Double-T Nation Daily Diatribe | Texas Tech Breaks Season Ticket Records

If I'm Away: I think most of you know that I'm usually away from the computer for almost the entire day once I leave for work, which is usually about 7:00 a.m. I always appreciate readers sending me emails during the day with story links, but more times than not, I'm not going to be able to post any of those links until early in the morning. Additionally, since Texas Tech will be headed to the Big 12 Media Days, if anyone wants to post links of quotes or discussion points, feel free to maybe post your own FanPost link-dump or a FanShot. You'd be helping me out, although I will say that if your post ever mysteriously disappears, it's usually because it's a double-post and the link you've posted is already on DTN. Pretty soon, you guys and gals will be replacing me in posting links. Help me help you.
Dykes, Leach and Lemons: LAJ's Tommy Magelssen had a short article about a guy who is writing a book of quotes from Spike Dykes, Mike Leach and Abe Lemons. So there you go.

Breaking Records: The official site says that Texas Tech is earnin' and burnin' by setting records of season tickets at 30,709, which does not include the students.
Big 12 Preseason Stuff: Hat-tip to TheScarletandTheBlack, the official Big 12 site had the media preseason football poll and I don't think there were many surprises, at least not to me. I think most publications are thinking the Aggies make a bit of a surge this year. I'm not sure about that, but time will tell.
Good Works: ESPN's David Ubben has the list of eleven Big 12 players nominated for AFCA Good Works Team, and includes Seth C favorite, RB Baron Batch. Here's the entire list. Congrats to Baron!
Ranking = Discussion Points: I don't think it's a secret, but a big reason why writers rank players or positions is that people love lists and people love to think that they're team is being dissed. I don't get worked up too much about these lists as I understand their intent. In any event, NE State Paper Samuel McKewon ranks the defensive lines and Texas Tech is at #7:
7. Texas Tech
Returning Starters: One
Strengths: As the Red Raiders move to a 3-4, nose tackle Colby Whitlock will be a key after he finished with 45 tackles on a very good defensive line last year. Tennessee transfer Donald Langley should fit in nicely to Tommy Tuberville’s scheme.
Weaknesses: Whitlock is the only down lineman with much experience. End Brian Duncan will move to linebacker, and we’ll consider him there.
Also, FSSW's Eddie Middleton ranks the Big 12 Running Backs and puts Baron Batch at #7:
7) Baron Batch, Senior, Texas Tech: When you think of Tech, you don't think of running the football, but Batch does bring a solid running game to Lubbock as he has 22 rushing touchdowns for his career. His biggest contribution came in the bowl game win over the Spartans has he rushed for 100 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries. He also caught six passes for 85 yards in that game as well. For a team going through a transition, look for this senior to be the glue that keeps the team together.
Matter's Ballot: CT's Dave Matter released his All-Big 12 Offense ballot and no Red Raiders made the list, but many were under consideration. I appreciate Matter's transparency and rational. I may not agree, but I appreciate those two things.
BCS and Big 12 Love Each Other: ESPN's David Ubben has some quotes from the head of the BCS Bill Hancock who is very happy that conference realignment didn't happen:
"I was concerned about it because of the unintended consequences. I don’t think any of us knew what might happen. One thing you know about right now, you know what the consequences are. But galactic changes open you up to so many things that you don’t even know about," Hancock said. "And it made me nervous. And I tried to think about, is this making me nervous because I’m a traditionalist, or because I really don’t know what might happen?
Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe also had this to say:
"I think it's a huge disservice to the student-athletes if it grows to a bigger number, where they have to go further and not have as much chance to win championships and have access to championships," Beebe said at June's Big 12 spring meetings.
This is all bullshit.

Battie Signs with Sixers: Former Red Raider Tony Battie is going to be cashing NBA checks for at least another year for $1.4 million. Battie said in his press conference that one of the reasons he went to Texas Tech was because he's a mama's boy.

I wonder what the revenue number on those ticket sales are.
What ultimately matters is not how many tickets we sell, but how much revenue those sales produce.
Now, I know one of us out there may rhetorically ask, “so is selling one ticket for $60,000 better than selling 60,000 tickets for $1?”
Of course the answer to that in practical terms is ‘no’ (afterall how much popcorn can one person eat?), but it illustrates the concept that more ticket sales is not necessarily better.
What would not be a good outcome is if Texas Tech’s ticket revenues fell in spite of increased ticket sales (unless the fall in ticket sales revenue is reasonably expected to be replaced by increased but more variable and far less reliable income from concessions, parking and other such revenues).
If revenues increased as a result of decreased ticket prices, then I believe that would be considered a very positive outcome.
Therefore, we can only fully applaud the sales effort once we have a better idea of the revenue that is generated by those sales.

Prices went up
Prices increased for all tickets (especially if you take into account the red raider club donations), except for the 6,000 new seats. It will be curious to see how much over our previous record we are because from what I’ve heard we have sold well over half of the new 6,000 seats. They are only 150 for a season a great price. We are about 600 tickets or so above the previous record, but around 3,000 of those tickets (ive been told by the ticket office over half of the “cheap seats” are sold) are at a lower price. So we are talking about around 2,400 tickets less sold than 2008 if you remove the “cheap seats”. That being said, I think the cheap seat in 2008 was around 200 and these are 150. My tickets in 2008 were 600 (300 each with no donation to the RRC i think) and now they are 800 (350 each with 100 donation to RRC). SO, section 8 alone makes up for most of that difference. I would imagine the average ticket price has increased taking into account all the increases. But who knows.
Also, I think students fees have gone up on tickets so that is more money from students.
6000 = $900,000
Consider the new seats something of a loss leader. You fill the new section with people who can not afford season tickets in the main section. You then sell them confessions, you improve the atmosphere of the game for everyone. Since you will be selling lots of those tickets to young new families you are betting that they will upgrade to higher priced tickets as their income increases. I am betting that they are not moving many former season ticket holder to this new section but generating new ones.
Even if some of the former season ticket holders move to this section that is better than losing them all together.
The lower Gross Profit % generated by these seats will be off set by the increase in pricing of other seating.
If you add the seats at a lower price and maintain the GP% but are selling more units then the GP$ dollars will increase.
The concession GP% has to be huge, so incremental increases will be significant $.
I am curious how they figure the return on investment on a project like this.
Since no bonds were sold to finance the expansion do they even have a ROI figure to hit.
I would also be interested in the cost of operation for the Jones for one game.

You can sell them confessions?
I used to get my confessions free at St Monica. Although my parents did tithe, so the confession wasn’t exactly free.

I am not sure but .....
that might have been a Freudian slip, but then again I am Baptist. The money you could make selling Absolution it the student section could be substantial.

Exactly
Also, out of curiosity I went on the Tech website to try and purchase a season ticket in those new seating sections. On the press box side, the only think left was row 44 on the most north section. So almost all three sections were full. On the east side one section was full and you had to go way up in the second section to get a seat. I figure by the time football season comes around those new sections will be almost sold out b/c of the cheap price point. Seeing the stadium full is louder, more awesome, impresive to recruits, etc. I think they did a great job with the price points on these tickets and can’t wait to see how many show up for SMU. Also, you are correct about concessions and future growth. If you increased $5 a year on these seats and they were full that would be an additional 30K a year guaranteed on just the seats. Plus you add concessions and parking and you are way up there. Way better than charging 250 for these seats and selling less than half.
Ticket prices
From what I have heard the price of season tickets went up, plus Tech is selling more.
To me that is good! Shows that the program is coming into its own. I wish I lived closer to Lubbock. I would buy some season tickets for me and my wife!
I also think the added expectation of Tubs team and the talk of championships is really boiling the blood of the red raider faithful to come out and be rowdy!

And I would be surprised if that were the case.

Of note (though I’m not sure if this will continue, at least not next week as I’m starting a new job), I am usually around during the day so a Fanpost of substance or Fanshot of consequence has a fair shot of being promoted to the front page. So there you have it.

I think it would be bad for me personally if this 12 team conference dissolved to make a 16 team super-conference.
where they have to go further and not have as much chance to win championships and have access to championships"
I am adamantly opposed to any changes that would put the University of Texas in a more difficult position for them to win championships, all of college football, nay, all of SPORT is hurt by the University of Texas having a tougher road to the championship.
Is there ANY way to read that comment from Beebe and think he’s looking out for the best interests of at least 8 of the remaining members in this conference? (The UT support is obvious, and I’d be willing to give the benefit of the doubt on Oklahoma)
No way
