Red Raider Gridiron | Crawford Steps Up Play; Keown Controls Center
Practice Report: The official site has some of the video from yesterday's practice, but I couldn't get the video to start, despite clicking on play 500 times. As a result, I don't have any sort of recap.
Notes, Notes and More Notes: LAJ's Don Williams writes that RB Aaron Crawford and RB Benjamin McRoy are impressing the coaching staff, in particular Crawford, who head coach Tommy Tuberville says has improved substantially over the year:
"(Crawford) has moved way up," Tuberville said. "He’s going to push the two guys in front of him. The attitude’s been real good, he’s catching the ball better than he did in the spring, and he’s catching on to what we’re doing on offense."
Tuberville also mentions that McRoy could see time at special teams due to his speed . . . Williams mentions that WR Tramain Swindall wasn't given any props by OC Neal Brown and that Swindall is working at both inside receiver spots . . . WR Alexander Torres, WR Eric Ward and WR Lyle Leong were out with injury, but nothing serious . . .
Keown Takes Center Stage: LAJ's Don Williams writes about C Justin Keown taking control of the center position during this fall practice (I hate calling it fall practice when the temperature never drops below 80 degrees) and here's something I didn't know, which was that Keown was married for 20 months and then divorced. I'll let Keown explain:
"At first, it was difficult, because we’d been together since junior high school," he said. "We just had to go our different ways. At first, it was bad, but now, we still talk, so it was best for the both of us."
The article keeps referring to Keown as a junior, but the official roster has Keown as a senior. I'm pretty sure he's a senior, but someone help me out in the comments if I'm wrong. Keown also talked about playing last year:
"From that season coming in now has helped tremendously," Keown said, "because I’m not going in — I don’t know what the word is — blindsided, I guess, from seeing the physicalness of the different starters from other teams. I’ve been up against a No. 1 draft pick, (Nebraska’s Ndamukong) Suh. That kind of helps a lot."
The Wiz With The Poster: The Wiz of Odds with the current Texas Tech schedule poster (which he collects and votes on the best before the season):

Video: KAMC with a look at the revamped linebacker position . . . Fox34 with a look at the offensive line . . .
A Man Who Needs No Introduction: I ran across this story early this morning, which is that former Red Raider and Miami Dolphin, will be making an appearance at a Florida casino, however, this isn't what caught my attention. It was that the folks that wrote this press release felt that J.J. Walker needed an introduction:
Comedian Jimmie "JJ" Walker coined the catch-phrase "Dy-no-mite!" as the star of the Good Times sitcom on CBS.
Really? Don't we all know Jimmie Walker or am I just old?
Miscellaneous: FSSW's Matt Scales ranked the top playmakers in the Big 12 and no Red Raiders made the list . . . ESPN's David Ubben ranks the defensive line and DT Colby Whitlock checks in at #5 . . . Brandon Jackson, a DE/TE/LB (and basketball player) from Pennsylvania appears to be seriously considering Texas Tech as an option (I know nothing about him and am having a hard time finding any information on him this morning):
Are you really serious about attending Texas Tech? Everyone always asks me that. They say, 'Do you really want to go that far away?' But there is nothing wrong with me and going away. I just want to go where I fit in and Texas Tech feels like a good fit.

Re: Jimmie Walker
I guess you are just getting old. That introduction was not lost on me.
In your defense I am only 26 and have never actually seen an episode of Good Times. I guess they assume there will be loads of college students reading the article.
I didn't need the introduction
about Jimmie Walker. But I guess I shouldn’t be so proud to admit that I’m of a certain age group or that I ever watched that show…
Introduction
Seth we are getting old. I noticed several folks talking about their favorite summer show as Psch. Man that show talks about the “Old Times” as 1985…….
Some of us remember when the Alamo was a church and
not a bowl

Can't remember for sure, but I do recall one day when
Davy Crockett looked over the wall, saw Santa Anna’s multitude and asked, " Hey are we pouring concrete today?"

And the answer was
No we are roofing a house !

Seth I cannot get any of the downloads to play without interruption. I have defraged my computer, checked all my settings, but still it is very hard to watch the downloads. Does anybody have any ideas. Thanks.
I didn't have any problems viewing the video

Was it Keown?
Did Keown neutralize N.Suh during the Nebraska game? I mean whoever took care of Suh did a magnificent job and I think it was Keown.
Keown did do a fine job
but it was more than him, at times there was help from RG or LG, non of that game was simply one on one.
Kweon is a good football player, I like him, and I like him at center, that is a very important spot, a lot of attention goes to LT or RT, but center may be more significant.
I am wondering who is behind Keown now that Olson is over on the right, whoever he is needs to be named so we can enjoy watching him, his improvement has allowed Olson to move..at least to some degree.

Never convinced about these guys who rank the playmakers before a snap. Yeah its summer and we are bored but it seems a bit of stretch. As far as A. Crawford watching him in 07 was fun. With the exception of Batch he seemed to be the hardest guy to get on the ground of the running backs. He is a very speedy straight ahead guy. I think inside the 30 yard line look out. One block and he’s 5-7 yards up field. As far as the center it’s the start point of everything offensive and Mr. Keown is a capable blocker having spelled Byrnes last year @Nebraska and aTm. I think. I’d tab him as a possible all Big 12 guy by season’s end.
As far as the Wiz of Odds – he says it’s a tough transition for fans and College football. I take that as a hopeful sign in that I don’t think the opposing coaches are ready for Tuberville. I don’t think Mizzou, the Horns, Houston or Colorado’s offense are going to be able to out leg the Raiders defense. I say that because with the exception of Houston none of these are likely to field a dominating offensive scheme. It’s much more likely that the Raider defensive coaches have trouble with SMU, aTm’s and Dana Holgerson’s OSu offenses. In those games the Raider offense is going have to trade scores. Coogs are dangerous but in my mind they aren’t defensively going stop the run game Tubs is going to put on them. With 4 x capable running backs, a more athletic O line, run by capable set of QB’s one of which is likely to be a senior. Remember Tech fumbled over the ball on a rushing play in the third period when it looked as if the Raiders were going to stuff it down their throats in Houston. That potential score would have rendered moot the infamous failed 4th and goal. Just saying by that time I n the season I’d expect a salty Raider crew to have the post season firmly fixed in their sites and be well oiled to boot.
"do routine things routinely"
+1
Though I still think that UH is way overrated. Yes they won last year but I don’t know how much of that can be attributed to their ‘offense’ and how much to some questionable play calling and QB performances on our part.
The way AF destroyed UH in the bowl game
I cannot imagine Tech losing to UH again, especially with the game being played in Lubbock.

The rest of the usual suspects
The swing games at Norman, Baylor and New Mexico I didn’t mention them but the Sooners are going to be much better than last year. Stoops like the O line this year. That’s not good folks. We all know we dedicated fans – that no one wins in Norman. I am not optimistic. But if the defense generates a couple of timely turnovers then look out. They aren’t undefeatable in their own house but it’s not good to be the visiting team. Baylor, R Griffin is the most talented running QB in the league. He’s better than J. Johnson at aTm but not by much, he has half the supporting cast. Especially in his O linemen. The Raider faithful including your struly is going to rock the Cotton Bowl @ the state fair. I think Tuberville only has to be basic to crush the Bears throw short, run a lot of screens. Run up the middle. They don’t have the run stuffer defensive studs J. Lake or J. Pawelek .It’s going to show by the end of the third period. I suspect the Jeep puts a spy on Griffin all game. Just a hunch. Lobos are hungry for a win but again this game could get out of hand quick. What Tubs really needs is coming out party for the defense to set the tone for the horns the next week.

OU will be in top shape this season. I suspect these guys moving up in the polls quickly. I dislike like playing in Norman as much as the next guy but it will be interesting to see how Tuberville game plans for that one. I have OU in the NCG versus Alabama.

Bront is a badass..
All I know is that Bront Bird just became my favorite Red Raider for 2010 after the interview in those sweet glasses. I remember reading about him not wanting to pay for “stylish” glasses so he opted for the cheapest pair possible. I had not seen them until now, and it’s quite a treat. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, watch the KAMC linebackers video or click on my icon (i made a screenshot of it). You will not regret it.
And I’m pretty sure that Wiz of Odds will go back and change their poster with this picture featured front and center instead of Tuberville.
Looks like my Uncle.
