Around SBN: The Lakers Are a Broken Model

A Big 12 source said that officials from Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech, in a move sensing Nebraska's determination to join the Big Ten, have already met to pledge their solidarity. The first choice is to save the Big 12, but if that's not possible, officials from those schools are prepared to merge with the Pac-10.

The source said the meetings included the chancellors, presidents and athletic directors from the three schools. Not present was a Baylor contingent. Baylor is locked in a battle with Colorado for what is presumed to be the sixth spot along with Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State that would create a 16-team superconference with the Pac-10 schools. Colorado is believed to be favored by the Pac-10.

Heard about this on RP.com of all places...

Apparently this pretty historic meeting took place at the Four Season in Austin today.

Yep, it doesn’t take a smart person to figure out that this deal is pretty much done.

This has been the craziest 6 months from the end of a bowl game that I can recall. Just insane amount of stuff, not at all related to things on the field/court.

Two things

One, I hate it that we are depending on those we hate, Hance, Myers, and ut.
Two, would it not be funny if MZ does not get an invite to the Big 10 we we are gone to the PAC 10.

I posted this question on another discussion too...

With the new conferences taking effect in 2012 does that mean we play two more seasons as the Big 12? Thanks!

I think that's right.

We don’t start until the 2012 season.

And as an aside

TE Jace Amaro got a new grade w/ ESPN (3* and 78) and LB Blake Dees, LB/DL Devon Hocutt and WR Derek Edwards all got 3 stars with Rivals. The only players that haven’t received a grade from Rivals are DE James Castleman and LB Terrell Hartsfield and OG Ton Morales hasn’t received a grade from ESPN, but he should be a 4*.

The Big PAC 16

is an exciting prospect, but I’m sad to see the demise of the Big 12. I’m also sad to see Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas and Kansas State thrown under the bus. Missouri missing out on the Big 10 = JUSTICE.

I think this will result in Congress getting involved. There are big dollars and hurt feelings here that will have long term ramifications.

The good news on the current commits seems like a quaint topic after all the realignment gloom and BOOM! Still, the recruiting prospects only appear to be getting better.

Says right now it doesn’t appear that there is a Big 10 slot for Missouri. I know it’s not very nice but after what the Missouri Governor said about our academics there is a part of me that would enjoy that scenario…what is the german word for it…schadenfreude?

by Austin, Tx on Jun 9, 2010 9:38 PM CDT reply actions

Wishful thinking best case scenario

Would anyone else like to see the PAC 10 commissioner continue his proactive shrewd maneuvering and send out an invite to the Mighty Irish. This would give the Southwest PAC two traditional powers in each of the 8 team divisions Oklahoma, Texas and USC, Notre Dame. It’s not quite the SEC but would make the conference a little more exciting and competitive. Notre Dame and SC already have an established tradition.

by Red_Raided on Jun 9, 2010 9:40 PM CDT reply actions

To do that

Someone else would have to be left out. Odds are it would be OSU or us.

i dont’ see notre dame passing up the big10 for the new conference all the way across the country. other than usc, that would bind them to too many non-traditional games. it’s either big10 or stay independent for them.

The plan is to ask for 2 BCS slots, one for each division champ & no Championship game

If the east & west winners are #‘s 1 and 2 they’ll play each other in the BCS title game. Ted Miller on ESPN has the details here:

then we need our Big 12 Championship in the next two years. I don’t wanna hear from Aggie that we “couldn’t get it done” and move on to another conference.

I like the idea of two teams getting to be eligible for the BCS

However, it will be but a few years (I think 2020 at the latest) for the BCS to die and a playoff scenario be formulated and implemented. In that case, there will be at least two, maybe four teams from the BIG-PAC 16 (or just BIG-PAC, thus allowing for any future realignment alternatives) that each year could be included in that playoff. If there is a playoff, it will probably be set up like the basketball playoff, with teams being seeded and playing according to that seeding. Imagine a 16-team playoff, 15-game playoff system that actually provides a real National Champion. In that scenario, any team will be capable of winning it all if they can be one of the 16 teams. I would really like to see that happen. Lots of dreams, but it isn’t something that has not already been mentioned.

Considering how much trouble Mr. Myers had keeping his mouth shut about a game against Alabama, they must’ve gagged him after this meeting.

As soon as the ink dries on signatures of the expected contracts.

Once the powers from each school sign the agreements, I think Gerald will step down, saying he helped bring this about, thinking this would be his “legacy”. There is no way whatsoever Myers will be able to keep up with the ADs from the PAC-10 schools. Before it gets too deep, I just feel he will tender his resignation and ride…waddle….off into the sunset.

The folks at KU, KSU, and I St

Are taking it pretty hard, judging by the blogs. Baylor doesn’t really have a good blog but I know they’re bummed as well. There’s gonna be some serious angst in the final games against NU and Mizzou. To quote Ruff, “Better bring your big-boy pads.” Just one more reason for us to show some west Texas hospitality to MU in Lubbock next year.

For that matter, the whorns have played a big role in this breakup, even if most of it was under the table. Taking the B12 crown from them in the final two years will be sweet justice. Then their ‘Tech problem’ will have a new meaning.

Credit where credit is due

It seems to me that if not for UT’s Tech problem, we might be included in this deal. I hate to say it, but they’ve been a good ally in this process. It could be that they actually have a little respect for us, we may owe it to Harrell and Crabtree.

by ABQ Red Raider on Jun 10, 2010 12:34 AM CDT reply actions

Mostly just lucky circumstances

The whorns don’t care two whits about us. But the political fight to dump us is just more than they need to go through under the circumstances. Under different circumstances – say instead of the Pac10, they get an offer to join the Big Ten along with Notre Dame and double/triple their income – they would do what they would do – look out for themselves.

We were just lucky our name starts with Texas.

I'm not sure there is a political fight at all

I think Larry Scott saw a chance to bring in a division that was pretty much ready-made, so decided to invite all-in, with the exception of Baylor (I thnk he knew he couldn’t get the Pac-10 schools to approve a religious-affiliated private university), and added Colorado to even up the numbers (and get the Denver market). Putting the South 5 and Colorado in a division with Arizona and Arizona State left the Pac-8 in their own division, a scenario those schools really seem to enjoy, if their bloggers are any indication.

In many sports aTm is really good…but the one that really matters to anyone is football and we all know it. If the Aggies can’t win in the Big XII, I just don’t see it happening in the SEC. There are only two bad teams in that conference. They are comparable right now to Miss State or Kentucky. Florida, Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, LSU…I just don’t see them ever winning anything in football over there for decades.

I think this has as much to do with the Aggies disdain for the advantages and power that UT wields as much as anything else. They just want out of the shadow.

New Big 12...ish

I guess Mizzou, KU, KSU, ISU and Baylor will need to go look for some dance partners.
My guess is that the old SWC schools like SMU, TCU and UH get a look. Tulsa and Colorado State wouldn’t be a bad add either. I really see any other reasonable candidates. It will be interesting to see if the conference is able to maintain it’s automatic bid to a BCS bowl and current bowl tie-ins.

What stinks about these massive regional conferences spanning multiple time zones is the almost negligible opportunty for a rivalry. Rivalries are born out of proximity more than anything else. Players from the major Texas schools either played together or against most of the other players in high school. Families and neighbors either went to one of three or four schools. How in the world do you work up any animosity towards Oregon State? Or Washington (which puts me in a connundrum…UDub is my “other” team)? You don’t…It’s taken 14 years to develop a sort of rivalry with OSU and we play every year. We’ll only play the West division teams every four years at most. And at home once every eight years.

Great for revenue, great for perceived prestige, great for TV. But one of college football’s biggest allures is the tradtion. This pretty much throws that out the window. Do we really want to be subjected to watching Wazzu v. Stanford or Okie St v. Oregon or Cal v. aTm on the new network?

I’m sure in the end this will all be fine, but I personally don’t like the idea of these massive geographic conferences.

What sucks the most

Is that I hate declaring defeat like this. I hate saying, “our conference despite winning 2 Titles during its short existance (three if the NCAA sanctions bite USC in the ass), we still tanked” Tanked because of a failure of leadership of a guy like Dan Bebee. Fu¢K!!!! I blame him.

Knowing that our conference grew out of the tradition of the Big Eight Conference and the ashes of the SWC, makes it tougher to swallow. To think that one of the founding members of the Big8 Conference, was the one that pulled the Jenga Stick that brought all of this crashing to the ground. Fu¢k, you Osborne, Pelini, et al…
