Recruiting on the High Plains :: 2012 LB Derek David and DL Logan David
When you're talking about 2012 recruiting in July of 2010, then something might be going right. Although reports are tentative, head coach Tommy Tuberville secured the commitment of the David Bros., Derek and Logan. LB Derek David is only a sophomore and projected to be the #1 linebacker in the 2012 class and the top-rated defender in the state of Texas. DL Logan David will be attending Blinn College for the 2010 and 2011 seasons and then (hopefully) commit with David in the 2012 class with Derek. Let's get to it.

So much more after the jump.
The Player Speaks: I've been waiting on this article for two weeks (it's published in the paper, but not available online for two weeks), from the Rockdale Reporter where Rockdale HS Athletic Director Jeff Miller talked about why they, and OL LaRaven Clark chose Texas Tech:
All three had different reasons for choosing Texas Tech.
“LeRaven really enjoyed the town,” said Rockdale Athletic Director Jeff Miller, who accompanied Clark and Derek David to Lubbock. “And he liked the spread out campus that didn’t seem closed in like some others.
“I know all three enjoyed the new coaching staff and the direction the program is going in and especially (head coach) Tommy Tuberville.”
All three were enthralled with their recruiter James Willis, who was the linebacker coach for national champion Alabama and is now the Red Raider defensive coordinator.
“I know they felt real comfortable with him and I know Logan really liked him. They all want that comfort zone. They are not caught up in the big time.
“It’s a great fit for all of them.”
A couple of things here, first, it appears that Miller is really looking after these guys, which I would think is a good thing. Second, their recruiter was defensive coordinator James Willis, and they were "enthralled" with him and they were comfortable with him. That sort of thing bodes well for the future. Finally, UT defensive coordinator Will Muschamp called Miller the morning after Derek committed:
Miller received a call from Muschamp about David t he morning after he committed to Texas Tech.
I wonder how that conversation went?
There are a handful of other articles mentioning Derek. During the first part of last year, the Temple Daily News profiled the David brothers and their impact prior to last year:
Football runs deep in the David blood. In addition to the current standouts, Skyler was a defensive lineman who graduated last season and James is an eighth grader who scored five touchdowns last week in a game against Giddings. Two other brothers and the lone girl, Brianna, aren't yet middle-school age.
"They are all good kids," Rockdale coach Jeff Miller said of the family. "The parents and grandmother are great supporters of our program. They are good people and we are glad they live in Rockdale."
The bickering between siblings is usually light-hearted in nature.
"They are at each other all the time, but it's all in good fun," Miller said. "Logan had 17 tackles in one game. The next week, Derek had one more and Logan has been mad about it ever since. Derek is often telling Logan, 'If you'd just let another guy go through, I could get more tackles.'"
That's not likely to happen. This entire defense hates to see anybody get past it.
"We just do that to push each other," Derek said. "We like to see who gets more tackles. We try to get there before the other person does. I think that's why we've been successful."
There was also this Rockdale Reporter article about now that Derek has been named as one of the top players in the state (Derek is the #2 player in the state of Texas for the 2012 recruiting class) his life has changed as a result of his notoriety.
Last but not least, I found some track results and it appears that fellow Texas Tech commit WR Derek Edwards (high jump: 6'2"; and triple jump: 44'8.25") and Derek compete in the same district and Derek jumped 19'10" in the long jump and 40' 3.5" in the triple jump.
Video: You're going to have to get a bit creative to find video of both Logan and Derek. You can find Logan's video on his ESPN profile. I'm pretty sure that Derek is the middle linebacker in that film, but you can definitely find Derek in the defensive highlights from LeRaven Clark's video. I believe Derek is #6.
Seth C Update: Video. Wow.
Scouting Report: There appears to be a bit of difference in Logan's weight. If he truly is close to 300 pounds rather than the 255 listed on a couple of the recruiting sites, then you've got a really nice player that can absolutely move. There's been a handful of questions about Logan and the fact that he doesn't have much of a recruiting profile or even appear to have a real offer. For a bit of a history, go to this DTN DD where we learn that Logan stated that he didn't want to attend college. I surmised that this may have been a grade situation and then we find out that Logan committed to play at Blinn College. Logan is talented in his own right, being named to The Old Coach's Class 3A All-State First Team and just by watching his video, he does appear to be a pretty nice player. Quick off the ball, a nice push and seems to create havoc along the line.
Derek is another story and you can see his natural talent especially in Clark's highlight film where Derek appears to be making tackles all over the place. For a guy his size and being as fast as he is, he looks to be the type of player that could be transcendent. That's a bold claim for a guy that probably just got his drivers license, but he looks pretty good.
Derek and Logan, welcome to Texas Tech and Git Your Guns Up!
The 2012 Class: I'm thinking that we wait until some of the 2012 rankings come out until giving some averages. Derek doesn't even have an ESPN profile.

Is it possible that Derek committed to Tech just to get his brother on here? Then he will leave us for some big name school close to signing day and thus ensure his brother, who is less highly ranked, can play at a major Div I university?
I’m typically not a pessimist but this has gone through my mind.
I don't think...
he would do that. From all indications he was sold on Tuberville and Willis. I also think having a brother on the same team probably makes him more of a lock for Tech. Hopefully Tech has a good season and both these guys stay committed.

Leach Who?
This shows that Tubs and his staff over the next couple of years might make us say “Leach Who”? After all, it all starts with recruiting.
Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
Do you honestly think that Tubs even comes here without Leach? Do you think the 61K stadium instead of the 44K stadium we have before Leach got here has anything to do with recruiting? What about the other facility upgrades? Sure the program being part of the big 12 would have made some strides with whatever coach, but winning 9 games a season average for the last 5 years is a huge plus. I think Tubs has proved to be a better recruiter and fundraiser already, but the program he has to work with is all Leach.
I’m getting sick of this short sided ignoring of Leach’s accomplishments. Most wins in the big 12 outside UT and OU is no small accomplishment. The reason people know who we are and care about it right now is b/c of Mike Leach.

Move on
Logan555 – I said nothing bad about Leach. I really liked the guy. But notice, I used the past tense. At some point in time, isn’t it time to move on?

You missed a 5, but anyways
I’ll say this, I love your enthusiasm for Tubs and our program. Do I feel right now Tubs can take us even further, YES! Do I think your comments on his recruitings skills have merit, YES! Just know your roots. “Leach who” will never make sense to me. He turned a little known program to a national story. I say this in the same way that I’m sure some of the wiser (read older) members on here have the same feelings about coaches from the 70s when Tech was really good, etc. A program takes time to build. I think you would be hard pressed to argue that any coach did more for Tech’s program than Leach, ever.
Why would I want to move on from watching YouTube videos of us scoring 70 points on NU or Leach’s speach at halftime of the MN game? WHY? I love that stuff. It pumps me up. The analogy for me is when Mack Brown retires, does that mean UT people move on and forget the national championship runs and games? HELL NO. You buy videos of that sh*t and put up posters etc. You wear that on your sleeve as a fan forever. At Tech we didn’t win a national or big 12 championship yet, but my emotion feels the same about the 2008 season, MN game, Cal game, TCU game, OSU game from 08, etc etc etc.
So while my money ($800 for season tickets), support (Tubs all the way baby), and enthusiasm (tailgaiting, tech parties, arguing to aggies, driving 10 hr round trips to LBK, etc) for Tubs and Tech has certainly moved on, my love of Leach and what he did for us will neve rmove on. I will remember chanting Welker and wearing a pirate costume on the front row while in college when I’m 80 years old. Hell b/c I was in college when Leach was there, I might never have more vivid memories of a coach. What’s wrong with Viva Leach, Viva Tech, and Viva Tubs? My fandome is big enough for them all.

Here is an add-on to logan's very well worded and passionate commentary.
The program has made great strides in the past ten years…Mike Leach was HC during that time, he gets credit for his contribution to the growth. I doubt there are 3 out of 100 TTU fans who think otherwise.
Mike Leach did not do everything that was done to get the program to where it is today…does the Raider Nation have the ability to credit the others, in what ever capacity, who contributed to the current state of the TTU football program.

When said person is damn good and ready to move on, I'm sure they will.
While you may not have intended to speek badly of Mike Leach, you did.

I doubt...
any red raider with knowledge will ever question the value Mike Leach was for Texas Tech. Mike built the foundation for all the benefits our football team and fans have enjoyed the last 10 years. This is one coach who really made this program known the rest of the country.

Ditto
While we do move on to cheer on the new regime, none of us fans who actually understand Leach’s significance to where Tech football presently sits will ever “let go”, so to speak. I never let go of who I thought first put Tech football on the map: E.J. “The Beast” Holub, Donnie “The Golden Palomino” Anderson, David Parks and Tom Wilson. They were the first really significant Tech players to bring notice to Tech. Others have earned Tech recognition, as well. But nobody totally changed the outlook for present and future Red Raiders as did Mike Leach. We shall forever be indebted to him. But we know the game must continue and we are ready to continue on by putting our full support and energy behind whomever are the present coaches and players. Long live the Matador. WRECK ’EM, TECH!

Your point is well taken TTpilk645, but you did make a difference in your thought.
They were talking about the HC, and the work he did not the football players…so how do we think of J.T.King who brought TTU into the SWC, who recruited and coached Anderson, Parks, Wilson, etal…who is remembering the plateau established by Carlen, then handed off to a string of guys who could not quite get it done…in their day, these coaches were program devlopers…
The original post was right, when enough success is gained, there will be a bit of who is Mike Leach…he simply asked if it was possible…and the answer is yes…just as we are extolling the success of Mike Leach.

J.T. King
In my opinion, J.T. King was never a very good coach, so I disagree with you there. He recruited well, but just happened to be there when all that happened. Plus, he stayed around WAY too long as AD. I and many other Tech fans were soooo glad when he retired. Even Myers was a breath of fresh air after King. This is where I am totally opposite to you in thought. So, where a head coach is concerned, no other coach did as much as Leach FOR the Texas Tech brand. Carlen, had he been allowed to stay MIGHT have been able to reach that upper plateau, but he was sent packing by our esteemed admin (sound familiar?). The success of those players mentioned while AT Tech and AFTER they left Tech was important to the exposure and recognition of the Tech name at a time when they were building up to compete at a higher level than ever before as a young SWC member. That is why I mentioned them. They did that, not King. Had he been a very good coach, Tech could have been a very competitive team for many years instead of just becoming good for a few short years. King did not build up the program, even after recruiting some excellent players, but allowed it to languish at the lower levels during their formative years in the old SWC. Just being realistic here. Think as you will. So shall I.
TTpilk Psalm 117:
1 ¶ O praise the LORD, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people.
2 For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the LORD endureth for ever. Praise ye the LORD.
Didn't say J.T.King was a good coach, I did give him credit for what he did.
King did bring the program to respectability in the SWC, 57% win in league play, he built the program in that sense. His recruiting was pretty good for a while and resulted in national attention if only for the guys who went into the pros as high draft choices….he had two extremely high picks…that attention helped the program as well. Just as it would today with any of our players going into the pros as top picks. He also has a pretty nice list of 1st Team All-Americans—when there was but one list.
The University thought well enough of him to instill for a time the J.T.King award for most improved football player…I don’t know if that is still in place.
I think that is a creditble contribution given the jump from Border Conference the SWC and the recruiting rules in place at the time which heavily favored the more established programs. I am not saying he was a good coach.
I think Pete Cawthorn did a lot for TTU as well…
women should put pictures of missing husbands on beer cans
You are right.
King did do a lot for Tech, but he may have overstayed his welcome, as would have been done by Leach if he remained past his actual ability to win and lead, however long that may have been. I do think, like others, that Leach may have left a legacy that will not be matched soon. If Tubs does that and exceeds the accomplishments of Leach, we all know it will be a well deserved achievement, one which I hope he attains. I am for Tech football, basketball, etc. Anyone taking their team up another notch is OK by me, unless he starts getting too crazy (Woody Hayes?). Cawthon was probably the first really good coach at Tech. While he, Carlen and, yes even he—-King, did lift up the program, Leach’s ability to keep Tech in the spotlight for several years, near the top for a couple of them, sets him apart. As I said, I hope a coach will surpass all of those accomplishments (Tubs,, maybe?). My hope is Tech becomes a year-to-year mainstay in the top 10, with multiple championship trothies to put on display.
TTpilk Psalm 117:
1 ¶ O praise the LORD, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people.
2 For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the LORD endureth for ever. Praise ye the LORD.
You and I are solidly on the same page !!!

Saying nothing bad about Leach, but UT fans are thinking...
hey, what a minute now, this is not the way it works; #1 linebackers from Texas are supposed to be Longhorns right? Well if not Longhorns, Sooners right?
I can't help
but think that having guys like The Jeep (Willis) and Tubbs recruiting defensive players gives us INSTANT cred with these kids.
The guy (LB Coach) just off a National Championship and an SEC (defensive minded) coach makes these guys INSTANTLY take notice.
Im starting to think that Simon the Drawring Kid (Neal Brown) and Sonny Cumbie and staff are gonna REALLY have to work to keep up the Defensive recruiters.

I relish the thought that the Red Raiders might be the "Bully" of the Big12 ..it could happen..
Agree Tech defensive performance should show a marked uptick. Resulting in better recruits and more opportunity for said recruits to get to the next level. Neat.

What's it worth to ya?
Question:
Would you trade OUT of being one of the top THREE offenses in the NCAA year in and year out for, let’s say, being THE top offense in, just the Big XII (small 12)(big <12)

Let's keep the offense production we have
And hope the defense gets better and better. Right now we have an offense that outscores most opponents. It has only been stopped completely a handful of times (Alabama 2005, TCU 2004). So the better our defense is, we will blowout more opponents & maybe win more of the under 20 points for each team games than we have the last 10 years. With a top 10 defense we stop losing in Stillwater every time. That much I know for sure. Okie State doesn’t so much beat us in Stillwater but outscore us. It’s always a touchdown or less difference. Whereas we crush them in Jones Stadium. Keep that foot pressed to the floor Neal Brown.
