Red Raider Gridiron | DTN's Schedule; Potts and Sheffield Will Play

DTN Weekly Schedule:  As the game week looms, here's my tentative schedule for each week, starting with the game-day:

Saturday:  Open Game Day Thread and Quick Reactions (this will be a post-game open thread, but with a handful of  reactions from the game);
Sunday:  Post Game Thoughts;
Monday:  Five Questions (this will deal with the game on Saturday and the upcoming game);
Tuesday:  Quick Preview (this will be a quick preview of the upcoming game);
Wednesday:  Keys to the Game;
Thursday:  Reasons for Concern and Reasons for Optimism (this is a scaled down version of five reasons Texas Tech will win/lose);
Friday:  Prediction Time

I should also mention that with my wife and I adopting, I've decided to cut back quite a bit on traveling to games, with the basic thought that if Texas Tech is on television, I'll stay at home and watch the game.  Of course, this flies in the face of my wife, who made this comment to me last week (keep in mind that we didn't take any sort of vacation this year):  "Aren't you going to go away for a weekend sometime soon?"  I think she's ready for some "non-Seth C" time.  When I'm able to get to a game, I'll try to give everyone a heads-up so that we can meet, drank, etc.

Also, you can find DTN on the Associated Press team page for Texas Tech.  Good times.

Practice Report:  The official site previews the defensive line and also had some video featuring DE/OLB coach Robert Prunty and DL coach Sam McElroy.  There was also video after yesterday's practice.  Here's my "not a transcript" notes:

Defensive Line Preview:
Robert Prunty (DE/OLB Coach):  Aundrey Barr has improved, great pass-rusher.  Scott Smith is going to contribute.  Kerry Hyder is expected to step up as well.  Jackson Richards is solid, he can only get better.  Joe Walker did a great job on their legs during the summer.  More patient in containing the run.  Expect to be able to rush the passer.  Need to play the run better.

Sam McElroy (DL Coach):  Colby Whitlock is expected to anchor the front four.  Donald Langley and Lawrence Rumph will be in 3-technique (this means that they will be playing between the guard and tackle).  Myles Wade is behind Whitlock.  Pearlie Graves has been banged up recently, not many reps.  Bobby Agoucha, David Neal and Chris Perry round out the group.

Practice 15 Press Conference
Tommy Tuberville:  Good scrimmage on Saturday.  First day working against SMU.  Time to shift gears to play someone else.  Still trying to find a two-deep and find special teams guys.  Effort was good.  Work on kicking game later in the day.  Ran the ball well on Saturday.  Two-back runs looked good.  Concentrated on play-action.  Will hopefully look like a more complete game.  Missed Okafor with concussion, admitted to the hospital.  LG Lonnie Edwards has a slight ankle tweak, but would play if there was a game.  Picked a quarterback.  That doesn't mean that QB Steven Sheffield won't play.  Both have strengths and weaknesses.  There will be a plan to play both.  QB Taylor Potts separated himself, Sheffield makes plays in and out of the pocket.  Look at completion percentage to the right spot and right checks.  Few turnover difference.  Very hard decision, Sheffield worked as hard as anyone.  Have to have patience with the quarterback.  Have full confidence in both of them.  Want the players to know that Potts is the guy, not a short-string.  There are certain situations that Sheffield may be better at.  Both of them are different.  Starting experience didn't play into the decision.  Talked to both of them about leadership and they both have it.  Potts had a better grasp for what they wanted to do.  Competition is still there.

No Short-String, But Both Will Play:  This sounds an awful similar to what I wrote yesterday, which is that I think both have their faults and both will play, but per the Tuberville press conference detailed above, he said yesterday that there will be situations where Sheffield will play.  You can find quotes from LAJ's Don Williams and DMN's Mike Graham, while LAJ's Adam Zuvanich writes that Red Raider fans should give Potts a chance.  Here's Tuberville:

"Both of them have their different strengths and weaknesses," Tuberville said after the Red Raiders’ Monday practice.  "Coach (Neal) Brown and I just felt like going into this first game, Taylor would be the guy that would be able to give us an opportunity to get better in what we wanted to do. There’ll be a plan to play both as the season goes on."

Perhaps the best quote from Don Williams' article is from RB Baron Batch, who said that Potts may be a bit looser this year:

Senior running back Baron Batch said Potts seemed to be more relaxed and having more fun this year. Batch said he respected how the senior from Abilene persevered, particularly when he left the field in one game last season to home-crowd chants of "No more Potts."

"He went through a lot last year — things that a lot of players don’t have to go through," Batch said. "He was booed off the field. No one (in the crowd) wanted to see him in there, and he never complained one time. I think just going through all that made him that much of a better player and a better quarterback."

I'll be honest, I don't remember Potts ever being anything but a team player last year.  I don't remember him pouting at any time when he was replaced by Sheffield and to hear from Batch that despite Potts' very tough season last year, he never complained to the team, I think bodes well for this team.  Again, I still think that Sheffield is the better quarterback, but I'm along for the ride.

So much stuff after the jump, including injury updates, OC Brown's daily Twitter update, more on The Ride, Kirk Bohls and Craig James rank the Red Raiders and recruiting stuff.

Star-divide

Notes, Notes and More Notes:  LAJ's Don Williams has a notebook from yesterday and has an extensive run-down of the injuries:

Offensive lineman Mickey Okafor will be out several days with a concussion. Tuberville said Okafor was hospitalized overnight after he got hurt in Saturday’s scrimmage.

Cornerbacks Will Ford and Tre Porter both "practiced some" on Monday, Tuberville said. Both have been battling injuries for more than a week.

Split end Lyle Leong (concussion), running back Harrison Jeffers (concussion) and outside linebacker Tahrick Peak (stinger) are working out in blue jerseys, meaning they are off-limits for contact.

Split end E.J. Celestie also is back on the field in a blue jersey. Celestie is coming off shoulder surgery that kept him from joining the team at the beginning of camp.

OC Brown's Daily Twitter Update:

Main focus right now is getting everybody healthy. Cutting back some to get their legs back also.less than a minute ago via Twitter for iPhone

More on "The Ride":  LAJ's Adam Zuvanich has quite a bit more on Texas Tech's new reality show, The Ride:

Hougland said he and football coach Tommy Tuberville liked the idea, but realized they could produce a much broader show themselves at a much lower cost. Hougland said the athletic department will spend $75,000 to produce the show, with all that money coming from the teams’ recruiting budgets.

Snip.

Because Tech’s athletic programs are funding the show, its coaches will have creative control of the content. Hougland said Tuberville has mapped out storylines for each football-related show with producer and cameraman Kirk Heard, who since 2000 had produced Tech’s weekly coaches shows.

Interesting.  And here's producer Kirk Heard on what to expect:

"If people are interested in learning about the program, they’ll be riveted," Heard said. "If people want to see people voted off an island, they need to watch a different show."

I'm really interested to see how much this show will appeal to those who aren't Red Raider fans and how well Texas Tech will be able to develop characters in the show.  Being goofy and joking is fine, but making people care about the characters (I know they're real people) isn't easy.

Polls and Previews:  ESPN's David Ubben breaks down the AP top 25 poll and probably to everyone's surprise, AAS's Kirk Bohls was one of the few writers to rank Texas Tech, as was LAJ's Adam Zuvanich, who happens to be a graduate of UT and your favorite color analyst, Craig James . . . CBSSports' Dennis Dodd previews the Big 12 and thinks that Texas Tech finishes 3rd in the South . . .

Recruiting Stuff:  Rivals.com's Mike Farrell has a preview of Hargrave Military Academy and Hargrave's new head coach has this to say about 2011 commit OLB Terrell Hartsfield:

"Terrell Hartsfield  for Texas Tech should be a star. All these linebackers can flat out run. He really has been a big surprise. He came into camp in shape and put on weight. He's a humble kid that loves the game and can play. I think everybody at Texas Tech is going to be impressed with him.

. . . MaxPreps' Stephen Spiewak looks at the Big 12 recruiting and thinks that Texas Tech has the 4th best class in the Big 12:

4. Texas Tech
Number of verbal commitments:
17
Top incoming recruit: Michael Brewer
Sleeper recruit: Bradley Marquez
Play right away: Kenny Williams
Comment: Despite losing previously-committed Javares McRoy to Florida, Texas Tech still has the makings for a nice recruiting haul. Williams is the team's top incoming running back. Given the depth of talent at the position in Texas this year, Marquez often gets overlooked, especially after missing time last season due to injury.

Congrats on the adoption

I hope everything goes well.

And I remember Potts being upset with getting pulled in the Alamo Bowl. However, it wasn’t that he wasn’t being a team player. To the contrary, he was frustrated because he wanted to help the team.

How many Biletnikoffs does he have? NOT TWO!

I love hearing the discussion on defense. And I’m pretty sure I haven’t heard that the run game went well and that we are taking snaps under center in 10 years! Ha.

I’m sure you are aware of this but the game is on Sunday vs. SMU.

And a #4 recruiting class sounds pretty good to me.

Concussion = Physical practice

The one item that jumped out at me today was the number of concussions from various players. Goes without saying I hope all are okay and take time to heal properly.
But this is a pretty good indication that the practices have been really physical. Injuries aside, I think this is a good indication the coaches are getting our guys ready to play!

Also, anyone else notice a shift in approach by coach TT? Might not be dramtic difference, but I do remember them saying they would not rotate QB’s. Not suggesting he will trade series or anything, but it does sound to me like both will start at various points in the season…

So,,,

is the team suffering an inordinate number of injuries, or are we just unaccustomed to hearing about them?

by ForestFlyer on Aug 24, 2010 9:07 AM CDT reply actions

there might be more, i have no idea. but also the combination of now knowing about them and actually being physical in practice will make it seem like a whole lot more than we’re used to.

by pcrawttu on Aug 24, 2010 9:11 AM CDT up reply actions

yes it is difficult to tell

the phyisical part may or may not be real…it is almost an assumption that the current numbers of injuries are a reflection of physical play. It is like the chicken and egg when I think of it in terms of knowing nothing about injuries in the past.

The coaches have talked about playing the run game more physical…shouldn’t that hurt the defensive players more than the O-guys?

The concussions have been on offense…the d is hitting them hard if that is the correlation…I guess they could be simply falling down.

Potts Clearly Pissed at Alamo Bowl

If you watch the replay of the Alamo Bowl, Potts is clearly pissed when replaced in the 4th qtr after coming out with a slight hand injury. I would call it pouting, but he was definitely not happy and tried to make the case that his injury was not serious enough to pull him from the game.

by JohnGoTech on Aug 24, 2010 9:53 AM CDT reply actions

Pouting because he felt like he shouldn't have been pulled?

What if you had a big assignment at work and got pulled from it for some reason? Would you not be pissed too?

Glad to hear Batch's comments

But I’m going to be nervous about Potts until we see him in a game (for the record I will be supporting him 100%). I keep reminding myself that Leach, Tuberville and Brown know a lot more about choosing a QB than I do…

Also glad to hear Tuberville back track on his earlier statements about not switching QBs during the season. When you have two talented guys it makes sense to play both.

Man, September 5th cannot get here soon enough!

"for the record"....HA!

Mmm….I’m suspicious.

Are you now or have you ever been a member of the “Sicks” Sheffield fan club?

Let me remind you, Red Raider Nation never sleeps….we’ll be watching you.

So busted

If loving Sticks is wrong I don’t want to be right! But I swore that I would support whomever the coaching staff chose, so I’m trying to be a good loyal Red Raider. Not always easy…and in fact impossible in some cases (A.James, bell tower boys).

In fact I have a dilemma I need help with – a friend of mine (a Longhorn) works with one of Hance’s staff. He has invited she and I to the Chancellor’s suite at the TTU v. UT game. I think I have to decline on principle (and because they probably have my name on some kind of list at the door) but she really wants to go because it’s good for her job. What to do? I should mention we’re going to the game regardless as we already have tickets.

Dilemma my ass

I certainly understand the challenge with your moral compass and I’m sure I would struggle with the decision if I were in your shoes.
But I gotta say, this is a no brainer to me. First, they likely have some strong beverage choices in the suite. Second, it’s not often you get an invite to that suite for THAT game. Third, you never know who you might get to meet during the game. Fourth, you can open up DTN for questions to pose to Hance. Finally, and most important, did I mention the assortment of adult beverage choices I would have to believe they will have?

No brainer! You gotta go. If all else fails, just get drunk and get escorted out of the suite. That would make for a great story!

I drank my lifetime quota of alcohol when I was at Tech – back in the good ole days when we had to make runs to the strip, played quarters at J. Pats instead of going to class and went to Fat Dawgs on Friday afternoons for $3 pitchers of beer. Also, drunk isn’t too pretty on women…except maybe to drunk guys! ;-)

Good point about who I might be able to meet. I’m just afraid I wouldn’t be able to hold my tongue…the industry I work in can be small and I have a shoe habit to support. Sometimes it really sucks to be a grown up… :-)

and Coldwater Country, and the Rox, and Chelsea’s Street Pub in the mall, and Fat Dawgs, and Stubbs BBQ when live blues bands were playing, and that disco on east Broadway that had steam coming out of the floor, bubbles from the sky & a lighted dance floor that eventually burned down. Plus Copper Caboose, the Brittany for Wednesday dollar pitchers, Main Street Saloon, the place on 4th and Q on top of the Mexican Restaurant that became Greek Circle East for a few years there. Plus the bar at Harrigans & the dance club on the 4th floor of the building at Slide & the Loop in the Albertsons parking lot. Plus dozens more that I can’t for the life of me remember right now. All the drinking back then didn’t help that long term memory I’m sure.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it.

Agree to the invitation. A few days before the game you’ll be receiving a package, open it. At first glance the object inside will appear to be a perfectly normal vuvuzela. Don’t blow it. You’ll go mad. I’m serious. I can’t be any more firm on this point. Instead, look through it. That’s right, it’s a camera.

Now, on game day go with your friend to Hance’s suite. Work the room. Socialize. If served, maybe eat some of those mini sausages impaled on toothpicks. Those little dudes are tasty. I like the jalapeno flavored ones. Hey, if you don’t mind, wrap up a few in a napkin for me. That’d be sweeeeeet! Thanks.

Right. Now, subtly inspect the people in the room. If our information is correct, you should detect the presence of subject code-named “C. James”. I agree, it’s a really crappy code name. Idiots. Don’t look at me like that, it wasn’t my idea. Guy in home office tells me. I tell you.

Ok, keep an eye on “James” and Hance, and a firm grip on the vuvuzela. Stay on your toes, and be prepared to capture any interesting action on film. Anything incriminating. Like kissing or something. How cool would that be? We could give the image to Seth and then he’d be more famous than Chip Brown!

Oh, and don’t forget to wear red.

by ForestFlyer on Aug 24, 2010 12:21 PM CDT up reply actions

I like it

I would love to hand Seth a scoop like this. Especially if it included kissing. I think we’ve all suspected something like this from the beginning. Seth would then be able to block people from following him on twitter like others have apparently done to him just for speaking out on the Chip Brown “coverage”.

I would however like to wear an ear piece too – like the secret service. Can that be arranged?

I worked on Capitol Hill in DC for eleven years. I can work a room. I could probably even suck up to our subject code name C. James if I took some pharmaceuticals, but I would probably still throw up in the back of my throat a little.

We will need a name for this operation…

by Austin, Tx on Aug 24, 2010 12:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Welcome to the team Agent Austin..

Yes, we can provide you with an ear piece. Though, I’m afraid the technology won’t be cutting edge. We stole the design from Cuba, so the earpiece is constructed from ’58 Ford Edsel parts. I hope you have big ears. I mean REALLY big.

I’ll relay the name of the operation to you as soon as I’ve been informed by the home office. If I was you, I wouldn’t expect a cool sexy name. I mean, they’re the ones that came up with code name “C. James”. Code? Really? Jessica Simpson could break that one.

By the way, you don’t think anyone is reading this do you? Nah….probably not.

My nickname in school was Miss Potato Head. I knew my dumbo ears would come in handy some day. Or, just in case I’m kidding, we can just make the ear pieces look like really cool earrings and they will be none the wiser.

I got a hardy round of saying The High Plains Drifter was only using coach speak about Sticks playing yesterday…but I guess we will see…but I take him at his word cause he said it several times….Sticks could play in certain situations, certain defenses, and certain teams…..so for me I do think THPD is walking back about one and only one starter…..he is hedging his bets and again IMO he didn’t 100% pick a starter for the entire season…..I will behind whoever is the QB cause I’m more than anything else a 100% Red Raider and I want to WIN…..Wreck’Em Tech

Not against SMU…maybe against Texas, but I just don’t see us having a lot of issues moving the ball or scoring against the Ponies. Our D will probably have a few issues stopping them for some of the game, but that doesn’t reflect on Potts.

Well,

Potts struggled against UNM at home last year. WE play them on the road this year, before Texas. Also, SMU should be a lot better than UNM. So either one of the two games.

You or I could probably QB this team to beat the ponies. That game won’t be a test for Tech. I expect NM on the road to be a tougher challenge. Tech will run and throw all over SMU.

But I am going to nibble at the edges here. Anyone fluent in Tubby talk want to translate the last sentence below? It is enlightening to know that both of them are different.

There are certain situations that Sheffield may be better at. Both of them are different. Starting experience didn’t play into the decision.

Cuncussed

I just think we are forgetting that once one has ONE cuncussion, it’s ever so easy to gain a second, third, et seq. I think Tubs knows and has lived this and he wants to give SS a reason to keep working hard knowing his work will not be wasted time. Couple TP’s statue-esque pocket presence with the ongoing non-2008 line play and I’d bet a crisp new C-note Pott’s doesn’t make it through the year, I’d gladly lose that bet, well worth the $100.

I agree. I don’t think either one of these guys if named the starter would finish the season injury free. Pott’s concussion may reinvent and Sheffield’s foot may do the same. I think these coaches want to keep both these guys very close to the game and ready at all times.

So what's the strategy then?

Start Potts in the less important games and save Sticks for the big games?

by Austin, Tx on Aug 24, 2010 11:52 AM CDT up reply actions

The split time evenly plan as in Dallas Cowboys Eddie LeBaron and Don Meredith in the1962 season

 Essentially it works like this – the Centex scheme.. Start Potts then on the first offensive possession in the 2nd period send in Sticks. Allow him to engineer a drive maybe two. Then have Potts close out the half. Start Potts in the 3rd period. A key series in any game and though Leach talked about getting control of games right here, I think this is even more a Coach Tuberville imperative. After a Raider score in the third period – that’s the trigger for twisting the knife by making the QB change. No score in the third then put Stick’s back in for 4th Period first offensive series. As stated earlier it’s probably a recipe for inconsistency and chaos. But might give the opposing defensive coordinators a lot of headaches in their game planning. I know no one is asking for opinions from the stands.
