Double-T Nation Daily Diatribe | Practice Schedule is Released

Crabtree's Progress: Found this Yahoo! Sports article by Michael Silver on WR Michael Crabtree and his quarterback, Alex Smith, had the same thing to say about Crabtree that his former college coach was saying for years:
"He picks things up fast," Smith said. "Some guys just kind of have the football feel. He’s a very instinctive, natural receiver. He has great hands and body control, and he sort of naturally comes back to the ball, which makes the quarterback look good."

I think what this means is that you're going to have to check in on DTN over the weekend and if we can get a DTN correspondent in Lubbock, all practices are open to the public, we would be forever grateful.
More on D. Washington: Dave Campbell's Texas Football's Travis Stewart has a bit more on newest Texas Tech commit, ATH DeAndre Washington:
Washington to Texas Tech
Speaking of excellent classes, Texas Tech's is no slouch, either. If there's one thing Tommy Tuberville has proven he can do in his short tenure as head coach, it's recruit. The next in line is FB Marshall's DeAndre Washington, a highly-sought after athlete-type that we think will eventually stick at running back. His numbers last year were average — less than 700 rushing yards (but with a 7.63 YPC average) — but his real appeal is in his great leadership, work ethic and classroom presence. The kid is just an all-around A+, so the coaches won't have to worry about him down the road. If Tech is really going to try and get the run game up to about a 40 percent usage in the offense, recruiting kids to inherit the RB mantle down the road is critical. Washington is a great fit for that mold.
This is really good stuff and good to hear that he's a good kid and good in the classroom.
So much stuff, including the new football team chaplain speaks, DTN loves Baron Batch, news on commits OL LeRaven Clark and LB Derek David, the men's basketball schedule is released and more on the new assistant baseball coach. OMG!
The New Chaplain: LAJ's Don Williams was at the Lubbock FCA event last night and this was the first time that I've heard Texas Tech's new chaplain Steve Grant talk about his vision. For the most part, Grant talked about how he wants players involved:
Steve Grant wants to see Texas Tech football players serving visible roles in the community. It matters not to the Red Raiders’ new chaplain whether they visit nursing homes, read in schools or volunteer at children’s hospitals.
"Any worthy cause, I want these athletes to be there,’’ Grant said. "It is a privilege to play football here at Texas Tech, and with that privilege comes the responsibility to give back to the community that supports this program.’’
I'm sure we all have our thoughts on how you might feel about a chaplain with the team, I'd just ask that you keep things civil. The one quote that did surprise me was from my guy, RB Baron Batch, who had this to say about the job that head coach Tommy Tuberville has done at Texas Tech (emphasis mine):
Speaking from the podium to Tuberville, Batch said, "For you to invest in the players the way you have, for you to invest in the community of Lubbock the way you have, you already have made such an impact. Whether you know it or not, whether you can see it or not, it’s big."
I'll let you digest that.
More on Batch: RP.com's Travis Cram sat down with RB Baron Batch, who gets that playing football in college is an opportunity to make something better with your life:
"If you use football just to gain minor things that don’t mean anything in the long run and you don’t take advantage of the opportunities that you have while you’re doing it, then you become useless. I’ve seen it happen a hundred times. Guys live it up, live up this lifestyle as a college football player and they don’t realize that it’s a tool to get you to something bigger and to start off another career once football is over." Batch gets "it" and he's made it clear on his own blog: Football is something I have a passion for and its something that has given me tons of opportunities, not necessarily just for me but to really help people that I would have never imagined I could help. Its taken me places that I never dreamed I would go. It has introduced me to people I never would have thought I would meet. If you asked me what football is to me this would be my answer "football is a tool, football is a vehicle to something bigger, simply a mode of transportation, football is my platform.....for now."
I'll stop the Baron Batch love-fest for the rest of the day.
Officially Transferring: There was a mention some time ago about Rutgers TE Tony Trahan transferring to Texas Tech and this is the first time that I've seen an official announcement. Trahan is from Coppell and is looking to move closer to home, he only caught two passes last year and he's a project. We had a good discussion about Trahan when the news first broke.
Tweeting About Derek David LeRaven Clark: 24/7's Jeff Howe was watching a Rockdale H.S. practice yesterday and he had some interesting things to say about some Texas Tech commits, 2012 commit LB Derek David and 2011 commit OL LeRaven Clark (there's another David brother, James, only a sophomore, who is apparently making an early impression):
Rockdale 2012 LB Derek David is now 6-4, 220. Physically he's more advanced that current #UT commit Steve Edmond.
David said he's committed to Texas Tech, but Alabama, Ohio State and Texas are all going to recruit him. His brother Logan also a TT verbal.
Rockdale 2011 OT Le'Raven Clark has an extremely high ceiling as a LT. 6-6, 250 ran a 4.8 in the spring. A LONG way from physically peaking.
Clark is solidly committed to Tech. Said Missouri and Nebraska were two schools he liked a lot before adding to an outstanding class for TT.
Will Texas Tech Change: I'm running out of time this morning, but I found this FSSW article asking if Texas Tech will change. It's stuff that most DTN'ers know, but it's something to read this morning.

Schedule Released: The official site has the men's basketball schedule. It's footbaw season, I can't muster the energy to dissect this at this time.
Ham Makes Us Stronger: Ridiculous Upside's Scott Schroeder has the goods on an awesome t-shirt to commemorate former Red Raider Darvin Ham being named the head coach of the New Mexico Thunderbirds:

Win!

More on Horner: I posted a FanShot on Monday morning, and Texas Tech made it official yesterday as Jim Horner was named as assistant baseball coach. Horner comes from the Seattle Marinerss High Desert Mavericks minor league club. LAJ's George Watson got some really good quotes yesterda as I was curious if Horner would be replacing anyone on the staff and Horner is replacing Ed Gustafson, who was apparently replaced by head coach Dan Spencer during the middle of the year last year. There's a lot of things to appreciate about Spencer, but he's brutally honest and Spencer explained what happened last year:
"It was a miserable situation for Eddie and me, the whole deal," said Spencer, who added Gustafson was paid throughout the summer while he sought another job. "I guess I’m not a guy who can have a pitching coach with me because I have my own agenda with them, right or wrong. That’s the way it played out. Eddie and I are close as far as doing things in a lot of ways, but when push came to shove, it was a move we needed to make."
Horner will be in charge of hitters at Texas Tech and Spencer will be the head coach and pitching coach.

Do you think Tech will keep Knight if he doesn’t make the tournament this year? What if he makes the tournament but loses in the first round? Seems like this has to be his last shot at doing anything relevant for a while with all the seniors leaving…
FWST Does such a great job covering Tech football
I wonder if you can get the Star-Telegram delivered if you live in Dallas? I’d be tempted to switch from the Dallas Morning News, who haven’t heard that there are other college programs in the state outside of Austin and Highland Park.
I don’t think going to church and serving the community should be pushed on the kids. If they want to do it on their own that’s fine.
I agree with the church part...
But pushing community service on these kids is a bit different, and probably should be encourage. But the Chaplain has a great pedigree for this by picking up on his time with Tony Dungy.
I did catch any language in Seth's report that led me to believe anything was pushed on the players.
Saying that simply offering the services of a chaplain is “pushing”, is like saying that Luby’s is pushing the fish on me just because it’s on the menu. All the while I know damn well I am going to get the chicken fried chicken. I’m hungry.

true...
the chaplain makes it sound like these football players can never be good people and succeed in life without going to church… i don’t go and i’m kick ass.. do think there’s nothin wrong w/ the community service part though. They can view it as NFL prep seeing as they would have to be the united way’s bitch their whole career
I attend church regularly and when I was at Tech I saw fraternities that required their members to attend. Like anything else, it had a positive effect on some and others were not interested. I respect that the chaplain would like to see all the football players attend church on Sunday morning. It shows that he believes what he is preaching. I would be more concerned if he was impartial about whether or not anyone else joined him. His heart seems to be in the right place and I believe he will have a positive effect on the team both mentally and spiritually.

So I am considering accepting a new position, with another firm...
If I chose to accept, I will be taking vacation through the month of August starting the the 9th. That means I should be able to troll around the practice fields on a regular basis again. Stay tuned.

Sinners need chaplains too
Whether a kid wishes express his religion or not within the confines of football matters not.
I think it is great to encourage community service.
Most of these kids, in fact most people in general, come from pretty narrow walks of life.
These volunteer experiences will help them see the world a lot differently.
Plus its always good to have a counselor around.

"This time it's different."
Derek David: I hope this kid stays on board as I know AL and UT will do anything to convince him to go with them. I think the unity among this class(2011) is building and I hope the Tuberville keeps that going. David is a 2012 class recruit so landing a good number of guys this early will help. Keep them coming!
Chaplain: Great way for these kids to have someone to talk to why they can’t be at home. Acts of service in the community should be expected by any role models and these players are local celebrities to kids around the hub city. I doubt this has anything to do with religious affiliation but more so giving back.
Batch: One heck of an individual who gets it at an early age. This kid has a great future for so many reasons.

The Value of a Chaplain
Tubs sees a void in many of his players lives. Many of them did not grow up with fathers who taught them through word and deed how to be a good man. As much as mom’s are awesome this is one thing they can’t do.
With his responsibilities, and the assistant coaches with theirs, it is difficult for them to invest the energy necessary to truly be there for their players … enter the chaplain.
The chaplain will fill that role as a wise counselor helping these young men refine their character, being a sounding board for decisions, and giving them feedback on the decisions that they have made.
Throwing these young men into an extraordinarily demanding situation, Tubs has said that playing major college football and going to school is like two full time jobs, without proper character will lead many of these kids to fail.
This translates to the field. If a young man is lazy and has gotten by on his talent alone, he will take plays off. If a young man has not been held accountable for his actions during his life, most likely he will be a selfish player who shirks responsibility and sacrifice … maybe even his classroom work. If he has not been shown how and encouraged to push through adversity, he will quit when the going gets tough. Position coaches will make their points one way, but a good chaplain is able to reinforce those points on a much deeper level.
All of these things effect the team and their goals. Tubs wants to minimize that and help these young men to grow their character so that they will have success where ever they go after football. (Channeling Baron Batch here.)
A chaplain combined with the deep, everlasting truth found in an ancient text is the most effective and time-tested method to refine a person’s character and to teach him how to have success where ever they go.

1 ¶ O praise the LORD, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people.
2 For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the LORD endureth for ever. Praise ye the LORD.
Your error
is thinking that only a religious man beating the bible into their heads is the only possible person that could fill that “void”… you suggest, much like the chaplain in his quotes suggested, that the only way these lost souls can possibly be saved and have a successful life after college is if they attend church regularly and believe in what the chaplain is preaching… i think these kids are grown men who can make decisions for themselves at this point, and if they can get counseling and guidance from secular sources, then what would be the problem in that? I get the point of a chaplain and i get that some of the kids need/want it available, but i’m pretty sure not everyone needs/wants it and they should not be shunned for having a different viewpoint
I am afraid that you have misunderstood. I am against Bible beating as much as you are … that ends up doing more harm, often lifetime harm, than good. I counsel people on a regular basis who have lasting scars from being beaten the Bible. When it comes to going to church or a chapel service, most people will self-select … meaning they will be there if they want to be there. I am not in favor of compulsory attendance for any religious service.
A chaplain is not the only person who can fill the void. Professors, uncles, friends, etc. can also help a young man and the secular world has many helpful ways that teach people how to succeed. Yet as I have read a lot of secular stuff, the most effective of the secular stuff, is rooted in a deep truth found in the Bible.
Many of these young men are like Michael Oher. If you have seen the movie “The Blind Side”, I think that you will agree that someone like Michael did not have the skills, confidence or the decision making ability to seek counsel or to be successful after football. Yet, when a family decided to love and guide him, Michael bloomed. (BTW – I understand that they are a strong Christian family who lives out their faith) A chaplain can have the same effect on a young man.
To many cultures, success has more of holistic meaning, than Americans have. If married, success is to have lasting and passionate marriage; it is living live well; honoring your commitments; having a rock solid reputation for the things that you have done at work and in the community; teaching your children the way they ought to go by loving them and demonstrating to them the right things to do; and by consistently making wise and timely decisions; etc.
Out of the hundreds of books that I have read regarding all of these things, there is one that stands out and teaches every single way that you can have lasting success and joy. I bet that you know which one that is :)
One last thing, my aim is not to egg anyone on here or be contentious regarding this issue, but to provide reasoning to why it is a great idea to have someone on staff who loves these young men, who pours his life into their’s, and can guide them along the way by using the timeless truth.

you’ve proven my point…
“Yet as I have read a lot of secular stuff, the most effective of the secular stuff, is rooted in a deep truth found in the Bible.”
…by suggesting this you are saying that we get all of our modern day morals and sense of right/wrong from a book compiled 2,000 years ago when humans have been around for 200,000… there was no understanding of right/wrong before then? we do not get our morality from this book, it’s human nature… my whole point is that these kids can lead perfectly happy healthy successful lives without the help of a chaplain or any other religious influence in their life, but everything you’ve said and the team chaplain has said suggests otherwise
I understand where you are coming from, hopefully you understand where I am coming from, so we will agree to disagee

fair enough...
if nothing else thank you for giving me a reason to zone out at work… 3 and a half more hours and counting…
OK, so take out what the words "rooted in a deep truth"
Much of our society has stepped away from the morals, whether they be rooted in the Bible or human nature. Look at the thefts, drug use, murders ect over the years. Alot of people do whatever they need to do to help themselves with no regard for others or the law. I’m not going to sit here and say that you must be a Christian to be a productive member of society, but I do feel that alot if not all of the things one must learn and do are taught in the Bible. I don’t see this Chaplain beating kids over the head with a bible, or forcing them to attend church… that would probably be considered unconstituional anyhow. I think he will base his teachings simply on being moral more or less, and being there for a spiritual counselor for those who want it.
awesome i was afraid i was goint to have to start working again...
so no christian people have ever stole, taken drugs, or murdered anyone? These things are only caused by people who have not read the bible to understand it’s teachings? just because it’s mentioned in the bible to not steal or kill, don’t you think people understood it probably wasn’t a great idea to do that before it was written down? it’s also written in the bible that it’s ok to own slaves and we should stone homosexuals but i think we can both agree that is something we should not do… where did that change in what is morally right come from? Either way I think you closed your statement well and i too hope that he does not attempt to make them attend church and only offers his advice when it is asked of him… if that is what he does, absolutely great hire
Eh....
I could get into it and talk about what you just said about stoning and slavery, but that would involve more Bible talk than I’m sure you intend to read. I will say that I don’t think either is condoned, but thats another story. I didn’t say that just because it’s in there and people read it they don’t do it, merely stated that it’s there. I do think that people who truly believe and read their Bibles are less likely to do these things, but there is never a guarantee.
Just gotta add a couple of points to bats post
First, isn’t it obvious that the Raider program was sooooo depraved and out of line (especially under Leach, but also Spike, Sloan, Moore, Carlin, King, et al) that the only way to reach the high ground is with John Fitzgerald Katfish and traveling tent show?
Secondly, you said, "it’s also written in the bible that it’s ok to own slaves and we should stone homosexuals but i think we can both agree that is something we should not do… " to which I said, I would have to be stoned to even think about being gay.
"There's going to be ups and downs but you have to enjoy the battle." Mike Leach
this is very true also...
under leach we had the highest graduation rate in the big 12 but unfortunately we lacked a chaplain, so clearly those players are all doomed to a life of welfare and crime
Hey lighten up ... there are good people out there who don't believe in the Bible
Situation is conjecture I know but what if someone like a chaplain was able to reach out to McKinner Dixon in a way that resonated with McKinner and where able to help McKinner get on track by using the Bible. He might turn out like Baron Batch who has confessed that if one of the Christians on the team did not reach out to him at a pivotal moment in his life, his life might have gone another direction.
by Arizona Raider on Aug 4, 2010 3:15 PM CDT up reply actions
i was just joking...
but if that was the situation and religion turned dixon around for the better, fabulous… i’m just suggesting that not everyone needs that to be a great person or turn their life around… i don’t care what anyone believes, if they are happy and not hurting anyone else then they are alright by me… as a side note, welcome back!
If he is turly a "Chaplain"
He will not push anything on anyone. He will listen, listen, and listen some more; then and only then will he direct.
He may advise how his faith helps him but will understand that everyone must seek faith in different ways.
Church has a broad meaning, to some people it can only be a huge congregation meeting under three stories of roofed in air.
Others can find church serving regularly in a food line at a local homeless shelter.
My favorite chaplains portrayals, nice guys who let their service to mankind show their faith.

As for as the community service goes I agree with this.
"He had a philosophy that if you do not do community service, you can not be on his football team,’’ Grant said. "I believe it’s very important for us as a team to have our athletes have a visible presence in the community.’’
Athletes really produce nothing for a community, other than a warm fuzzy feeling in victory. The kids who work in the community to pay their way in school are producing and adding value to the community. Volunteering to serve can only produce positive results for both the athlete and the community.
FORZA ROSSI
i have
no issues with the team chaplain… i only hope that he is giving his advice and religious guidance only upon request
Id prefer this position not be called a Chaplin
Call it an advisor, mentor etc but a chaplin implies religion and Texas Tech is a state (government) run school. Although few might have the courgage to admit (especially in West Texas) they dont want to participate in any so called religions activities or ways of thought.
If he is a Chaplain call him a Chaplain
The U.S. military is government run as well, and Chaplains abound.
This is part of our culture, our heritage, and there is little reason why we need be divided about it.

Dead On TM!!
Been around the military since I was six. Been around the Chaplain’s Corp since ‘79. A Chaplain is a go to guy when you’re losing control and need direction. When you have questions you don’t feel comfortable asking your friends or family. When you’re worried about something and mom and dad are 200, 500, or a thousand miles away. There are no requirements only opportunities. and one visit does not REQUIRE followup. If you need to talk, he is there. If you don’t need to talk, he is there.
You anti-religion guys are blowing this WAY OUT OF PROPORTION!!!

Solid CTT endorsement by Batch; looks like coach realizes there is more to the program than just winning games.
The chaplain’s presence may be somewhat divisive to outsiders, but I believe it works well within the walls of the program and helps prepare these young men for more than X’s and O’s. I would also like to point out another strong upside to the chaplain program that may work to our advantage, although I admittedly I don’t know how many non-secular programs have this position (and, thus, to what extent it provides a competitive advantage). Many of the prized recruits are the children of highly protective mothers with strong spiritual beliefs. When they start evaluating where their precious child is going once he leaves the mother hen’s nest, the presence of a staff chaplain could be enough to sway the mother’s opinion in our favor. I don’t believe this is CTT’s reason for staffing this position, but I would be willing to bet that it frequently comes up during the recruiting home visits.
An addition to the Batch love-fest
The dude is such a great person and leader it’s impossible not to root for him. I’ve never met the guy but my girlfriend had a couple of classes with him last year and they became friends.
Just a little story about that:
My 13 yr old little brother might be a bigger Tech fan than I am, and Batch has been his favorite player for awhile now. Since Baron and my girlfriend were friends my brother asked her last year if she could get his autograph on a football he had. She was kind of hesitant to ask him since some football players don’t enjoy signing autographs. But she asked him if he would mind signing it since we wanted to give that to him for Christmas. He was more than happy to sign it and wanted to know all about him. Long story short, he also gave her two autographed gameday photos to give to him on top of the ball. Seriously, my little brother’s face at Christmas was priceless when we gave all that to him.
Awesome guy…I hope he succeeds at the next level. He deserves it.

So the question is, does Double T Nation qualify as “polite company”?
Practice
Was thinking about driving to Lubbock to see a practice. Anybody have any clue how long these practices go for?
The new chaplain sent an e-mail to the big guy. We're waiting on a response.
I suspect God will lean more this year towards shorter practices during the heat of August. But what do I know? I’m just a mere mortal.

Am I the only one that noticed the VISA logo on Crab’s jersey? Has the NFL gone the way of soccer and allowed advertising uniforms?

Blah,blah,blah.....this is a Tech sports board, yes?
Who cares if we have a chaplain of an Easter Bunny, is this a west Texas college or Cal Berkley? Never saw so much protesting just to protest. Call him chaplain or waterboy, in the end the staff is investing time and money into the welfare of the players, and according to top caliber guys like Batch, its not going unnoticed, or unappreciated. But then again, what do the everyday players know when compared to the unsubstantiated conjecture of bloggers 300 miles from campus?

To clarify
I think we can talk about whatever we want (within reason), but I do agree with you on the second part of you post: we’re not Cal Berkeley. It’s just a chaplain afterall. His intent is not to convert, judge or whatever. He’s just someone there to offer a kind of support that most college kids don’t have. There’s no will here whatsoever.

9/2 Marshall @ Klein Forest
I will try to take a video or two of him if weather & my technology permits. Regardless, I will give a full report on 9/3.
Gonna try to make the practice Saturday for a little while!
My boy starts 7th grade football this year and I think it be good for him to see. If anybody else is going you’ll know me by the Tech shirt and Auburn cap! See ya there!
I may try to make the scrimmage onthe 21st also! Try for pics and/or video if I can…

Crabs
It appears that the 49ers are actually realizing the talents possessed by the gem of a player they were very fortunate to draft at the 10th slot. As much as we all like our players at Tech, we may have been witness up close to perhaps the eventual top wide receiver ever. I still marvel at what he could do on the field of play. It had to be very difficult for him not to perform as he was accustomed after he was injured. He just could not get over that injury well enough to still be the absolute best. But this year he is healed completely from all previous injuries and will once again be able to showcase his talents. Name anyone you want. No one can match his unbelievable abilities as a football player. I am excited to be able to have an opportunity to witness his career in full. My only regret is that he is at San Francisco in a less-than-steller offensive setting. But somtimes ya just gotta go with who brung (or drafted) ya.

Is that the QB will actually get the ball to him the same way Harrell used to, leading him enough so he can easily do his thing.
TTpilk Psalm 117:
1 ¶ O praise the LORD, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people.
2 For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the LORD endureth for ever. Praise ye the LORD.
Batch
I did not say anything about the rest of the post, but Batch, as we all have pretty much agreed on, should be among the top backs in the conference, maybe the country. Of course, with several (at least four with Batch, Crawford, Stephens and Jeffers) backs to share the load, he might not get as many carries as some other backs, but his abilities will shine through nonetheless.
I watched the video of DeAndre Washington and he really does look like the real deal. Happy to have him aboard. As a matter of fact, all the commitments are nice. I am aware that Tech’s recruiting is overall much better. As long as it translates well onto the field we can anticipate some super years ahead for Tech football.
Lastly, I like the addition of a non-football-related person for the players to feel comfortable with in the event they have an issue that their coaches, teammates or family cannot assist them with the way they need. It makes sense and fills a void that many may need. Whatever he is called, it should be a positive influence and shows the incoming coaches care about the players’ welfare and are willing to address that void.

2 For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the LORD endureth for ever. Praise ye the LORD.
