Double-T Nation Daily Diatribe :: QB Rankings and Tubs = CEO

Quarterback Rankings: NE StatePaper's Samuel McKeown is ranking all of the offensive and defensive units, ranking the quarterbacks yesterday with the Red Raiders checking in at #3 (shockingly ahead of TAMU, who probably has the best QB in the conference):
3. Texas Tech
Projected Starter: Taylor Potts (3,440/22/13) or Sticks (Steven) Sheffield (1,219/14/4)
Strengths: The Red Raiders have two proven starters, each of whom have played in, and won, important games. In a limited sample, Sheffield was brilliant, arguably the Big 12’s best quarterback. But he got hurt during a win at Nebraska and played sparingly thereafter. Potts looks more the part, but throws balls into coverage.
Weaknesses: Two potential starters doesn’t necessarily make one great player. Plus - what does Tech become without Mike Leach to coach the offense? The "Air Raid" system wasn’t complicated, so perhaps Potts and Sheffield don’t miss a beat.
More QB Rankings: ESPN's David Ubben (he also has some video giving his thoughts on the Big 12 South) is ranking the top 5 quarterbacks in the Big 12 and Steven Sheffield makes the top 5:
5. Steven Sheffield, Texas Tech
Another small leap of faith here in betting Sheffield wins the starting job over Taylor Potts, who started the majority of the 2009 season. Sheffield's mobility may better suit Neal Brown's variation of the Air Raid, which gives quarterbacks the freedom to tuck-and-run at any moment, but durability has become a concern for the senior, who broke the same bone in his foot for the second time this spring after suffering the same injury last season.
Special Teams Previews: DMN's Mike Graham previews the special teams. Nothing really to note here, except that the special teams did improve, but Tuberville let go of the former special teams coach, Eric Russell, and Tuberville is in charge of all special teams.
More on the New Head Trainer: College Football Talk got some quotes from Mike Leach's lawyer, Ted Liggett, regarding the hire of Arnold Gamber. Not surprisingly, Liggett is asking some of the same questions that we asked yesterday, which is that this seems like an odd hire considering the everything that happened in December. In any event, here's Liggett
"One can taste the irony of this recent hire," Liggett, a graduate of Texas Tech and the university's School of Law, wrote to CFT via email. "Will Craig James demand the new trainer be dismissed based simply on the pending allegations against him? If Texas Tech is so dedicated to protecting their student-athletes from abusive coaches/trainers, etc., why make this move?
As I said yesterday, there appear to be some real questions about Chaz Ramsey, especially the chop-block on Glen Dorsey. If any Auburn fans can give us some more information on what happened, I think we'd all appreciate any additional back-story on Gamber and Ramsey. Again, there is litigation pending (Ramsey sued just about everyone, but his suit against Gamber is still on-going) and we're all innocent until proven guilty . . . right?
Tubs = CEO: AOL Fanhouse's Terrance Harris talked with head coach Tommy Tuberville about changing the culture at Texas Tech, including dressing like a sharp-dressed man:
"I think it's important that the players recognize, 'Here is a guy, he's changing things but he's acting like the CEO of our team or athletic department,'" Tuberville said to FanHouse from behind his desk. "I would love to wear shorts and stuff up here but I am obviously the front figure of selling this program, not just to people who are not Tech fans but to Tech fans right now ... alumni and faculty. I think you need show a sense of CEO pride. I did this at Auburn, I did it at Ole Miss the first few years. I always wore a tie because you never know who you are going to run into. First impressions are always big. My dad taught me that years and years ago.
"When people see me they will say, 'The guy may not know how to coach but he knows how to dress.'"

Former Red Raider in WSOP: ESPN Dallas' Jeff Caplan has a story on former Texas Tech Red Raider, Nathan Doudney (he eventually transferred to Gonzaga after not getting along with Bob Knight, shocking, I know).

CTT has to be praying that sticks can start
This is not meant to beat up on Potts, but that Baylor game showed me everything I need to see.
If potts is our starter, I am predicting a few losses where there shouldn’t be, and a VERY rough start for tubs. I’m not pleased to feel this way, but I do have eyes.
Good lord, can you imagine him tucking and running?
He will serve well as a backup.

I agree
The Baylor game, the UT game, The UH game, the OSU game, I thought Potts just wasn’t able to finish. I truly believe that the outcome of the New Mexico game and the Michigan State game would have been a lot closer had Potts not been replaced. Having said that though Potts did play well against OU (unless OU just was terrible that day or something).
We ran the ball like we were Wisconsin the day of the OU victory
So all we learned that day was Potts can hand the ball off.

Jerrod Johnson
I do not think the best QB in the conference in 2010 has a completion percentage below 60%.
I hope that Seth was joking
Johnson hasn’t shown me enough (I know, 52-30……..) to be anointed the top QB in the league. He’s a poor man’s Vince Young, and that’s all he’ll ever be.

A&M
will be a flop this season. Too many high expectations for a team that only produced one quality win against a worthy competitor in 2009. I say the Aggies finish 6-7 once more. Johnson is way over rated at QB. I personally think he has Zebbie like tendencies.

How do they finish 6-7?
That means they would be 6-6 during the regular season, but somehow made a bowl game (and lost).
Unless you’re playing the toughest schedule in the nation, 6-6 will not get you in a bowl.

They were 6-7 last year
There are 68 bowl teams these days. That’s more than half the division one schools.

bah
I stand corrected. I thought they wound up 7-6 my bad.

or
Maybe I was hoping they were 7-6. so that way that loss (which, by the way, Beergut wants everyone to know the score was 52-30) looks a little better….
Speaking of, did he go back under his bridge/rock/where ever trolls hang out at now-a-days?

I guess if I'm given a list of the better starting QB's in the Big 12
J. Johnson, B. Gabbert, L. Jones, Potts/Sheffield, then I’d probably pick Johnson b/c I think he’s still got room to improve, with Gabbert closely behind him. If it’s not Johnson, then who would everyone else pick?

I'd go with Griffin.
But upon further review I think you’re right. This is a weak Big 12 field.
By year’s end, however, at least a few of these guys will be real studs.
I would not be ashamed naming either Potts or Sheffield ahead of any of these guys.
Yes, Griffin is there, absolutely.
And yes, I wouldn’t be afraid to throw Potts or Sheffield into the mix, but considering injuries last year and their resume to date, it was either Johnson or Gabbert for me.

If he stays healthy a full season, Sheffield will be the best QB in the Big 12
I suspect if you extrapolate his limited stats last season to a full 12 game schedule, they would be a lot more impressive. Except that nasty habit he has of throwing a pick 6 every game. Fortunately he has the good habit of following his pick 6’s with a TD drive to answer. But still, those need to go.

I just saw this on espn. It says that USC will not be in the Coaches Poll at all this year, thus not letting them into the BCS formula. I think that’s a great idea as a punishment for them, but that is really crappy for the rest of the Pac10.
Since USC isn’t ranked but still goes on to beat most of the other teams in the Pac10, it can only have a negative impact for the whole conference. Teams will have additional losses with nothing to even show for it in their SOS. Even if they win, again, nothing to show for it in their SOS. So there is absolutely no reason to play them this year. That is BS. If I were the other teams in the conference, like say Oregon, I would bring this up and consider refusing to play that bunch of cheaters. They could even cite that playing them could be financially harmful because it could hurt bowl positioning, etc. The backlash from that is what could really hurt USC’s program, although i know it realistically wouldn’t happen.
They were already out of the BCS formula anyway
since they can’t partake in post season action for the next two years.

My reaction to the USC story was "Tech just moved up 1 spot in the polls"
It’s a glass half full sort of reaction.

All of the computers in the BCS (the only place SOS is taken into effect) will still be counting USC.
The only possible effect would be if human voters don’t give Oregon credit for beating a good(?) USC team.
And since the bowls are all set and the Pac 10 rarely gets two BCS teams, every other team should get into a better bowl than if USC was not banned.
Should we worry about the Gamber hire?
Or do we trust Tub’s judgment on this guy? I mean he is not the least controversial but it appears to me that he got dragged into this whole thing because of Hugh Nall and others. I mean did he really mistreat the player or is he getting sued because he questioned the ‘manhood’ of that kid? Or do they both mean the samething? just confused.
Too much is being made of this
This hire will have no effect on the situation that occured. This guy may prove to be a great hire.

They say clothes make the man
The only people I ever see wearing asuit and tie in my office building (and I work in the national HDQ of a very large multinational company) are salesmen. It’s like the weasel uniform of the new millenium. Tubs’ ideas are right out of the 1950’s. But if he can win games dressed like a dork, more power to him.

I started at my company in 1995 & it was already a casual dress company
I think of suits as being worn by lawyers who have to appear in court & salesmen. Suits are becoming like the powdered wigs the barristers in Great Britain have to wear when arguing a case: A shadow of an earlier time.

May I.....
suggest you subscribe to Esquire or GQ. If you want to dress down that is fine, but let’s not pass judgment on others with some since of class. Suits have been in style for like the last 500 years in some form so I don’t see them going away any time soon.
FORZA ROSSI
Taking the HEAT...and I don't mean LaBron....
I think it will look ridiculous if Tuberville wears a tie during games. He will be the only one in the Big 12-2 that will be doing that.
He must have forgotten how HOT it can get in Texas early in the season! I have to wear a tie for my job (salesman), and it is a killer in 100-degree Dallas heat and 50% plus humidity!
And if he can’t coach, he will look like a DORK who can’t coach.
I don’t ever remember seeing him wear a tie on the sidelines at Auburn.
