Red Raider Gridiron | Punter Competition and Hammerhead Ward
Practice Reports: The official site has the goods and and video. Yesterday head coach Tommy Tuberville talked punters and what he wants out of his quarterbacks (more on that below), IR Detron Lewis and WR Alexander Torres. The official site also exclusively reports that Torres is pretty good:
Alex Torres, Texas Tech's leading receiver last season, is looking even better in his sophomore season. Torres has caught virtually everything that has been thrown his way since training camp started on Saturday. That should come as no surprise to anyone as he hauled in a team-high 67 receptions in 2009. In today's practice, he made a couple of spectacular grabs so let's hope he keeps improving every day.
LAJ's Don Williams writes his notebook, which details that Tuberville details what he wants in a quarterback:
"The one thing I’m looking at is leadership and not turning the ball over — know when to pull the ball down and run, not just throw it up for grabs,’’ Tuberville said.
Snip
"As I told them, just throwing a completion is not going to get them on the field,’’ Tuberville said. "Running the offense and keeping control of the ball and moving it down the field is what makes plays.’’
Snip
"But it’s all those things in between the deep ball — getting the running game going, being the leader in the huddle, or the so-called huddle, on the sideline,’’ Tuberville said. "All those things are going to make a difference.’’
This sounds about right, doesn't it?
. . . Tuberville also confirmed what TTUMAR posted yesterday, which is that there are discussions regarding a new video board, where Tuberville has apparently gotten his A-Team together to take care of the current video board:
"I tried to blow it up this summer,’’ he said with a grin. "I’m going to loosen some bolts on it.
AD Gerald Myers says that Tuberville has put in the request:
"Tommy’d really like to see a video screen down here on the south end. We don’t have a time frame for it right now, but it’s something that we’re definitely looking at."
. . . Williams also talked with redshirt freshman WR Eric Ward, who has a new nickname:
"I love it when they run the ball, because I love blocking,’’ he said. Ward said a defensive coach had taken to calling him "Hammerhead" or "Hammer" for short, and the nickname seems to have caught on.
"Ever since then, I just start laying people out,’’ Ward said, "because I want my teammates to do good down field. So I just look for the person that’s slipping, and they’re my target.’’
RP.com and FSSW, both by Travis Cram, has two practice reports with different media outlets. In the RP article, Cram has an update on this week's injuries, which is that DT Britton Barbee had successful surgery to repair his torn Achilles tendon and redshirt freshman DE Kerry Hyder just has a sprained knee. Cram writes that Hyder could be a starting defensive tackle alongside Colby Whitlock. Huh? In the FSSW article, Cram has this tidbit about OT Terry McDaniel on the QB decision:
Tech senior offensive lineman Terry McDaniel said he does not know who will win the starting spot, but that all the team will be behind either guy. Playing left tackle, he’s a good guy for any right-handed quarterback to have on his side.
"As far as what I’ve seen, Potts and Sticks are both great leaders," McDaniel said. "Whoever starts, it doesn’t matter to me, I love them both. Whoever starts, I’m behind their back and I’ve got the blind side for them."
Just a couple of things here, which is that McDaniel is just a sophomore, but this quote somewhat makes me think that McDaniel is back at left tackle, which is fine by me. Just a little something I noticed.
So much more after the jump.
Punter Competition: LAJ's Don Williams writes about the punter competition between senior Jonathan LaCour and sophomore Ryan Erxleben. LaCour would have won the job if the competition was just this spring:
"Coming out of spring, LaCour would have been our punter, if we’d have done what we’re doing now,’’ Tuberville said Tuesday. "It’s going to be a lot of competition. Both have strong legs, and they look pretty good so far working with a couple of new snappers.’’
LaCour also talked about his suspension from last year:
The Big 12 suspended him the first half of the season for testing positive for a banned substance. LaCour said it was an over-the-counter product he had taken one time — the day before a drug test.
He said he had researched the product online, and did not find the name on a banned substance list. He went ahead and took it, though Tech coaches warn players not to take any supplement that isn’t OKed by medical staff first.
"I guess technically the substance was listed on the bottle,’’ LaCour said, "but it was in a chemical compound form that only a scientist or chemist could read. I had no way of understanding it.
"I should have definitely got it checked before. It was my mistake, and I paid the consequences for it."
I'm glad to know what the situation was last year as I've been thinking about this since his suspension.
Tweets: OC Neal Brown tweets and the first tweet is from yesterday and the second is from Monday:
Both QB's threw the ball really well today. Others who impressed were Batch, James, Franks, Torres, Stephens. Pleased with OL today.
Standouts from yesterday's practice Leong, Torres, Zoo, Fisher, Stephens, Crawford, and Olson. At it again this afternoon.
Irked that Practices are Closed: LAJ's Courtney Linehan is irked that practices are now closed, writing that the public that pays for season tickets deserves to have practices open. I guess this is to clarify somethings that Linehan wrote, which is that it almost makes it sound as if the media has no access to practices. They do, in fact Tuberville is making players more available than Leach ever did and the first 20 minutes for every practice is open to the media to get their daily bit of film. As you guys and gals know, the video that you see in a two minute clip from the local media is pretty mundane. Linehan also writes that had the practices been open in December of last year, that the media would have been the watchdog (I think this is her point) to know what's going on between coaches and athletes. I guess I just don't understand Linehan's gripe, other than she thinks that the media and public deserve more than the access and season tickets that they paid for. As an aside, I bought a package of sunflower seeds yesterday and told the store clerk that that I deserved more because I have always purchased sunflower seeds from this store and I always purchase David's sunflower seeds. The clerk told me if I wanted more sunflower seeds then I would need to pay for them and you get what you pay for.
Miscellaneous: MyPlainview's Kevin Lewis writes that Plainview is proud of former Red Raider, Jamar Wall . . . I missed this earlier in the week, but Rock M Nation's Bill C. has a BTBS for the Iowa St. defense (also a link to the offense there as well) . . . the Denver Post's John Henderson previews the Red Raiders . . . ESPN's David Ubben has the APR scores from last year, which is graduation rates and stuff, and Mike Leach had a rating of 962, which was third in the Big 12 . . .
Video: KAMC with a look at the quarterbacks (is there anyway that the good folks at KAMC can make their video screen just a smidge bigger?). . . Fox34 with a few seconds of day 4 practices . . .

Heads up (or leftover venting from yesterday's fan post)
I am all for a larger video screen. The “swatch” version that we have now sucks. It is too small, hard to see in day games, and every game it keeps showing those damn QuikQuak ducks.
HOWEVER, the “traditionalist” Katfish needs to understand that the Giant Double T scoreboard is a one of a kind icon. It is unique to Tech and has stood proud for many years. Removing it is just plain wrong. Remember the 39-33 shinning brightly? why would anyone give that up?
With regards to those who would consider me an “old fart” and that I need to move on, so be it. But would you tear down the Statue of Liberty because it is old? If your answer is yes, then you need to also consider tearing down myers…..he is older.

Can't have your cake and eat it too....
You’re riding the fence here blackbeard….“I am all for a larger video screen” but….“Removing (the old double T) is just plain wrong.” I love the old Double T too, but I think you gotta pick a side here….having both just doesn’t seem possible if this proposed new screen is going to stretch the entire south endzone.
I empathize with all the “purists” who love the old double t scoreboard….had some of the greatest moments of my life staring at that scoreboard…but I’m all for upgrading from the civic you had in highschool to the BMW you buy after you’ve worked hard to earn it.
At this point, alot of people’s flatscreen TVs at home are bigger than the screen we have in our stadium. I wouldn’t be surprised if there are 5A Highschools that have larger screens. This should be embarassing to all of us as alums and you better believe this kind of stuff, no matter how petty it might seem, leaves lasting impressions on recruiting visits.
As our success continues and the growth of our program evolves, everything else has to continue to evolve with it…from our facilities, to our academics, to our enrollment, and definitely to our stadium and technological advances. We can’t afford to allow traditionalism to hold us back from our exponential growth right now. The momentum has been mounting for 10+ years now…gotta keep on rollin.
As for the old faithful double T scoreboard….she’s an icon, no doubt….our statue of liberty? sure, right up there with Will Rogers and Soapsuds. I’m sure there are plenty of places on that gigantic campus where we could relocate her for students, fans and alum to reminice. Why not in the big field across from the stadium….she could flash the scores from famous old games all day and make for an awesome place to do a group photo during tailgates….
But in the Jones Stadium…..give me a big-ass, Texas sized, endzone-stretching high definition monstrosity of a megatron so I can see every drop of blood explode off Garret Gilbert’s chin when he takes a pop from Brian Duncan…..and each drop is bigger than my face!
The current Lilliputian TV sits on top of the Letterman's Club/Ticket Office in the North end zone
Assuming it gets relegated to the scrap heap, why wouldn’t you just put the Double T scoreboard there? But build a new one thet reflects the double T logo we have been using since the late 90’s with shadows, etc… Or at least repaint the one when you move it to reflect the current brand.
Disagree with rebuilding
and in a way disagree with tearing down the little screen. That screen is the south student section’s (aka the noisy part’s) only way to view things happening in the north side, and replays. They need to stay pissed off and loud dammit! I think it could easily fit behind the miniscreen though.
Yeah, I would like to have our cake and eat on the scoreboard/big screen thinking, it does not have to be either/or.
women should put pictures of missing husbands on beer cans
It takes money.. but!
enclose the north side a bit more, move the double t over there, put neons on the outside and have that as the only part of the north side not enclosed. Or even frame it.
It's not the right time
I understand that people are unhappy with the current replay screen. However, we should should still not get rid of the double t scoreboard. I love that scoreboard, and there is no need to get rid of it. Plus, there is no reason to even buy a new replay screen. 2001 raider said:

Have we earned it? We got a share of the big xii south title… once. That’s it. Maybe we should get a nice, big, new replay screen as a sign of accomplishment once we actually win the big xii outright. Plus, i’m pretty sure that the next stage of stadium expansion is filling out the bowl on the north end. So, until both of those two things happen, i do not believe that we should be thinking about getting a new replay screen.
If we happen to win the big xii before we fill in the bowl on the north side, then when we do fill in the bowl, we can also erect the new replay screen at the same time. If we build the north end of the stadium before we win the big xii, then the replay screen can just wait.

Your chances of finishing ahead of Texas and OU in the Big 12 South go way up if recruits like your stadium
We could wait until the cows come home for a Big 12 South title. Might as well make the stadium as cool as possible so we can start recruiting the same talent Texas and OU go after.
Well, LOL, we all know it takes money...
why does that matter ? For some of us on a blog site, we have all the money we need … to talk about ideas fantacize and have fun with the thoughts…it is not like the ones who are developing the plan(s) are perusing the blogs for ideas or suggestions….

Great stuff, Seth!
Get rid of the DoubleT Scoreboard?!?!?! Nuts! B-beard is correcto mundo on this, it’s an icon. Not really at the level of Lady Liberty but for Tech folk, how could you demo this?
And regarding open practice article/editorial by Courtney from the LAJ….IN TUBERVILLE I TRUST. I can wait a little longer for Tech football, don’t need some reporter’s account of what they saw 50 yards from the action. September 5th will be here soon enough……patience grasshopper, patience.
I am confused here
“As I told them, just throwing a completion is not going to get them on the field,’’ Tuberville said. "Running the offense and keeping control of the ball and moving it down the field is what makes plays.’’
Doesn’t completing passes move the ball downfield? I am little confused here or does he literally mean that he wants to see more “running” in the offense? I mean throwing the ball downfield was pretty effective in the past 10 years. But I am sure they know what they are talking about, I was just a little confused about this.
IMO
I think what he is getting at is forcing the pass. He’s probably wanting his guys to read the coverage better and make the decision to pass or not. I suspect he’s pressing with defense more to force the QB to throw a successful passing route or pull down and run effectively.
"You've got to find your inner pirate" - Mike Leach
I think he's talking about completing passes in passing drills in practice
No pass rush, no fear of having your brains scrambled if you don’t do something & quick. Those throws are probably a lot easier to complete. Sustaining drives takes more than a great practice arm (of course I’m alluding to Seth Doege in all this).
Closing Practice
Linehan needs to understand that she is covering one of the major college programs. ESPN is reporting that Alabama has closed practice and Florida is considering the same to keep NFL Scouts/agents/agent contacts away from there players. Not sure that is why Katfish is closing practice but I am for it. We don’t need reporters counting attempts and completions to fuel the QB fire. This team needs time to install the new Defense and perfect the timing of the Offense.
I'll just go ahead and say it.....
Courtney Linehan is an idiot.
If you keep practices open to the public you run the risk of having prying eyes from other schools spy on your offensive and defensive schemes.
Simple Math
Brand New Defense + Tweaked Offense + Shroud of Secrecy + UT three weeks into the season = Victory
When Leach ran the same offense for the 10th year running, who would care if his fall camp was open or closed, UT had 10 years of film to watch for game time tendencies.
Now that we have a new staff that has never worked together before as a whole noone can know what to expect exactly. Why let anyone come it and watch our formations and base plays when right now UT is relegated to watching old Troy film and will have to work 90 hour weeks to try to analyze our first to games against opponents that should allow both our offense and defense to stay fairly vanilla.
I’d be concerned if Tommy opened up the practices… good move on his part imho.
How bout
Giving ctt his big screen if he wins the b12 south. We can then move the double t screen to the tailgating area/practice field because we will have major overflow crowds.
I would also like to bury Gerald in the end zone with his arms in a td pose facing the end zone. I have much to push for this year.

+1
Or once tt wins the big xii, we get him a godzillatron where the currect replay screen is and leave the double t scoreboard alone

Additional Simple Math
Expanding on JDee’s post:
Brand New Defense + Tweaked Offense + Shroud of Secrecy + SMU & UNM in first two games + UT three weeks into the season = CLOSED PRACTICE!
One of the best advantages we have this season is UT early and not having to show too much in the SMU and UNM games prior to playing the horns. Why in the world is that so hard for her to understand???
And ‘78 is right. Bama, Florida among other programs have closed practice. I particularly liked Meyer’s reasoning with “keeping the scumbags out”.

DoubleT scoreboard
I’m already talking to my wife and checking with my HOA about installing the DoubleT scoreboard in my backyard. Not sure I can pull it off, but that would be badass.
Big DoubleT scoreboard with 39-33 score blazing right in the middle of Round Rock! Pretty sure all the horn fans around here won’t approve….

Ditto
You do this nd I’ll be up there from Slaughter & Manchaca to see that and drink a beer, or two, or three, to it.
TTpilk Psalm 117:
1 ¶ O praise the LORD, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people.
2 For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the LORD endureth for ever. Praise ye the LORD.
Likely don't have the funds to pull it off
But what a sight that would be! Still would enjoy the beer or three with or without the scoreboard. :)

Poor Courtney...
I get the idea that the head editor in chief of all the local media newspaper person gave her an assignment that would raise her level of controversy and drop her popularity so she could be like her peers.
Did she cover TTU last season ? The press are getting more than they have in 10 years…..and no…I mean NO, the events of last season would not have been avoided by the presence of the reporting media….(roll eyes !)

The Double-T scoreboard and Closed Practices …
Scenario One: Move the Double-T scoreboard to the Southwest corner. Place a Megatron Video Screen in the middle of the South End-Zone. Order a new DT scoreboard for the Southeast corner. The new one would be the new shaded DT that has been in use for about 10years. Bookend Double-T scoreboards for all to see the score and stats.
Scenario Two: Still move the DT scoreboard to the SW corner and buy a new DT scoreboard for the SE corner. Then move the Lilliputian to the middle of the South End-Zone. Have the Megatron Video screen placed on the North End-Zone.
I like the second scenario because it gives the "Student Section" the visual view of the new Video Screen. It also eliminates the noise from the Megatron from overwhelming the students and Tech Fan sections. In case none of you have ever sat under or near one of these massive Video Screens the noise is overwhelming. Let the noise cancel out the cheers from the visiting team’s fans and let them see the videos on the old Lilliputian.
If they do remove the old Double-T scoreboard they need to place it on the campus somewhere. They could still tie it in to the game being played so those walking or driving by could see the score.
Possible sites. 1 -The Southeast corner near the Alum center or Band practice field.
2 – Southwest corner near the United Spirit Center and Rec Center
Closed practices are the way to go. Keep our opponents guessing on how to defend against our attacks and how much our Defense has improved.
Regarding the Double T Scoreboard
My son-in-law and I have agreed to chain ourselvers to the scoreboard (ala Al Bundy in “Married With Children” fame) before anyone is allowed to tear it down.
By the way, is everyone at DTN practicing their best BOO!!! whenever Nancy James and/or Gerald Myers are on the field?
Symbols Matter
The beloved Double T must stay, it binds us, and it defines us. I admit that over grown TV.’s are important but so are the symbols of a great University. Keep the practices closed, it gives us an edge.
