Red Raider Gridiron | Sheffield: "I didn’t do many good things."

Sheffield Struggles in Scrimmage:  The big news yesterday was that QB Steven Sheffield admitted that he clearly struggled in yesterday's scrimmage.  The official site has a few notes, nothing really ground-breaking, but there's about 20 minutes of post-scrimmage video from head coach Tommy Tuverville, offensive coordinator Neal Brown, defensive coordinator James Willis, QB Taylor Potts, QB Steven Sheffield, LB Brian Duncan and DT Colby Whitlock.  While listening, I took some notes (not a transcript, emphasis mine):

Tommy Tuberville:  Good start, nice to get some things on film.  Organized, lots of work to do.  Looks at effort and assignment.  Kicking game needs work.  Good effort today.  On Taylor Potts and Steven Sheffield it's about making the right decision because one will be running with the second team, both made good decisions and bad decisions.  On other parts of the game, the defense played with intensity early, but gave up some touchdowns.  Some reps will change as a result of this scrimmage, and will change next week as well.  RB Eric Stephens looked good, RB Baron Batch sat out this scrimmage with a sore shoulder.  Will pick up running, although their endurance has been good.  Not in playing shape yet.

Neal Brown:  Initial reactions was that there was good effort, wants to wait to see the film to evaluate.  Potts and Sheffield were pretty even before today, there will be another test next week.  Thought the offensive line performed well, needs to find cohesion, Justin Keown solidified at center, Chris Olson stepped out to right tackle.  Thought the running backs were okay, but held out Batch and Stephens for the most part.  Best receivers thus far are Alexander Torres, Detron Lewis, Lyle Leong and Jacoby FranksFranks has had the best camp thus far of the receivers.

James Willis:  Overall pleased.  Played fast, trying not to overwhelm.  The safeties and secondary are playing well, LB Bront Bird is the heart of the defense and playing well.  Have more depth at defensive line, good competition.  Now has to get the right combination.  Scott Smith is unbelievable, but he's physical.  Practice fast to put pressure on the defense so that the game slows down.

Taylor Potts:  Asked about Sheffield saying that Potts had the better day:  Coach will assess his performance, and his goal is to just have fun.  Lot of fun playing in the scrimmage.  Trying to stay confident the entire camp, he is confident he has the skills.  Knows it's just a matter of going out and doing it.  Knows he's not the greatest quarterback ever, he knows he doesn't have to be great.  OC Brown is very fundamental specific and knowing what to pick out while watching film.

Steven Sheffield:  Could have went better on his end.  Didn't have many good plays.  Made a bunch of dumb decisions.  Knew the scrimmage was important, tried to do too much.  Definitely hurt his chances, but will have to work hard next week.

Brian Duncan:  Still have a lot to learn on the defense.  Lead defense dominated today.  Duncan's adjustment is that he's going to be very versatile.  Like to play against this offense because this offense plays so fast and the games will be slower.  Thinks the team finished better.  Got a sack on Sheffield.  The offense is more aggressive.  Thinks the running game, screen game and passing game are going to be good.  The offensive line is much faster.

Colby Whitlock:  The defense is much different.  Much more aggressive.  With Myles Wade and Donald Langley, he doesn't think they took a step back in terms of talent.  The coaching styles between Tuberville and Leach, the current coaches are all business, not that the former staff wasn't.  Scott Smith and newcomers are adjusting well.

Well, this is delicious isn't it?  Sheffield stating publicly that he struggled is pretty significant.  Again, we really don't know (no one knows since practices are closed) what happened, other than taking Sheffield at his word.  I keep asking this question, but if you're OC Brown and you're basing your decision on who is the better quarterback, what criteria do you use?  What if Sheffield sucks it up the entire fall practice?  What if Potts shines?  Who are you going to be disappointed in?  Are you going to "blame" Tuberville or OC Brown for making a decision on a quarterback or are you going to "blame" Sheffield for not stepping up and being a better player?

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'll cheer for whoever starts.

LAJ's Don Williams has the direct quotes from Sheffield:

Sheffield, often jovial with the media, was grim.

When asked in what way he had performed poorly, Sheffield replied, "Just everything."

"Every play basically," he said. "I didn’t do many good things. More than anything, I just didn’t do what I’d practiced all week and implement the stuff that we put in all week. I just made a bunch of dumb decisions. I don’t know if I thought too much or didn’t think enough, but yeah, it’s got to improve. Real soon."

Notes, Notes and More Notes:  LAJ's Don Williams has some notes from yesterday.  As mentioned above, Keown is solidly at center, and Olson is at right tackle.  OC Brown had this to say about the tackle competition:

Conspicuously missing from that tackles discussion was sophomore Terry McDaniel, who started four games last year before going out with a knee injury.

Brown said McDaniel didn’t practice well last week and needs to pick up his level of play.

"With Terry, it’s not a physical deal," Brown said. "It’s mental. He needs to play with more confidence. It’s hard to play on the edge if you’re not real, real confident. Hopefully, he can have a better week. It’s basically Okafor and Waddle and Olson competing right now. Beau Carpenter’s in the mix, too."

McDaniel needs to get his ass in gear.

Brown Knows Pressure:  LAJ's Adam Zuvanich writes about how OC Brown knows that there's pressure as offensive coordinator for this offense, but Brown seems to keep things in perspective:

"There’s things that really are pressure," Brown said. "If you’ve got a couple of kids and you get fired, that’s pressure. If you’ve got a loved one that’s sick and you’ve got to take care of them, that’s pressure. This isn’t real pressure.

"The worst thing that can happen with either one of these guys is they’re not the starting quarterback. We’re going to deal with it either way. I tell them all the time, there’s three billion Chinese that don’t care who the starting quarterback is at Texas Tech, so I don’t feel pressure."

Fan Day:  The football team and volleyball team had their fan-day yesterday afternoon.  LAJ's Adam D. Young has the story and there's a Spotted gallery if you want to check out some photos.

QB

Looks like this QB battle just got more interesting. May the best man win and I will accept the winner of this battle as our starting QB. I think this new defensive scheme may have shaken up things offensively among the QB’s. More pressure coming at the line and ends probably forces these guys to make decisions much quicker. The good thing is they are both healthy. I have a feeling Potts has elevated his game since we saw him last season. Sheffield has been my favaorite in this battle but I’m will believe in these coaches and their accessment of who will be a better QB for this offense. Glad to see Scott Smith’s name mentioned defensively. I think our defensive line with Wade, Langley, Whilock and Smith could be the best ever. Also, Bird may really shine at the MLB position this season. Right now I’m more curious about our secondary but lots of players to rotate in and out for maximum results should help.

I'm a Sticks fan but...

will support whomever the coaches choose. My biggest concern is that Potts has always seemed to do well in practice – it’s in the games that he freezes up like a deer in headlights (with the exception of the Texas game last year). Hope Sticks has a good week.

Can we invite ut to play us in a practice game?

Potts may be able to shine if so. We shall see, would feel better if sticks was tearing it up.

UT will only scrimmage their girls’ field hockey team since getting beat in 7-on-7 by the fearsome Bobcats of SWTSU . . . or whatever they now go by.

by CRV on Aug 16, 2010 2:42 PM CDT up reply actions

They are the Texas State Bobcats

For those not in the “Know”. Texas Technological College became Texas Tech University at some point in the late 60’s or early 70’s. A while later, there was a push by some crazed students to ditch the “Double T” and rename the school Texas State University. Naturally, they got buzzed and we remained Texas Tech University. I hope they NEVER rid themselves of the “Double T”. It may actually be one of the most recognizable initials in all of collegedom (is that a word?). We are unique in many ways, with that “Double T” being our most beloved symbol.

Texas State University . . .

Isn’t that the team that Kathy Ireland kicked for in Necessary Roughness? What a fine piece of cinematic greatness that was.

Switsu was the name in my day

It was the place Central Texas kids went to and flunked out of their first year before transferring to a real school with more acedemics & much less partying.

by mbrown603 on Aug 17, 2010 1:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Didn’t they make the Playboy list of Top Party Schools back in the late 80’s/early 90’s?

by CRV on Aug 17, 2010 5:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Southwest Texas State was probably too small to get considered in the national lists

Those lists always seem to include Wisconsin, Texas, Cal State Santa Barbara and San Diego State as the classic party schools.

I have to think 10 years of nothing but top 10% students must have tamed UT as a party school somewhat.

For me, there is no difference in the qb situation.

Nothing changed, it still comes down to film review, assessments, conversations within the staff, and whomever starts getting the most reps will be seen about next Monday…then we can continue our season of second guessing by the majority of fans who post. ;-)

Good news on the OL from my perspective. That Olson moves to right tackle has a hidden meaning…someone behind him and Keown is good enough to allow that to happen…I am guessing it is Gray. So we currently have Edwards as solid at right guard, Keown at center, Gallington still working to master right guard, Olson doing well at right tackle, and somebody at left tackle, probably Okafor—McDaniel is not there mentally yet and Waddle is limited by a hamstring.

I really appreciate Whitlock’s comments about having the talent, I wish he had mentioned Smith’s name along with Wade and Langley.

Good news from Coach Willis about the Safeties and Secondary, sounds like they are getting done what he is expecting…he also sounds pretty high on Bird and Duncan.

Somebody please light a fire at H back !!!!

Clark was a pretty highly ranked recruit I believe. I was just curious where he was in the mix. Hopefully he will be a good one in the future.

This is my last week in ’Cana, what about a beer?

by RdrPwr on Aug 16, 2010 1:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Sounds like D line is stepping up. Love hearing the word UNBELIEVABLE about Scott Smith. Hopefully that translates at big 12 pace. Our young athletic secondary should have plenty of opportunities to make plays if the D line shows up again this year.

How fast is Franks? Great to hear he is doing well, although I want guys like Eric Ward to force some time. I’d love to hear something about Jeffers breaking a 50 yard run. I’m excited about the run game. Hopefully all this time off for Batch doesn’t mean that he won’t be ready. I get he is a veteran but he has to stay up to par.

by logan5555 on Aug 15, 2010 1:52 PM CDT reply actions

Franks is fast, not blazing.

About 4.5…he was a very good football player at West Orange Starke, played multiple positions sometime in the same game, offense, defense, special teams, reciever, qb, db, return man.

good to hear some praise for our D

i like hearing this kind of thing. I think the D is starting to come together. That is a very good thing. I want to see some play makers on D this season and really open things up for us.

Honesty

You have to admire Sheffield’s honesty, it is rare.

Maybe Tubbs is really good at creating pressure situations in practice for QBs that expose their decision making flaws.

by Kafka on Aug 15, 2010 4:39 PM CDT reply actions

Pretty much blew up the notion that Sticks is "honest" in a previous post...

We do know he talks a LOT, and gets a LOT of attention from the press and fans. Fits the mold of the “modern” athlete I guess, talk enough trash and you’ll get a following, and where the fans follow, so does fortune. Don’t admire that much, but maybe it’s the way you play the game.

his previous comments....

About the old staff may have been ill timed, but the fact that he was critical, doesn’t make him dishonest. He made have had the best coaching, or the worst, either way you or I have no clue.

Not much self editing

Sheffield just says what he thinks. His self critical comments are the opposite of self promotion. One thing that makes the Tech program interesting is so much of the talk by the coaches and players is not politically correct. A lot of programs have coached their athletes so thoroughly to be PC that the player interviews are completely boring.

by Kafka on Aug 15, 2010 10:27 PM CDT up reply actions

That PC thing

I prefer how we operate make our guys and coaches look intelligent and real, why not say what everyone is thinking. The PC BS makes the Mack Browns and Colt McCoys of the world come off looking stupid like trained monkeys. Well we have our heads in the sand and we are just going to play as good as we can play bla bla bla. If Mack Brown were real he would just say well were Texas and we get a lot of help from the officials and the conference, we have more resources than anyone in the country and our fans expect us to win evey game including the national championship but really most of our athelets come to us spoiled prima donnas and most leave even more spoiled so really as coaches we preform quite poorly

Not convinced.....

that Sticks did all that bad..As we dound out from Duncan, he got a sack on Sticks….but I bet other wise it was pretty even…if he is not anthing else the Player formerly known as Nick is a great practice player…..I think it is still very even with TPFKAN having a slight lead @ this point but with lots of football still to practice……no sleepint on this battle…maybe this battle bodes well for the 2010 season!!!!! Lets keep in mind..

That despite the agonizing QB battle we have to witness, we’ll still have a uber solid backup at a position that we all agree needs a solid #2.

Considering we have a solid QB duo, I can rest easy knowing that our “delicate” QB’s may both play by the end of season..

Not pessimistic, actually relieved.

by ConnerTech on Aug 15, 2010 8:21 PM CDT reply actions

Well said Conner

Consider this, UT had Sherrod Harris as the #2 QB on their depth chart until he left the program. He obviously wasn’t gonna beat out Gilbert. However, now they are in a position where the backup QB is likely Conner Wood who has zero college experience.

What position would you rather be in??? You’re bascially one play away from bringing in the #2 guy. I like where we sit with both of these guys…

Quote from OC Brown

Pretty much sums up my thoughts on the QB decision.

"As far as the fan base worrying about who the quarterback’s not going to be, I feel like I’m in a position to where I see them every day, that I’ve got good experience, and that Coach Tuberville and I can make the best decision for this football team," he said.

I know Potts seemed to be a better practice QB than game QB to a lot of Tech fans. Not gonna argue that point. However, keep in mind that coach Brown seems to have very specific reads and progressions he wants out of the QB in his system. My thought is this could be something that helps Potts in games vs last year. Time will tell. Best of luck to both.
