Red Raider Gridiron | Taylor Potts Named Texas Tech Quarterback

Potts Named Starter:  The official site made it official, QB Taylor Potts beat out QB Steven Sheffield for the starting quarterback position (big hat-tip to jeffinhouston for the FanPost).  Here's the official site with head coach Tommy Tuberville's comment:

"We have a very talented group of quarterbacks and are excited about every one of them," said Texas Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville. "The competition during camp between Taylor (Potts) and Steven (Sheffield) has been outstanding but at the end of the day we can only have one starter. Taylor has done a tremendous job and we feel like he has gotten better each and every day. There is no doubt that Steven has also improved during camp and will still be fighting to take over that starting job every day at practice. That kind of competition will only make us stronger as the season goes along."

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I think that QB Steven Sheffield was the better quarterback last year, but I think  no matter who was named as the starter, both Potts and Sheffield were going to play this year. Neither quarterback is perfect and both have their faults and I'm beginning to wonder if the coaching staff saw the same thing that we see and/or saw.  So many DTN members mention that Sheffield really sparked the team coming off the bench against  New Mexico and Michigan St., which is true.  And this weekend, OC Brown mentioned that he's watched every practice and every game last year.  Is it possible that the staff sees a similar situation to what we saw at the end of the year last year, which is that Sheffield will most likely give the team a spark it didn't have if the offense is in a funk?

I don't know what else to add other than to encourage you to feel free to add your own two cents about the decision, whether it be here or in jeffinhouston's FanPost.  LAJ's Don Williams and ESPN Dallas' Jeff Caplan write about the decision.  DMN's Mike Graham also wonders if picking Potts means an end to Texas Tech's offense.  Really?  How about if Texas Tech fires Neal Brown three games into a season?  I think this would be a better indicator that Tubs might want to change the Texas Tech offense.  Second, I wonder if Graham wrote the same article last year when Leach chose Potts this time last year?  Frustrating.

I will say this, I don't think that Tuberville could have handled this any better.  He treated them about as fairly as possible, at least in the public.  Taking both of them to the Big 12 Media Days and when either Sheffield or Potts talked to the media, they both talked to the media.  The only indication that we had that Potts had a step-up in Sheffield was from Sheffield's own comments.  In fact, if you read yesterday's RRG where it sounded like Tuberville (or someone) sounded-off-mic that Sheffield wouldn't be creating any headlines with his sound-bites.  From a personal standpoint, I'm really glad this is over and we can just get back to thinking about things other than quarterback.

Taylor Potts Rev. 1 is better

I know people who saw both QBs everyday and they said that Potts just outplayed Stix. He was more consistent and made better decisions. I like Stix but honestly I want the best players at every position on the field. I could care less about the QBs, wearing white helmets or running the ball 75% of the time. I am a long suffering Tech Alum that really only cares about Winning and not about the details.

Sticks

I know i read somewhere about sticks talking about transferring for the guy that didn’t win the job. Does anyone think he might transfer? I could see Sticks transferring but not Potts.

I hate when qb's do that.....

Can’t see it happening for one year of eligibility.

Seriously doubt it

If Sheffield or Potts did in fact transfer they would both lose out. I doubt either one of them has stock that high in the grand scheme of things. Also, it’s more likely that both these players will see starting time this season and why throw that away. To transfer now would be almost an impossible feat with having to learn new systems etc…

The comment was in the context of what would you say to the guy who did not get picked.

the response was focused on being ready in the event something happened as did technically 3 times last season.

Then he said if the guy could not be positive, that if he was negative, he should consider transfering.

Back up the Brinks truck

If brown and Ctt have transformed Potts to where he can make our opponents pay for their blitzing and make it not look like we are an intramural team. Not in (Allen iverson) practice….but in a game.
We can surely tout having an upgraded staff if this occurs, because his performance got worse as the season went on last year under mike.

2 quotes stuck out to me
Is it possible that the staff sees a similar situation to what we saw at the end of the year last year, which is that Sheffield will most likely give the team a spark it didn’t have if the offense is in a funk?

I think having Sticks in our back pocket for those times when we get into a “funk” is going to be very valuable. It’s like sending in a pinch hitter to get that base hit to get a rally going. We need that guy that can execute when the rest of the team is struggling, IMO.

and this one….

I’m really glad this is over and we can just get back to thinking about things other than quarterback.

Let’s start talking about the competition we have going on apparently at the RB position! ; )

Mental games?

This may be some conspiracy theory sounding stuff, but it ran through my head and I haven’t seen it posted…so here goes. When closely matched, Potts wins the starting job because of 1). Durability issues with Sticks and 2). Sheffield plays better with a chip on his shoulder. Not to say Potts isn’t a good QB (as he apparently showed in practice), but maybe the coaches have also figured out what motivates the QB’s as well.

They may actually think that Sticks is the better QB but want to save him for later in the year so why risk him getting hurt again during the first game of the season. Also, they noticed that being the ‘benched’ QB serves to motivate and focus Sticks.

I may be over-analyzing things a bit and Potts may have seriously changed and developed into a really great QB that will surprise us all. Either that or the moon landing was faked. Either way, I will always root for Texas Tech regardless of the QB. Come on Sept. 5th!!!

Media

I’m just so sick of hearing reporters downplay this offense. If we were UT with this offense these guys would be writing about how Tuberville will take it to the next level but instead we always get the negative reaction.
I think Taylor Potts is great for Texas Tech and I really am pulling for this guy to set the record straight this season. He came into Tech with high marks and offers from schools like ND and Michigan if I remember correctly. Last season he took the reins from the best QB in Tech history so we all had very high expectations. I’m a firm believer that 2nd year QBs find their game and I’m feeling like that’s what these coaches saw in practices and scrimmages. This is a season with less locker room drama and I think that will only help Potts. I respect Tuberville for making this decision early enough for this team to adjust and not waiting a week before kickoff.

Nice job Raider1992

Excellent post. I fully expect Potts to have a strong senior year. Good set of receivers, excellent depth at rb, adjusted offense (shouldn’t be libraries of film on our guys this year). I’m going to use the “r” word. More frequent running game should reduce the amount of hits to our QB.

by Tn Raider on Aug 23, 2010 1:48 PM CDT up reply actions

My concern.....

I was definitely on the Potts bandwagon at first last year……however, from the first game it was evident to all that would be objective that Potts is very good for 2 to 3 series and then he tends to go into a funk which is then passed on to the entire offense…..I’m not sure why this happens but it does and that is why Sticks brings such a spark…..I hope/pray that with the new Mad Scientist JR. this will be ended as Potts will only have 3 plays to choose from, his reads will seem to be more restrictive, and TTU will run the ball more(which helps Potts). Anyway, as much as I love the Cap’t and the Air Raid(have to say it still or walk the plank!) all I really want as a longtime Red Raider is to WIN! Time to sweep the teasips, the boomers, the atm, and of course the copycats!!!! Wreck’Em Tech

I trust this staff to make the best decision

and to manage the games well. Based on last year, I’d pick Styx. As other have said we have a similar offense but it is different and one that may just fit Taylor that much better.

We saw an increase in passion when Styx was in the games last year, but it is a year later and Taylor may have caught up in that regard.

My passion is fully behind the Raiders and, by extension Taylor as well.

Wrong worries

I think we need to quit worrying about the QB position. Either can produce, they’ve both proven that., and we have awesome depth if any problems arise. The thing we need to worry about is the DB situation. We’ve got one trying to come back from a broken leg (LaRon), one that just went down for the season(Flannel), one that left the program a few weeks ago (Yashua). Do we have any upperclassmen in the secondary? All of this while they’re trying to master a new type of aggressive defense that could easily give up HUGE plays if they are not ready.

If we can’t contain other offenses, then our own offense won’t matter at all.

by pcrawttu on Aug 23, 2010 9:54 AM CDT reply actions

To throw an unfounded dynamic, the DMN this morning said something to the effect that there is a chance the reason the Potts won the job is so Tuberville can better use the run game. Not sure why Potts being named starter would advance that theory…seems like either guy is decent enough at the basic hand off : )

We’ll know in about 13 days what the heck this team is all about, won’t we.

by Tech92 on Aug 23, 2010 10:08 AM CDT reply actions

Right on about the handoffs. Plus, i’m pretty sure stix is known to be a better runner, which i would think would be better if you wanted to run the ball a lot. but that is beside the point.

by pcrawttu on Aug 23, 2010 10:16 AM CDT up reply actions

The cynical answer would be....

Due to Pott’s limitations from a mobility perspective….you either run a quick passing play (screens, jailbreaks) or running plays. Sticks can actaully handle plays that take a while to develop…you can actaully fault him for taking too much time. I would for sure call more running plays with Potts as my QB. perhaps a bit more than the promised 5-8 per game.

OH YEAH, how about another really cyncial answer…
Because every online and brick and mortar store has dozen’s of # 15 jerseys that have been sitting there since October of last year. This is where I iether say I’m just saying or keepin it real.

Just to add another layer to this growing conspiracy theory

Potts is wearing #12 this year.

I think we all know the true answer but we keep dancing around it. This is all Bush’s fault.

Wrong Worries X2

I with pcrawttu. I am most concerend about our defense, and the DB’s particularly. Our Offense has always (almost) been stellar. All of our past QB’s have put up gawdy #’s. We have a stable of quality offensive players thanks to the Capt. I don;t really expect a lot of differences in our offensive production other than running a little more.

We don’t have a lot of proven depth at the skill positions (Corners and Safeties). They are putting a lot of stock on Byrd, what happens if he gets hurt? Our opponents are still gonna air it out. Who’s gonna cover those recievers?

by Birddog97 on Aug 23, 2010 10:24 AM CDT reply actions

Secondary

It may be our weakest part of the game but I still feel like our advantage is the depth we have there. I wouldn’t plan on the corner position being anything but 2-3 players rotating in and out. I think the youth at that position will force these guys to want to make plays and earn the spot. At the saftey position I feel like we are in good hands. Linebackers are going to add more pressure than we’re used to seeing so I expect that will aid the secondary to some degree. I can easily see a rotation of fresh legs on this squad. I expect Tre’ Porter being the difference maker by mid season.

As a fan of a team that will be playing Tech this year

I am glad your coaches picked Potts. Seems to me that Sheffield is a winner, and Potts is not. Still think that SMU will cover the spread and probably beat you, but y’all will likely take down tu. Hope I am right as that is likely how I will bet.

by miketag on Aug 23, 2010 11:18 AM CDT reply actions

Not so much Mike

SMU won’t even be a close game in Lubbock. Tech wins this one big and I agree that we will beat UT on Sept. 18th.

Honest question

What was Dykes record vs A&M?

by miketag on Aug 23, 2010 8:33 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Quick Hypothetical...

I’m just interested to hear what people have to say to a few questions…

1. If Potts were coming back and Sheffield had graduated (and wasn’t even in the picture right now), what would people be saying right now?

2. Would there be any question that he is the starter or would Doege and/or Karam be pushing him right now for the starting job?

3. Would we be looking at the situation totally differently and be more likely to convince ourselves that he can indeed fix his problems from last year? (put another way…is Sheffield and people’s emotions clouding the ability to give Potts the benefit of the doubt?)

by pcrawttu on Aug 23, 2010 2:32 PM CDT reply actions

1. Doege please.

2. I guess Karam might have a shot. What about Scotty Young.

3. Again my biggest problem with Potts is decisions after the snap and energy/tempo. Things that as far as I know can’t be taught. Of course a lightbulb could come on that would be fine with me!

by logan5555 on Aug 23, 2010 2:59 PM CDT up reply actions

#3

Yes, my emotions are clouding my judgement…..Winning makes me happy.

The better hypothetical would be if Sticks had to reshirt this year due to his foot. If that were the case, I would want Potts to start….but you had better have Doege and Karam et al ready to go if we see similar results to last year. I would then hope Doege and Karam kicked ass so that we wouldn’t have to depend 100% on Sticks health the next year.

1) Start Karam
2) Karam looked fine in the spring game. Potts looked anything but all last season
3) College careers are short. One year is plenty of time for a starter to begin to show improvement. During that first year. If there was inmprovement last year, I missed it.

by mbrown603 on Aug 23, 2010 4:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Karam looked fine...

but have you seen Potts run the new offense yet?

I don’t see how you can discredit him until you see him run the offense. He obviously showed the coaches he was better than Karam.

Better get on board folks

I am on record as saying “if Stick ’s starts in September the Raiders will be 9 and 0 heading into Norman.”
Well that’s not going to happen. So let’s all get ready for some football. I am very ready to see how the Potts version 2 gets going versus the Pony Experss. Never agreed with anyone who risks it all to play at this level getting booed. They can’t get any more homerish than myself. So I ’ll cheer the man wearing the beard. But wouldn’t it be interesting if they put Sticks into start the 2nd period for as series and the same to start the 4th period. I know it’s unorthodox and maybe even counterproductive. Sure would a wild way to give a defensive coordinator an apoplexy. So just thinking out loud here.

I think Tech will still score a ton of points. But I am getting a tad nervous about our secondary. In this conference you need a good one to stay in the game. I need someone to tell me they will be fine and do indeed know how to backpedal without falling down. :)
