Five Questions :: Offensive Line Pondering

Five_questions_-_tiltshift__resize__medium

1.  Now that you've been able to opine or observe the various thoughts regarding the possibility of conference realignment, has your opinion about where Texas Tech will land changed or has your opinion remained the same?

2.  When Tuberville arrived at Texas Tech, the offensive line generally lost a bit of weight, sometimes 15 to 30 pounds per player.  Do you think this is a good thing?

3.  Last year, I think that Texas Tech fans underestimated the loss along the offensive line and this year, the line will be replacing both Brandon Carter and Marlon WinnChris Olson, Blake Emert, Deveric Gallington, Mickey Okafor or LaAdrian Waddle, are mostly unproven (except for Olson, who may play at center or guard or tackle).  Is this your biggest offensive concern going into the 2010 season?

4.  Quick prediction and related to question #3:  who do you think starts at right guard and right tackle?

5.  I've written my preseason prospectus about the SMU Mustangs and some of you expressed the thought that the biggest question mark is that the 2010 version of Texas Tech is a complete unknown, both offensive and defensively.  Aside from what we don't know about Texas Tech, what concerns you most about the Mustangs?

seth, I posted this under the smu mustangs ranking, but i dunno if you saw it.

how about instead of ranking how worry or concerned we are with a opposing team. How about we rank how confident we are? I think its a better attitude to have, right?

1, Alll I can say at this point is where we won’t end up. This includes but is not limited to the Big East, WNBA, World Cup, and Narnia.
2. Same old argument…speed versus strength. In the words of Ricky Bobby, “If you’re not first, you’re last.” Hopefully, we will be quicker than last year which should help compensate for any strength that may have been lost.
3. It’s not my biggest concern at this point but it is number two after the health of Sheffield. I know we have “depth” at that position but I just can’t help but pull for the guy.
4. No clue
5. June Jones

1. I think you guys have me about convienced that XII & Pac 10, are a good fit. I wouldnt mind matching up with Arizoan and ASU, maybe be a babeilicious road trip evey couple of years, from the word on the street they are legendary. But maybe this is all just testing the waters and wont happen for another five to ten years. Texas is smart enough to stay put then we should all be OK.

2. More atheletic Olinemen – Definilty a good thing, watch the NFL draft, those guys wernt fat at all

3. O line is always a big concern, look at the success of the 08 Season, mostly Oline driven!

4. I think we might get some new, unknown guys starting, but thats the hardest position to play young

5. My biggest concern is that the SMU girls wont travel as well as Red Raiders coming to Dallas. Not much reason to leave the metroplex to go to Lubbock. We know in Sept it will still be hot and the short shorts will display the hard earned tans from a long summer in the Texas sun.

1) my hope is that we land in some sort of Big XII/Pac10 mega conference but could see us landing in the MWC if the Big XII has a total nuclear meltdown. I have read that Cal and Stanford have some reservations about Tech possibly joining the conference.

2) For the style of play that Neal Brown wants to implement, I can’t really see the loss of 15-30 pounds as a big hurdle. It depends on if the weight was fat, water weight, etc…. as long as it isnt muscle, then we should be fine and maybe a bit quicker.

3) QB health is my biggest concern. I believe the OL will be fine.

4) my new slogan for the O-line, “In Matt Moore We Trust”

5) June Jones will put in a few wrinkles but I don’t think athletically SMU is in the same zip code. Bad Weather or freaky QB injuries could make the game closer than it should be.

Cal remembers...

the wood the Raiders laid on the Bears in the Holiday bowl especially when that was suppose to be their breakout year…plus we don’t have enough hippies teaching at Tech…but Cal/Stanford is a real cool rivalry….

Just one big answer

Despite having a leaky o-line, under performing receivers, and a carousel at the qb position last year…we still had a winning season. Not a lot of teams can overcome that kind of adversity. I feel like the o-line will perform a lot better this coming season. Matt Moore will have our guys ready. There isnt a whole lot of experience on the o-line but those guys have seen meaningful snaps and that what counts most. Theres a change in philosophy for our football team but our guys can and will just well. June Jones is gonna have his ponies ready but its at the jones. He’s got a explosive offense…but so do we and our defense is gonna be licking its chops. The D will, imo, show us some crazy sh!t, but we wont tip our hand until the UT game.

I love the Pirate Captain

but given all that kind of adversity, I just dont believe he had it in his DNA to be able to handle it. We overcame it to the extent of our record ended up pretty good. But I just believe deep down that Tubbs could get his team or will his team through his leadership past the kind of hurdles we met up against last year.

Ditto

Leach is a great coach…just i dont think he can really get the team together and focus on one thing. Not a knock against the captain by any means. Some people have certain traits and skills and Tubs has a leadership trait imo. He talks with confidence, maybe just a lil bit of swagger to boot. He certainly believes in his staff and vice versa. Kids will buy into this. Not saying that they didnt when the captain was here, but when you a pedigree like Tubs has, a certain respect comes with it and the know-how to get it done.

my impession of the Pirate Captain

“yeah well, just do your best”

“work hard in practice”

“get your reps in”

“study your classes”

etc…

Spoken in a voice like he just climbed out of the back of a van after havin just smoked a bowl with Tommy Chong.

Face it, when youre as innovative as Captain Leach, his program sold itself to the kinda players he wanted. When you get self motivated players like Harrell (coach’s son) and Crabtree (just plain talented…the Captain’s eye picked that up), and every other “plays with a chip on his shoulder” type of guy (Symons, ALL the o-linemen we’ve ever had) youre gonna have success. God Bless him….But sometimes you need a ball coach and it doesnt matter whether his Off. Coord runs an Air Raid Offense, Triple Option, or 3 yds and a cloud of dust.

You do shop at HEB, don't you?

1. “Kinfolk said, Jed move away from here the Pac-10 is the place to be, swimming pools, movie stars……”
2. So many OL are carrying around so much extra fat just to get in the 300lb range that they could drop 10% of their weight with out any effect on muscle mass. Next time your in HEB go pick up a 25lb bag of dog food to carry it around on your back while you shop and then tell me this is not a good thing. It also is good for the players long term health, NFL linemen tend to die way to young.
3.Experience is the X factor, but coaching will take care of this.
4.Adam James if he has not lost to much weight.
5.June Jones….. but the juxtaposition of June Jones’ jumping and jiving juggernaut against gentleman Tom’s jacobinic defense should be a joy to watch for jubilant Jim’s and Jane’s sitting in the Jones in their jaunty scarlet and black.

Five Answers

1. My head is spinning from all the possibilities. Re: Pac-10

Option A: Strategic Alliance. How will that work? Two ten team conferences with two interconference games plus two other nonconference games? How do you schedule your own conference? Do you still split up into divisions? No divisions means NINE games. Ouch, my brain hurts!

Option B: Mega Conference…OW OW OW

Option C: Bust ass to remain the Big XII and remain viable with 12 teams. I just think our conference, if put to the test, can out nimble the Big T1E1N conference. I saw on CF Live yesterday that the process could take the them EIGHTEEN months. Surely, we can put in place and enact a plan to keep from gettin our teams poached by these guys. We just need to show the “huevos” to do something.

2. Im just not seeing the connection between MORE running the ball and O-Linemen losing 30lbs. Especially after knowing what we know about guys like Louis Vazquez, and all the other NFL caliber guys that have come through our system. But Im lining up for my glass of Katfish Koolaid.

3. No. I just dont believe that the unit will be slow to gel two years in a row. They will have learned their lesson. Biggest concern? The unknown factor of “will our new D work?”

4. Gallington(G) and Okafor (T)

5. Yeah, June Jones scares the p!ss outta me

in my book

there is absolutely nothing wrong with guys like Waddle (350) and McDaniel (335) coming in a little lighter. The connection is how much more stamina you have at the end of the game to get the tough yards. Face it, we couldn’t do it last year. The ground and pound of the Dallas Cowboys (2008) in the 2nd half with a lead was only a dream for a team like Tech last year. We kept passing and opened ourselves up to too many comebacks and squeakers.
None of the D-linemen are that big anyway. What separates the Vasquez’s of the world from the others are strength, first step quickness, and nastiness. There’s no doubt we’ve got the strength (and always have), losing weight helps with the first step, and I believe it also helps them be nasty when the game’s on the line. It’s hard to get after them and to catch a LB on a blitz when you’re sucking wind in the huddle.

The rumors of the demise of the Big 12 are greatly exaggerated

1. Tech first won’t leave the Big 12. Meaning if Colorado, Mizzou or Nebraska jumps ship the conference will just add 2 or 3 up and comers like U H or NM. It would be a bit of switch in that perhaps Tech moves to the North Division but even that’s a stretch. Texas – I believe they know they have good thing going and would like to maintain their dominance of the league. As stated before they are the market leader for the league and them like it that way. I just want Tech to supplant, dethrone or trip them up – for a long time. The thing is the Big 12 “administrators” need their jobs so from a self preservation stand point they will rewicker a new construct and they will do it fast.
2. It’s only a good thing if they spring a1000 yard rusher and we drop the sacks allowed to under 10-12. I.e. 1 sack per game. And crank 85 plus offensive plays per game.

3. I was impressed by Brandon Carters overall effort especially at Nebraska, not so much with Marlon Winn. S. Byrnes played his butt off and Keown got things done very well from what I could see. I don’t see how the offensive line could be anything but the biggest issue because it’s the foundation of the scheme. That just equals out to an automatic concern with folks graduating. So sort of but that’s just college football. The Tech recruiting, losses from academics etc and strength program seems to churn 3 – 4 serviceable linemen per year. The recruited freshmen linemen don’t seem to mind red shirting a year to bulk up and a fair number of the graduates are catching on in the pros so that helps the long term recruiting effort.
So yes it’s concern but I am optimistic.
4. Okafor and Waddle. i guess. Who knows what Coach Moore concocts?
5. The passing attack for the Pony’s versus our secondary. Less of a concern if the pass rush dominates and e get lots of hurries, tipped passes and sacks generated by the from 3down linemen + 1 LB rushing.
The QB K. Padron that they have is a typical June Jones coached slinger. Meaning he’s accurate and a good check down guy. But his receivers are fairly inexperienced only 2 or 3 of the five expected starters played much last year? Guess that why we need a spring game to look at right?

1. I don’t see the Big 12 breaking up anytime soon. Texas won’t leave either. The conference will get some kind of TV agreement going that gives UT what it wants and the others will follow. I do see Missouri leaving and I’m really fine with that. I would like NU to stick around but if they decide to go that will be fine also.
2. I’m fine with some weight loss on the OL provided the strength and speed pick up in the absense of that extra weight.
3. I am concerned about this OL but the measurables on these guys are good. I also have complete faith in Matt Moores ability to coach these players up. The group coming in is plenty talented enough to make thinks happen.
4. Waddle but that’s just a guess on my behalf.
5. I may be alone but I have very little concern about the Mustangs. I have that game slated as a scoring fest for Tech. Tech has way too many weapons offensively and defensively for this game to not be pure domination. It’s TT first game and it’s at the Jones. I would be dissappointed if Tech didn’t win by 40+ points. I like June Jones and his coaching style but it’s not enough to get me too worried. SMU has no defense and the offense is suspect.

If we got moved to the North,

it would give us a much better shot at the CG every year, and thus the MNC. If Nebraska left, we would dominate that division. Maybe even if they didn’t; we’ve won the last four. We would only play UT and atm two out of four years and I wonder how that would affect recruiting in Texas.

We didn’t fare very well in replacing two starters on the O-line last year (until later in the year). All I can do is hope we do better with the current batch of players. I suppose there are good and bad things about losing a little weight in the line, but we’ll have to see about that, too.

Raider1992 you gave the best answer for question 4 !!!

who do you think starts at right guard and right tackle?

4. Waddle but that’s just a guess on my behalf.

But if he losses below 300 lbs, we are going have to limit him to one position !!!

1. TTU must be in a BCS conference, I think it very important that the teams on the schedule be more local than distant…fans need to be able to make away games…that is all I have to say about that.

2. 15 to 30 lbs is a lot of loss, it may have been a lot of excess, it certainly would be for me. I like the idea of guys who may be a little quicker, who may be a little stronger in their legs (the conditioning focus) and who may be getting geared to do drive blocking as well as pass blocking.

3. Replacing that much man power on the OL is scary bidness to me….

4. Right Tackle; Waddle, I hope he is one who lost a lot of weight, Right Guard; Gallington—and I hope he lost a lot of weight. both of these guys were listed about 350 at one time, I think that is way too heavy for anyone.

5. The Mustangs do not concern me. The Red Raiders do in that I am hoping they demonstrate the difference in what we expect to see in a very good Big12 team and a good CSA team.

My biggest concern of SMU

is their head coach, June Jones. Any team coached by that man has a legit shot of winning any game. I’m not high on any of their players since they’re all young fish. However, I could see June Jones pulling off a few unexpected trick plays to start off their 2010 season.

The results of their last bowl game also concern me. SMU man-handled Nevada in their bowl game by 20+ pts. Compare that to the dismal performance Tech had against Nevada a few yrs ago with Harrell and Crabtree playing that game.

I think Tech should and will win the game, but I also could see Tech losing this game like they did against A&M if our players show up with a big-head and don’t do their business on the field.

by SkyBlade on May 20, 2010 10:28 PM CDT reply actions

Further thoughts on SMU

My concern is that, after the SMU game, we still won’t really know anything more about Tech’s capabilities and potential to compete on the “National Stage”. SMU just won’t possess the horsepower (no pun intended) to make a game of it, in my mind. So, if we should see a Tech slaughter – in my mind, likely – then we won’t have learned very much.

If we lose to SMU – we will have learned a lot …

ABOUT THE O-LINE

Heres the scoop:

Lonnie Edwards is in the elite category right now, will be VERY good.

Terry McDaniels would also be in that category had he not gone down in the Neb game.

In center we have two very good prospects:

Justin Keown held his own against Suh and Crick very well, no difference could be seen between him and Brynes

Chris Olson is a jack-of-all-trades kinda guy, the swiss army knife.

In RG Deveric Gallington is showing some promise, Mickey Okafor moved to tackle.

The RT position WILL be taken by LaAdrian Waddle. He is supposedly becoming a BEAST.

I have high hopes for this group!
