Double-T Nation Daily Diatribe :: 06.07.10

Back From a Long Weekend: Sorry to be out on such a big weekend. From what I can tell, nothing really "happened", but there's lots of stuff going on, especially in terms of conference realignment. I'll get to what I can this morning.
SBN Regional Sites: SBN has created regional sites and a couple of the head-honchos were interviewed by the New York Times over the weekend. To see a list of those regional sites that are currently up, go here. There will be more regional sites added (the list looks fairly East Coast biased). As an aside, I've been getting the advertisement show up on the right side of DTN about a SBN meet-up and was curious if any Dallas-based folks could make it this Thursday. Here are the details:
Thursday, June 10th, 2010
5:00 - 8:00 PM
Frankie's Sports Bar and Grill (Uptown location)
3227 McKinney, Dallas, TX 75204
If anyone is interested, I'll make the trek from deep East Texas to say hello, but I won't get there until sometime after 6:00 p.m.
Conference Realignment: Yahoo! Sports Dan Wetzel has a very interesting article about how the Big 12 screwed itself by not agreeing to a Plus-One in the college football playoff:
It’s clear now that Delany used opposition to a football playoff not to preserve some bit of "tradition." His expansion plans clearly indicate he cares nothing about that. It certainly wasn’t done for the sake of aiding Big Ten football, since a playoff with on-campus home games likely would’ve helped his teams.
The goal was to starve out the Big 12, Big East and even the ACC of the hundreds of millions a playoff would’ve given them and thus turn the future of college sports into a battle of television sets.
And then Wetzel has this to say about Big Ten Commish Dan Delany working behind the scenes to create complete and utter chaos:
Why Beebe and Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese ever felt safe with Delany is a mystery. The guy is an assassin. He’s always been public about his desire to do whatever he feels is best for the Big Ten (or at least his "legacy").
Rather than helping him block the Plus One, they should’ve been explaining to their presidents that a full playoff was imperative to survival.
And let’s forget the ridiculous notion that the presidents are vehemently opposed to a playoff. The presidents will do whatever their commissioner says. It’s always been that case and the expansion chaos proves it. Ohio State’s Gee has been an anti-playoff guy in part because of "missed class time," even if none would be missed under a playoff that takes place during semester break.
Most have heard that Baylor is attempting a power plays as well, including the idea of trying to substitute Baylor for Colorado and forcing Texas to take Baylor or forgo the possible deal to the Pac-10. The Waco Tribune's John Werner has all of the details including Baylor President Ken Starr feeling confident:
In a column submitted Sunday for the Waco Tribune-Herald, Baylor University President Ken Starr said he is fighting to keep Baylor from being separated from its Big 12 rivals, "working to counter a significant and historic threat to the university." He said he is "guardedly optimistic" of success.
"The situation is extremely fluid right now," he wrote. "It is our understanding that the Pac-10 Conference may be preparing to invite six Big 12 members to join a proposed 16-team megaconference.
"Recent news reports have indicated that Baylor’s stock is rising and that it could be included among the teams invited to form a new conference," he wrote. "What we do know is this: The Lone Star state schools of the Big 12 should stick together. That’s what’s in the best interests of Baylor, of Texas and of our own community, here in Waco."
I talked to a Baylor alum this weekend and he didn't think that it would be the worst thing ever for Baylor to be in a lesser conference. His words, not mine, but I think there's something to that and I think this comes to down to television markets and if the Pac-10 has to choose between Colorado (Denver market) vs. Baylor (? market). Essentially this comes down to which school U of Texas feels that they need to take with them and my guesses aren't worth much at all.
One more thing. I've never researched the Permanent University Fund and I'm going to do some reading about the PUF over the summer. If anyone has any additional links, then please feel free to drop a comment or send me an email. I think I want to be more educated about this.
I again cannot recommend the story-stream at the SB Nation page to follow any and all updates regarding conference realignment. I'd also recommend following the Texas Tech football page at SBN so you can see who is writing about Texas Tech around the SBN network.

New Chaplain: From what I can tell, head coach Tommy Tuberville has hired a new chaplain, Steve Grant, a former NFL player. I don't know if I have a strong opinion about this one way or another. I've never been a part of a team with a chaplain and just wonder if a chaplain is just a guy to talk to other than the coach. I really don't know how this is going to work.
Steele Experience Chart: Phil Steele has his new and improved experience chart and Texas Tech sits at #63.

Knight and Wooden: For those of you who don't know, legendary coach John Wooden passed away over the weekend and LAJ's Courtney Linehan talked with head coach Pat Knight about Wooden's encounter with a younger PK:
"Coach Wooden, I'll never forget, he was sitting on the aisle and his wife was next to him," Knight said. "He had me sit down, introduced me to his wife, 'Hey Nell, this is Bobby's youngest son, Pat.' He had me sit down between them and talked to me for 15, 20 minutes, signed my ticket. He was nice as could be."
"He talked to me about my dad's team, how well he'd done. I'll always remember he talked to me about my dad's defense while I was sitting there with him."
Miscellaneous: CT's Steve Walentik has a Big 12 Summer Power Poll and has the Red Raiders at #9 heading into next season:
The Red Raiders have a strong enough core, with guard John Roberson and forward Mike Singletary, to finish in the top half of the conference standings and vie for a beth in the NCAA Tournament, but that was true last season, as well, when they went 4-12 in conference play. Defense continues to be a problem for Pat Knight's team, which yielded 81.5 points during the Big 12 season, and I don't think it's gotten consistent enough contributions from the supporting cast. Tech is also lacking an interior threat to keep opponents honest, and I'm not sure Cooper is going to provide one. Until I see the Red Raiders play better defense and get more balanced production, I'm going to have my doubts, particularly when the rest of the coaches in the southern half of the conference all have better track records for success.
I'll have a bit more on the basketball team, hopefully later in the week.

Spencer Reflects on 2010: LAJ's George Watson had a lengthy talk with head coach Dan Spencer regarding being just short of an NCAA invite:
"I think I looked at the glass half empty on Monday because of how close we were and that we were just a win or two away," Spencer said. "But as I got farther away from it … I started to think about where the program has come from and where we’re going. To finish fifth out of 10 in a power league, I think we’ve seen marked improvement. I feel good about this club this year and that we put ourselves in a position, even with the injuries on the mound, to compete for a regional."
Watson does a good job of running down who will more than likely be around after the MLB draft and at the end of the day, Spencer will need to replace almost all of his pitching staff:
"We’re hoping we can get enough innings early in the spring and create enough competition and pressure and adversity in the fall that they’ll be ready to go when conference rolls around," said Spencer, who eyes having three separate weekend starters and a closer, none of whom occupy more than one of those roles. "I am concerned about the youth and newness of our pitching next year, but that will pay dividends. Whether or not they take the next step next year remains to be seen, but they are the future."
Watson also compiles how each of next year's commitments did in 2010 (high school or JUCO) and talks with P Chad Bettis about looking forward to today's MLB Draft.

If Baylor
manages to screw this up for us, or the powers that be screw it up on Baylor’s behalf and we end up in a dissolved Big 12 after being rejected by the PAC-10 I will be PISSED. I know that if their one star player had stayed healthy they were projected to be above 500 last season, but what about after he graduates. I know Colorado was awful last year too, but they at least have some history and a viewing market of their own(Denver) as Seth mentioned.
I’m not sure how I expect all of this realignment mess to work out. I’m getting to the point where I want to just stop reading about it and let someone tell me when it’s done. The article I read about Baylor trying to push its way into the PAC-10 deal just made that worse. I can’t say I wouldn’t want the same thing to happen for Tech if they hadn’t been mentioned in the initial ‘offer’, but Baylor has really gotten under my skin for some reason on this.
Baylor
I can see why Baylor wants into the mix but I’m not sure they will get that wish. Being a private school won’t help them with their argument and having almost zero market share won’t help either. Football is why Baylor will face problems as home games never sell out and are rarely televised. Colorado on the other hand has much more to offer. Baylor does bring good basketball but everybody knows football is where the viewership comes from. Personally, I like having Baylor around and I can totally simpathsize with them. If anything we as red raiders know what it’s like to be disrespected.

I went to two colleges - Tech and Baylor
After several years at Tech, going to a Baylor football game was a joke. Nothing at all like a Tech game with most students more involved in socializing rather than watching the game. While I still care about Baylor, I have wondered for years whether they wouldn’t enjoy it more if they were in a conference where they actually had a prayer of winning anything. It can’t possibly be fun for anyone to be crushed on a regular basis, and to have no hope for long-term growth and improvement.

Steve Grant
TT introduced Grant at a Red Raider Club event in Amarillo on 5/27 (I’m not suggesting this was the unveiling). At that time TT said the Chaplain would be someone the players could go to when they are having family troubles, girl troubles, etc. He stated that 2/3 of college football players come from families with only one parent or no parents at all, many are first generation college students, and too many kids fall through the cracks and are gone before the end of their first year. He also claimed to be among the first (if not the first) Div. 1 coach to institute the practice of a team chaplain many years ago and is a firm believer. He said, “Obviously, the guys will be able to talk to Steve about things that they never would come to me to talk about or never would go to their position coach to talk about.”
Seems to me like a great use of resources. These guys are, after all, just big kids and need direction from positive influences. God knows they’ll get plenty of influence from negative sources.

Well....
just call this the wicked voice of a depraved soul, but I’d feel a lot better if in addition to his primary role he did a little “witnessing” on how to play some smash-mouth come-to-Jesus defense too.
Chaplin ?
Overall I like the idea, but calling someone a team Chaplin doesnt that convey a religious note. I know Tubbs is a religious man and I would assume many of the players would be as well, but what about the guys that are not religious, wouldnt they be turned off. Afterall this is a state school. Couldnt this guy just carry a mentor or life coach title and how he interacts with the young men is their business but the title of Chaplin sounds like there will be an old Catholic priest hanging out on the sidelines.
Seems to work for Mark Richt
I would argue he has as good, if not better track record than Tuberville or Leach.

I think this is about culture....
We are a West Texas Institution smack dab in the heart of the bible belt. The vast majority of students coming to Tech have religous affiliations, and I would suspect the same applies to our athletes. If the only outlet for counseling was the secular options available through the universities counseling dept, that would not be in line with the needs of the majority of our students and athletes. At a time when many programs are in the news for athlete crime, I have zero problem with any attempt by our program to brodcast a positive example to our student athletes…..religous or otherwise. Just my 2 cents.

All branches of the military
have Chaplains…they are a federal insitution, the military…it works, it is a good thing…military chaplains do more than practice religion…they have a long standing tradition and legacy of helping people.
I think it matters little if one has a chaplain at TTU that is called chaplain. If he is a good guy, and I bet he is, he will be able to help and will help anyone with any problem…the thing that will make the most difference is his reputation amongst the players, his rapport, his approachability, and his adaptability.

Re: Chaplain
We always had a chaplain in high school. But it was always a player, not somebody outside of the team. I like the idea, but I always thought Bird was the unofficial team chaplain……

Without Questions, There are limited Resources...
I’m fine with a team chaplain. I think we don’t give the guys who aren’t religious enough credit to realize this is for those who are. It’s not an ostracizing event if you’re not going to participate. And those on the team who howl (if any) likely have an agenda beyond, “I don’t participate and I feel left out…”
As for Baylor, I hope they are included. Baylor hasn’t always been this bad. They had our number during the Grant Teaff years and there’s nothing to say they can’t again at some point. For most of the 70s and 80s they hovered around .500 with some pretty stellar seasons thrown in (sound familiar?). Not every team needs to be a powerhouse to be in a major conference. See Wazzu, Stanford, Wake Forest, Duke, etc. Having a private school is not a bad thing, and it would probably make Stanford happy to know there’s a brother on that front.
Besides, our series record with the Bears is 35-32-1. So before Leach got here, Baylor had the edge.
92,
Thats just the point is that those that dont feel included will know that it is not for them. I agree that the culture of Lubbock and I would say that even a higher majority of the atheletes are religious, but why not incorporate more than one answer to the problems of eveyday life. I guess it boils down to what type of guy the Chaplin ends of being, he might be have a vast array of tools to deal with problems but sounds like from his wikipedia page that he was someone that couldnt handle life until he found religion
Look at it like this…there are a lot of options avail to a student-athlete to receive non-religious Tech-funded counseling/support on campus if they want it. The chaplain just gives those guys with a desire for religious counseling/support the avenue. It doesn’t step on anyone’s toes (except maybe the ACLU). Much ado about not a lot, from my perspective.
As long as he doesn't mind being called "Rabbi" by the Jewish players
I’m all for it. The Catholic players will still have to go to confession though. Only Rome (or Rome’s representative in Lubbock) can officially forgive their sins.
Holy cow Batman!

I don’t mind the team chaplain, even being anti-religious as I am. Unless he’s overstepping his role and creating conflict by trying to “save” the players who don’t want to be “saved”, I’m all for it.
player requested
Steve Grant prayed with the team before the game at least once last year. Our youth minister is a friend of Steve’s. I don’t know whether it was TT’s idea or the teams to have a chaplain, but several of the team members requested Steve for the position. It is my understanding that they will have Bible study once a week but I do not know if it is required attendance for the team. This information was given to me in the spring.

Maybe an offer for NU to Big10 already?
It may also be just more BS but it’s worth a look.

Glamour trio of Michigan, Penn State & Ohio State?
They set the bar ridiculously low in the Midwest for using the adjective “Glamorous”. I can’t think of three duller traditional powers.

If you had been told last Wednesday morning that the Big 12 would be gone by the end of this week
What would your reaction have been? It sure appears that the Big 10 have abandoned their deliberate approach since the Pac 10 placed their bid for UT and her 5 dwarfs (sure, not so funny for we Red Raiders fans, but that is exactly what is happening here). I just hope to God UT decides to kiss the right Prince (the Pac 10).

What is the reward for the school with the largest income in sports,
and by a significant margin, to change their deal and start sharing their money ? Isn’t that what Texas would be doing ?
I don’t get it….
women should put pictures of missing husbands on beer cans
UT's share of Big 12 TV money was less than 12 million
They stand to get a 10 million dollar TV money raise just by joining the Pac 10. The key to TV money in the new Big 10 Network world of college football is cable households. Broadcast TV makes money from ratings. Higher ratings pay higher advertising rates. Cable networks make most of their money from cable rights fees. 2 cents per subscriber or whatever the going rate is for a cable sports network not named ESPN. The money game today is which teams bring the largest TV markets with them so the new Pac 16 network can have their cable network included in the most cable packages. Houston, San Antonio, Austin, Dallas/FW and Denver will be added to Phoenix, Tuscon, San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento, probably Las Vegas, Portland & Seattle. That’s a lot of homes carrying cable. All those homes will add up to huge money being split 16 ways.
UT will be doing much better by moving than by staying. Incompetence destroyed the Big 12. They should have created their TV network years ago when it was 1st suggested to them by the guy who started the Big 10 network.

It will take a while, but I think at some point I will come to look at college football with the same mild indifference I pay the NFL. I get the money thing and realize things change. But when one school can pretty much dictate the potential athletic viability of another it leaves a nasty taste. The fact that we NEED Texas to bring us with them bugs me. And make no mistake, we truly need them to include us in any deal. Otherwise we are no different than UNLV or Ball State in national relevance.
College football was never intended to turn into this gargantuan money machine. And it kind of bums me out that things like research dollars and academic reputation and legislative influence has a hand in what athletic conference we live in. Conferences were created based on nothing more than geography and rivalry back in the dark ages. Not anymore. It’s all about ratings and revenue now. Blech.
