Red Raider Gridiron :: Potts on O'Brien Watch List and Recruiting Tidbits

Red_raider_gridiron_-_tiltshift__resize_-_2__medium

Potts Named to Davey O'Brien Watch List:  As noted from TallMike's FanShot, QB Taylor Potts has been named to the Davey O'Brien Watch List.   LAJ's Adam Zuvanich writes that outsiders seem to favor Potts over QB Steven Sheffield, despite the fact that most Texas Tech fans feel the opposite:

Count me among those who think Potts will prevail in the preseason competition, just like he did the year before under Mike Leach. Potts has a better upside, with a bigger build and a stronger arm, and I think he'll turn out to be the better quarterback.

And while I can admit that Sticks ended up having the better season in 2009, last year was last year. The upcoming season provides a new start under a new coaching staff, and the guess here is that the guy who liked so bad at times last season will be a new-look quarterback out to prove he's much better than people might think.

RP.com's Steve Pitts also talked with Potts (his interview with Sheffield is to happen later):

Potts’ character and humility really showed when talked about the actual "Air it Out" competition. While everybody was giving it his best shot to win, he said, "it was really just a matter of hitting Wheaties cereal boxes mounted as targets on golf carts" as they crisscross the field at progressively farther distances. I could make a comment about completing passes to receivers in fishing boats … but on second thought … nah.

This has been a strange ride.  Leach chose Potts and had all of the spring practices and fall practices to base his decision.  I've wondered if Sheffield is the absolute worst practice quarterback in the history of ever and Sheffield forced Leach's hand to choose Potts.  We all bemoaned the fact that Leach seemed to be blind by the fact that Sheffield out-played Potts, yet Leach stuck with Potts through most of last season.

My two cents:  I think we all need to buckle up for the thought that both Potts and Sheffield will see time this year.  We all seem to acknowledge Potts' faults, which include throwing off of his back foot (Harrell did the same thing), forcing the ball when he shouldn't, and sometimes just making bad decisions.  We also need to acknowledge Sheffield's faults, which include throwing way too many pick-six's and being a relatively fragile quarterback.  It's the fragile part that scares me about Sheffield and I wonder if he will be able to stand up to a full Big 12 season.

As a result, I've resigned myself to think that we're going to need them both this season and I'm okay with that.

Tubs is Scary:  ESPN's Jamie Newberg (I think he's the main recruiting-guy for ESPN) had a short blurb about head coach Tommy Tuberville making an impact on the recruiting trail and he talked with an anonymous Big 12 assistant coach, who had this to say about Tuberville and his A-Team:

"I think Tuberville and his staff are a little scary," one Big 12 assistant coach said. "They are really doing a great job in the state of Texas. He has brought that SEC mentality of grinding and grinding when it comes to recruiting. They are a lot tougher than I thought they would be and it's certainly different then [former coach Mike] Leach and his staff."

Peak in Lubbock:  LAJ's Don Williams talked with just-arrived LB Tahrick Peak.  For those of you catching up with Peak's story (click the link on his name to take you to his recruiting profile where you've got a bit of film and his back-story), he originally committed to Virginia Tech and now we have the answer regarding the SAT issue:

His academics met NCAA freshman eligibility requirements, but Peak said he was felled by a Virginia Tech enrollment standard that required scores of at least 400 on each section of the SAT. He said he met the standard on math and writing, but fell just short on the English section.

Peak talked about his relationship with OLB and DE coach Robert Prunty:

"I know him because he sent some guys pro from my high school,’’ said Peak, a standout at Pulaski County High School in Dublin, Va. "He told me I’d like it out here and to come on. I trust Coach Prunty, so I took his word for it.’’

And Peak sounds appreciative of the opportunity:

"It’s a new experience, and it’s a blessing,’’ Peak said Wednesday. "It puts me in position to see what I’m made of — on my own, away from my family. I’m having a blast out here. I love the players and love the coaches.’’

BON on the 7-on-7 Prospects:  BON's GhostofBigRoy was at last weekend's 7-on-7 Texas State Championship and he took note of two Texas Tech commits, QB Michael Brewer and TE Jace Amaro

Brewer:

Michael Brewer, Lake Travis QB (committed to Texas Tech): This format suits Brewer as well as any other quarterback in the event, with the possible exception of David Ash. Brewer is a bit undersized at a little over six feet tall, but the lack of pass rushers keeps him from having to worry about pass rusher disrupting his throwing lanes. Brewer consistently delivers the ball with accuracy moving to his right and has a strong arm for his size. The only mechanical concern is a slight one, as he drops the football and cocks, but otherwise has a quick release.

And Amaro:

Jace Amaro, SA Macarthur TE (committed to Texas Tech): As  much as any other prospect at the event, Amaro looks the part at every bit of 6-5 (possibly 6-6), combined with excellent athleticism and a lean frame that has plenty of room to fill out. A kid who flew under the radar as a junior, his combination of speed and  body control, as well as his ability to outmuscle and outjump opponents has him primed for a strong senior season and makes him a big-time threat in the red zone.

On one play down the seam, Amaro was able to adjust his body in the air and make a leaping catch at full extension. In addition to high-pointing the football in the end zone, the big Texas Tech commit showed his speed by being able to take the edge on opponents with a full head of steam.

Keep an eye on Amaro because he represents a strong early evaluation by Texas Tech compared with other major schools and could become a major force after he spends some time in a college weight program.

Tahrick Peak

I recommend everyone click over and read the article on Tahrick. I really like his attitude. To quote our brother Seth, “Tahrick, welcome to Texas Tech, and get your guns up!”

wow

170 tackles in one season? That’s unbelievable even on the high school level.

Sticks or get off the Potts

I have come to realize that at the heart of my loyalty to Steven Sheffield is the tendency that a lot of people have to cheer for the underdog. I just keep remembering that he is a walk on going up against a highly recruited gunslinger. How can you not pull for the guy? I had the same enthusiasm for Sonny Cumbie and Eric Morris, both walk ons who were given scholarships after the fact.

Can you believe we are less than two months away from the start of the season and there’s not a clear favorite at the most critical position on our offense? One guy is winning compeitions and being named to watch lists while the other is trying to heal from a potentially career ending injury. This is about to get very interesting.

All my love for Sheffield came from his 1st drive at the end of the 1st half vs New Mexico

We’re at home vs New Mexico. A New Mexico team that would go on to a 1-11 season in the Mountain West Conference. Potts led the team down the field for the inital score to start the game. Then………. Nothing. Not another point against one of the worst minor conference teams in America. I was watching the game in a tent at the ACL music festival in Austin, & they had the sound up on the Geargia-LSU game on the larger screen. So at the end of the half when I saw Sheffield warming up I thought, “Thank goodness the coaches are finally seeing what has been blindingly opvious to me. This Potts kid can’t play at this level”.

Sticks leads the team downfield in less than a minute for their second score of the game. In the second half he leads the offense on several more scoring drives.

I wasn’t thrilled reading about the game in the paper the next moring to hear that Sticks was put in due to a Potts injury rather than the coaches having made the decision to bench Potts due to his play.

Anyway I thought we had a very good football team last year, but we were playing at half speed in the games where Potts started or played a great deal. What is the point of having a high octane offense if your QB can’t run it efffectively?

Exactly

Sticks came in and put the team on his shoulders for that first drive, and every drive he was a part of from that point on. He may not have the power in the arm nor the size, but he has that “it” factor that is so important in football. IE- Tim Tebow, I still say to this day that he isn’t a very good quarterback skillwise, but he got his team to perform. Does Drew Brees has the size or arm power of other NFL quarterbacks? No he doesn’t, yet the Saints won the superbowl this year with him at the helm. Potts may be able to improve over the summer, but I cant help but feel like that “it” factor is something you either have or you don’t, it cant be taught over one offseason. Hell, the fans are the ones that support the team anyhow, let us vote!

I am still a Pott's guy.....

please don’t throw rotten potatoes at me other rotten veggies are OK.
I will admit to being dissapointed in his play last year, and very thankful we had Sticks.
I just feel like the change in coaching will effect Potts to the positive.

I would if we were still running the old airraid

But this is the new airraid where we need to have a qb with wheels. Potts has none

I love this Tubs video. I think it shows the overall mentality at Tech which makes our team so good with “less” talent. We know you have to work and fight for it. There is no room for superstars (unless you think you are Michael Crabtree and good luck on that).

The Potts/Sticks arguement is an interesting one. I support both as a Tech fan, but also, going off last years effers favor Sticks strongly. These idiots in the media don’t know the first thing about our team. Sticks owned that team when he stepped on the field, and he loved delivering. Of course Potts destroyed OU. can’t the season get here already???

Funny the Nick thing didnt make news, seems a coach renaming a player would have broke nationally. Funny how no one thought Leach was crazy, that shouldve been a big warning flag that the guy had gone bonkers

by Gus Mitchem on Jul 15, 2010 2:42 PM CDT up reply actions

crazy but it worked

OU rolled in with their throwback uniforms and had been playing well. Nick, Batch and a strong D sent them back to Norman with their asses handed to them. They came out the next week and destroyed OSU. I’m sure Nick confused the hell out of Gerald too.

QB

Both these guys will get to start this season. I think it’s more of who starts first. Injuries will be a factor for Sheffield as we are already hearing he’s not 100% yet. I want my QB at 100%. No more limping out of the huddle. I will support who ever this staff appoints the starter.

I'll support

whoever the staff picks as the starter as long as it is Sticks. Otherwise I may see if I can pay a player to fake an injury and see if we can’t get another regime change out of it.

I have a lean for this guy to become a Red Raider...somehow.

Conner Floyd, Lake Travis WR: A player flying under the radar entering his senior season with fellow Lake Travis stars like Brewer and the departed Andy Erickson, Floyd is now ready to become the top receiving threat for the Cavaliers. It didn’t take long for him to make his impact on the championship game, scoring a touchdown on the first play and finishing with four touchdowns against DeSoto, capping off an impressive tournament.
At a solid 6-1 and close to 200 pounds, Floyd doesn’t have a big-time frame, but he has good speed, runs his routes crisply and attacks the ball consistently whether inside or outside his fame. In other words, he’s fundamentally sound like most of his Lake Travis teammates.

I kind of expected Brewer to do well in the 7 on 7, that we would hear a lot of stuff about his game and ability…I am happily reading about Jace Amaro at TE being such a fine athlete that I am getting some of that giddy myself. 6-6 235-240ish with speed, athleticism and ability—I cannot wait to see his impact in the Big12—can’t wait. I heard one of those radio inteviews yesterday from one ot the scouts who writes for either Rivals or Scout—I didn’t catch who—but the guy was saying, in almost giddy tones himself, that he was about ready to raise his evaluation of Amaro based on what he saw at the 7 on 7. Boys, we got us a good one here !!

I am conflicted about the qb choice…I see what Sheffield has accomplished and I see what Potts has, I see two winning qb’s period. Personally I do not have a dog in this hunt. I am about resigned to expect Potts to start…I cannot say anything other than that, no detailed comparison, no stat review, just something about his potential and measureables, more that kind of stuff…he is getting a lot of affirmation from outside the TTU community, there has to be something to that…it may be mere circumstance but I am currently sensitized by the timing of the Manning camp and the announcement but a few days later of the Davey O’brian watch list…I am wondering if the Mannings made input on that call.

I love T Peak’s story, and I think it has but started….I am expecting something similar from his brother Nubian, who is a fast rb…could go inside as a receiver.

I disagree about Sheffield...

I don’t see how a guy with a 177 qb makes bad decisions. And he only threw 4 interceptions all year. Interceptions were not a problem .. Many plays were extended by his quick feet when Potts would have been sacked. And as far as injuries… Potts has had more injuries than Sheffield the last year and a half. He even “had” to leave the Alamo Bowl and Sheffield rescued us. Sheffields injuries are actually the same injury. He was brought back probably too early from his injury against probably the best defensive team in America…Nebraska. The first one didn’t heal properly. Look at the losses and who started: UT- Potts UH- Potts, A&M Potts, OSU Potts.

by NorthAustin on Jul 15, 2010 4:21 PM CDT reply actions

I'm not saying he's bad

and sure, he did play better, but he has faults. Of his 4 picks, he threw 3 of them inside the 20:

http://www.cfbstats.com/2009/player/700/1003710/passing/situational.html

I’m just trying to say that he isn’t perfect, and that perhaps Sheffield’s biggest fault is that he’s a skinny SOB that may get injured more easily than Potts. What I’m trying to say, and maybe I didn’t do it very well, is that I think both are going to play this season because they each have issues, both on the field and physically.

And Leach always

said that QB rating was a bunch of BS. I’ve asked the guys at Football Outsiders to give me some more definative stats on Potts and Sheffield (they’re busy, but I’m on their list) to compare how well they did play-by-play, on passing downs and by each series.

Thanks Seth....I see what youre saying

I think int’s to td rating is an awesome stat. So is int’s. So is completion percentage. All of those go into qb rating. Sidenote…..when sticks threw an int he could make a tackle…

by NorthAustin on Jul 15, 2010 5:37 PM CDT reply actions

I feel confident that both can get the job done.

Potts can sling the hell out of the ball, but needs help with touch on both long and short passes (good thing most or Tech’s passes fall in neither category, and from reading about his Manning Academy performance, he has picked up some touch).

Sticks has better pocket presence and more touch, but is injury prone and has maybe too much touch when throwing the ball towards the sideline (see his pick sixes).

Either way, I would feel comfortable with either at the helm. Also, having a QB battle like this is never a bad thing. If either of them allow for complacency to set in, then they’ll be out of a starting job. Due to that, I think Tech has the best QB situation in the Big 12. I just hope neither of them crack under pressure.

by TheScarletandTheBlack on Jul 15, 2010 5:55 PM CDT reply actions

Potts vs Sticks

One key difference this season will be the change in audibles. Less things to think about so both can let their natural abilities flow. To me that will help Potts more than Sticks.

He's running the same offense he ran the last couple years in Troy

So he isn’t "Taylor"ing the offense to Potts.
