead of ranking how worry or concerned we are with a opposing team. How about we rank how confident we are? I think its a better attitude to have, right?
