Edited by Seth C to include text of press release:

The Big 12 Conference has announced a public reprimand of Texas Tech University head football coach Tommy Tuberville for recent statements that were a violation of the Big 12 Conference’s Principles and Standards of Sportsmanship, prohibiting public criticism of members.

"Tommy Tuberville’s comments were unfortunate, and contrary to the very strong feelings of unity expressed publicly and privately by the Big 12 Board of Directors and athletic directors," said Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe. "Coach Tuberville has admitted that his comments do not reflect his true feelings of respect for the Conference, its leadership, and his excitement about its future and has apologized to the Conference and its members. In deciding to reprimand Coach Tuberville, I took into account that this is a first-time offense and that he has committed to adhere to the rules and contribute to strengthen the Conference. If not for these factors, a more significant penalty would be assessed, and will be if there are any future violations."

"I look forward to putting this matter behind us and working with Texas Tech and Coach Tuberville as we continue to build on the tremendous success of this Conference," said Commissioner Beebe.

This will serve as the final decision and comment on this matter by all parties.

Edited by Seth C to laugh: Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!

This is crap. I hope like hell this starts the revolution. This is the equivalent of kicking the cat because that’s all he can do. Seth you got your wish

Seth two days ago you stated the followingTuberville’s railing on Beebe, the Big 12-2, the unequal distribution of revenue and the fact that Texas controls the entire situation isn’t anything new, at least from a Texas Tech perspective. And what’s the worst thing that could happen to Tuberville? Is Beebe going to tell Tubs and Hance that they need to be quiet and fall in line? I’d love to see Beebe do that. I’d love to see Beebe address Hance’s and Tuberville’s concerns about the health of the conference and the unequal revenue distribution. I’d imagine that you’d be waiting a pretty long time for Beebe to do anything without the express written consent and permission from the University of Texas.

Now I wait for the fuse to be lit. I believe we will see a very short coaching career for TT at Tech. Speech making will omly take you so far.

by double-t on Jul 2, 2010 10:02 PM CDT reply actions

I did and to be honest, I'm shocked that Beebe

did anything, but why do you see a short coaching career for Tubs at TT? He has coached before.

by Seth C on Jul 3, 2010 3:48 AM CDT up reply actions

Seth The reason I believe TT is a short timer.

TT used his position as head coach to comment on a deal that Tech has no power position to deal from like Texas, OU and ATM do.
I like all Tech fans can complain about how unfair this is to Tech. However TT who represents TTU must bring power to back up negative public comments. Beebe called his the bluff and won.
Beebe made him TT apologize for not being a team player.
The fuse is lit the firecracker fizzled. Tech looks like a cry baby to the power players at the table.

by double-t on Jul 3, 2010 7:03 AM CDT up reply actions

Okay, sure we've all known that Texas Tech

isn’t dealing from a position of power, but what does that have to do with Tuberville leaving. Does this mean that Hance is leaving too since he said the same thing 2 weeks ago? Beebe said that he apologized, but I haven’t seen any direct quotes from Tubs.

I guess I don’t understand what was the bluff? If anything, that was my bluff, I didn’t think that Beebe had the fortitude to do something about it, but he did. He gave Tubs a verbal warning. Big deal.

How does TT look like a cry-baby? If anything, it makes Beebe look like an ass as he made the deal with Texas, scheduled a press conference and then notified TT about what was going to happen. That doesn’t sound like a commissioner that’s working with 10 schools.

Also, I don’t understand this sentence:

However TT who represents TTU must bring power to back up negative public comments.

Not trying to pick on you, I just don’t understand where you’re going with this.

At the end of the day, Texas Tech, Hance and Tuberville made it very public about the inequity of the deal, and perhaps (I’m not counting on this, but it’s a possibility) that TT and the other schools that were left out might get a better deal of making a little noise.

And one more thing.

Nebraska AD Tom Osborne was critical of the Big 12:

"The Big Ten has a very different approach than the Big 12. The Big 12 let each school keep a certain amount of money deending on the number of appearances they had on television. The Big 12 let each school have their own television network. The Big Ten is more or less one for all and all for one. So, most everything goes into a common pot and no one has their own network. And whether that’s good or bad I don’t know….I think that’s one reason they have had a good deal of stability."

I’m waiting for Beebe to issue a verbal warning to him (I’m pretty sure that this won’t happen, so if I were being literal, I’d be waiting a long time).

Seth I hope you are right

I respect your point of view but I see this vry different from you. I just see this issuein a differnt light. General McChrystal was fired for saying what was patently obvious.

You have to follow the charade of not bucking your “superiors” and bite the hand that feeds you when you make public statements. Lord help anyone who would dare cause embarassment to state the obvious when UT “the Sacred Cow” is involved in anything. I think this will develop as black eye for Tech.

by double-t on Jul 3, 2010 7:39 AM CDT up reply actions

Sure it might, and I respect your opinion too,

but I don’t understand how this will affect Texas Tech? Could Texas Tech be left out of future conference realignment? Absolutely. But if I had to guess if those reasons were because Tuberville had some harsh words about the Big 12 Commish or for a dozen different reasons (UT and TAMU are tied together as are OU and OSU and TT could be left out of the Pac-12).

Double-t, I have been following this conversation with interest

and kind of like Seth, I cannot see why Coach Tuberville’s job could be in jeapordy or that he might be looking to go to another position.

I think he is defending TTU, and his chosen goal of improving the football program. Nor can I connect the dots with General McC who went against his Commander-in-Chief, when Coach T actually echoed his commander-in-chief.

Both the Chancellor and Head Football Coach have put words in the ears of their peers saying there is a better way, why are we settling for less.

Agree

TT has clearly put TTU into “do not like this deal” column. I believe he is speaking with tacit approval from Hance. McCrystal was fired for what his staff said about the administration on his behalf and the media made it difficult for him not to be fired. Tubberville comments were only a repeat of what Hance earlier stated in a more politcally correct fashion and the media has basically commended TT as being “honest”.

The comments have clearly had their desired effect preceding Big 12 revenue sharing negotiations. TTU wants a bigger piece of the pie!

"It's time to get down to serious business." Tuberville

by jdhud on Jul 3, 2010 9:08 AM CDT up reply actions

I do not diagree with message only that it should not be in the media

When you look at the history it is obvious that power and the decision that come from it occur in private discussions.
From the Bob Bullock book:
Sometime in the 1990s, a transformation was taking place in the way college athletic programs were financed. Conferences, rather than central organizations (the NCAA, the College Football Association) began negotiating their own television contracts, leading the more powerful schools into a superconference mentality. The stronger the conference, the more lucrative the contract. After Arkansas bolted from the Southwest Conference for the Southeast, athletic directors from the Southwest Conference and the Big 8 began discussions about their own superconference. The talks centered on Texas and Texas A&M joining the Big 8, leaving TCU, Houston, Rice, Baylor, Texas Tech and SMU to fend for themselves in a much weakened Southwest Conference.
The athletic directors overlooked a few critical factors. Bob Bullock and Gov. Richards were Baylor grads. Bullock and Sen. John Montford, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, were Texas Tech grads, as was House Speaker Laney and House Appropriations Committee Chairman Rob Junell. Stiff-arming them would not be easy.
Bullock, invigorated by the triumph and praise of the previous legislative session, summoned Bill Cunningham of UT and Herb Richardson of A&M to his office early in 1994, when the conference shuffle – converting the Big 8 to the Big 10 — was on the verge of being a done deal. Glaring at the two men he said, "You’re taking Tech and Baylor or you’re not taking anything. I’ll cut your money off and you can join privately if you want, but you won’t get another nickel of state money."
The university representatives apparently believed the subject was open for discussion, that they had a negotiating position. When they expressed hesitation, Bullock cut them off. "If you want to try me, go ahead," he said.
"Governor, we understand," Cunningham said.
At that moment, for all practical purposes, the Big 8 became the Big 12.

I think that CTT showed poor judgment in making the public statements on the future of the Big 12. What did Captain get for is public railings about the officiating in the Big 12, did anything change other than the $10,000 fine. CTT statements are factual and honest it was poor judgment to state them in the media. If CTT continues with this lack of judgment then his career will be short at Tech.

by double-t on Jul 4, 2010 8:08 AM CDT up reply actions

Dan Beebe wears clown shoes.

Anything that may only be spoken to him privately probably shouldn’t be said at all. The world deserves to hear people in the know discuss what we all know. If the truth of TT’s statements is assumed, nothing else needs be said about his judgment.

Go register. Or else.

The argument to get in line & be a good nazi only helps the nazi regime

Keep the pressure up through endless public shaming of the principals (Texas & the remnant organization formerly known as the Big 12). Make it clear that the conference untenable as configured. Otherwise all 9 schools not called the University of Texas will be dumped on again as soon as UT finds it convenient.

Curious in regard to "a more significant penalty...for any future violations."

How much power does Beebe have? What can he actually do according to bylaws? I do think Tubs is off to a good start already in recruiting—Tech up to 14 in early ESPN recruiting and several 4 star recruits are considering Tech— http://insider.espn.go.com/ncf/recruiting/tracker/school?page=considering&season=2011&schoolId=2641&action=login&appRedirect=http%3a%2f%2finsider.espn.go.com%2fncf%2frecruiting%2ftracker%2fschool%3fpage%3dconsidering%26season%3d2011%26schoolId%3d2641— with Christian Jones and Charles Jackson both having Tech on the top of their respective considering lists; Jones has Tech #1, and Jackson has Tech #2. Tubs is helping to create more power in a very direct way: on the field. As for the comments he made, he was just frustrated with the Big 12 situation—like most Tech fans rightfully are—and just speaking his mind.

TT comments make me want to stand up and fight for our rights, not cry like a baby. This is the first thing he has done that has made me super excited about his attitude of winning. He isn’t going to back down to the powers that be b/c he wants his fair share. We do a great job making money and competing in the big 12 and we don’t want to be some step child. TT didn’t do anything but state facts, and he has a great position of knowledge b/c of his involvement in the SEC (equal revenue sharing) for years. If TT brings this attitude of fighting for what you want, I hope he is here a long time!

remind me of a former coach that our own administration tried to muffle, without success, until they fired him for the most ridiculous of reasons. I am not sure how the team will react to all of this, but my hope is that they will simply destroy EVERYONE on their way to a National Championship, and then accept an offer to play with some schools that actually want to have better relationships and shared revenue.

IN SOVIET RUSSIA, FEELINGS FEEL YOU!

Does this sound like a Soviet press release to anybody else?

Coach Tuberville has admitted that his comments do not reflect his true feelings of respect for the Conference, its leadership, and his excitement about its future and has apologized to the Conference and its members.

CTT talks bad about Dan Beebe and the Big XII, they drag him in, and force him to “admit” that his true honest-to-god feelings — not the ones he expresses candidly, but the sincere kind conceded at the business end of a gun — are that the conference is well led, and he is just tickled pink to be part of such an exciting group certain to remain in perpetuity.

Even when he’s defending himself Dan Beebe is incompetent. A real leader would’ve just issued a statement that said: We didn’t like what he said about the conference, we think it was inconsistent with the bylaws that he’s bound by, and we’re punishing him. Next question.

Instead insecure Dan has to get an admission from CTT that what he said wasn’t just bad, but also didn’t reflect what he REALLY meant, as if we all couldn’t figure that out. Never trust your lying eyes, I guess.

Signed with Virg Tech last Feb but now they will not admit him saying his SAT is 30 pts to low for their own std. He is above NCAA std and had a 3.1 GPA. Was just informed few days ago by VT people. He knows Coach Prunty well, called him, and after Coach Prunty picked himself up off the floor offered him on the spot. The kid has committed and is coming to Raiderland next week. Tubbervill might fit in in Lubbock after all

go get ’em TT! Can you imagine what Leach would have said? I would have loved to have heard those quotes!

Anyone know Bebe's email address?

I have a procedural question: according to the bylaws, how does the conference go about calling a vote of no confidence in a Big12’s commissioner?

by silver_ on Jul 3, 2010 3:17 PM CDT reply actions

I believe the proper procedure for demonstrating no confidence is to threaten to join the Pac 10 or SEC unless he pays you 20+M in monopoly money.

Go register. Or else.

On Rivals.com

The question was asked:
<THIS WEEK’S QUESTION: Texas Tech coach Tommy Tuberville said on Rivals Radio this past week that he didn’t think the Big 12 “will last long because there is too much disparity between all the teams.” Your thoughts? >

The answers…in short form:

<I totally agree. That Texas, Oklahoma and Texas A&M will get a greater portion of the TV revenue means an unequal playing field from a budget standpoint. Because of that, I don’t think any school will win a Big 12 football title aside from one of those three, creating more discord. …….._Tony Dienhart>

Tommy Tuberville might not throw the ball 50 times a game at Texas Tech, but at least he’s speaking his mind like former Red Raiders coach Mike Leach. I agree with Tuberville……_David Fox
I think he’s right. I also think the reason he reportedly has been dressed-down by school officials and even Big 12 officials is that they know he’s right. …._Mike Huguenin

It looks like the writers are even backing Coach TT here.

TTpilk Psalm 117:
1 ¶ O praise the LORD, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people.

Tuberville speaks his mind just like our last coach. The difference is the media know TT is a good ole boy type and the are more likely to listen.

Well, the thing about Tony Dienhart's remarks that does not help his case

is that he is saying one of those three teams is going to win championships based on their income…the history does not support that…I do agree with his general sentiments however:

What makes the SEC and Big Ten the best leagues is equal distribution of resources. It’s all about “united we stand, divide we fall.” The Big 12 is a fractured and dysfunctional family that isn’t united and is doomed to fall – as it almost did last month.

Question about this comment, is the following accurate, I am not aware:

he reportedly has been dressed-down by school officials and…

Bottom Line

CTT comments are a “trial balloon”. Hance is watching Tubervilles “six”. He knows without Tuberville, Tech is without a coach who can go transition to the next level without fan riots after the fiasco with Leach. Tech’s football program has surpassed ATM under Leach and has its sites set on UT and OU. OSU is not far behind TTU. Tuberville was right on in expressing his discontent especially when ATM is in the “Haves” column while TTU is in the “Have nots”. The Big 12-2 is a farce as presently configured.

I am so happy that you host the Longhorns this coming season.

I can’t wait to see what kinds of signs and displays your fans come up with for that one.

Perhaps for that game, you ought to replace your sideline mascot with a Dodds look-alike that has a Beebe sock puppet on his hand. (Do you have a sideline mascot? I can’t remember. Either way, though.)

Excellent Thought!

Now…. will ESPN let the camera air those sign’s?

No comment from Tech admin or TT

On Friday, Tech athletic spokesman Blayne Beal said the Big 12 asked the school not to comment on the issue.

The Big 12 concluded its statement by saying, "This will serve as the final decision and comment on this matter by all parties."

There has been no comment by Tech or TT since the Big 12 told Tech/TT to be quiet. Is this just because it is a 3 day weekend (i.e. everybody is out of the office) or are Tech and TT actually obeying the Big 12 command to shut up? It just seems incredible that TT/Tech would obey an order to shut up (especially considering that the Big 12 is not in a strong position)

Was TT free-lancing when he criticized the Big 12 or just executing a plan devised by (for example) Hance?

No matter who is the coach. .

TTU always seems to find a way to be rebelious. He has big shoes to fill so keep going Tubs.

The truth shall set you free, I guess not with Beebe

by DanSwany on Jul 4, 2010 3:17 AM CDT via mobile reply actions

This is what happens...

When a commissioner believes in dictatorship as opposed to democracy. Beebe has too much power, and should have been immediately fired after allowing Colorado and Nebraska to exit. I find it obnoxious and annoying that Beebe still says “Big 12” when it obviously is no longer a 12 team conference due to his poor leadership.

How can one be a dictator w/o any real power ?
