Centex' s review of the Sporting magazines run down of the Red Raiders chances
Succumbed and bought all the Preseason major southwest football magazines. Lindys , Athlons, Sporting News and Dave Campbell’s. Here’s the break down.
Lyndys: Opposing Coaches view - On the departure of Mike Leach: "I really don’t know all that went on behind the scenes…but I believe the administration and fans will forever regret letting Mike Leach get away… he was definitely different.. But he consistently made them dangerous with that offense. I seriously doubt Tommy Tuberville will be as effective. He’s a more traditional guy and I don’t think you can be Plain Jane at Tech and be as successful as Leach."
On Tech Offense : "I expect it to take a major step back. B.Batch is a really underrated running back but Taylor Potts and Stephen Sheffield are just pretty average quarterbacks. I bet they won’t recruit another Michael Crabtree with Tuberville offensive track record ."
Centex’s take this is either Mack Brown or Brent Venables talking.
Magazine offers pretty decent stats, player profiles and notebook.
Lyndys doesn’t offer a prognostication about the upcoming season.
Sporting News does a one page team recap its notable for only one thing it projects your Red Raiders to go to the "Dallas Football Classic" bowl formerly the Cotton Bowl??. Right and no way do they predict the overall record. So 6 and 6 folks? sporting news football 2010 by the Clone chronicles
Athlon: Opposing Coach size up of Texas Tech:
http://www.athlonsports.com/college-football
"You don’t know about them and whether they are going to stay with that offense. You’d think they’d keep some of it with the skill kids they have, but Tuberville’s always been a run guy…Tommy has always relied on his running game and defense to win games and that worked for him in the SEC. I’d be really surprised if Texas Tech comes out throwing the ball all over the place. Tommy has the old school approach in his blood…I know one thing Texas Tech is going to finally play defense. As good as Mike’s offenses were there the defense was never going to win games for them..This is going to be one of the most intriguing teams not only in our league but in the entire country."
Centex’s take this was either Art Briles or Will Muschamp talking. Possibly Mike Sherman.
Decent job breaking down the recruiting, 2009 rankings, and a full page devoted to the roster by position. That’s nice.
They offer up a verdict for 2010: Raiders go 8-4. Postseason : Holdiay Bowl "if everything comes together Texas Tech could finish third in the Big 12." Interesting not just third or fourth in the Big 12 south. It’s a switch folks.
Dave Campbell’s 2010 Texas Football
Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine promo
Nice game of the year sniglet. They grade out the Raiders players positions like this:
Vs nation OL = B - Vs Big 12 OL = B- // Vs nation RB = B+ Vs Big 12 RB = B // Vs nation WR = A- Vs Big 12 WR = B+ // Vs nation QB = B+ Vs Big 12 QB = B
Vs nation DL = B- Vs Big 12 DL = C // Vs nation LB = B Vs Big 12 LB = C+ // Vs nation DB = B- Vs Big 12 DB = B- // Vs nation Spec Tm = B Vs Big 12 Spec Tm = B
For the life of me I can’t figure out why they let Don Williams from the Avalanche Journal write these reviews. Every year he writes it like he doesn’t know these coaches, (he knows at least 2 x Cumby and Moore) players or the operating environment. In fact he writes like he’s trying to pass a term paper. With minimum effort. In his defense I know he probably only delivers a manuscript and the DCTF guys and gals edit it. They are wedded to UT and ensure the whole magazine licks their orange backsides with great regularity.
DCTF last year predicted the Raiders would go 7-5 we all know how accurate that was. For 2010 they are equally pessimistic. We are going 8-4 and losing in order of the schedule to Texas, Texas A&M, Missouri and finally Oklahoma. The only saving grace in this tepid dishwater write up was that they admitted that Texas was losing 6 x starters and Garret Gilbert might not be all that and a bag of chips by 18 Sep in the Raider crater. As with most conventional wisdom write ups they rank Tech as finishing fourth in the Big 12 South behind UT, OU and aTm. The Writers poll are as close to unanimous as possible – with the lonely two exceptions of the Houston Chronicle dude Steve Campbell and Jimmy Burch of the FW Star Telegram. All the other Texas sports writers pick a UT versus NEB rematch in the Big 12 title game. And the Avalanche Journal wasn’t even in on the poll.
Phil Steele and other polls on where everyone will finish
Finally they don’t give you "An" opposing Coaches run down.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Double-T Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Double-T Nation's writers or editors.

Sounds weird but....
When it comes to college football offseason reviews, bloggers/sbnation types are going to be the most informed on the teams. I mean writers from large newspapers and tv conglomerates get what is fed to them, though they really don’t know much past that at this point. I mean nobody from the Dallas Morning News or the Houston Chronicle were at the Red/Black game or at practices… how would they know what the offense is shaping up to be? Or how TT is coaching these kids up?
The truth about grading Texas Tech football at this point is that you simply can’t. Tech will continue to fly under the radar and everyone in the media will use the coaching change is an excuse to say Tech won’t amount to much, and when we do end up surprising people it will be to the surprise of the nation and a great cover story… meanwhile back on the Double T Nation front we will see what we already know… that we match up well in almost all positions, and that our skill players are greatly under-rated.
Normally I find the pre-season hype fun, but these days too many people take the easy aspect of ‘oh they lost their coach they are going to suck now’, there hasn’t been one columnist I have seen in the mass media that has even put forth the slightest bit of effort towards TTU this year.
But that is how we like it right?
I mean we did make a name for ourselves as the underdog right?
Might as well live it up, cause there are going to be allot of people with egg on their face when this season starts to take shape. (especially those behind the Baylor/A&M hype machines)
Right Vassago not much research going into the write ups. Guess that’s why I am so disappointed with D. Willliams. I dont get the passion. No fire. His article nnnhh. Well its alot like he copied our threads of logic here on DTN . I get he’s the only show in town on the south plains. Heck get a guest write up by Hyatt and crew. (sigh)

Nah I hear ya, I mean in Houston its even worse, all I get to read about is how Robert Griffin III is the second coming of Christ, and how A&M is just one step away from a national championship… literally, this is all I get to read about, the two basement dwellers getting boosted to unreal levels. I’ve also had to tune out how UH is so much better than Tech ever was, and how they need a brand new stadium… though they only seem to fill the one they have when TTU comes to town. Sports writers in H-town are the worst.

We gave the Houston media the ammo to use against Tech by losing to Houston & A&M in the same year
The worst part of sitting in Houston traffic jams is having to look at Association of Former Students stickers on every third car. A&M is the state school of choice for the Houston suburban kids much like Tech is for the DFW suburban kids.
"I can't believe I finally decide to let a girl into my life and she tries to eat me" - Zombieland
The thing I hate the worst is...
Even when we do beat A&M and others there isn’t even hardly a mention of it. I mean like one article and that’s it. You look around town and there are stores completely dedicated to A&M/UT, you hardly even see the red and black represented anywhere. There def needs to be some marketing types working some angles down here, there are way too many people in Houston not to have some sort of representation. I mean when Tech beat UT a few years back all I read about was how Colt deserved it more and blah blah blah.
On a side note, I just get to my breaking point down here now that one good season in the books and every damned person is all the sudden a die hard UofH fan, out of nowhere everyone wants to tell you about the one semester they took there before they dropped out. I watched the TTU v UH game in a bar and people were actually giving me S- for not cheering on UofH even after I e xplained… ‘He jerk—- I graduated from TTU get bent’
GOD I can’t wait for some revenge this year… ok, my ranting and raving is over time to put away the soap box.

The major newspapers prediction seriously wasn't that far off.
Tech finished 8-4 before beating Michigan State to go 9-4.
One game differential, and that is it.
Nobody can give a perfect prediction. Blogs can’t do it. LAJ can’t do it. Dallas Morning News can’t do it. ESPN is the worst of them all. sbnation can’t do it either. This blog (DTN) even has weaknesses of their own because I’m sure the majority predict they will beat UT each and every year. And we know that has never been 100% correct. Not even 50% correct either.
I believe DTN does the best job knowing Texas Tech sports better than anyone else, but I think one would be a fool to say they know how to evaluate and analyze every team in the Big 12.
For instance, would DTN predict the endings of Big 12 game matchups for all teams in the Big 12 more correctly than the major newspaper outlets.
I would say it’s a flip of a coin 50/50 chance it would be either Yes or No.
DTN also doesn’t sit on the practice field of everyone else in the Big 12 either, so that argument can be used for any media outlet.
I am not buying it Skyblade.
The beef I have is that the dude or dudes who write about the “local” teams they cover need some fire. We didnt get much heat from Williams . I dont blame the national media wanks for “being an inch deep and a mile wide”. the D Ubben’s etc. But its Dave Campbell’s. It deserves a step up. The whole nation of media types are going to pull their quotes from this product..mostly.

Totally Disagree
If my JOB was to pay attention to football, I would know WAY more than these bafoons. I would love Ubben’s job and I would be able to put together a prediction that was much better than what these guys predict. By that I mean, I would at least get the facts straight and have some backup. Sure the wins and losses are a toss up at times, but I’d like people to actually know who we have a various positions. The fact that people are still talking about Crabtree tells you that these guys have no idea what is going on.
Uben...
Is the worst blogger I have EVER seen on ESPN, Griffin was biased towards UT, but at least he but some time and effort into his blog posting all day long… Uben posts MAX 5 posts a day, and stops print at 5:00 pm every day… and forget about weekend reports, you will NEVER see them from him, absolutely worthless blogger with the biggest dream job you could have.

The biggest problem...
I have with the sports writers are that they never really do much research beyond what the mainstream media is saying. I understand that the blogs are going to be bias towards the teams they support but at least you get current information about the ongoings of teams you follow. These magazines all say the same thing and have been doing so since TT arrived in Lubbock. The only thing that will change that will be what happens in the fall. For now, the magazines and newspapers are just wasteland of repeated nonsense.

A 3rd place finish in 2010 won't lead to the Holiday Bowl
They offer up a verdict for 2010: Raiders go 8-4. Postseason : Holdiay Bowl “if everything comes together Texas Tech could finish third in the Big 12.”
Beginning in 2010, the Alamo Bowl gets the 3rd place team from the Big 12 and the 2nd place team from the Pac 10. Holiday Bowl drops way down in class. You would think a sporting magazine (Athlon) would get that right…
Those Alamo Bowl officials are probably in the small camp that is glad the Big 12-Pac 10 merger fell apart.

There is an interesting dicotmy in College Football. There is this mass media / gen pop level of “news” that runs parallel with the general fandom that exists and then there is the rest of us the rabid fans! Amongst the rabid fan base there are two types of fans, one being the I love my school and dont care about any others and second the fan that loves their school and knows eveything about their school but also loves the sport and their schools place within the greater sport.
The scarry thing is that as time goes on the $$$$$ projected by making the gen pop fan base grow (ala NFL) puts pressure on the real fans!
Whether these guys are right or wrong, or devote enough time or not…I am just glad these publications are out so we can get our fix. Fall practice starts in about two weeks. Doesn’t it seem like the end of last year was forever ago? With so many other distractions this off-season, it’s nice to see us talking about football in a general sense versus the junk that was associated with football in the spring.
Do the national writers ever get it right? Not usually. But I guess I know that going in and don’t sweat their lack of detail too much. Really, to do justice to 120 teams is fairly difficult, so they give a best guess based on the major factors…new coach, new defense, strange/erratic performances last year. Hard to blame them too much, but this is a new year. And once again, we get to prove people wrong. History clearly shows that Tech, for whatever reason, plays better as an overlooked team than they do as a front-runner. Fine by me…
I will say that it's tough
trying to figure out all of the ends-and-outs for just the teams on TTU’s schedule. Despite the fact that most seem to think that I do a decent job of previewing teams on DTN, I get lambasted on message boards where I’m called an idiot for not knowing the 4-deep for Team X and that the up-and-coming Player Y will easily replace departing Player Z. I was talking to my brother-in-law about this and he said why do I do it, and for me, it’s about trying to be knowledgeable about an opponent.
Obviously, I can’t know everything about every other team, but opposing fans expect that. Over the weekend, I had a Colorado reader email me and correct my Buff’s preview. He was definitely the exception to the rule, but he understood that sometimes we get things wrong.
I fully admit, that for the most part, it’s these guys’ jobs to know these teams while it’s just a hobby for me personally.
Maybe it’s because I have a passion for my team that’s the difference?

Well I think...
you do a damn fine job, and could probably beat out most Big 12 sports writers in terms of knowledge of all the teams in the league. It’s easy to report on all the big names (which is the only thing those lackeys do a sufficient job of), but reporting about some team other than the three teams in the league that Beebe’s circle jerking (reprimand me for that one Danny boy) is not always easy.

I think I do okay, but I think what I'm saying is that
no matter how good a job I think I do, opposing fans will think that I’m being biased, insulting their program and how could I not know that they’ve recruited 3 4-star lineman over the past two years. As much as you guys and gals appreciate the work I do, opposing fans think I’m a hack, I’m just a dumb blogger, etc. It’s just the way it is.
