Double-T Nation Daily Diatribe :: Conference Realignment Leftovers and Twitter Campaign

Twitter Campaign: I've started a new Twitter campaign in order to get new readers to join DTN. Let me know if you think this is an effective method of gaining a few new readers:

Conference Realignment Chronicles - Some Leftovers: Just a few more links on conference realignment. Corn Nation's Husker Mike has similar questions about the reliability of Orangeblood.com's Chip Brown . . . Rock M Nation's Bill C. takes a look at the Big 12 if Nebraska and Colorado had never joined. This is from the years of 1996 through 2000 . . . ESPN Dallas' Jeff Caplan talk with TAMU AD Bill Byrne, who says that he's not a fan of the Bevo Network . . . RRS.com's Robert Giovannetti has Texas Tech Chancellor Kent Hance on the tiered revenue plan, but I think these are essentially the same quotes (someone please correct me if I'm wrong) from yesterday's AAS.com's article by Kirk Bohls and Cedric Golden . . . the LAJ has an editorial, but I'm not sure who wrote it and so I'm asking you to take the following quotes with a grain of salt, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if they were true:
- It's one thing for the five schools fearful of being left out of realignment to offer money to Texas, A&M and Oklahoma. Why not include Tech and Oklahoma State? But what's worse is Tech and OSU were never told and Tech found out about the potential offer in the media. Texas has said it won't take the money. We've heard the Aggies and Sooners won't take it either and hope that's true.
- Why did UT's president announce the Big 12 schools potentially going to the Pac-10 Conference were staying put? Again, no one at Tech was contacted.
I'd like to find out who the author of this editorial is, and if it's true, then this is a pretty good indication as to why Hance appears to be leading the charge against the tiered revenue plan, which is that only a handful of people even knew about the plan at all . . .

Potts Interview: FSSW's Steve Hunt interviewed QB Taylor Potts. Go read the whole thing, but I'll pick out some interesting things from the interview. Potts on his hand:
How is your hand?
Potts: I’ve been cleared already, so I’m good to go right now actually.
And a little bit on the difference between the new regime and the old regime:
From the quarterback’s standpoint, what’s the biggest difference you’ve noticed between how things were under Coach Leach and how they are now under Coach Tuberville?
Potts: Coach Tuberville and Coach Brown, they feel like they have a system and a way of coaching and handling quarterbacks that’s successful. They really want to hand that to us and let us be as successful as possible. They’re really good coaches. They really coach us hard on details and things that will make us a lot better as opposed to kind of coaching ourselves and doing that’s comfortable for us.How did Coach Leach impact you the most on a personal level?
Potts: Personally, he really pushed you to be a leader. He really expects that out of a quarterback position. It leaves you no option but to be a leader. He wants you to take over. He always told me that I was the only guy that had a right to talk and that’s a big privilege on the football field. So, since I had that privilege, everybody was looking towards me. In the huddle, I was the only one who had the right to talk and say anything. So I had better say something good and say it often.
Previewing the Red Raiders: With all of the conference realignment talk, I neglected to mention that I did a Q&A with College Football Zealots previewing Texas Tech . . . Athlon's Magazine is also releasing their rankings outside the Top 25 and they've picked Texas Tech to finish 37th:
No. 37: Texas Tech — The team seemed to play with more of a spark when Steven Sheffield was the quarterback in 2009, but they call him "Sticks" for a reason. He’s so wiry that it’s been hard for him to stay healthy. If Sheffield can stay on the field this season, Tech is probably an eight- or nine-win team with an outside shot to do better than that. The offense has to figure things out on the right side of the line, but the skill talent is among the best in the league. The big issues are up front on defense. Missed tackles were a problem in the spring. Nosetackle Colby Whitlock, linebacker Brian Duncan and cornerback LaRon Moore will all have to be leaders for a defense in total transition.
Video of Tubs on Realignment: KAMC has video of Tubs talking about the conference realignment and being disappointed with losing two universities and the conference game.

Conference Realignment and Baseball: LAJ's George Watson opines that losing Nebraska and Colorado will have little impact on the Big 12. Here's head coach Dan Spencer:
"I don’t think the power or the strength of the conference will change at all," said Texas Tech head coach Dan Spencer, who just completed his second season. "Nebraska was obviously a great member of the league but I don’t think losing Nebraska will affect our RPI or our deal at all. We need to know from the standpoint of the schedule, are we going to have a 24-game league schedule or what are we doing? Are we going to do something different or have another weekend of non-conference or whatever? But I don’t think it will affect the RPI of the league."
Barnes and McGruder = Freshmen All-Americans: Per the official site, 1B/OF Barrett Barnes and 2B Jamodrick McGruder have been named to some freshmen All-American teams, including both being named to the 2010 Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-America and Barnes being named to the first team of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Congrats to both young men.
Braden on HBO Real Sports: Former Texas Tech pitcher and current Oakland A, P Dallas Braden, was / is on HBO Real Sports. I found some FoxSports video of the interview, feel free to post additional links if you find any.

It sure was nice to read about football this morning.
Thanks Seth.
I hope Potts and Sheffield have a good summer. It’s going to be nut cutting time come August.

On the Twitter campaign
I’ve heard it helps to have a ‘source’ inside the athletic department to help you ‘shape’ your message daily; then you can Tweet early and often, and then remind people to come to your site and ‘see what you’re all about’. I’ve heard this method works really well. Might need to add a subscription section with pay info to get the full benefit of it, though. ;-)
Why not include Tech and Oklahoma State?
Wait, so this guy is saying he has no problems with the schools receiving bribes to stay, he just wants to make sure Tech and Okie State ‘get theirs’? Wow.
As to why Tech and Okie State didn’t receive any money; because their invitations to the Pac-10 were contingent on others, i.e. texas and OU, going to the conference. Without texas or OU leaving, Tech and OSU would be stay in the Big 12, hence, they don’t need an inducement to stay.
The secind point is one I’ve been thinking a lot about lately; why did texas have a press conference before Beebe’s official press conference? Why was the announcement about the Zombie10 being made by texas? Why were they allowed to control the narrative in the beginning? I mean, I know now that we have morons running things at A&M at the top of our administration, but I’m surprised everyone else just sat back and let texas take the lead.
As for Tech not being contacted about all the Big 12 schools staying put, with texas deciding to stay, Tech had no choice. You could read it as leveraging or strong-arming Tech into the decision, but it isn’t like they had anywhere else to go.
You still don't get it do you?
The ditribution of monies among the schools he is suggesting is based more out of mutual respect and equality. Tech and OSU were just as likely to leave as the other 3 schools and that was his point. It has nothing to do with actually accepting the penalty money.
I think it’s time you stop posturing and assuming A&M had a ticket out of here with the SEC. In the end A&M had no choice also. It may be difficult for you aggies to accept but you were played just like everybody else was. The only shot I see you guys had at leaving for the SEC was if OU decided to go along. We can beat this topic like a dead horse and talk “what if’s” all day long but the simple fact is UT is now running this conference and we are all stuck with each other.

AND.....
Now that all this politicking and under the table negotiating for $$$ is finished….we get to play ball. And this year’s game against A&M is going to be just a little more special…..
Actually
the Ags still have an offer on the table to join the SEC and can join at any time. I agree with the Tech fan who posted on our site that he should be mad at the A&M leadership for passing on the SEC, b/c it meant that Tech missed out on the Pac 10 and ensuring they would be in a BCS conference now instead of worrying about finding one to join during the next go around.
you really need to do something about your denial problem
A&M had an offer to join the SEC, and we turned it down. It is that simple.
We also had an offer to join the Pac-10, which we also turned down.
Tech didn't have an invitation to leave by themselves
the rationale is if you keep texas and OU from joining the Pac-10, OSU and Tech aren’t going anywhere, therefore you don’t need to offer more money to Tech or OSU, just texas and OU; this is the business decision the “Forgotten Five” made, and it seems to have worked, at least for now.
He freely admits there is no equality in this conference, so why does he have a problem with A&M, OU, and texas getting more of the penalty fees? Like I said, his problem isn’t that A&M or texas or OU were bribed to stay, it is that Tech wasn’t similarly offered a bribe.
Our offer to go to the SEC certainly wasn’t contingent on OU going; the SEC would have access to the television markets and exposure in Texas recruiting without OU. Oklahoma was offered because they would even out the numbers, and because they bring a strong football team; their television markets are negligible.
Potts has a lot of fun
If there was a drinking game based on the number of times Taylor Potts uses the term “a lot of fun” in that interview you would be fairly intoxicated after reading it.
Seth, good job on the Q & A. At the risk of sounding ignorant, I’m not sure I fully understand the hype around Colby Whitlock. Perhaps it’s one of those situations where he is a known commodity that receives a lot of attention from opposing offenses and is rendered ineffective which opens up opportunities for other defensive players. I know he had a monster game against UT in 2008 (insert moment of nostalgia here) but other than that he has been consistent and reliable. Defensive tackles not named Suh normally do not get a lot of attention and maybe Whitlock has been a victim of his own success (i believe he was a freshman all american, right?). Here’s hoping he has a stellar senior campaign.
Twitter (and most social media) gets to be a bit narcissistic at times but it makes sense as an advertising arm of the blog. DoubleTNation is one of the best sources available for information on Tech athletics and a great community for alumni and fans. Hat tip as always to Seth and everyone who contributes to this blog.

Why after finishing in the top 25 the past few years are we suddenly 37th? Oh yeah, we are Tech. We will be terrible every year. Always. Also, we are stupid.
But we would never know these things unless Beergut came every day to tell us so
Thank you Beergut for your relentless abuse of Texas Tech on this, a Texas Tech blog site! You are such a valued member of this community.

Yes we are stupid, because we graduated from Tech
It was nice of the Missouri Governor to remind us of our substandard education. I’m already trying to think of the signs I can make for the Missouri games, complete with misspelled words and hick-isms.
Right, because when I think metropolitan sophistication, I think Missouri

call me mean, but...
Last year I thought Potts was getting a bum wrap for rocky play behind a makeshift line. I still think we had O-Line troubles in ‘09, but reading that interview it seems like he has leadership issues also. It reads like he just wants to be “one of the guys”, which is fine and all, but we DO need out quarterback to be a leader of the team. We DO need him to give direction and inspire the other players. That interview reads like Potts didn’t want that responsibility when Coach Leach was in charge.
Potts only has the physical gifts to be a QB
His issues are all mental: he has a hard time making quick decisions under pressure, he’s not inspirational to his teammates. Even his throws are either forced or too tentative (overthrowing long passes & underthrowing screen passes). There’s never any touch to his throws. He could be an effective QB in a run offense (which is why his best day last year was the Oklahoma game, where we ran the ball most of the day). But as long as Tech is a passing team, the offense needs a natural born leader. Which I think Tubs recognized right away this spring & why Sheffield has the edge going into the fall.

agree...
with your accessment of Potts. I don’t have any doubt that Shefield is the starter this season.

Q&A with College Football Zealots
I just wanted to take a minute and say thanks again for doing the Q&A with our blog. The Texas Tech preview was actually the most viewed item on our blog last week so thank you for the link!
