Red Raider Gridiron | New 2010 Commit? Look at the Running Backs
Technical Problems: Yesterday morning, all SB Nation sites were having some issues, namely the "z" function to scroll through comments that is oh-so-sweet (this is reason enough to join DTN). The SB Nation product team has a Twitter page if you're ever curious if the network is having some issues. Also, don't forget DTN's Texas Tech list where you can follow some good Tweeters.
Practice Report: The official site has head coach Tommy Tuberville talk about yesterday's practice, a look at the running backs, complete with some video of RB coach Chad Scott. Let's get to the non-transcript:
Chad Scott (RB Coach): A lot of versatility. Have guys that have speed and power. Eric Stephens has stood out the most, can do a lot of things. Has practiced every practice (only one of two players to do this). Aaron Crawford was injured, but he'll do a little bit (both TB and H-back). Ben McRoy is a small, but fast kid and they want to find places to get him the ball. Lot of situations where Batch and Stephens are both on the field together and lined up in different places.
Tommy Tuberville: Have turned the corner, more scout team work. Start to put in the game-plan for the first game. Every coach puts in a game-plan differently. By the time they get to Sunday, start to treat it like a game-week. Eric Stephens, Ben McRoy and Detron Lewis are the top three returners. Want McRoy to learn the offense, not just be a specialty player. McRoy is fearless. To fans that don't like the Potts decision "Get over it." WR Alexander Torres just stretched his back a bit, he'll be fine. Like trick plays, don't like to run them just to do so, but make a team stay at home. Thinks his team could be susceptible to trick plays because he wants all 11 running to the ball. When you have skill players, you want to use them, and they're fun.
There was some player, a backup middle linebacker, who Tuberville said that they were still pretty clueless. I couldn't hear the name, any help out there?
Notes, Notes and More Notes: LAJ's Don Williams has a notebook and Tuberville also talked about the defensive line:
"That’s one area we were concerned with in the spring," Tuberville said, "and then you get (Donald) Langley back out here and Chris Perry and (Lawrence) Rumph and you get Scott Smith on the team. You go from just trying to hang on to having an opportunity to be one of our better positions once they learn what they’re doing."
. . . and Tuberville has some advice for fans not happy with the decision of Potts over Sheffield (KAMC also has some video of Tubs):
"Get over it," Tuberville said. "We’ve got two good quarterbacks and a guy that had a very good spring. I don’t mind playing any of them. We’ve just got to get some consistency."
McRoy to Play: As noted above, Tuberville said that he expects that RB Ben McRoy to play this year, possibly at returner. LAJ's Don Williams writes about this true freshman from Florida and McRoy has this to say:
"I was real excited, but I know I’ve got to keep it up," he said. "I can’t just hear that news and then start dropping in effort. I’ve got to keep improving and learning. … I’m sure if I start going downhill, they’ll change their mind."
McRoy also chases jackrabbits, with help from WR Shawn Corker filiming:
So much after the jump, including a possible 2010 receiver commitment and Batch continues his walk through his senior season.
New 2010 Commit? Got an email this morning and then had to piece together the rest, but I think Texas Tech may have secured a commitment from Blinn College WR Darrin Moore. RRS.com has a story about a new commit, but obviously it's behind a paywall and I don't subscribe. Then I did my morning search and ran across a Scout article, again, behind a paywall, where the headline states that Moore committed to Texas Tech. I've refined the search a bit and am linking it here (hopefully you'll see the Scout link). The next part was pretty easy. Moore committed to Ole Miss in August (which is really late to commit), per the Clarion Ledger's David Brandt, who wrote on August 2nd that Moore had committed to the Rebels:
Ole Miss picked up some late help at receiver by signing junior college transfer Darrin Moore, according to both Rivals.com and Scout.com. Moore is 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds and signed with UTEP out of high school, where he redshirted in his only season before transferring to Blinn (Texas) CC, where he played with Auburn quarterback signee Cameron Newton last year.
Moore is 6-4/220, runs a 4.60 40-yard dash and here's the links to his Rivals, Scout and ESPN profiles. Moore caught 37 passes for 559 yards and 3 touchdowns last year for Blinn College. And because I love you all so much, here's some video of Moore (make sure and turn down the volume):
Batch's Update: Batch is also writing for the LAJ (same article can be found at MyWestTexas) chronicling his senior year. Go read the whole thing.
Miscellaneous: FWST's Dwain Price writes that Tuberville will offer more offensive balance and defensive emphasis . . . FSSW Keith Whitmire writes about the Potts vs. Sheffield decision . . . DMN's Chuck Carlton did a chat and had a number of Texas Tech questions. . .

I'm happy to say I've begun to get my morning rituatal in order!
Good stuff Seth!
And just an observation from today’s RRG and the last few days (QB stuff aside) I get the feeling that Tubbs, players, everyone… though still working hard… are having fun and it all just has a positive vibe to it. I’m looking forward to this year!!!!!

watch out for PETA
I used to take my dogs out and let them run in that field (and chase the rabbits) across from Covenant, but the PETA people put an end to that.
Hold on..
You mean they think that animals doing what comes natural to them is bad now too? World would be a much better place without PETA
Jack Rabbit Chase
That’s funny!!!
"Well I’m glad you picked us last, we put that on the bulletin board and maybe we can circle around that" - Neal Brown, Offensive Coordinator
If only
If only he had caught the rabbit, I would have emailed that to everyone on my contact list… haha.
I remember seeing a bit on one of the first E:60's...
about rabbit chasing in Florida. Apparently it’s a huge thing out there among HS receivers.

Great video....you should have fun like this in college
Get over it……can’t wait to see the product on the field and be proved wrong.

Read the Baron's article
I hope you all read Batch’s weekly article. It is always uplifting and encouraging. He made the following comment. “I have never felt such a buzz of excitement in Lubbock about any of the past four seasons than I have for this one. I just want to thank everyone for all of the support. I know the players and coaches appreciate it tremendously.” Considering that he was part of the “magic” ‘08 team, this is quite a statement. Combine this with Whitlock’s statement in the FWST (“I feel like this is the most well-rounded, talented team that we’ve had since I’ve been here in my three years We’ve got great players all over the field, and not just one or two here and there.”) and it sounds like something special is brewing in Lubbock.
Mustaches!
Every football player knows that a dirt squirrel is the key to success on gameday.
"I like to think of myself as a one man wolfpack."
HCTT was not being mean in his re-marks. He was just stating that Hubert has a lot to learn as the MLB position has to be able to recognize offensive schemes and be able to call out defensive adjustments and help position players. That is a lot for a true freshmen to learn.
"I thought happiness was Lubbock, Texas in my rearview mirror" Mac Davis
That is almost a give for a HS freshman.
If he redshirts so that he can learn to play Div1 football it will be a normal thing to do…not all of them are exceptional their first months on campus.

Get over it??
We shall see Tubs, we shall see….
And the more we hear reports from the coaches on how things are shaping up the more we start to believe Leach when he says that this years team is the best he would have had over his career at Tech.
Get over it
was the right thing to say in my opinion. It was a strong, decisive, “I’m in charge – back off” kind of statement. Tubs needed to shut down the QB talk, not encourage the waffling. At the same time, like logan5555, I’m of the we shall see school of thought. Is it September 5th yet?
That is the way I am looking at it.
I think he is basically saying the decsion is made and it is time to do the next steps of preparing for the season.
He answered questions about it for a couple of days, I am looking for him to stop doing that and focus more on the here and now.
women should put pictures of missing husbands on beer cans
Make me....
Now, I don’t even have a problem with the quarterback selection. Potts is fine with me if coach feels like he can get the job done. I just damned sure don’t like anyone telling me to “get over” anything. I’ll make my own decisions and thoughts, thank you very much. A better thing to say might have been, “We made the best decision we could and that’s that.” Sorry, I just get my shorts all wadded up by crap like that. Maybe I have problems with authority :).
Tubs seems to prefer sheep following his program
Lucky for him there are a lot of sheep who follow this program, so it’s a perfect marriage. When his pronouncements border on the bullying, I’ll just let them roll off my back. At least while he is still undefeated as the Texas Tech football coach.
@silver...well said.

That rabbit has some burst...
5-star recruit according to Rivals, Scout. Great top-end speed. Change direction unmatched, shifty. Runs with low center of gravity and tough to find behind bigger O-line. Huge upside…Lots of offers…We’re pushing but might be tough to sign in the Spring.

"To each person, I could be a different person. So you need to decide." R.A.
Downside..
Questions about off-field behavior. Fathered several out-of-wedlock litters, has a penchant for skipping down trails in the WRONG neighborhoods, several reports from lettuce farmers about impulse control issues, and rumors suggest a prime candidate for a 12-step deworming program.
Just needs some guidance
We have good leaders on the team that can help guide down the right path. Worth the risk, IMO.

durability questions
I think the bigger question is if he can take a hit. He looks kinda fragile, altho you’ve GOTTA love that cutting ability. You get a good fullback to lay a hit to spring him from the backfield and I don’t think anyone is gonna touch him in the secondary.
Damn, guys, this is one of the funniest reads i've seen on here
reason #10,289,384 why i LOVE double t nation
If we can get him to run downfield rather than chasing after the ladies all the time we may have a heisman trophy winner on our hands. I found this picture that demonstrates his leaping ability. Tons of big play potential!

Red Raider Rivalry
I waiting for the first reporter to ask Mack Brown about the Red River Rivalry game and for him to say he isn’t looking past the Red Raider Rivalry game in Lubbock this year. It will be tough for them to come in top ranked with a rookie QB (albeit I think he will be pretty good after watching the Bama game last year) in front of the fans here in Lubbock and win. I hope we can be consistently good this year. Go Tech
Great from The High Plains Drifter.....
I guess that is the attitude I want when THPD/Mad Scientest JR. made their decision on the QB. Say The Player Formerly Named Nick is the man and go with it….don’t confuse us with this “well Sticks might play against certain teams, circumstances….” Go with who you choose and then if TPFNN gets hurt then change……Anyway, I just want to WIN! Wreck’Em Tech
I think some of you are getting Jack Rabbit confused with Darrin Moore
DM’s the one that might need counseling from the Chaplin. It looks like he got the boot from Mike Price at UTEP in 2009 for violating team rules.
The only thing worse than that
is having Rick Pitino kick a player off the team for not tipping his waitress.

Harrison Jeffers
What’s the situation with Harrison Jeffers and why has someone that was so productive last year kind of been lost in the shuffle. All the buzz is about Stephens and McRoy. I have always loved the depth Crawford and Jeffers give us. What’s the deal?
Harrison Jeffers
was my guy…but I agree. He has fallen off the radar and I dont like what Im hearing from him (via fb) and his teammates (batch). If this keeps up I will be OFF the Jeffers bandwagon

But it also may have something to do with why he remained in Leach’s doghouse for most of 2009. Perhaps Tubs and Co are seeing the same behavioral issues.

"turn down the volume"
Well….I guess the players that set their highlight videos to polka tunes just don’t get recruited as heavily.
Shame…really.
I realize it is different
But could you imagine going to a job interview and playing a video that some of this background music??? It doesn’t bother me and sometimes it blends well with the action on the field. But more often it’s simply a distraction.
My guess, the coaches probably automatically mute their volume every time they watch a highlight video.

Tuberville was on 105.3 the Fan here in DFW
This morning about 10:30 on my way back to the office. He was really downplaying THIS year and talking long term. He was really a buzzkill for my 2010 hopes. Hope he was just coachspeaking. Newy asked him about what the goal was for this year and he just said to get better every week, no depth on defense etc…
BTW don’t razz me for listening to the Fan, Norm was on a commercial break. Plus the Fan does carry the Rangers (and Cowboys) games so they ARE good for something.
Give 'Em Hell Tech!!!!!
I wouldn't expect him to be cheerleading at this point
No reason for Tubs to be telling the medial how great he expects the team to be. However, I would not confuse what he is saying in public with what is going on behind closed doors. The team is quietly confident and definitely has a swagger. They have UT in their sights as their target game and have strong expectations of a very good season.
by jeffinhouston on Aug 25, 2010 11:12 AM CDT up reply actions
That very well may be the case.
He would not be the first HC to poor mouth what turns out to be a very good team/season. Those type of words may be motivation for his players…they kind of fly in the face of what we just read from Batch and Whitlock (who may be simply expressing a senior’s enthusiasm and pre-season positive outlook…although I cannot help think there is some basis for their comments)
women should put pictures of missing husbands on beer cans
At odds with recent comments about d-line
Weren’t we just hearing about all of the talent on the D-line? Pretty sure I read something about how that group could end up being one of the strengths of our defense.
Sounds an awful lot like what Spike used to do every year. Used to drive me crazy how he would downplay our team. But it also reminds me of Lou Holtz parody that Dan Patrick used to do about how good William & Mary was and that ND couldn’t beat those guys…LOL
What I’m reading and hearing (from players) is this group is confident and talented so I chalk this up to coachspeak…

He’ll say the exact opposite soon enough. I don’t care. I just want him to win 10 games this year.

Agreed.
I’m quite tired of listening to Tuberville speak out of both sides of his mouth. I want to see how he performs on the sidelines. He has to at least duplicate the Captain’s success this first year, and surpass it in subsequent years.

The more things change...
Let’s see, we’re in a new era of Tech football, and here’s what we know:
1. Taylor Potts is the starter
2. Jeffers might be in the coach’s doghouse
3. The HC says we just want to take it one week at a time, not worried about championships
4. Craig James takes his vacations at Rip Griffin’s
Not sure I can handle all these changes.

I like the words about the DL, at last some positives.
“That’s one area we were concerned with in the spring,” Tuberville said, “and then you get (Donald) Langley back out here and Chris Perry and (Lawrence) Rumph and you get Scott Smith on the team. You go from just trying to hang on to having an opportunity to be one of our better positions once they learn what they’re doing.”
I like the words about having an opportunity to be one of our better positions…two more weeks of practice to get ready for the first game…a couple of practice games…and then a strong challenge…we look to be in a much better spot that we were thinking last Spring.
Add to that what Whitlock said…part of those words are about his DL peers.
I saw the jack rabbit run a couple of weeks ago, it is pretty funny from where I sit. Amazingly, McRoy stayed with it for longer than I thought he could.
I looked at the references and remain thoroughly confused about the new commit…I did not read anything about TTU. He is a big kid, the video was played at a slower than normal highlight video so everything and everyone looks slower. What I saw was a big North/South reliable receiver who will make a play to catch a football, but not necessarily make a great in-traffic play after.
I wonder the thoughts from Ben McRoy’s brother as he watches his brother’s success at TTU….I hope Ben has a dazzleing season !!
women should put pictures of missing husbands on beer cans
the only concern about the new commit is what appears to be some baggage. He played in utep’s spring game in 09 after being suspended from the team for a week. he apparently looked very promising leading the team in receiving that game and was expected to push for a starting job as a RS freshman. Utep coach Mike Price was saying he has great potential as long as he “keeps his nose clean.”
http://www.ktsm.com/sports/wr-darrin-moore-working-his-way-utep-lineup
Apparently he didn’t keep his nose clean because a couple weeks later he was kicked off the team for unspecified team rule breaking.
Then in the Ole Miss article, he talked about making a huge mistake in el paso but moving on to juco getting his associates degree from Blinn faster than anyone expected.
Now he’s suddenly not going to Ole Miss and pops up at Tech ten days before our first game. Just a very odd series of events. Let’s just hope he has truly learned from his mistakes and has gotten his head screwed on a little tighter.
Apparently....
TTU has 5 or 6 scholarships available because that many of 2010 class didn’t qualify. I hope the db and the wr can get here and at least begin the process….I have said it before and still believe this..ou and the teasips can be had this year and The High Plains Drifter has a real chance to totally win over the fans by WINNING!!!!! So I do think 9 wins is doable and 10 can be had! Wreck’Em Tech
I read today that Hursey has signed and is on campus...
I expect the big wr to be also, soon, very soon.
He does have a concerning history…this staff seems to have a penchant for finding guys who want to make a change. They seem to be keen to extend the proverbial ‘second chance’ opportunity to guys who look like they are ready. It kind of fits whom they seem to be.

Can someone provide a refresher on VJ Fehoko
Correct me if i’m wrong, but I thought VJ was a lock for the 2010 recruiting class but the new coaching staff pulled his offer. If this is the case, that looks like a really bad move right now as we scramble to fill up the 2010 class. From what I’ve read VJ is progressing well at Utah.
