Double-T Nation Daily Diatribe :: 05.27.10

Big 12 / Pac-10 Alliance: I ran across this DMN article about Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott talking with Rivals.com (I could not find the Rivals.com article, otherwise I would have just linked to it) about a possible Big 12 and Pac-10 Alliance:
"It certainly makes some sense to look at," Scott told Rivals.com. "Our analysis is looking at a few different option on parallel tracks and one of those would be strategic alliance, the core of which would be a TV pooling joint venture with the Big 12…Dan Beebe and I have had discussions about that since last September."
This somewhat confirms what we've been discussing, which is the two conferences joining forces to become some sort of Voltron.
Red Raider Makes Top 100: MaxPreps' Tom Lemming released his top 100 players from the class of 2011 and Lakeland, FL, WR Javares McRoy made the list at #73. McRoy is only ranked as a 3-star by Scouts and you can expect that to change.
Miscellaneous: Dr. Saturday's Matt Hinton sizes up the Oklahoma Sooners, meanwhile, the internets are abuzz that Phil Steele has the Sooners ranked #1 in his preseason magazine, per ESPN's Pat Forde's Twitter.

Henderson to Transfer to Texas Tech: Former Utah Ute SG Marshall Henderson (6-2/175), per LAJ's Courtney Linhehan, will apparently transfer to Texas Tech. Henderson does not come without baggage as he was the player that shoved/hit a BYU player and was suspended for a game (Linehan's story has the video). I found a video of Henderson from high school and also a bit from Henderson last year leading the way against Michigan. Henderson was the second leading scorer for Utah, as a true freshman, averaging 11.8 PPG, 2.5 RPG, 0.8 APG on 37.4% shooting.
Although I haven't seen this confirmed anywhere, I'm guessing that Henderson will be taking the scholarship of SF Corbin Ray, who supposedly will not be able to play any more due to a concussion suffered before the season started last year. Henderson will be able to practice with the team this year, but won't be eligible to play until the next year. I would guess that Henderson will have three years of eligibility available (he didn't redshirt, so the year that he sits out will count as a redshirt).
When Henderson becomes eligible, it will be a huge boost to this program as the team will be graduating John Roberson, David Tairu, D'walyn Roberts, Mike Singletary, Brad Reese and Theron Jenkins. Quite simply, there will need to be some players who can step in and put the ball in the basket.

Worn Out Arms and Aggie Bats; Red Raiders Lose to Texas A&M: The bullpen just couldn't keep it close. Ben Flora had a decent start (5.1 IP; 6 H; 4 R; 3 ER; 0 BB; 6 SO), but the bullpen couldn't keep it together as Brandon Petite (1.1 IP; 2 H; 3 ER; 2 BB; 1 SO) and Brennan Stewart (0.1 IP; 2 H; 2 ER; 0 BB; 1 SO) struggled mightily. The fact that the bats haven't woken up in over a week is also disconcerting. The Red Raiders were limited to three hits for the entire game and will face UT's Taylor Jungmann today, one of the best (maybe the best) pitchers in the Big 12.
LAJ's George Watson has the recap from yesterday's game and has this from head coach Dan Spencer on running out tired and young arms:
"With who we are and our personnel (on the mound) we need to do a better job offensively early in the game," Tech coach Dan Spencer said. "Not taking away anything from Wacha, he did a good job, but we needed to put some pressure on him. We had a chance if we could get on base to run the bases against Wacha — that’s not his strength, holding runners — but we couldn’t get on base.
"We’re running some guys in (to pitch) … who haven’t had a lot of success, one, and second haven’t had a lot of experience pitching in close games late in the season. That’s what we had."
Bettis Expected to Start: LAJ's George Watson writes that Spencer will start Chad Bettis for today's game against the Longhorns:
"We’re running some guys in (to pitch) … who haven’t had a lot of success, one, and second haven’t had a lot of experience pitching in close games late in the season. That’s what we had."
Help on the Way: LAJ's Don Williams has an article about two different Hunter Scotts, one plays for LCU, but the other is a senior, plays for Coronado and has signed with Texas Tech. The two Hunter Scotts have combined for 113 innings, 125 strikeouts, 15 wins and 11 saves. I wish I knew the numbers for the Scott headed to Lubbock. There's no doubt that the Red Raider need more pitching and every bit helps.

The more I think about this alliance with Pac 10
The more apprehensive I get. How many non-con games a year? 2? Well we have a hard enough problem beating the Houstons of the world right? How would we do travelling to Seattle or LA? Oh well, maybe the TT era TT will play better on the road.

Nice Voltron reference.
http://www.voltron.com/main.asp
The Voltron website is awesome and you can watch tons of old episodes for free. 80s cartoons rule!
The baseball team gave us something to believe in. They fell flat at the end due to lack of depth but they are headed in the right direction. I hate losing to the aggies.
How can OU be ranked #1 when they weren’t even that good last year? This is confusing.
rankings
Basically I’m better off asking my 5 year old who should be ranked in the top 25. It’s mindless guess work that has no validity. I would feel better if rankings were held off until October.

buzz....pole dancing for news
the internets are abuzz
It seems to my Morse code mind that in the world of internet journalism creating buzz is more important than offering any form of insightful commentary. I should not just blame the internets as the cable news networks perfected this form of infotainment.
I finally came to the conclusion that ESPN is following the MTV business plan of transforming itself from a sports news network into a sports lifestyle network. (some of you are to young to remember that MTV was once a “music channel” that played “Music” videos) It is a good plan, as so many people are more interested in gossiping about sports than watching the game itself. Sports, like the music world, is full of personalities that readily lend them selves to this. Brett Favre to TO, Labron to Ron Artest. Saints and sinners held up for us by ESPNs carnival barkers, to knock down in a flurry of keyboard taps or radio call-ins. From a labor stand point it is much more cost effective, no flying around the county doing research, just say or post something mildly controversial and watch the hits and ratings go up.
Craig James is perfect for ESPN he is both the alter crying God loving father trying to protect his child, and a lying two faced monster bent on destroying another mans life, just to sooth his spoiled child. Why would they ever get rid of a ratings bonanza like that
Notice how Phil’s preseason ranking has every corner of the country covered, making OU number one will piss off the majority of the masses and adding in TCU it picks up the rest. This is what I find maddening, they never have any objective reasoning behind them, (unless of course your team is picked #1) just controversy.
OK, my rant is over.
If you like preseason polls because they generate interesting football talk in the off season, then you have my blessing to frolic and play, but take this bit of warning from your friend BMAXW ; Voltron was not created to make the children of the 80’s happy, it was to make his creator very very happy$$$$$. Now SpongeBob SquarePants was a gift from the gods and I am sure Stephen Hillenburg will be canonized, which is great,…. but I prefer cartoon pole dancing with Ren & Stimpy

Like Sports Radio turning into "Dude Lifestyle" radio
Call us at the ticket & tell us about the worst fist date you’ve ever had? I haven’t heard any of the “personalities” on The Ticket or 105.3 “The Fan” talk about sports in years. But they still call themselves a sports radio station. Annoying. Then you have The History Channel, who haven’t broadcast a serious documentary about history (except for WWII) in years. It’s all about visions seen by children of the virgin Mary or Nostradamus’ predictions or monster trucks crushing things. History should be first & foremost about things that verifiably happened. The History Channel has become the Speculative Nonsense Channel.
That’s my rant and I’m sticking to it.

Target Market
I do remember when MTV was actually Music, and the same can be said to all cable networks. Originally each network was different and had very interesting things sort of like magazines once did for each particular sport of hobbie. Then as the business model matured through mergers and acquisitions (remeber The Nashville Network, became TNN, the national network and eventually the crap known as SpikeTV) it all became about the numbers.
The numbers tend to drive marketing to the general population, aka the lowest most common denominator of society. I think youve nailed it BMXAW the sad thing is this is also what happend to news. Now its more important to be polarizing and present opposite viewpoints instead of working from the facts to compromise democratically.
"aka the lowest most common denominator of society."
Sam Walton built an empire with these people, while Sears & Wards pushed them away.
So does this mean that ESPN is the Wal-Mart of sports entertainment?

Agree
I’ve kind of given up on the so called “sports radio” thing. I would even go and say the same about our own ESPN 104.3 with Chris Level’s Tech Talk. Seems like they bs about nonsense and then go to a commercial break every 2 minutes. The only value is when they have a player or coach call in.
