Official 2010 Post-Spring Football Depth Chart :: Discussion

I thought that a FanPost might provide a better opportunity to discuss the recently released post-spring depth chart, especially with the long weekend and me not posting very much for the next three days.  There's a ton of interesting things and I'll start out with some observations:

- Beau Carpenter backing up at right tackle.
- No Pearlie Graves.
- The 4-3 rather than the 3-4 defense, although Brian Duncan is listed as a defensive end.
- Jarvis Phillips starting at cornerback.

Let's hear from you.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Double-T Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Double-T Nation's writers or editors.

1) 4-3 vs 3-4: I think we still lack all of the right cogs to play 3-4 the majority of snaps. My prediction is that we see it on about 30% of snaps.

2) Will Ford beat out LaRon Moore. I like it, though I am pretty surprised that Moore is not starting on either side.

3) Prediction #2: Ward will beat out Leong for the majority of snaps before the end of the year.

4) We will never line up with a TE on the field

5) Sheffield is really the same height as Potts?

1) I don’t know that you’ll be able to tell what we’re in most of the year. Our base set is going to have 3 traditional linemen and a flex lineman in someone like Duncan and Audrey Barr.

2) Little surprised by this myself. Jarvis Phillips was pretty quiet all spring but wins the role on the other side? Consistency? Motivation?

3) Doubt it. I think the two will have a very similar relationship that Britton and Leong had 2 years ago: Ward will see the majority of his snaps between the 20’s and Leong will get most of the snaps in the redzone.

4) Doubt it. We’ll see a TE and multi-TE set in the first game, potentially on the first snap. Late in the year we may not see so many TE’s, though.

5) Yup.

re: 1)

I think our personnel are still more geared toward the 4-3, so while we will give some 3-4 looks, we will run with 4-3 personnel, versus having 4 LBs on the field. Our nickel will look more like 3-4 than what we are used to seeing as our nickel D. That is all I am saying.

by NM99 on May 30, 2010 8:40 AM CDT up reply actions

I think we will show TE first play...

Coach Brown is going to be ready to play some of his base offense—whatever that is…

He is going to have a number of plays that he wants to see executed well, with good timing and good clean execution off the qb’s arm. Probably several good running plays in the mix.

If the game is going well offensively, he may settle into something he wants the team to improve…get the reps…maybe the run blocking for example…or who knows what.

The TE’s both of them, surely will get work.

on #2

I think Moore’s injurey has something to do with him not being in the starting spot right now. Waiting to see how he comes back from it.

WTF?

No Crawford – after all the hoopla during the spring?

Batch and Stephens were limited in the spring on purpose. Crawford put his name back in the mix: he and Jeffers are trying to be #3, though I think that all 4 will see playing time: this group is too talented to not.

LOL, some of use are chomping at the bit for O linemen currently

well, we may need more depth on the dl as well, but that seems less urgent at the moment because there is a bit more youth there.

Depth Chart

I would guess the only reason Moore is second string has to do with the injury he suffered during spring practice. If he recovers, I would expect to see him on the filed a lot this fall.

Also keep in mind that secondary is the strong point for this defense based on the returning players. I would imagine Willis will have the D line up in nickle a bunch so in essence Tech will have three starting corners.

i agree

Moore would be a starter if not for that injury he suffered. Come fall, he will see the field quite a bit.

Yes, Moore's injury is showing in the two deep.

It is a question of how he comes back from that, I heard it was a ‘broken leg’ could be rough, I don’t know much about it though.

Nancy

on the two deep?

Maybe it’s Tubbs way of setting Nancy up to fail. Lots can happen between now and the middle of the season. Nancy could have a real bad hang nail and tummy ache.

Lots'a young guys on defense.

I have to re-think all of the d stuff.

No big surprises on offense other than the line…I so appreciate that Olson can play so many positions, but he is relegated to 2nd at center, shouldn’t he be starting somewhere ???? If he is a good lineman, he will not get much recognition as a 2nd player. Either he is not that good or he is not being treated right.

Alicia James may be listed as starter

But there are 12 positions listed on offense. Hopefully the only time the TE sees the field it’s a running play. Not that Alicia will be much help blocking.

He'll make an opposing defensive end piss himself from laughing....

at the fact that Nancy was going to attempt to block him. This should help us at least one play.

Depth and Rotation...

I think with the amount of rotation the defensive staff has discussed wanting to implement, a 2 deep depth chart doesn’t tell the whole story. If practice is any indication, they will rotating these guys in and out all game to keep the attack fresh. I think 3rd and 4th string guys are see the field nearly every game, just a prediction.

We are on the same page with the thought that two deep is but a start

in assessing who will play…and for the same reason.

Incoming Freshman/JuCo

Which, if any, incoming freshman/JuCo do ya’ll see breaking the two deep? Obviously Scott Smith should break right on through, with our DE position having 2 RS freshman as our starting two.

Also, what do ya’ll think with Baron Batch and Stephens sharing the starting RB roll as it says there. Does this look like Stephens will get more carries?

by aggieraider on May 28, 2010 3:32 PM CDT reply actions

Batch will get more carries, he is the #1. But I’d expect that they’re pretty even at the end.

by kayakyakr on May 29, 2010 10:49 AM CDT up reply actions

I think Batch gets more carries but I wouldn’t go as far as saying Batch is a better back. I think he’s very good but also a late bloomer. Stephens as an equal starter along with Batch makes sense to me especially since we are going to run the ball more now. Scott Smith should start immediately if he is all the rave. I would love to see Richards and Smith as the book ends of this defense.

Batch is the starter and he will carry the load.

Stephens will be a great change of pace and/or part of a double back threat.

Then Jeffers gets in the mix to the degree that he is ready.

I will not be surprised to see Crawford in the backfield inside the 10…perhaps with Batch, they could turn into a pretty strong 1-2, in short yardage situations…

Batch is more of a power running back and Stephens in more finesse (granted, both of them have shown power and finesse at times). I predict the situation will dictate who gets touches.

Smith's contribution is very important this season.

I think I heard he was arriving Lubbock soon—or perhaps already. I do hope so.

Looks like some surprises on the OL

Keown is ahead of Olson, while Mc Daniel isn’t the clear leader. Is there a third string center?

Isn't Joel Gray working the 3 spot at center ?

Depth Chart

Well for me I don’t think any of this has traction. I would wait until August before analyzing who is where and why. Some of these don’t even make sense but for now it’s probably about as useless as preseason polls.

Valid Point

This is not the Fall Depth Chart, it is the Post Spring Depth Chart….I did not give much thought to the title of the chart until I thought about your words.

It does serve to give some level of incentive to those—especially the younger guys—whose names are listed.

I think,

I feel a lot better looking at the Secondary depth chart. Seeing it down on paper, it looks really solid.

I agree we seem to lack depth at the DLine but that is helped by the fact that we will be needing only ONE (hopefully) DT/NT if we go to a 3-4 D. Depth will be added when we’ll be having to dream up ways to get Graves, Wade, and Whitlock on the field.
