Where I Come From: My All-Time Favorite Texas Tech Team
This is the second of a week-long series of posts sponsored by EA Sports NCAA Football 2011.
It would almost be impossible for me to not pick 2008. There have been successful season in the past, and despite the fact that the 2008 team fell short of the mark, I cannot help but think of that 2008 team as my all-time favorite.
Perhaps some of the reason why that 2008 team was so important to me and to DTN was that there are three events which have transformed Double-T Nation into what it is today: the 2008 39-33 win over Texas; the termination of Mike Leach; and possible conference realignment.

What happened in November of 2008?
The absolute explosion of people visiting DTN helped make DTN what it is today. As you can see from the visitors and page views, it was the journey, starting in July that culminated in an absolute explosion of visitors that fateful November in 2008. But we're getting a head of ourselves.
Former head coach Mike Leach finally had a quarterback that had started more than one season in Graham Harrell, who would be entering his senior year at quarterback. Sophomore receiving sensation Michael Crabtree would be looking to dominate defenses in the Big 12 and senior offensive linemen Louis Vasquez, Rylan Reed and Stephen Hamby. The defense would have their first full year under defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeill and eventual NFL draftees Darcel McBath, Brandon Williams and Jamar Wall.
The season didn't necessarily start off with a bang as there were questions immediately after a mediocre win against Eastern Washington and a 2-interception and 297 yard performance by Graham Harrell against Nevada that seemed much closer than the 35-19 score indicates.
But then something happened. Things clicked. The SMU Mustangs traveled to Lubbock and the routes began. Harrell threw for 5 touchdowns, 3 of those going to Crabtree, while the defense limited SMU to less than 300 yards in total offense and didn't give up a touchdown to SMU until the 4th quarter. UMass didn't put up much of a contest as the ground game churned out 179 yards rushing for the day, led by senior RB Shannon Woods with 108 yards on only 10 carries. Conference play was right around the corner and despite a shaky first two games, the Red Raiders seemed to have a bit of momentum.
The Red Raiders would have to play three of the next four games away from Lubbock, including games at Kansas St., Texas A&M and Kansas. Against Kansas St., the Red Raiders would score on 9 of their first 10 possessions and scoring a touchdown 8 of those possessions. Harrell made the whole thing look easy. Too easy. Next up was a resurgent Nebraska team that ended up holding onto the ball for over 40 minutes of this 60 minute contest. Nebraska was down by 14 points going into the 4th quarter and the Cornhuskers rattled off 21 points to tie the game 31-31 at the end of regulation. Were it not for a ridiculous 47-yard catch by Crabtree in the 4th quarter on a 4th down call that eventually led to a Baron Batch touchdown that put Texas Tech up by 7 with a little under 4 minutes left to go and an absolutely tremendous pass rush from McKinner Dixon on Nebraska QB Joe Ganz leading up to an interception by Jamar Wall that sealed the victory.
Two road games against TAMU, which was closer than one would have liked, although Texas Tech scored 23 second half points to TAMU's 2 and then taking on the Jayhawks, which proved to be similar to the Kansas St. game in that Texas Tech scored a touchdown on 9 of their first 11 possessions.
All of this culminated in a national television game on November 1, 2008. At the time, Texas was the #1 team in the country and it was two undefeated teams that were both looking to take the first step in conference supremecy on that fateful day in November. This is one of those games where I'd love to put into words the emotions for the entire game. I suppose it didn't matter too much if you were at the game or if you were sitting on your brother-in-law's couch hanging on every freaking play. This singular game meant more to Texas Tech than any game in its history and that singular moment in time was unforgettable for Texas Tech fans.
And sometime after this game, the magic stopped. The magic didn't stop the next week when the Red Raiders routed Oklahoma St. in Lubbock, but when Texas Tech traveled to Norman, a game I actually attended, the magic stopped. Texas Tech couldn't make the fairy-tale continue, but that's not what being a fan is about. Sure, the ultimate goal for every university that competes on the BCS level is to win a championship. Ultimately 118 teams or so go home disappointed, but that never means that you shouldn't enjoy the moment. Ferris Bueller says it as well as anyone:
Life moves pretty fast. You don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.
With a devastating loss to OU, Harrell breaking his hand and Crabtree injuring his ankle against Baylor, and Ole Miss turning the Cotton Bowl into a forgettable game, the dream-season ended all to abruptly.
But that shouldn't ever mean that you shouldn't always enjoy the moment. They don't happen often and to say that you were around for that game and you lived in the emotion of that moment will be something that you'll be able to relay to your children and grandchildren.
You've heard me expound on my all-time favorite Texas Tech team, what about you? What's your all-time favorite Texas Tech team?

2008 - No doubt about it!
That was my favorite team and it’s really not even close. The OU game was a kick in the lower region and the Cotton Bowl wasn’t how I wanted the season to end.
But when I look back, I have nothing but great memories from that season. The UT game tops them all, but I particularly enjoyed beating the crap out of OSU as well.
My second favorite was the 1986 team. They finished the season 7-4, but with a middle season 4 game win streak (including UT, TCU, Arkansas and Rice) they positioned themselves for a bowl game. Doesn’t seem like a big deal now, but this was before there were a lot of bowl games and it was a BIG, BIG deal. Tech hadn’t gotten a bowl bid in 9 years up to the Independance Bowl game.
My brother played on this team and I knew most of the players so it’s a personal favorite.

Welker - Kingsbury
I loved 08 and it was definitly the peak of productivity but overall those Welker teams were just magical. The overachievment was off the charts and since we were not expected to win, it was so much less stressful than it is today. I was at the game in Austin when we had them until Mack wised up and let Chance Mock enter the game to throw a bomb to Roy Williams, we had them down to the wire. Back then people didnt know to be scared of us, and because of all the work and determination of those teams is why other schools are scared of us now.
2008 was magical and I will never forget it,
but I have to agree, there was something about watching Welker fly around the field and Kingsbury shredding the defense with his passes that just made the 08 team great. Still watch the replay of the TU game on ESPN classic and I die everytime Wall gets beat on the bomb to Williams.
Funny.......
My favorite memories are of welker and kingsbury as well. I think it’s when I realized we had something special.

Henderson-Welker-Symons
I was at the’03 austin game sitting with a bunch of ex- Texas linemen. They thought the world was ending right in front of them when Henderson scored late on the 10 yard draw play. What a great game. That BJ was awesome. It reminded me of the ’97 game against TX in Lubbock. In that one, Donnie Hart went for 240 yards receiving.

2008
Best Tech team by far. Harrell and Crabtree were the absolute best duo to ever hit the Jones. I would say they were Tech’s version of Montana & Rice. These two players worked so hard even in the off season to perfect their game and that Texas game was the prize. Of course the Mike Leach offense played a huge part in their success. I might also add James Gray and Anthony Lynn as a close second. That was my time at Tech so I had to through that in.

2008
No doubt, the best adrenalin flow ever. The close second would be the Rodney Allison-led ’76 team that lost a close hearbreaker to Houston (who won the SWC that year off that win—as usual) then lost a close, hard fought Bluebonnet Bown game to Nebraska. Both teams were my favorites.

Nothing like your years on campus
From the pure publicity that the 2008 team garnered, my pride in Tech was magnified and maybe even justified to those outside of our community. However for me the teams from 73-78 were my favorite. There is just nothing like the total experience of being on campus where Tech is your life. Everything is so new and as a person you are growing into the person you were created to be. Jim Carlen used to take the team to a special event every Friday night before the game. I went to a movie one night and my friend and I got the last 2 seats and ended up next to Andre Tillman and Larry Issacs. The movie was set in Dallas so hearing Andre comment on places he knew made us feel we knew him. After the games many of the players made appearances at the Cow Palace so that also helped to make us seem closer to the team.
The 1976 team that tied for SWC Championship was as magical to me as the 2008 team. I found myself being reminded of the β76 team all year long. I will never forget the devastation when they lost to U of H in Lubbock. Loosing to OK in β08 was tough but that one got out of hand so early that there was no real drama to think we could come back. In β76 the defense was flying around the field to stop UH and Rodney Allison scrambled his tail off trying to find open receivers or run to keep drives going. That game to me exemplified his heart and even in the loss is my best memory of the 76 season.
Was there '75-'80 and agree
1976 was a really fantastic year – even right down to the end in the game against Houston, when we almost pulled it out at the end.

2008 Season
I’m with you Seth on 2008. I still get goose bumps, smile, and watery eyed over the Texas game. Our two son’s and I began the trip with a dead battery in DFW area. It did not dampen our enthusiasm one iota. All of went to Tech and to think we would beat #1 Texas was not rational based upon history, but we had our guns up to all crossing Texas. I will never find words to describe that experience that afternoon, then at the game, then afterwards. That season and especially that Texas game permanently changed my attitude from “ho hum” to “ROUDY!”. Hats off to a daugher in law with us wearing her burnt orange the entire time. She was a great sport to us crazy guys.
Congrats Seth,

I agree
I haven’t been on this blog long but man it’s good stuff. I felt starved for tech info since i moved to Austin. That is until i found this place!

2008 Season
I graduated in 05 and I bought the 3 game packages for 2006 and 2007, but 2008 was the first year I had season tickets and it was the best money I have ever spent. I have several compilations of the 2008 Texas game on my iPhone and everytime I’m having a rough day, I play a few of those videos and I’m right back in it. Sometimes when I’m riding home from work and I listen to the Crabtree catch and the announcers, I can’t help but just scream outloud.
At the end of last year, ESPN put together the best college football plays of the decade. My wife and two young daughters were sitting with me on the couch when it came on, and when they showed the Crabtree catch and the Red Raider Network announcers screaming “Touchdown Red Raiders!!” I just lost it. My eyes teared up, my heart was pounding, and I was back in Section 3 Row 20 all over again. I actually stood up and pounded my chest a few times like I actually had an influence on the catch. Amazing. I took my wife and my dad to the Texas game. It was my dad’s first ever college football game, and it’s a moment that we will share forever.
Seth, I made DTN my homepage. That’s about the best compliment I can give a website. You do an excellent job. Thanks.

Favorite seasons
1976, 2008 and very possibly 2010.
2010
I like that ! We are all so damm passionate just think when we win a conference title and a BCS game, its a good think that Lubbock is wet now !
2003
2003 was my first year at Tech. The offense was amazing but the defense needed a lot of work. I watched us hand atm one of their worst losses in school history as well as a lot of shootout games. Welkers punt return against colorado was amazing.

2008 was by far the best I’ve ever experienced, but I think my favorite season was 1995. We had come off boring back to back 6-6 seasons and expectations weren’t all that high for us. Spike led the boys to a 9-3 season that started off with an OH-SO CLOSE loss at Penn State. A weird 9-7 loss to Baylor in week three had us all thinking this would be another clunker of a year. But then came Zach Thomas’ INT return against the Aggies. Went on to a fun to watch 55-41 win over the USAF Academy in the Copper Bowl.
Lots of good personal things happened that year for me, as well, so the 1995 season really stands out as my favorite.
still one of my favorite all time plays in Tech history
At least until Harrell to Crab in 2008. I can remember that play like it was yesterday. Still can’t figure out what the hell the Ag’s were thinking throwing on that play. I think it was 3rd and long, but punt the damn ball…Loved it.

Zach
‘95 was a great year. That Zach interception started the onslaught of several butt-whippins’ for the Ags. Hanspard was a tremendous weapon, Marcus Coleman, Jerome Lang, Robert Johnson. That defense was a top ten unit.

2008 is getting all the love - I also loved 2005
The 1st time Texas Tech was ever the site of ESPN Gameday (vs. Texas in Austin – A friend said it was a sign of the apocalypse). Tech climbed into the Top 10 for the 1st time since my freshman year in 1977. Tech went to the Cotton Bowl for only the 3rd time in school history & played much, much better than the last time they went in 1995 vs. USC. We were one ugly assed Alabama field goal away from having had the best football season in my adult life to that date.

don't forget
Also one correct call by the office on their only TD when that receiver put his knee down on grass but they never blew the play dead. But I agree, ’05 was a lot of fun too.

Hey we won that game! Those kids got free textbooks and we won !
No we lost but we did get to see in person the ugliest successful field goal in the history of American Football
You're right
Completely forgot they wiped that win off the books for Bama. So I guess we did win. LOL

My adopted favorite team vs. .....
the team I physically, psychologically, emotionally, and oftentimes proctilogically despise…( I do seem to drop the F-bomb more when that name is mentioned!) I have never been so irate with officiating then when that knee hit the ground!

My Freshman Year at Tech - 1976
Also coincided with the best Texas Tech team that I’ve seen. But for the Houston loss, Tech could have been in the conversation for the national championship. Both the defense and the offense had players who had substantial careers in the NFL, and there has never been a leader like Rodney Allison since 1976 (although Steve Scheffield hinted at such ability).
I’m hoping that my alltime favorite Tech team is actually ahead of us. Guns up!
2008
the buzz in lubbock was palpable. it was just electric in the city for a few weeks. 2008 was definetly my favorite season so far.

Gotta be '08.
That was some of the best football I’ve ever seen played on offense, and the defense stepped up when it mattered until we wound up in Oklahoma. Sure it was epic disappointment, and late November on was awful because we all thought we were going to run the gauntlet, but in the end what most people remember most is just how good we were that year and how much fun it was watching our “system” guys and crazy coach beat the hell out of just about everybody.
My favorite part of 2008 besides the UT game was when Lee Corso said we would loose to OSU the following week. Little did he know the butt kicking that was waiting the following week.

Favorite TTU Team.....
So hard..but 1972 was a great team…1976 and Rodney Allison….and of course 2008. What can be said….3 great teams….3 different styles….yet I loved them all equally!
Wreck’Em Tech
Ditto...
Exactly what I was thinking. I was in school during the ‘72 & ’76 seasons (yes I’m that damn old) and those were great teams; but 2008 was sooo exciting and I got to attend every game (except OU, thankfully)!
