Double-T Nation Daily Diatribe :: Slim Pickings

Expectations: LAJ's Courtney Linehan writes that the Texas Tech basketball team expects to make the NCAA Tournament this season (which is what my expectations are as well).  Here's SF Mike Singletary:

"As we were coming in as freshmen we always thought our senior year, it's going to be us three," Singletary said. "We know what we're going to get out of Brad Reese, Theron Jenkins, guys like that, so it all comes down to how we play.

"We have to all three play good every single night, and if we play good every single night I don't see us not living up to our potential and being one of the best teams in the country."

I'm glad we're all on the same page.

Singletary also provide a little bit of insight on JUCO PF Paul Cooper, who we hope is exactly what Singletary describes:

The 6-foot-7 forward is still rehabbing and will not be in Lubbock until the second session of summer school begins July 7. When Roberts gets back, transfer Paul Cooper, a junior college teammate of Brad Reese's, will join Robert Lewandowski and him in the post. Cooper's been impressive in summer intrasquad scrimmages. His 6-foot-8, 280-pound frame stands out among the shooter-heavy lineup. Singletary said Cooper's style is nothing like that of Darko Cohadarevic, last year's starting center.

"Darko was a finesse player, liked to step out and shoot jumpers. With Coop he likes to get in there, he likes to bang and he likes to dunk. He likes to rebound. That's exactly what we need."

I'm not going to get my hopes up, but if Cooper was anything like this, it would make me happy.

Miscellaneous:  Pretty slim pickings this morning, especially on the football ledger.  Nebraksa State Paper's Samuel McKewon has a pretty decent preview of the Big 12.  Not many mentions of Texas Tech, but it's a decent read . . . CT's Dave Matter writes about why he thinks that TAMU's Jerrod Johnson is better than MU's Blaine Gabbert (I would agree with Dave) and looks at the stats of Big 12 running backs, in particular OSU's Keith Totson Kendall Hunter . . .

2011 Recruiting Table:  After the jump is the updated recruiting table.  I'm working on updating each individual profile (probably this weekend).  Let me know if there are any errors or revisions that I need to make:

Seth, here is a thought about the average ranking numbers

that appear at the bottom of each column of the Recruiting Table…yeah, it is more work ;-) (I do not know how to work the published table but I have done some work with Microsoft Excel—I bet there are guys who blog here who have done great work with Excel—if you can use some help with these tables…there is a volunteer waiting in the wings to do what he can.)

It looks as if the ‘Averages’ row includes value = 0 for those not ranked. We know they are not zeros, and we know they will be ranked in time so the current value is temporary which gives us opportunity to simply ignore it until we have data.

Yet we do like to look at the Average and compare or use it to talk about where we are if only in response to some blok’s media piece about how we are doing compared to the rest of football. So there is value for having a somewhat clearer picture of the average.

I can think of two ways to do that, both have +’s and -’s, either will work, assign a null value and do not count toward the average, or assign an estimate or nominal value knowing that the value is to be updated later.

With the abundance of bright minds I see on this blog, I am sure there are other ideas.

After I read Courtney Linehan’s piece about the basketball team, I got the impression that the team is doing some of the coaching itself….

That's fine by me.

I put all of the numbers in an HTML table and I agree, we know those players will have some rating, but keep in mind that it’s very much unusual to have so many commits for Texas Tech at such an early stage. I’m not a math guy (I can add, subtract, multiply and divide, but that’s it) so I’d need some help. We could also work off of a google spreadsheet that could be shared?

My apologies for being behind the current programing...

how do we share a google spreadsheet….I am wondering if it uses the same functions as Excel.

Anyway, help me get a copy so I can putz with it and maybe come up with some numbers that make sense.

Do you have a gmail account?

I think you’ll need that and then we can set up a shared spreadsheet, and yes, it’s pretty much just like an excel spreadsheet. Feel free to email me (doubletnation@gmail.com) when you get this done and then we’ll go from there.
