Schedule Smart

We also need rivalries that fill stadium seats and living room couches to be a good choice for conferences and TV stations. I say start scheduling Arkansas every year, OKSU in Dallas as part of a double-header with OU/UT, and Houston in a dome in Houston every other year. Play SMU only in Lubbock. Beat UT half the time, A&M more than half, Houston and SMU all the time. Fill the stadium, no matter what the ticket prices are. No empty seats. Be exciting to watch! Get the best AD available at any cost. Make some noise!

Scheduling

I agree that Tech needs to upgrade their non-conference schedule, dropping any team not in the BCS, if possible, except for those few that may actually be a positive on the schedule. Of course, that would be a stretch normally, but a team playing as well as Boise St or TCU could actually help some years. But, scheduling a Washington, Oregon, Cal, Ole Miss, Fla St or Michigan type teams for home-and-home series would be big, as long as Tech wins the bigger portion. It would be good to drum up a rivalry game against a perennially good team, no matter which conference they are in. I would personally like for a couple of teams to fill that mold, like an Ole Miss, Washington, LSU or the like. This would be a good thing to plan because of the uncertainty that we face with the Big-12 and college football in general.

TTpilk Psalm 117:
1 ΒΆ O praise the LORD, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people.
2 For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the LORD endureth for ever. Praise ye the LORD.

Completely agree...

I was listening to Sports Animal here in OKC this morning. They were talking about the strength of non-Conference games of OU, Texas, Florida, et al. They mentioned Xerox U only in that their non-Conference is weak. They spoke about Mizzou, Nebraska, A&M, etc. Tech was never mentioned. This is our biggest problem in not being seen as a legitimate threat to win the conference. I hope our new AD (whoever they may be) can help us out here.

I Liked the Arkansas Idea

But we screwed up and let the Aggies get an annual game in Dallas. I say lets play LSU in Dallas every year (great risk but also can reap great rewards) and keep all the conference game home and home. An Alabama game there would also be good but Gerald screwed that one up too.

Things to consider

Teams like LSU will not give up a home game they always sell out 95,000 at $85+ per ticket. Washington might be good but we have no passion for playing them. We need to remember that one purpose for playing is building rivalries and also playing where we get recruiting exposure. We play in a dome in Texas bc Cougar stadium is too small and we want TV exposure there and a packed house so we can recruit. Would be nice to have a “trophy” game like so many interstate rivalry games. Something to motivate and fight for. Challenge A&M to an “Cross-Tex Crush” game and make a trophy to give. Challenge OSU to a “Cimmaron River Rivalry” at the state fair with a trophy to give and play just before OU/UT. Fans get to see a double-header, will be a sellout! Steal UT’s recruiting exposure advantages and stranglehold on the spotlight! IF we sell out and get big games in big TV market areas we WILL get included in good conference realignments.

The only reason we play SMU at all is to have a Dallas game for the metroplex alumni & recruits

So it’s the Dallas game that is more important to the program than the Lubbock SMU game. Beginning next year we start a complete Big 12 -1, 12-2 round robin schedule so we will only have 2 the 1st year and then 3 non conference oppurtunities a year after that.

They should make

the Dallas (Fort Worth) game TCU. I still don’t understand why they were dropped off of this years schedule?

by rednader on Aug 31, 2010 11:33 AM CDT up reply actions

That was ESPN moving the UT game to the week we were going to play TCU

TCU couldn’t reschedule late in the season so the game was dropped.

TCU

Maybe playing TCU in Jerryworld every year could be a good thing. I would rather play a non conference game there every year than in-conference game. Conference games tend to give us our best crowds at home. Because really, how many of us want to travel 5 to 6 hours for Weber St, North Dakota State, etc. But a lot of us will for Baylor, Iowa State, etc. Also, a annual game with Cougar High (UH) alternating between Reliant and Jerryworld would not be a bad thing either.

TCU might not ever get invited back to Jerry World after this weekend.

I heard there’s only been 40k tickets sold (total) to that Oregon State game there.

Talk about no fan support.

The DFW Metroplex is allergic to college football

When SMU had the Pony Express & were a top 5 team Texas Stadium was only half full most games. You go to Tyler & everywhere you go people are wearing UT hats & shirts. In Dallas it’s all Dallas Cowboys all the time. On sports talk radio, on the local TV sportscasts, in the newspaper. I don’t understand it.

by mbrown603 on Aug 31, 2010 4:30 PM CDT up reply actions

True...

but I still figured they could sell 40k tickets to TCU fans alone. I’m pretty sure we alone had about 68k or so fans in that place against Baylor.

May not get invited because of that

and the @$$ whooping I have a feeling they will receive against oregon st. this weekend

The only think important about OOC Schedule

is to going into Big12 play undefeated.

I think

When the Big 12-2 is in effect the OOC Schedule will be more important.

by cweber7377 on Sep 1, 2010 9:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes, it may be MORE important....

What is most important is the BCS ranking of the conference going into bowl selection time and the committee’s likes and dislikes. It is all on a whim when it gets there…Auburn is a prime example of that in their recent undefeated season.

The conference ranking will depend more on what the voters think of Oklahoma and the University of Texas…this is where losing the aura that accompanied Nebraska will impact.

The route to the MNC for the Big12 has been the Big12 play off game and the percieved value of the winner…TTU was almost in the cat bird season a couple of times recently and the OOC schedule would not have made a whit of difference for a voter who knew that he had to vote TTU the number one team based on wins vs OU and UT.
